Removing the wiper blade
• Fold the windshield wiper arm away from
the windshie ld .
• Press the locking knob@¢

wiper blade. Hold the wiper blade firm ly.
• Remove the wiper blade in the direction of
the arrow.
In sta ll ing th e wiper blade
• Insert the new wiper blade into the mount
on the wiper arm @until you hear it latch
into place.
• Place the wiper arm back on the windshie ld.
• Turn the service pos ition
off.
A WARNING
For safety reasons, the windshield wiper
blades should be replaced once or twice
each year.
(D Note
- The windshield wiper blades must only
be folded away when in the serv ice posi­
tion. Otherw ise, you risk damaging the
paint on the hood or the wi ndshield wip­
er motor.
- You should not drive your veh icle or
press the w indshield w iper lever when
the w iper arms are folded away from the
windsh ield . The w indshield w ipers would
move back into their origina l position
and could damage the hood and wind­
shield.
- To prevent damage to the windshield
washer system, always loosen w iper
blades that have frozen to the wind­
s h ield before turning the wipers on.
- To prevent damage to the wiper blades,
do not apply gasoline, petroleum, thin­
ning agents or other solvents on the wip­
er blades or near them.
- To prevent damage to the wiper arms or
other components, do not try to move
the windshie ld w ipers by hand .

-Commercial hot wax such as t he types
used by car washes make it more d ifficult
to clean t he windshie ld.

Front passeng er's exterior mirror tilt

To he lp you see the curb when backing into a
parking space, the surface of the mirror can
be tilted s light ly. The knob must be in the
P pos ition for this to happen .
You can adjust the t ilted mirror surface by
turning the knob i n the desired d irection.
When you move out of reverse and into anoth­
er gear, the new m irror position is sto red and
ass igned to the key you are using .

Folding mirr ors in and out
To fold the mirrors in w ith the knob, turn the

You can set in the MMI if the mirrors shou ld
fold in when locking the vehicle or not

mirrors fold in . When you sta rt the ignit ion,
the m irrors fold out .
A WARNING
Curved mirror s urfaces (convex or asphe­
ric*) enlarge the field of vision. However,
they make objects in the mirror appear sma ller and farther away . Your may esti­
mate incorrectly when you use these m ir­
rors to gauge your d istance from the
veh icles behind you when changing lanes -
accident risk!
@ Note
- For vehicles with power folding exterior
mirrors*: If the m irror housing was
moved by outside forces (such as an im­
pact when maneuvering), you must use
the power folding function to fold the mirro r all the way out. You will hear a
l oud noise when the m irrors are latched
back in place. The mir ror housi ng must
not be moved back into place by hand
because this would affect the mirror
mechan ism.
- Applies to vehicles witho ut power fold­
i ng exter ior mirrors: If the mirror hous­
ing was moved by outside forces (suc h as
in impact during maneuvering), you
must move the m irror housing back into
place by hand.
- If you wash the vehicle in an automatic
car wash, yo u m ust fold the e xterior m ir­
r o rs in to reduce the risk of damage to
the m irrors. Never fold power fo ld ing ex-

terior mirrors by hand . On ly fold them in
and out using the power controls.
(D Tips
If t he power ad justmen t fails, bot h mir­
ro rs can be adjusted by hand by pressing
on the edge of the mirror surface.
Dimming the mirrors
Your vehicle is equipp ed with a manual or au­

-If electrolyte fluid enters the eyes, f lush
them thoroughly with a large amount of
clean water for at least 15 minutes and
then seek medical attention .
- If electrolyte fluid comes into contact
with the skin, flush the affected area

seek medical attention. Clean affected cl othing and shoes tho roughly before

- If the fluid was swallowed and the per ­

ror breaks, electroly te can leak o ut. This
liquid damages plastic surfaces . Clean this

- If the light reaching the rearv iew mirror
i s obstructed, the automatic dimming
mirror will not function correctly,
- The automatic dimming mirro rs do not
dim when the interior lighting is turned
on or the reverse gear is selected.

check the compass while dr iving, you
must still pay attention to traff ic, the
road, the weather and any other possible

