A WARNING

- Never open the engine hood if you see or
hear steam, or if you see engine coolant
dr ipping from the engine compartment. You
cou ld burn yourself. Let the eng ine cool off
first so that you cannot hear o r see any
steam o r engine coo lant.
0 Note
- Mount ing additional lights or accesso ries in
fron t of the a ir inlets reduces the cooling ef­
fect of the radia to r. A t high outside temper­
atu res or high e ngine load, the eng ine could
overheat.
- The front spo iler has been designed to prop­
erly distribute the cooling air when the veh i­
cle is moving. If the spo iler is damaged, this
could reduce the cooling effect and the en­
gine could then overheat. Ask your author­ ized Audi dealer for assistance.
Tachometer (engine rev counter)
The tachometer indicates the engine RPM (revo­
lutions per minutes).
If engine RPM drops be low 1,5 00, you should
downshift to the next lower gea r. T he red area at
the end of the scale indicates max imum permis­
sible eng ine RPM after the break-in period . Be­
fore reachi ng this area, move the selector lever to
position D/S or ease your foot off the accelerator
pedal.

should o nly briefly be in the red zone: you
co uld damage your eng ine! The beginn ing of
the r ed zone varies depending on the engine.

Starting the Auto-Check sequence
The Auto-Check system constantly monitors cer­
tain individual functions and components of the
vehicle when the ignition is turned on and when
the vehicle is moving .
With the ign ition turned on, you can start the
"Auto-Check sequence" by pressing the
I SE TI but­
ton. You can perform an Auto-Check sequence
when the vehicle is sta tionary and the ign it ion is
tu rned on o r whe n th e vehicle is moving slowe r
t h an 3 mph (5 km/ h).
In add ition , the number of keys init ia lised for
your vehicle is disp layed .
L2 3/3 means that
th ree keys have be en initialised. This feature ena­
bles used car buye rs to make sure they have r e­
c e ived all of the keys.
If you are g iven only two keys, for instance, you
should take the vehicle and the existing keys to
an a utho rized Aud i dea le r to have the miss ing key
disabled.
It i s also important to no tify your insur­
ance company abo ut the loss.
Setting the sp eed warning
By pressi ng the !SET ! button briefly, you can set
th reshold 1 of the speed wa rn ing while you are
dr iv ing ¢page 80. By ma intai ning pressure on

9:::1: Engine oil pressure
The red engine oil pressure warning symbol re­
quires immediate service or repair . Driving with a
low-oil-pressure indication is likely to inflict se­
vere damage to the engine.
• Turn off engin e! Oil pressure too low
If the indicator light t urns on and the message
appears, the oil pressure is too low.
• Pull
off the road.
• Stop the vehicle .
• Turnoff the engine.
• Check the engine oil level ¢ page 199.
• If the engine oil level is too low, add engine oil
¢ page 199. Make sure that the o il pressure
warning symbol. appears no longe r in the
display before you start dr iving again.
• If the engi ne oil leve l is correct a nd the ind ica­
tor light st ill turns on, turn the eng ine
off and
do not continue driving . Seek p rofess ional as ­
s istance .
(D Tips
- The engine oil pressure symbol. is not
an indicator for a low engine oil level. Do
not rely on it. Instead , check the oil level in
your engine at regular intervals, prefe rably
each time you refuel, and always before
going on a long trip.
- The yellow oil level warning indication

out delay. Do not wait until the red oil pressure warning. starts to flash before

A malfunction in the engine cooling system must
be repaired as soon as possible .
• Turn off eng ine and check coolant level
If the indicator light turns on and the message
appears, the coolant temperature is too high o r

