Sw itching the ignition on /off
If you would like to switch the ignition o n wit h­
out starting the engine, fo llow these steps:
• Inse rt the key into the ignition lock.
• Press the key brief ly
wi thout p ress ing the b rake
pedal.
• To sw itch the ignition off , press the key again.
When starting the engine, major e lectr ica l loads
are sw itched off temporar ily.
You ca n only remove the key with the ignition
sw itched off .
If the engine should not start immedia tely , the
starti ng process is automatically stopped after a
short time . Repeat sta rting procedure .
A WARNING
-Never allow the engine to run in confined
spaces - dange r of asp hyxiation.
- Never remove the ignition key from the ign i­
t ion loo k while the vehicle is moving . Other­
wise, the steering lock cou ld sudden ly en­
gage and you would not be able to steer the
vehicle.
- Always ta ke the key with yo u wheneve r you
leave your vehi cle. Otherwise, the engine
could be started or electrical eq uipment
s uch as the power windows cou ld be operat­
ed . T his can lead to ser ious injury.
- Never leave ch ildren or persons requiring as­
sistance unattended in the vehicle. The
doors can be locked using the remote trans­
mitter, preventing peop le from escap ing
from the vehicle on their own in the event of an emergency . Depending on the time of
year, people inside the vehicle can be ex­ posed to very high o r very low tempe ra­
t ur es.
([) Note
Avoid high engine rpm, full throttle and heavy
eng ine loads until the eng ine has reached op­
erati ng temperature - otherwise you risk en­
gine dam age.

Do not let the engine run while pa rked to
warm up. Begin dr iv ing immediately. Th is re­
d uces unnecessary em iss ions .
@ Tips
-If the key cannot be removed from the igni­
t ion lock, you have to pu ll the mechan ica l
key out of the master key in order to be able
to lock the vehicle

- After starting a co ld engine, there may be a
br ief per iod of increased noise because the
oil pressure must first build up in the hy­
draulic valve adjusters. This is norma l and
not a cause fo r concern .
- If you leave the veh icle with the ignition
switched on, the ig nition w ill switch off af­
ter a ce rtain period of t ime . Pleas e note tha t
ele ct rical eq uipme nt such as e xterior lights
w ill switch off a s well when that hap pens.
Starting the vehicle with the emergency
key
Applies to vehicles: with ignition lock
You can use the emergen cy key as an igni tion key
in an emergency.

adapter. Make sure that the Audi rings are fac­
ing up.
.. Press the emergency key in the adapter down
until it latches audibly.
.. Insert the adapter with the emergency key for­
ward into the ignition switch . The engine can
now be started as usual.
Stopping the engine
Applies to vehicles: with ig ni tion lock
.. Bring the vehicle to a full stop.
.. Automatic transmission: Move the selector lev­
er to the P or N position.
.. Press on the ignition key. The engine is turned
off .
.. You can now remove the key.
Steering lock
The steering locks when you remove the ignition
k ey. The locked steering helps prevent vehicle
theft.
Emergency off
If it is necessary in unusual circumstances, the
engine can be switched off while the vehicle is
moving. The engine will be switched off if you
press on the key for an extended period.
A WARNING
- Never turn off the engine before the vehicle
has come to a complete stop. The full func­
tion of the brake booster and the power
steering is not guaranteed . You must use
more force to turn or brake if necessary. Be­
cause you cannot steer and brake as you
usually would, this could lead to crashes
and serious injuries.
- For safety reasons, you should always park
your vehicle with the selector lever in P. Oth­
erwise, the vehicle could inadvertently roll
away.
- The radiator fan can continue to run for up
to 10 minutes even after you have turned
off the engine and removed the ignition key.
Driving
The radiator fan can also turn on again if the
engine coolant heats up because of intense
sunlight or heat build-up in the engine com­
partment.
- Always take the key with you whenever you
leave your vehicle. Otherwise, the engine
could be started or electrical equipment
such as the power windows could be operat­
ed. This can lead to serious injury.
- Never leave children or persons requiring as­
sistance unattended in the vehicle. The
doors can be locked using the remote trans­
mitter, preventing people from escaping
from the veh icle on their own in the event of
an emergency. Depending on the time of
year, people inside the vehicle can be ex­
posed to very high or very low tempera­

