Indicator lights
Description
The indicator lights in the instrument cluster
blink or turn on. They indicate functions or mal­
functions¢ &.
Messages may appear with some indicator lights .
A warning signal will sound at the same time.
The messages disappear again after a short time.
To display a message again, press the
I SE TI but­
ton ¢
page 11. If several malfunctions occur,
each of the indicator/warning lamps will be dis­
p layed in succession for about two seconds at a
time.
Some indicators lights in the display can turn on
in several colors.
8_ WARNING
- Failure to heed warning lights and other im­
portant vehicle information may resu lt in
serious personal injury or vehicle damage.
- Whenever sta lled or stopped for repa ir,
move the vehicle a safe distance off the
road, stop the engine, and turn on the emer­
gency flasher ¢

-The engine compartment of any motor vehi­
cle is a potentially hazardous area. Before
you check anything in the engine compart­
ment, stop the engine and let it cool down.

Opening and closing
Central locking
General description
The power locking system locks or unlocks all
doors and the rear lid simultaneously.
You can lock and unlock the vehicle centrally. You
have the following choices:
- Remote master key
c:::> page 34,
-Door handles with convenience key*
c:::> page 34,
-Lock cylinder at the dr iver's door c:::> page 36,
or
- Power loc king switch inside
c:::> page 35.
Automatic locking
The automat ic locking feature locks all the veh i­
cle doors and the rear l id when you drive faster
than 9 mph ( 15 km/h).
The car is unlocked again once the ignition key is
removed . In add ition, the vehicle can be unlocked
if the opening function in the power locking sys­
tem sw itch or at one of the door levers is actuat­
ed. The Auto Lock function can be turned on and
off in the rad io or MMI*

Additionally, in the event of a crash with a irbag
deployment the doors are automatically un­ locked to allow access to the vehicle .
Selective unlo cking
When you lock the vehicle, the power locking sys­
tem w ill lock the doors and the rear lid. When un ­
lock ing, you can set in the radio or
MMI* whether
only the drive r's door o r the ent ire vehicle should
be un locked

Anti- theft alarm w arning sy stem
If the anti-theft alarm warning system detects a
break-in into the vehicle, acoustic and v isual
warn ing s ignals are tr iggered .
The anti-theft warning system is activated auto­
mat ically when you lock the vehicle. It is deact i­
vated when unlocking using the remote key, w ith
the mechanical key, and when you switch on the
i gnit ion.
Op ening and cl osing
The alarm also turns off when the a larm cycle has
expired.
Turn signals
When you unlock the veh icle, the turn s ignals
flash twice, when you lock it once. If they do not
flash , one of the doors, the luggage compart­
ment lid or the hood is not locked or the ignition
is still switched on.
Unint entionally locking your self out
In the follow ing cases there safeguards to pre­
vent you locking your remote master key in the
vehicle:
- The vehicle does not lock w ith the power lock­
ing sw itch
c:::> page 35 if the d river's door is
open.
- On veh icles with co nvenience key*, if the most
recently used master key is in the luggage com­
par tment, the rear lid is automatically unlocked
again after it is closed .
Do not lock your veh icle w ith the remote master
key or co nvenience key* unt il all doors and the
rear lid are closed. In this way you avoid locking
yourself out accidentally .
A WARNING ,-c=-
-When you leave the vehicle, always remove
the ignition key and take it with you. This
will prevent passengers (children, for exam­
ple) from accidentally being locked in the
veh icle should they accidentally press the
power locking sw itch in the front doors .
- Do not leave children inside the vehicle un­
supervised . In an emergency it would be im­
possible to open the doors from the outs ide
without the key.
(D Tips
- In the event of a crash with airbag deploy­
ment all locked doors w ill be automatically
unlocked to give access to the veh icle occu­
pants from the outside.
- If the power locking system should mal­
function, you can lock the driver's door us­ ing the mecha nical key
c:::> page 36.