Opening and closing
Central locking
General description
The power locking system locks or unlocks all
doors and the rear lid simultaneously.
You can lock and unlock the vehicle centrally. You
have the following choices:
- Remote master key
c:::> page 32,
-Door handles with convenience key*
c:::> page 32,
-Lock cylinder at the dr iver's door c:::> page 34,
or
- Power locking switch inside
c:::> page 33.
Au tomatic locking
The automat ic locking feature locks all the veh i­
cle doors and the rear l id when you drive faster
than 9 mph ( 15 km/h).
The car is unlocked again once the ignition key is
removed . In add ition, the vehicle can be unlocked
if the opening function in the power locking sys­
tem sw itch or at one of the door levers is actuat­
ed. The Auto Lock function can be turned on and
off in the rad io or MMI*
c:::> page 34.
Additionally, in the event of a crash with a irbag
deployment the doors are automatically un­ locked to allow access to the vehicle .
Selective unlo cking
When you lock the vehicle, the power locking sys­
tem w ill lock the doors and the rear lid. When un ­
lock ing, you can set in the radio or MMI* whether
only the drive r's door o r the ent ire vehicle should
be un locked
c:::> page 34.
Anti- theft alarm w arning sy stem
If the anti-theft alarm warning system detects a
break-in into the vehicle, acoustic and v isual
warn ing s ignals are tr iggered .
The anti-theft warning system is activated auto­
mat ically when you lock the vehicle. It is deact i­
vated when unlocking using the remote key, w ith
the mechanical key, and when you switch on the
i gnit ion.
Op ening and cl osing
The alarm also turns off when the a larm cycle has
expired.
Turn signals
When you unlock the veh icle, the turn s ignals
flash twice, when you lock it once. If they do not
flash , one of the doors, the luggage compart­
ment lid or the hood is not locked or the ignition
is still switched on.
Unint entionally l ocking your self out
In the follow ing cases there safeguards to pre­
vent you locking your remote master key in the
vehicle:
- The vehicle does not lock w ith the power lock­
ing sw itch
c:::> page 33 if the driver's door is
open.
- On veh icles with co nvenience key*, if the most
recently used master key is in the luggage com­
par tment, the rear lid is automatically unlocked
again after it is closed .
Do not lock your veh icle w ith the remote master
key or co nvenience key* unt il all doors and the
rear lid are closed. In this way you avoid locking
yourself out accidentally .
A WARNING ,-c=-
-When you leave the vehicle, always remove
the ignition key and take it with you. This
will prevent passengers (children, for exam­
ple) from accidentally being locked in the
veh icle should they accidentally press the
power locking sw itch in the front doors .
- Do not leave children inside the vehicle un­
supervised . In an emergency it would be im­
possible to open the doors from the outs ide
without the key.
(D Tips
- In the event of a crash with airbag deploy­
ment all locked doors w ill be automatically
unlocked to give access to the veh icle occu­
pants from the outside.
- If the power locking system should mal­
function, you can lock the driver's door us­ ing the mecha nical key

Emergency unlocking of the ignition key
In the event of malfunctions in the electrical sys­
tem, it may happen that you cannot remove the
ignition key.

If the vehicle is unlocked and no door, the rear lid
or the hood is opened within 60 seconds, the ve­
hicle locks itself again automatically . This feature
prevents the vehicle from being accidentally left
unlocked over a long period of time .

On vehicles with automatic transmission, these­
lector lever must be in the P position, otherwise
the vehicle cannot be locked .

-In order to make sure the locking function is
working, you should always keep your eye
on the vehicle to make sure it is properly
locked .
- Do not use the remote control if you are in­
side the car, otherwise you may unintention­
ally lock the vehicle, and then you would set
off the anti-theft alarm when you try to
start the engine or open a door. In case this
happens anyhow, push the unlock button@.
- Use the panic function only if you are in an
emergency situation.

Locking and unlocking with convenience

The doors and the rear lid can be unlocked and
locked without operating the master key .

Automatic transmission
This prevents too much stress from being placed
on the locking mechanism.
Vehicles with multitronic transmission: Your vehi­
cle is equipped with
hill hold assist allowing you
to start while on an incline. The system is activat­
ed when the brake pedal is pressed down and
held
for a few seconds. The brake pressure will
hold for
a momen t after the brake pedal loosens
t o preven t the vehicle from rolling backwards
while starting up .
A WARNING
- The vehicle can also roll when the engine is
stopped .
- Unintended vehicle movement can cause se­ rious injury .
- Never leave your vehicle with the engine
running while in gear.
If you must leave your
vehicle when the engine is running, activate
the parking brake and move the selector lev­
er to
P.
-Power is still transmitted to the wheels
when the engine is running at idle. To pre­
vent the vehicle from "creeping", you must
keep your foot on the brake when the engine
is running and the selector lever is in 0/5 or
R or "tiptronic" mode is selected.
- Do not press the accelerator pedal when changing the selector lever position while
the vehicle is stationary and the engine is
running .
- Never shift into R or P while driving.
- Before driving down a steep slope, reduce
your speed and shift into a lower gear with
"tiptronic".
- Do not ride the brakes or press the brake
pedal too often or too long when driving
down a hill. Constant braking causes the
brakes to overheat and substantially re­
duces braking performance, increases brak­
ing distance or causes complete failure of
the brake system .
- To prevent the vehicle from rolling back
when stopping on inclines, always hold it in
place with the brake pedal or parking brake.
- Never hold the vehicle on an incline with a
slipping clutch. The clutch opens automati-

