Removing the wiper blade
• Fold the windshield wiper arm away from
the windshie ld .
• Press the locking knob@¢
fig. 50 on the
wiper blade. Hold the wiper blade firm ly.
• Remove the wiper blade in the direction of
the arrow.
In sta ll ing th e wiper blade
• Insert the new wiper blade into the mount
on the wiper arm @until you hear it latch
into place.
• Place the wiper arm back on the windshie ld.
• Turn the service pos ition
off.
A WARNING
For safety reasons, the windshield wiper
blades should be replaced once or twice
each year.
(D Note
- The windshield wiper blades must only
be folded away when in the serv ice posi­
tion. Otherw ise, you risk damaging the
paint on the hood or the wi ndshield wip­
er motor.
- You should not drive your veh icle or
press the w indshield w iper lever when
the w iper arms are folded away from the
windsh ield . The w indshield w ipers would
move back into their origina l position
and could damage the hood and wind­
shield.
- To prevent damage to the windshield
washer system, always loosen w iper
blades that have frozen to the wind­
s h ield before turning the wipers on.
- To prevent damage to the wiper blades,
do not apply gasoline, petroleum, thin­
ning agents or other solvents on the wip­
er blades or near them.
- To prevent damage to the wiper arms or
other components, do not try to move
the windshie ld w ipers by hand .

-Commercial hot wax such as t he types
used by car washes make it more d ifficult
to clean t he windshie ld.
- Yo u can also use the service position, for
example, if yo u want to protect the

To he lp you see the curb when backing into a
parking space, the surface of the mirror can
be tilted s light ly. The knob must be in the
P pos ition for this to happen .
You can adjust the t ilted mirror surface by
turning the knob i n the desired d irection.
When you move out of reverse and into anoth­
er gear, the new m irror position is sto red and
ass igned to the key you are using .

Many gasoline grades are blended to perform
especially well for winter or summer driving. During seasonal change-over , we suggest that
you fill up at busy gas stations where the sea­ sonal adjustment is more likely to be made in
time.

- Do not use fuels that fail to meet the
specified criteria in this chapter .
- If you are unable to determine whether
or not a particular fuel blend meets the
specificat ions, ask your service station or
i ts fuel supp lier .
- Do not use fuel for which the contents cannot be identified .
- Fuel system damage and performance
problems resulting from the use of fuels
different from those specified are not
the responsibility of Audi and are not
covered under the New Vehicle or the
Emission Control System Warranties.
- If you experience a loss of fuel economy
or driveability and performance prob­
lems due to the use of one of these fuel
blends, we recommend that you switch
to unblended fuel.
Gasoline additives
A major concern among many auto manufac­
turers is carbon deposit build-up caused by
the type of gasoline you use .
Although gasoline grades differ from one manufacturer to another, they have cer tain
things in common. All gasoline grades contain substances that can cause deposits to collect
on vital engine parts, such as fuel injectors
and intake valves. Although most gasoline
brands include additives to keep engine and
fuel systems clean, they are not equally effec­
tive.

Gasoline . For more information on TOP TIER

After an extended period of using inadequate
fuels, carbon deposit build-ups can rob your engine of peak performance.

Damage or malfunction due to poor fuel
quality is not covered by the Audi New Ve­
hicle Limited Warranty.
Fuel tank
Fuel filler neck
The fuel filler neck is located on the right rear
side panel behind the fuel filler flap.
If the power locking system should fail, you
can still open the flap manually -for detailed
instructions see~
page 213.
You can find the fuel tank capacity of your ve ­
hicle in
~ page 280.
The label on the inside of the fuel filler flap
tells you the correct fuel for your vehicle. For
more information about fuel specifications,
see
~ page 210 .
Your vehicle fuel tank has an on board refuel­
ling vapor recovery system. This feature helps
to prevent fuel vapors from escaping from the
tank and polluting the environment while you refuel your vehicle. In order to fill the tank
properly while protecting the environment,
please follow this refueling procedure careful­
ly .
A WARNING ~
Under normal operating conditions, never
carry additional fuel containers in your car.
Gas canisters and other containers used to
transport fuel can be dangerous. Such con­
tainers, full or empty, may leak and could
cause a fire in a collision . If you must
transport fuel to use for your lawn mower, ..,.

snow blower, etc., be very careful and al­
ways observe local and state laws regard­ ing the use, transportation and storage of
such fuel containers . Make certain the con­
tainer meets industry standards (ANSI/
ASTM F852 -86) .
(D Note
Never drive your vehicle until the fuel tank
is completely empty . The irregular supply
of fuel can cause misfiring. Gasoline could
enter the exhaust system and damage the
catalyt ic converter.