i s no master key inside the vehicle o r if the sys­
tem does not recogni ze it. For example, the mas­
ter key ca nnot be recognized if it is covered by an
object (e .g . alum inum br ie f case) which
screens
the radio signal. Electronic devices such as cell
phones can also interfere w ith the rad io signa l.
Press br ake pedal to sta rt engine
This message appears if you do not press the
b rake peda l to s tart the engine.
Shift to N or P to start engine
Dr ivi ng
This message appears when attempt ing to start
t h e engine if the se lector lever for the automatic
transmission is not in the P or N position. The en ­
gine can on ly be started w ith the selector in
these positions.
El I s the key in the vehicle?
T his mess age appears if the mas ter key is re­
moved from the vehicle wi th the e ngine runn ing .
If the master key is no longer in the ve hicle, you
cannot switch on the ignition after stopping the
engine and you also cannot start the engine
again . Moreover, you cannot lock the vehicle from
t h e outside with the key.
Shift to P otherwise vehicle can roll away . Door s

if le ve r is not in P.
This message appears for safety reasons along
with a warning signal. It appea rs if the selector
lever for the automatic transmission is not in the
P position when switch ing off the ignition. Move
the selector lever to the P position, otherwise the
vehicle is not secured against rolling away. You
also cannot lock the vehicle us ing the locking
button* on the door handle o r us ing t he remote
key .
Convenience key defe cti ve! Use ign ition lock
This message appears if the engine must be
started or stopped using the ign ition key and not
the
I STAR T ENGINE ST OP ! button.

Operation
The electromechanical parking broke replaces
the hand broke.

-Improper reliance on the side assist system
can cause collisions and serious personal in­
jury:
- Never rely only on side assist when chang­
ing lanes .
- Always check rear view mirrors to make
sure that it is safe to change lanes.
- Sid e assist cannot detect a ll vehicles under
all conditions- danger of accident!
- Please note that side assist indicates there
are approaching vehicles, or vehicles in your
blind spot, only after your vehicle has
reached a driving speed of at least 19 mph
(30 km/h).
- In certain situations, the system may not
function or its function may be limited. For
example:
- if vehicles are approaching or being left
behind very quickly. The display may not
turn on in time.
- in poor weather conditions such as heavy
rain, snow or heavy m ist .
- on very wide lanes, in tight curves or if
there is a rise in the road surface . Vehicles
in the adjacent lane may not be detected
because they are outside of the sensor
range.
(D Note
The sensors can be displaced by impacts or
damage to the bumper, wheel housing and
underbody. This can affect the system . Have
your authorized Audi dealer or authorized
Audi Service Facility check their function.

-If the window g lass in the driver's door or
front passenger's door has been tinted, the
display in the exterior mirror may be misin­
terpreted.

Adjusting the display brightness

The signal brightness can be set in the radio or
MM!*.

control button > Driver assist> Audi side as­
sist .
The display brightness adjusts automatically to
the brightness of the surroundings, both in the
information and in the warning stage . In very
dark or very bright surround ings, the display is al­
ready set to the minimum or maximum level by
the automatic adjustment . In such cases, you
may notice no change when adjusting the bright­
ness, or the change may only be noticeable once
the surroundings change.
Adjust the br ightness to a level where the display
in the information stage will not disrupt your
view forward. If you change the brightness, the
display in the exterior mirror will briefly show the
brightness level in the information stage. The
brightness of the warning stage is linked to the
brightness in the information stage and is adjust­
ed along with the information stage adjustment . ..,_