cally when it becomes too hot from the

when the clutch is overloaded.
- If the engine must remain running, never
have any driving position engaged when
checking under the hood . Make sure these­
lector lever has securely engaged and is
locked in P with the parking brake set
¢ page 195. Otherwise, any increase in en­
gine speed may set the vehicle in motion,
even with the parking brake applied.
(D Note
- 5 tronic- and tiptronic transmission: When
stopping on an incline, do not try to hold
the vehicle in place by pressing the accelera­
tor pedal while a driving gear is selected.
This can cause the transmission to overheat
and can damage it. Activate the parking
brake or press the brake pedal to prevent
the vehicle from rolling.
- 5 tronic- and tiptronic transmission: Allow­
ing the vehicle to roll when the engine is
stopped and the selector lever is in N will
damage the transmission because it is not
lubricated under those circumstances .
(D Tips
For safety reasons, the parking brake is re­
leased automatically only when the driver's
safety belt is engaged in the buckle .
· Hill descent control
App lies to vehicles: wit h mult itronic/S tronic/tiptronic
The hill descent control system assists the driver
when driving down declines.
Hill descent control is activated when the selec­
tor lever is in 0/5 and you press the brake pedal.
The transmission automatically selects a gear
that is suitable for the incline. Hill descent con­
trol tries to maintain the speed achieved at the
time of braking, within physical and technical
limitations.
It may still be necessary to adjust the
speed with the brakes. .,.

Releasing and opening the engine hood
The engine hood is released from inside the vehi­
cle.

Before opening the engine hood, make sure that
the windshield wipers are flat against the wind­
shield . Otherwise, they could damage the paint
on the hood.

Closing the engine hood

A WARNING
A hood that is not comp letely latched could
fly up and block your view while driving.
- When you close the engine hood, check it to
make sure the safety catch has properly en­
gaged . The hood should be flush with the
surrounding vehicle body parts.
- If you notice while driv ing that the hood is
not secured properly, stop at once and close
it.
Working in the engine compartment
Be especially careful whenever you work in the
engine compartment.
-
Whenever you must perform any work in the
engine compartment, for example checking and
filling different fluids , there i s a risk of injury ,
burns and accidents. To prevent personal injury
always observe the following WARNINGS . The
engine compartment of any vehicle is a hazard­
ous area

A WARNING

To help avoid injury, before you check any-
thing under the hood:
- Turn off the engine.
- Remove the ignition key .
- Apply the parking brake.
- Move selector lever of automatic transmis-
sion to "P" (Park) .
-Always let the engine cool down. Hot com ­
ponents wi ll burn skin on contact .
- To reduce the risk of being burned, never
open the hood if you see or hear steam o r
coo lant escaping from the engine

compartment. Wait until no steam or cool­
ant can be seen or heard before carefully
opening the hood.
- Keep children away from the engine com­
partment.
- Never spill fluids on hot engine compo­
nents. They can cause a fire.
- Never touch the radiator fan. The auxiliary
electric fan is temperature controlled and
can switch on suddenly.
- Never open the coolant reservoir cap when
the engine is still warm . The coolant system
is pressurized and hot coolant could spray
out .
- Protect your face, hands and arm from
steam or hot engine coolant by placing a
thick rag over the cap when you open the coolant reservoir .
- Do not remove the engine cover under any
circumstances . This increases the risk of
burns .
- If work on the fuel system or the electrical
system is necessary :
= Always disconnect the battery.
- Never smoke or work near heaters or open
flames. Fluids in the engine compartment
could start a fire.
- Keep an approved fire extinguisher imme­
diately available.
- To avoid electrical shock and personal injury
while the engine is running or being started,
never touch:
- Ignition cables
- Other components of the high voltage
electronic ignition system.
- If you must perform a check or repair with
the engine running:
- First, fully apply the parking brake, move
selector lever of automatic transmission
to "P" (Park) .
- Always use extreme caution to prevent
clothing, jewelry, or long hair from getting

caught in the radiator fan, V-belts or other
moving parts, or from contacting hot
parts. Tie back hair before starting, and do
not wear clothing that will hang or droop
into the engine.
- Minimize exposure to emission and chemi­
cal hazards

and certain vehicle components contain or

- Battery posts, terminals and related acces­

filler opening, otherwise serious damage to
vehicle systems will occur.

To detect leaks in time, inspect the vehicle
floor pan from underneath regularly. If you
see spots from oil or other vehicle fluids, have
your vehicle inspected by an authorized Audi dealer .

requires great care and may take some time.
An authorized Audi dealer has instructions
about how to measure oil consumption ac­

perature.
• Switch only the ignition back on.
• Wait approx. two minutes.

Depending on the way the vehicle is driven and
the operating conditions, oil consumpt ion can be
up to a 1/2 quart per 600 miles (O.S liter per
1,000 km) . Consumption may be higher within
the first 3,000 miles (S,000 km).
@ Tips
The oil level indicator in the MMI* Display is
only an information disp lay. If the oil level is
too low, a minimum oil warn ing appears in
the instrument cluster. Add oi l

If the hood has been opened, the current oil
level is shown in the instrument cluster the
next time the ignition is switched on.