Once the pump nozzle switches off, the fue l
tank is "fu ll". Do not fill the tank more. Other­
wise the expansion space in the tank will be
filled.
The correct fuel type for your vehicle can be
f ound on a label located on the inside of the
fuel filler door. For additional information on
fuel, refer to
c::> page 210 .
The fue l tank capacity of your vehicle is in the
Techni cal D ata c::> page 280.
To avoid fuel spill ing or evaporating from the
fuel tank always close fuel filler cap properly and completely. An improperly closed fuel fi ll­
er cap may also cause the M IL lamp

to come on .
A WARNING
Not paying attention when fueling or han­
d ling fuel incorrect ly can lead to fires, ex­
plosions or serious injuries.
- Fue l ignites easily and can cause serious
burns and other injuries.
- If you do not switch the engine off when
fue ling and/or do not insert the fuel noz­
zle completely into the tank opening ,
fuel can leak out or run over. Leaked fuel can ignite and start a fire .
- Do not use the telephone while fueling.
The electromagnetic rays can cause
sparks, wh ich can ignite fuel vapors and
start a fire.
- Do not sit in your vehicle while fueling . If
you must make an exception and enter
your veh icle again while fueling, close
the door and touch metal to discharge
s tatic electricity before touching the fue l
nozz le . Static electricity can create
sparks, wh ich can ignite vapors when fu-

• Only now plug the mains lead for the charg ­
ing equipment into the wall outlet and turn
iton ¢_& .
• M ake sure the ch arging rate is not o ver
30 amp s / 14. 8 Volt.
• When the battery is fully charged: Turn the
charging equ ipment off and remove the
mains lead from the wa ll outlet .
• Now remove the clamps for the charg ing
equipment.
• Close the red cover on the posit ive po le.
• Close the hood

A discharged batte ry can fr eez e at tempera­
tures of on ly 32 F
0 (0 °C). A llow a frozen bat­
tery to thaw completely before attempting to
charge it¢ .&. . However, we recommend not
using a thawed battery again because the bat­
tery casing can be cracked due to ice forma­
tion and can leak battery acid.

When charging at low voltages (e .g. w ith a
t ric kle char ger ), the battery cables do not
have to be d isconnected first . The battery
caps should
not be opened when charging a
battery.
It is not necessary to remove the battery from
the luggage compartment, and it is also not
necessary to disconnect the cables .

above 14.8 Volt s)
For technical reasons do not use a battery
charger that uses voltage g reate r than
14 .8 Volts to charge your veh icle's battery .
A WARNING
-
Charging a batte ry can be dangerous.
- Always follow the operating instructions
provided by the batte ry charger manu­
facturer when charging your battery.
- Never charge a frozen battery .
It may ex­
plode because of gas t rapped in the ice.
Allow a frozen batte ry to thaw o ut first.
- Do not reuse batteries which were fro­
zen. The batte ry housing may have cracked and weakened when the battery
froze.
- Charge the battery in a well ventilated
area. Keep away from open flame or elec­
tr ical spark. Do not smoke. Hydrogen gas
generated by the battery is explos ive.
- To reduce the danger of explosion, never connect or d isconnect charger cables
while the charger is operat ing .
- Fast charging a battery is dangerous and
should only be attempted by a compe­
tent techn ic ian with the proper equip­
ment.
- Battery acid that may sp ill dur ing charg­
i n g should be washed off with a solut ion
of warm water and baking soda to neu­
tralize the ac id.
(D Note
Never use a fast charger as a booster to
start the eng ine . Th is w ill seriously dam­
age sens it ive e lectronic components, such
as contro l units, re lays, radio, etc., as well
as the battery charger.
Battery replacement
The new battery must have the same specifi­
cations and dimensions as the original equip­
ment battery.
Intelligent energy management in your vehi­
cle is responsible for distributing the elect ri­
ca l ene rgy th rougho ut yo ur vehicle
¢page 193. The intelligent energy manage­
ment system will keep the engine battery
charged better than vehicles without this sys­
tem. To make sure the additional electrical en­
ergy is ava ilable once again after you have
changed the battery, we recommend that you
install batteries of the same type and manu ­
facture only (the same as those installed at
the time your veh icle was de livered) . Specifi­
cations are listed on the batte ry housing. Your
a utho rized deale r must code the batte ry in
the energy management system to enab le you
to use the energy management functions cor -
rect ly after replacing the battery.

General notes
Tires may be the least appreci­
ated and most abused parts of
a motor vehicle.
Ti res may be the least appreci­
ated and most abused parts of
a motor vehicle. Tires are, how­
ever, one of the most important
parts of a vehicle, particularly
considering the comparatively
small patch of r ubber on each
tire that assures that all-impor­
tant contact between you, your
vehicle and the road.
Maintaining the co rrect tire
p ressure, making sure that your
vehicle and its tires do not have
to carry more we ight than they
can safe ly handle, avoiding
damage from road hazards and
regularly inspecting tires for
damage including cuts, s lashes
irregular wear and overall con ­
d ition are the most important
things that you can do to help
avoid sudden tire failure inc lud­
ing tread separation and blow­
outs.
Avoiding damage
If you have to drive over a curb
or similar obstacle, drive very
slowly and as close as possible
at a right angle to the curb.
Always keep chemicals includ­
ing grease, oil, gasoline and
brake fluid off the tires.
Inspect the tires regularly for
damage (cuts, cracks or blis­
ters, etc.). Remove any foreign
bodies embedded in the treads.
Storing tires
Mark tires when you remove
them to indicate the direction
of rotation. This ensures you to be able to mount them correct ­
ly when you reinstall them.
When removed, the wheels or
tires should be stored in a cool,
dry and preferably dark p lace.
Store tires in a vertical position if they are not mounted on
rims, in a horizontal position if
they are mounted on rims.
