The vehicle can be locked and unlocked at any door. The remote control key cannot be more
than 1.5 m away from the door handle. It makes
no difference whether the master key is in your
jacket pocket or in your brief case.
If you grip the door handle while locking, this can
adversely affect the locking function.
It is not possible to re-open the door for a brief
period directly after closing it. This allows you to
ensure that the doors are properly locked.
It depends on the settings in the radio or MM!*
whether the entire vehicle is unlocked or one of
the doors

If your vehicle has been standing for an ex­
tended period, please note the following:
- The proximity sensors are deactivated after
a few days to save power. You then have to
pull on the door handle once to unlock the
vehicle and a second time to open the vehi­
cle.
- To prevent the battery from being dis­
charged and to preserve your vehicle's abili­
ty to start for as long as possible, the ener­
gy management system gradually switches
off unnecessary convenience functions. It is possible that you will not be able to unlock
your vehicle using these convenience func­ tions.

If you lock the vehicle using the power locking
switch, please note the following:
- If a door is open, the vehicle cannot be locked
using the power locking system switch.
- You cannot open the doors or the rear lid from
the
outside (increased security, for example
when you are stopped at a red light).
- The diodes in the power locking switch illumi­
nate when all the doors are closed and locked.
- You can unlock and open the doors from the in­
side by pulling on the door handle.
- If you have a crash and the airbag is activated,
the doors automatically unlock.
A WARNING "-
- The power locking switch works with the ig-
nition off and automatically locks the entire
vehicle when it is actuated.
- On a vehicle locked from the outside the
power locking system switch is inoperative.
- Locked doors make it more difficult for
emergency workers to get into the vehicle,
which puts lives at risk. Do not leave anyone
behind in the vehicle, especially children.

Electronic immobilizer
The immobilizer prevents your vehicl e from b eing
started by unauthor ized persons .
Inside the key there is a computer chip . This chip
automatically activates/deactivates the electron­ ic immobilizer .
Applies to vehicl es with ignition lock :
The electron ic immobilizer deactivates automati­
cally when you insert the remote control key into
the ignition lock . It activates again automatically
when you remove the remote control key from
the ignition lock .
Applies to vehicl es with conveni ence k ey :
If the remote control key is located inside the ve ­
h icle and you press the
! S TAR T ENGINE STOPI
button , the electronic immobilizer deactivates
automatically. If yo u switch the ignit ion off and
remove the remote control key from the vehicle,
the elec tronic immobili zer ac tivates again au to­
mat ically .
A WARNING
Always take the key with you when you leave
the vehicle . The key can disa rm the electron ic
engine immob ilizer and permit an unau thor­
i z ed person to start the eng ine and enable op­
eration of the veh icle systems such as power
w indow o r powe r su nroof leading to serious
personal inj ury .

adaptive light*
When switched on, adap tive ligh t ad ap ts to
curves in the road depending on the vehicle
speed and the steering ang le. This provides bet­
ter light ing through the curve. The system oper­
ates at speeds between approximately 6 mph
(10 km/h) and 68 mph (110 km/h).
Static cornering light* (vehicles with adaptive
li ght) -the corne ring light switches on at speeds
up to approximate ly 25 mph (40 km/h) when a
certain steering wheel angle is reached or when a
turn s ignal is act ivated . T he area to the side of
the ve hicle is illuminated better when turning .
The adaptive light and the cornering light only
funct io n when the switc h is in the AUTO position
(automat ic head lights*) .
A WARNING
- Daytime r unning lights and a utomat ic head­
lights* are only intended to as sist the driver .
T h ey do not re lieve the driver of his respon­
sibility to c heck t he hea dlights and to tur n
t hem on m anually ac co rding to the cur rent
light and visibili ty conditions. Fo r exam ple,
fog cannot be detected by the light sen­
sors*. So a lways sw itch on the headlights

under these weather conditi ons and when
driving in the dark.
- Crashes can happen when y ou cannot see
the road ahead and when you cannot be
seen by ot her moto rists. Always tu rn on the
headlights so that yo u ca n see ahead a nd so
that othe rs can see yo ur ca r from the back.
- Please obey all laws when usi ng the lighting
sys tems described here.

driver . T he driver is still responsible for
manually switching the wipers on according
to the v is ibility conditions .
- The w indshield may not be treated w ith wa­
ter -repelling windsh ield coating agents . Un ­
favorable condit ions, such as wetness, dark­
ness, low sun, can result in increased g lare.
Wiper b lade chatter is also possible.
- Properly functioning w indshield w iper
blades are required for a clear view and safe

- Worn or dirty windshie ld w iper blades result
i n streaking. This can affect the rain sensor*
funct ion. Check your windshield wiper
blades regularly .
- The washer fluid nozzles of the windshield
washer system are heated at low tempera­
tures when the ignit ion is on.

- W hen stopping temporarily, (e .g. at a traffic
light) the set speed of the windshield wipers
is automat ica lly reduced by one speed.
Cleaning windshield wiper blades
Clean the windshie ld w iper blades when they be­
gin to leave streaks . Use a soft cloth and glass
cleaner to clean the windshield w iper blades .

Memory function
Description
Applies to vehicles: with memory function
The memory function allows you to quick ly and
eas ily store and recall personal seating profiles
for the driver. The memo ry function is operated
through the master key and the memory buttons
in the driver's door.
The driver's seating profile is stored and assigned
to the master key each time the veh icle is locked.
When you open the door, the seat profile is auto­
matically recalled. If two people use one vehicle,
it is recommended that each person always uses
"their own" master key.
Up to 2 seat profiles can be stored in the memory
buttons in the driver's door. Once they are stored,
these seat profiles can be selected at any time .
I n addition to the driver's seat settings, you can
also store and access the exterior mirror adjust­ ment settings* using the remote control key or
memory button.

To assign the driver's seat settings to the remote
control key when locking the vehicle, the function
must be activated in the radio or

Switching the memory function on/off
.,. Press the ION/OFF ! button to switch the memo­
ry function on/off. The word
OFF lights up when
the memory function is switched off. Seat pro­
files are neither stored nor recalled .
Storing a seat profile
.,. Press the ISETI button. When the word SET
lights up, the memory is ready to store set­
tings.
• Press a memory button
(ill or [II) briefly. A tone
confirms that the settings were stored.
Accessing a seat profile
.,. If the driver's door is open and the ignition is
switched off, press the memory button .
.,. If the driver's door is closed or the ignition is
switched on, press and hold the memory but­
ton until the seat adjustment is complete.
.8, WARNING
- For safety reasons, the seat setting can only
be recalled when the vehicle is stationary -
otherwise you risk having an accident.
- In an emergency the recall procedure can be
cancelled by pressing the
ION/OFF I switch or
by tapping the memory buttons.

b lower speed and the air distrib ution . The LED in
a button will light up when the function is
switched on. The settings are displayed for a few
seconds in the radio or MMI* display.
In vehicles with a 3-zone del uxe automat ic cl i­

senger side can be adjusted separately. The set·

IOFF I Switching the climate control system
on/off
The i OFF i button switches the climate contro l
system on or off. It also sw itches on when you
press the knob. Airflow from outside is blocked
when the climate control system is switched off.
IA/Cl Switching cooling mode on/off
The air is not coo led and humidity is not removed
when cool ing mode is switched off. This can
cause fog on the windows . The cooling mode is
switched off automatically at low outside tern· peratures. .,.
