When stopping at a traffic signal or stopp ing in
city traffic on vehicles with an automatic trans­
miss ion, the park ing brake can be applied . T he
vehicle does not have to be held with the foot ­
brake. The parking brak e eliminates the tendency
to creep with a drive range engaged . As soon as
you dr ive off as usual , the parking brake is re­
leased automatically and the veh icle starts to
move.
Starting on sl opes
When starting on inclines, the star ting ass ist pre­
vents the vehicle from unintentionally rolling back. The braking force of the parking brake is
not released until sufficient driv ing force has
been b uilt up at the whee ls .
(D Tips
For safety reasons, the park ing brake is re­
leased automatically only when the dr iver's
safety belt is engaged in the buckle.
Starting off w ith a trailer
T o prevent rolling back unintentionally on an in­
cline, do the following:
.,. Keep the switch@q page 77, fig . 92 pulled
and depress the accelerator . The park ing b rake
stays applied and prevents the vehicle from
ro lling bac kward .
.. You can release the switc h @ once you are su re
t h at you a re developing enough driving force at
the whee ls by depressing the acce lerator .
D epending on the weight o f the r ig (veh icle and
trai ler) and the seve rity of the in cli ne, you may
roll backwards as you sta rt. Yo u can prevent roll ­
i n g bac kwards by ho lding the parking brake
switch @ pulled out and acce lerating -just as
you would when starting on a hill with a conven ­
tional hand brake .
Driving
Emergency braking
In the event that the conventional brake system
fails or locks .
.. In an emergency, pull the sw itch @ q page 77,
fig . 92 and continue to pull it to slow your vehi­
cle down with the parking brake .
.. As soon as you release the switch @ or accele r-
ate, the b ra ki ng process stops.
If you pull the switch @and hold it above a
speed of about 5 mph (8 km/h), the emergency braking function is i nitiated . The vehicle is b raked
at all fo ur whee ls by act ivati ng the hydrau lic
brake system. The br ake performan ce is s imi la r
to maki ng a n emergency stop

In order not to act ivate the eme rgency braking by
mis take, an aud ib le warn ing tone (buz ze r)
sounds when the swi tc h @ is p ulled. As soon as
the switch @ is re lease d, or the acce le rator pedal
is depressed, emergency braking stops.
A WARNING
=
Emergency braking should on ly be used in an
emergency, when the norma l foot brake has
failed or the brake peda l is obstructed. Us ing
the parking brake to perfo rm emergency brak­
ing will slow your vehicle down as if you had
made a full bra ke application . T he laws of
physics cannot be suspended ev en with ESC
and its a ssociated components (A BS, ASR,
E DS). In co rners and when road o r we ather
conditions are ba d, a f ull brake applica tion
can cause the ve hicl e to skid o r the rear end to
b reak away -risking an accident.
Speed warning system
Overview
The speed warning sys tem helps you to keep your
driving speed below a set speed limit.
The speed warn ing system warns if the driver ex­
ceeds a previous ly s tored maximum speed. A
warning tone will sound as soon as the veh icle
speed exceeds the set speed by about 3 mph
(3 km/h) . At the same time, a warning symbo l

Information stag e
As long as you do not activate the turn signal,
side assist
informs you about ve hicl es that a re
detected and class ified as crit ica l. The display in
the respective mirror tu rns on, but is dim.
Aud i side assist
The display remains d im intentionally in the in­
formation stage so that your view toward the
front is not d isturbed .
Warning sta ge
If you activ ate the turn s ignal, s ide ass ist warns
you about vehicles that are detected a nd classi­
fied as critica l. The d isplay in the respective mir ­
ror blinks brightly . If this happens, check traffic
by g lancing in the rearview mirror and over your
shoulder

@ Vehicles that are approaching
In certain cases, a vehicle will be classified as
critical for a lane change even if it is still some­
what far away. The faste r a vehicle approaches,
the soo ner t he d isplay in the exter io r mirro r will
turn on.
@ Vehicles traveling with you
Vehicles traveling w ith you are indicated in the
exterior mirror if they are classified as critical for
a lane change. All vehicles detected by side assist

