In recirculation mode, the air ins ide the vehicle is
circu lated and filtered . This prevents the unfil ­
tered air outside the vehicle from entering the
ve hicle interior . We recommend switching recir­
culation mode on when driving through a tunne l
or when sitting in traffic

The IAU TOI button or lllll> F RONT I button switches
recirculation mode off .
IAUTOI Switching automatic mode on
Automatic mode ma inta ins a constant tempera­
ture inside the vehicle. A ir temperature, airflow
and ai r distribution are controlled automatica lly .
Adjusting th e tempe ratur e
Temperatures between 60 °F (+16 °C) and 84 °F
( + 28 °C) can be set. Outside of this range,
LO or
HI will appear in the cl imate control system dis­
p lay. At both of these settings, the climate con­
trol system r uns continuously at maximum cool­
i n g or heating power. There is no temperat ure
regulation.
~ Ad justing the airflow
You can adjust the a irf low manually to su it yo ur
needs . To have the airf low regulated automatica l­
ly, press the
IAUTO I button .
~ Adjusting the air distribution
You can manually se lect the vents where the air
will flow. To have the air distr ibution reg ulated
automatically , press the
!AUTO ! button.
QJ Adjusting seat h eating *
Pressing the button sw itches the seat heating on
at the h ighest setting (level 3) . The LEDs indicate
the tempe ratu re leve l. To reduce the tempe ra­
ture, press the button again . To switch the seat
heating off, press the button repeatedly unt il the
L ED turns off .
Afte r 10 minutes, the seat heat ing automat ica lly
sw itches from level 3 to leve l 2.
~ Adjust ing seat ventilation*
Pressing the button switches the seat ventilation
on at the highest setting (level 3) . The LEDs indi-

cate the ventilation level. To reduce the ventila ­
tion level, press the button again. To switch the
seat ventilation off , press the button repeatedly
u nt il the LED turns off .
I@ FRONT I Switch the defro ste r on /off
The w indshield and side windows are defrosted
or cleared of condensation as q uickly as possib le.
The maximum amount of air f lows mainly from
the vents below the windshield. Recirculation
mode switches off. The temperature should be
set to 72 °F (22 °C) or h igher. The temperature is
controlled automat ically.

lliil REAR I Switch ing rear window he ater on /
off
The rear window heater on ly operates when the
engine is runn ing . It switches off automatically
after a few minutes, depending on the outside
temperature.
To prevent the rear window heater from switch­ ing off automatically, press and hold the
I Cliil REARI
button for more than 2 seconds. This remains
stored until the ignit ion is switched off.
Air vents
You can open and close the center and rear air
vents using the th umbwhee ls . The levers adjust
the d irection of the airflow from the vents.
In vehicles with a 3-zone deluxe automa tic cli­
mate control system*, you can adjust the air tem­
perature in the rear by turning the thumbwhee l
toward the red side to make it warmer or toward
the blue side to make it cooler.
A WARNING
- Do not use the recircu lation for extended
periods of time. The windows could fog up
since no fresh air can enter the vehicle. If
the wi ndows fog up, press the air rec ircula­
tion button again immed iate ly to sw itch off
the air recirc ulation func tion or selec t de­
frost.
- I ndivid ua ls w ith red uced sensitivity to pain
or tempera ture could develop burns when
using the seat heating f unction . To reduce

Presetting your speed
You can preset your desired speed while the vehi­
cle is not moving .
.,. Switch on the ignition .

You can continue driving
S tronic transmission: There is a system malfunc­
tion in the transmission. The transmission is
switching to emergency mode. This mode only
shifts into certain gears or will no longer shift at
all. The engine may stall. You cannot engage the
reverse gear. Drive to your authorized Audi dea ler
or qualified repair facility immediately to have
the ma lfunction corrected .
rm Transmission malfunction: Stop vehicle and
shift to park.
Do not continue driving. Select the P se lector lev­
er position and see your authorized Audi dealer
or qualified repair facility for assistance.
([) Note
If the transmission switches to emergency
mode, you shou ld take the vehicle to an au­
thorized Audi dealersh ip as soon as possible
to have the condit ion corrected.
Selector lever emergency release
Applies to vehicles: with multitronic/5 tronic/tiptronic
If the vehicle's power supply foils, the selector
lever can be released in an emergency.

position if the key is in the lock and the ignition is
switched on . If the power supply fails (for exam­
ple, the battery is discharged) and the vehicle

Introduction

The adaptive cruise control system assists the
d river by regu lating veh icle speed and he lp ing to
maintain a set distance to the vehicle ahead,
within the limits of the system. If the system de­
tects a moving vehicle up ahead, adaptive cruise control can brake and then accelerate your vehi ­
cle. This helps to make driving more comfortable
on long highway stretches.
The braking guard system can warn you about an impending collision and initiate brak ing maneu­
vers
c> page 96.
Adapt ive cruise control and braking guard have
technical limitations that you must know, so p lease read this section carefully, understand
how the system works and use them properly at
all times.

The area that contains the radar sensor

other objects or obstructed with dirt, insects,
snow or ice that w ill interfere with the adaptive
cru ise control system and braking guard. Fo r i n­
formation on cleaning, refer to

same appl ies for any modifications made in the
front area.