-Each passenger must always sit on a seat of
their own and properly fasten and wear the
safety belt belonging to that seat.
- Before driving, a lways adjust the front pas­
senger seat and head restraint properly.
- Always keep your feet on the floor in front
of the seat. Never rest them on the seat, in­
strument pane l, out of the window, etc . The
airbag system and safety belt will not be
able to protect you properly and can even in ­
c reas e the risk of injury in a crash.
- Never dr ive with the backrest recl ined or
t ilted far back! The farther the backrests are
t il te d back, the greater the r isk of injury due
to incorrect pos itioni ng of the safety bel t
and improper se ating posi tion.
- Children m ust always ride i n child safety

Proper seating positions for passengers in
rear seats
Rear seat passengers must sit upright with both
feet on the floor consistent with their physical
size and b e properly r estrained wh enever the ve­
hicle i s in use.
To reduce the risk of injury caused by an incorrect
seating position in the event of a sudden braking maneuver or an accident, your passengers on the
rear bench seat must always observe the follow­
ing:
"' Make sure that the seatback is securely latched
in the upright pos ition

"' Keep both feet flat in the footwell in front of
the rear seat.

Proper adjustment of head restraints
Applies to vehicles: with adjustable head restraints
Correctly adjusted head restraints are an impor ­
tant part of your vehicle's occupant restraint sys­
tem and can help to redu ce the risk of injuries in
accident si tua tions.

restra ints that a re not properly adjusted in­

- Never attempt to adjust head rest raint
wh ile driving. If you have driven off and
must adjust the dr iver head rest for any rea­
son, first stop the veh icle safely before at­

in a ch ild restraint that is appropriate fo r
their age and size

Examples of improper seating positions
The occupant restraint system con only reduce
the risk of injury if vehicle occupants ore properly
seated.
Improper seating posit ions can cause serious in­
jury o r death . Safety be lts can only work when
they are prope rly positioned on the body. Im­
p roper seating posit ions reduce the effectiveness
of safety belts and wi ll even increase the risk of
in ju ry and death by moving the safety belt to cr it­
ical areas of the body. Improper seating positions
also increase the risk of serious injury and death
when an airbag deploys a nd strikes an occupant
who is not in the proper seating position . A driver
i s responsible for the safety of all vehicle occu­
pants and especia lly for children. Therefore:
.. Never allow anyone to assume an incorrect
seat ing pos it ion when the veh icle is being used

sitions that will increase the risk of ser ious injury
and death . Our hope is that these examples w ill
make you mor e aware of seat ing pos itions that

Always make sure that the knee airbag can in-
flate w ithout interference. Objects between
yourself and the airbag can increase the risk
of injury in an accident by interfering with the
way the airbag deploys or by be ing pushed in­
to you as the ai rbag deploys .
- No persons (children) or animals shou ld ride
in the footwell in front of the passenger
seat. If the airbag deploys, th is can result in
serious or fatal injur ies.
- No objects of any kind should be ca rried in
the footwell area in front of the driver's or passenger's seat. Bu lky objects (shopping
bags, for example) can hamper or prevent
p roper deployment o f the a irbag . Small ob ­
jects can be thrown through the vehicle if

Loose items in the luggage compartment can
shift suddenly , changing vehicle handling charac­
ter istics . Loose items can also increase the risk of
serious personal injury in a sudden veh icle ma ­

partment.

the luggage compartment as low and as far for­
ward as poss ible

Improperly stored luggage or other items can
fly through the vehicle causing serious per­
sonal injury in the event of hard braking or an
accident . To help reduce the risk of serious
personal injury:
- Always put objects, for examp le, luggage or
other heavy items in the luggage compart­
ment.
-Always secure objects in the luggage com­
partment us ing the tie-down eye lets and
suitable straps .
A WARNING
Heavy loads will influence the way your vehi­
cle handles. To he lp reduce the risk of a loss
of control leading to ser ious persona l inju ry:
- Always keep in m ind when transporting
heavy objects, t hat a change in the ce nter of
gravity ca n also cause changes in vehicle
hand ling:
- Always distribute the load as even ly as
possible.
- Place heavy objects as far forward in the
luggage compartment as possible .
- Never exceed the Gross Ax le Weight Rating
o r the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating specified
on the safety compliance sticker on the left
door jamb. Exceeding permissible weight
standards can cause the vehicle to slide and hand le different ly .