9. If the garage door or other system does not
open using the buttons in the roof headliner
even though the programming was success­
fu l, the system may use a rolling code in­
stead of a f ixed code.
Rolling code program­
ming must be performed ¢ page 43.
The other two buttons in the roof headliner can
be programmed accord ing to the instructions
above. Begin w ith the third step .
Erasing button programming
The programmed buttons cannot be erased indi­
vidua lly. They must a ll be erased together. Repro­
gram the buttons if necessary.
.. Switch the ignition on.
.. Press and hold both outer b uttons in the roof
headliner until the LED ® turns off complete ly
(after about 20 seconds).
Reprogramming the buttons

"'T o reprogram an individual button, press and
hold the button until the LED® starts to flash
quick ly (after about
10 seconds). Release the
button immediately. Programming mode is ac­
t ive for 5 minutes .

-Programming using the buttons in the roof
headliner is not possib le w ith all Infotain­
ment systems . If this is the case, program
the buttons as descr ibed in version A
¢page 41.
-The required distance between the hand
transmitter and the Homelink module in
the radiator grille¢

system that you are prog rammin g.
- Depending on the model of the system, you
may need to release the button on the re­
mote control during programming and
press it again . Hold each position you try for
at least 15 seconds before trying another
position. Keep the turn signals on your vehi­
cle in view when doing this.

Rolling code programming
Applies to vehicles: with garage door opener (Homelink)
Rolling code programming is also needed for
some systems .
Identifying a rolling code
.. Press and hold the button in the roof headliner
that was already programmed.

door) is equipped with a roll ing code.
"' Program the rolling code as follows:
Activating the motor unit in a system
.. Locate the programming button on the sys­
tem's motor un it. The exact location and color
of the button may vary depend ing on the brand
of the system .
"' Press the programming button on the garage
door opene r moto r un it (th is w ill usually acti­
vate an "i ndicator" on the motor unit). You now
have approximately
30 seconds to program the
button in the roof headliner.
Programming the button in the roof

"'Press and hold the previous ly programmed but­
ton in the roof headliner for 2 seconds .
.. To end ro lling code programming, press and
hold the button again for 2 seconds.
.. With some systems, the button may need to be
pressed a third time to end the programming
process .
After programm ing, the system should detect
the signal and begin moving when the button in
the roof headliner is pressed. Now you may pro ­
gram the ot her buttons as needed .
(D Tips
-The rolling code can be programmed more
quickly and more easily with the help of a
second person.
- If you have difficulty programming the roll­
ing code, referring to the user guide for the
system may help .

Driving
oil pressure must first build up in the hy ­
draulic va lve adjusters. This is normal and
not a cause for concern .
- If yo u leave the vehicle with the ign ition
switched on, the ignition will switch off af­
ter a certa in period o f time . P lease note that
electr ica l equipment suc h as exterior lights
will switch off as well when that happens.
Switching engine off
Applies to vehicles: w ith conven ience key

Steering lock
The steering locks when you tu rn the engine off
using the
! STA RT E NG IN E STOP I button and open
the dr iver's door . The locked stee ring helps pre ­
vent vehicle theft .
Emergency off
If necessary, the eng ine can be sw itched off with
the selector lever in the R o r D/S pos itions . T he
engine stops if you press and hold the
I S TAR T ENGIN E ST OP I button at speeds be low
6 mph ( 10 km/h) and p ress the brake pedal.
A WARNING
- Never turn off the engine be fore the veh icle
has come to a comp lete stop. The f ull func­
t ion of the b rake booster and the power
steering is not guaranteed. Yo u must use
more force to turn or bra ke if necessa ry. Be­
ca use you cannot steer and b ra ke as you
usually wou ld, this could lead to c rashes
and serious injur ies .
- For safety reasons , you should always park
yo ur vehicle wi th the selec to r l ever in P . Oth­
erwise, t he vehicle could inadve rten tly roll
away .
- T he rad iator fan ca n con tinue to run for up
to 10 m inutes eve n after yo u have tur ned
o ff the engine and removed the igni tion key .
T he r adiator fan c an also turn on ag ai n if t he

engine coolant heats up because of intense
sunlight or heat b uild- up in the eng ine com­
partme nt.
- Always take the key w ith you whenever yo u
leave your vehicle . Otherwise, the engine
could be started or electrical equipment
such as the powe r windows could be operat­
ed. This can lead to serio us i njur y.