The function of the adaptive cruise contro l sys­
tem and braking guard is limited under some
cond it ions:
- Objects can on ly be detected when they are
within sensor range
,=;, page 92, fig. 106.
- T he system has a limi ted ability to detect ob­
jects that are a short d istance ahead, off to the
side of your vehicle or moving into your lane.
- Some k inds of veh icles are hard to detect; for
example motorcycles, vehicles with high
ground clearance or overhanging toads may be
detected when it is too late or they may not be
detected at all.
- When driving through curves

& WARNING
-Always pay attention to traffic when adaptive
cruise control is switched on and braking
guard is active. As the driver, you are still re ­
sponsible for starting and for maintaining
speed and distance to other objects. Braking
guard is used to assist you . The driver must
a lways take action to avo id a collis ion. The
driver is always responsible for braking at the
correct t ime.
- I mprope r use of adaptive cru ise con tro l can
cause collisions, o ther accidents and serious
personal injury.
- Never let the comfort and conven ience that
adapt ive cr uise control and brak ing guard
offer distrac t you from the need to be alert
to traffic cond it ions and the need to remain
in fu ll control of your vehicle at all times,
- Always remember that the adaptive cruise
contro l and brak ing guard have limits - they
will not slow the vehicle down or maintain
the set distance when you dr ive towards an
obstacle or something on or near the road
that is not moving, such as vehicles stopped in a traff ic jam, a stalled or disab led vehicle.
If registered by the radar sensor, vehicles or
obstacles that are not moving can trigge r a
co llision warning and if confirmed by the
video camera, a n acute collision warning.

What can Audi adaptive cruise control do?
The adaptive cruise control works in conjunction
with a radar sensor instal led in the front of the
vehicle
¢ page 90, fig. 103, which is subject to
designated system limits¢

objects are disregarded.
On open roads w ith no traff ic, adaptive cruise
control works like a regula r cruise control system.
The stored speed is mainta ined . When approach­
ing a moving vehicle detected up ahead, the
adaptive cruise control system automatically
slows down to match that vehicle's spe ed and
then maintains the distance that the d river previ ­
ously stored. A s soon as the system does not de­
t ec t a vehicle up ahead, adap tive cruise control
accelerates back up to the stored speed .
Which functions can be controlled?
When you switch adaptive cruise control on, you
can set the current speed as the "control speed"
¢ page 92 , Swit ch ing on and off.
When driving, you can stop cruise control

any time.

detected and class ified as crit ica l. The display in
the respective mirror tu rns on, but is dim.
Aud i side assist
The display remains d im intentionally in the in­
formation stage so that your view toward the
front is not d isturbed .
Warning sta ge
If you activ ate the turn s ignal, s ide ass ist warns
you about vehicles that are detected a nd classi­
fied as critica l. The d isplay in the respective mir ­
ror blinks brightly . If this happens, check traffic
by g lancing in the rearview mirror and over your
shoulder

@ Vehicles that are approaching
In certain cases, a vehicle will be classified as
critical for a lane change even if it is still some­
what far away. The faste r a vehicle approaches,
the soo ner t he d isplay in the exter io r mirro r will
turn on.
@ Vehicles traveling with you
Vehicles traveling w ith you are indicated in the
exterior mirror if they are classified as critical for
a lane change. All vehicles detected by side assist

are indicated by the time they enter your "blind
spot", at the latest.
© Vehicles left behind
If you slowly pass a veh icle that side assist has
detected (the difference in speed between the ve­
hicle and your vehicle is less than 9 mph (1 S km/
h)), the display in the exterior mirror turns on as
soon as the vehicle enters your blind spot.
T he display will not turn on if you quickly pass a
vehicle that side ass ist has detected (the differ­
ence in speed between the vehicle and your vehi­
cle is greater than 9 mph (15 km/h)).
Functional limitations
The radar senso rs are designed to detect the left
and right adjacent lanes when the road lanes are
the normal width. In certain situations , the dis­
play in the exterior mirror may turn on even
though there is no vehicle located in the area that
i s cr itical for a lane change. For example:
- if the lanes are narrow or if your are dr iving on
the edge of your lane. If thi s is the case, the
system may have detected the vehicle in anoth­
er lane that is
not adjacent to your current lane.
- if yo u are driving through a c urve . Side assist
may react to a vehicle that is one lane over from
the adjacent lane.
- if side assist reacts to other objects (such as
high or disp laced guard rails).
- In poor weather conditions . The side assist
functions are limited.
Do not cover the radar senso rs
q fig. 117 with
stickers, deposits, bicycle wheels or other ob­
jects, because this will affect the function . Do not
use side assist when towing a trailer. For infor ­
mation on cleaning, refer to
q page 184.
A WARNING
- Always pay attention to traffic and to the
area around your veh icle. S ide ass ist cannot
replace a dr iver's attention. The driver alone
is always responsible for lane changes and
sim ila r driv ing maneuvers.

Audi side assist
(D Tips
-Side assist is not active while you are mak­
ing the adjustment.
- Your settings are automatically stored and
assigned to the remote control key being
used.
Driver messages

If side assist switches off by itself, the LED in the
button turns
off and a message will appear in the
instrument cluster display:
Audi side assist unavailable: Sensors blocked
The radar sensors' vision is affected. Do not cover
the area in front of the sensors with bike wheels,
stickers, dirt or other objects. Clean the area in
front of the sensors, if necessary ¢

Audi side assist: Currently unavailable
Side assist cannot be switched on temporarily be­
cause there is a malfunction (for example, the
battery charge level may be too low).
Audi side assist: System fault!
The system cannot guarantee that it will detect
vehicles correctly and it is switched off . The sen­
sors have been displaced or are faulty. Have the
system checked by an authorized Audi dealer or
authorized Audi Service Facility soon.
Audi side assist: Unavailable when towing
Side assist switches off automatically when a fac­
tory-installed trailer hitch is connected to the
electrical connector on the trailer. There is no
guarantee the system will switch off when using
a retrofitted trailer hitch. Do not use side assist
when towing a trailer.