are indicated by the time they enter your "blind
spot", at the latest.
© Vehicles left behind
If you slowly pass a veh icle that side assist has
detected (the difference in speed between the ve­
hicle and your vehicle is less than 9 mph (1 S km/
h)), the display in the exterior mirror turns on as
soon as the vehicle enters your blind spot.
T he display will not turn on if you quickly pass a
vehicle that side ass ist has detected (the differ­
ence in speed between the vehicle and your vehi­
cle is greater than 9 mph (15 km/h)).
Functional limitations
The radar senso rs are designed to detect the left
and right adjacent lanes when the road lanes are
the normal width. In certain situations , the dis­
play in the exterior mirror may turn on even
though there is no vehicle located in the area that
i s cr itical for a lane change. For example:
- if the lanes are narrow or if your are dr iving on
the edge of your lane. If thi s is the case, the
system may have detected the vehicle in anoth­
er lane that is
not adjacent to your current lane.
- if yo u are driving through a c urve . Side assist
may react to a vehicle that is one lane over from
the adjacent lane.
- if side assist reacts to other objects (such as
high or disp laced guard rails).
- In poor weather conditions . The side assist
functions are limited.
Do not cover the radar senso rs
q fig. 117 with
stickers, deposits, bicycle wheels or other ob­
jects, because this will affect the function . Do not
use side assist when towing a trailer. For infor ­
mation on cleaning, refer to
q page 184.
A WARNING
- Always pay attention to traffic and to the
area around your veh icle. S ide ass ist cannot
replace a dr iver's attention. The driver alone
is always responsible for lane changes and
sim ila r driv ing maneuvers.

Audi side assist
(D Tips
-Side assist is not active while you are mak­
ing the adjustment.
- Your settings are automatically stored and
assigned to the remote control key being
used.
Driver messages
Applies to veh icles: w ith Aud i side ass ist
If side assist switches off by itself, the LED in the
button turns
off and a message will appear in the
instrument cluster display:
Audi side assist unavailable: Sensors blocked
The radar sensors' vision is affected. Do not cover
the area in front of the sensors with bike wheels,
stickers, dirt or other objects. Clean the area in
front of the sensors, if necessary ¢

Side assist cannot be switched on temporarily be­
cause there is a malfunction (for example, the
battery charge level may be too low).
Audi side assist: System fault!
The system cannot guarantee that it will detect
vehicles correctly and it is switched off . The sen­
sors have been displaced or are faulty. Have the
system checked by an authorized Audi dealer or
authorized Audi Service Facility soon.
Audi side assist: Unavailable when towing
Side assist switches off automatically when a fac­
tory-installed trailer hitch is connected to the
electrical connector on the trailer. There is no
guarantee the system will switch off when using
a retrofitted trailer hitch. Do not use side assist
when towing a trailer.

-Sensors have dead spaces in which objects
cannot be detected . Be especially alert for
small chi ldren and animals, since they are
not always detected by the sensors .
- The acoustic parking system is not a substi­
tute for the dr iver's own caution and alert­
ness. Ultimate responsibility always remains
with the driver during parking and sim ilar
maneuvers . A lways watch where you are
dr iv ing .
- You should always adjust the volume and
frequency of the warning tones so that you
can eas ily hear the acoustic distance warn­
ing
even if the radio is playing, the air-cond i­
tioner blower is on High or there is a high
level of outs ide no ise.
- Check the settings whenever anyone else
has driven the vehicle be fore you.
(D Note
- Remember that low obstacles for whic h a
warning has already been issued may "dive"
below the system 's sensing zone if the vehi­
cle is being backed up closer . In this case,
the warn ing sound shutting off does
not in­
dicate that you have cleared the obstacle.
Instead, impact is imm inent.
- Objects such as trailer h itches, cha ins, nar ­
row posts or fences covered by a thin layer
of pa int may not a lways be detected by the
system. They can still damage your vehicle
wi thou t warn ing.
{O) Tips
Keep the sensors in the rear bumper clean
and free of snow and ice so that the acoust ic
parking assist system can f unction properly.
Adjusting the warning tones
Applies to vehicles: with parking system (rear)
The warning tones can be adjusted in the MMI*.

Parking Sy stem

The newly adjusted value is briefly hea rd from
the signal generator . T he settings are automat i­

the steering wheel angle. The vehicle front
swings out more than the vehicle rear. Main­
tain plenty of distance from an obstacle so
that your outside mirror or a corner of your
vehicle does not collide with any obstacles -

Parallel Parking

Use parking mode 2 to help you park on the edge
of a street.

much earlier . There should be a sufficient amount
of space between the curb and the blue curve,
and the blue curve