If the engine has been under heavy load for
an extended pe riod, heat bu ilds up in the en­
gine compartment after the eng ine is switch ­
ed off -there is a risk of damaging the engine .
A llow the engi ne to run at id le for about two
m in utes before swit ching i t off.
Driver messages
Ignition is on
This message appears and a warning tone sound s
i f you open the d river's door when the ign ition is
switched on .
No key ident ified
This message appears when the
I S TAR T ENGINE ST OP I butto n is pressed if there
i s no maste r key ins ide the ve hicle or if the sys­
tem does not recogni ze it. For examp le, the mas­
ter key cannot be recogn ized if it is covered by an
object (e .g . a luminum brief case) wh ich
screens
the radio signal. Elect ro n ic dev ices such as cell
phon es can a lso inte rfe re with the radio signal.
Press brake pedal to start eng ine
This message appears if yo u do not press the
brake pedal to start the eng ine in a vehicle with
an a utomat ic transm ission.
Pre ss clutch pedal to start engine
This message appears if yo u do no t press the
cl utc h ped al to sta rt the eng ine in a ve hicle w it h
a manual transmission.
Shift to N or P to start eng ine
This message appears when attempt ing to star t
t h e engine if the selecto r lever for the automat ic
transmission is not in the P o r

Driving
-Oc ca siona l noises when the parking brake is
applied and released are normal and are not
a cause for conce rn.
- When the vehicle is parked, the parking
brake goes thro ugh a se lf-test cycle at regu­
l ar inte rvals . Any associated noises are nor­
mal.

cl e. Locked doors make it more difficult for
emergency wor kers to get into the vehicle -
putt ing lives at risk.
Starting from rest
The starting assist function ensures that the
parking brake is released automatically upon
starting .

Starting and automatically releasing the
park ing brake
.. When you sta rt to drive as usual, the parking
bra ke is automatically released and yo ur vehicle
beg ins to move.
When stop ping at a traffic signal or stopping in
c ity t raffic on vehicles with an a utomat ic t rans ­
mission, the parking brake can be app lied. The
vehicle does not have to be he ld with the foot­
brake. The pa rking brake eliminates the tendency
to c reep with a d rive ra nge engaged. As soon as
yo u drive off as usua l, the park ing b rake is re­
l eased a utomat ica lly and the vehi cle starts to
m ove .
Starting on slopes
When sta rting on inclines, the starting assist pre ­
ven ts the vehicle from unintentionally ro lling
bac k. The braking force of the parking b rake is
n ot released until suff icient dr iving force has
been built up at the wheels.

For safety reasons, the pa rking bra ke is re­
l eased a utoma tically on ly w hen t he d river's
s a fety be lt is en gaged in t he b uckle.
Starting off with a trailer
To prevent rolling back unin tentionally on an in­
cline, do the f ollowing:

roll ing ba ckw ard .
.. Yo u can re lease the swi tch @ once you are s ure
that you are deve loping enough d riving force at
the whee ls by depressing the accelerato r.
Depend ing on the weight of the rig (vehi cle an d
t ra ile r) and the seve rity of the incline, yo u may
r o ll backwards as yo u start. You can p revent roll­
i ng backwards by holding the parking brake
switch @pulled o ut and acce lerating -just as
you would when starting on a hill wi th a conven­
tiona l hand b rake .