A WARNING
-To help prevent poisonous exhaust gas from
being drawn into the vehicle, always keep the
rear lid closed wh ile driving .
- Never transport objects larger than those
fitting completely into the luggage area be­
cause the rear lid cannot be fully closed .
- If you absolutely must dr ive with the rear lid
open, observe the following notes to reduce
the risk of poisoning:
- Close all windows,
- Close the power top,
- Open all a ir outlets in the instrument pan-
el ,
- Switch off the air rec irculat ion,
- Set the fresh air fan to the highest speed .
A WARNING ~
Always make sure that the doo rs, all windows,
the power top and the rear lid are securely
closed and locked to reduce the risk of injury
when the vehicle is not being used.
- Afte r closing the rear lid, always make sure
that it is properly closed and locked.
- Never leave your vehicle unattended espe­ cially with the rea r lid left open. A child
could cr awl into the ve hicle through the lug­
g age compartmen t and close the re ar lid be­
coming trapped and unable to get out . Be­
ing trapped in a veh icle can lead to serious
pe rsonal injury .
- Never let c hildren play in or around the vehi­
cle.
- Never let passengers ride in the luggage
compa rtment . Vehicle occupants must al ­
ways be properly restrained in one of the ve­
h icle's seating posit ions.

- Air circu lation helps to reduce win dow fog­
ging . Stale air escapes to the outs ide
through vents i n the t rim panel. Be sure to
keep these slots free and open .

A WARNING
Not wearing safety belts or wearing them im­
properly increases the risk of serious personal
injury and death . Safety belts can work only
when used correctly .
- Always fasten your safety belts correctly be­ fore driving off and make sure al l passen­
gers are correctly restra ined.
- For maximum protection, safety belts must
always be pos itioned properly on the body .
- Never strap more than one person, includ ­
ing small ch ildren, into any belt.
- Never place a safety belt over a child sitting
on your lap .
- Always keep feet in the footwell in front of
the seat while the vehicle is being driven.
- Never let any person ride with their feet on
the instrument panel or st icking out the
window or on the seat .
- Never remove a safety belt while the vehicle
is moving . Doing so will increase your risk of
being injured or killed.
- Never wear belts twisted .
- Never wear belts over rigid or breakable ob-
jects in or on your clothing, such as eye
glasses, pens, keys, etc., as these may cause
injury .
- Never allow safety belts to become dam­
aged by being caught in door or seat hard ­
ware.
- Do not wear the shoulder part of the belt
under your arm or otherwise out of pos ition.
- Several layers of heavy clothing may inter­
fere with correct positioning of belts and re ­
duce the overall effectiveness of the system .
- Always keep belt buckles free of anything
that may prevent the buckle from latching
securely .
- Never use comfort clips or devices that cre ­
ate slack in the shoulder be lt. However, spe­
cial clips may be required for the proper use
of some child restraint systems.
- Torn or frayed safety belts can tear, and damaged belt ha rdware can break in an acc i­
dent . Inspect belts regularly. If webb ing,
bind ings, buckles, or retracto rs a re dam-

aged , have belts replaced by an author ized
Audi dealer .
- Safety belts that have been worn and loaded
in an accident must be replaced with the
correct replacement safety belt by an au­
t horized Audi dealer. Replacement may be
necessary even if damage cannot be clearly
seen. Anchorages that were loaded must al­
so be inspected.
- Never remove, modify , d isassemble, or try
to repair the safety belts yourself .
-Always keep the belts clean . Dirty belts may
not work properly and can impair the func­
tion of the inertia reel~
page 184 .

The driver and front passenger seats are equip­
ped with belt positioners.

The front sea ts are equipped with bel t position­
ers so it is easier to fasten the safety belts . The
belt positioners automatically extend when the
door closes and the ignition switches on