Important information
A WARNING

information, tips, suggestions and warn­
ings that you should read and follow for
your own safety and the safety of your pas­ sengers.
The safety belts and the airbag system con
only provide maximum protection if the front
seats ore correctly adjusted.
There are various ways of adjusting the front
seats to provide safe and comfortable support
for the driver and the front passenger. Adjust
your seat properly so that :
- you can easily and quick ly reach all the
switches and controls in the instrument
panel
- your body is properly supported thus reduc­
ing physical stress and fatigue
- the safety be lts and airbag system can offer
maximum protection
¢ page 146.
In the following sections, you will see exactly
how you can best adjust your seats .
There are special regulations and instructions
for installing a child seat on the front pas­
senger's seat. Always follow the information
regarding chi ld safety provided in
¢ page 169, Child Safety.
A WARNING
Incorrect seating position of the driver and
all other passengers can result in serious
personal injury.
- Always keep your feet on the floor when
the vehicle is in motion -never put your
feet on top of the instrument panel, out
of the window or on top of the seat cush­ ion. This applies especially to the passen-

gers. If your seating position is incorrect,
you increase the risk of injury in the case
of sudden braking or an accident. If the
airbag inflates and the seating position is incorrect, this could result in pe rsonal
injury or even death.
- It is important for both the driver and
front passenger to keep a distance of at
least 10 inches (25 cm) between them­
selves and the steering wheel and/or in­
strument panel. If you're sitting any
closer than this, the airbag system can­
not protect you properly. In addition, the
front seats and head restraints must be
adjusted to your body height so that they
can give you maximum protect ion.
- Always try to keep as much distance as
possible between yourself and the steer­
ing wheel or instrument panel.
- Do not adjust the driver's or front pas­
senger's seat whi le the vehicle is moving.
Your seat may move unexpectedly, caus­
ing sudden loss of veh icle control and
personal injury. If you adjust your seat
while the veh icle is moving, you are out
of posit ion.
Driver's seat
The correct seat position is important for safe
and relaxed driving .
We recommend that you adjust the dr iver's
seat in the follow ing manner:
"" Adjust the seat in fore and aft direction so
that you can easily push the pedals to the
floor wh ile keeping your knees slightly bent

"" Adjust the backrest so that when you sit
w ith your back against the backrest, you can
still hold the top of the steering wheel.
""For adjustab le head restra ints: adjust the
head restraint so the uppe r edge is as even
as possible with the top of your head. If that
is not possible , try to adjust the head re­
straint so that it is as close to this position ..,_

Due to the laws of p hys ics, even small objects
that are loose in the vehicle can become heavy
projectiles and cause serious i njuries dur ing a
collis ion. Objects in the vehicle increase in ki­
n etic energy, which varies depending on the
ve hicle and the weight of the object. The vehi­
cle speed is the most important factor in th is.
E xample : In a frontal impact at a speed of
30 mph (48 km/h), the weight of a 10- lb (5-
kg) object increases to app roximately
20
times its normal weight d ue to the forces act­
ing upon it. This means the weight of the ob- ject is suddenly equivalent to approximately
200 lb (90 kg). It is easy to imagine the type
of injuries an object of that weight could
cause if it slides through the passenger com­
partment unrestrained during a collision at a
relat ively low speed.
_&. WARNING
-
Weak, damaged or faulty straps used to
secure objects to the tie-downs can fail
d uring heavy bra king or a collis ion and
l ead to se rious in juries.
- Always use su itable straps and secure
objects to the tie-downs in t he luggage
compartment to preven t objects from
shifting and sliding forward .
- Never secure a child seat restraint to a
tie -down .
- Because of thei r load capacity, the hooks
should only be used to secure objects
that weig h a maximum of 10 lb (5 kg).
Heavy objects will not be secured suff i­
ciently, and t his increases the risk of in­
jury.

atu re so that it is only a few degrees be low

The cooling mode only f unct ions w ith the
b lower turned on . The a ir is not cooled and
h umidity is not removed when cooling mode

dows. The cooling mode sw itches off auto­
matica lly in co ld outside temperatures (below
32 °F/0°C) .

The automatic climate control system auto­
matica lly ma inta ins a temperature once it has
been set. The temperature of the air from the
vents, the b lower speed, and air distribution
are also automat ically adju sted . In all heat ing
mode funct ions except
defrost, the blower
only switches to a h igher speed once the en­
g ine coolant has reached a certa in tempera­
ture . Recirculation mode is switched off in the de­
frost setting ~-
.&_ WARNING
-You shou ld not use the recirculation mode
for an extended period s ince no fresh air is
drawn in. With the air-conditioning*
switched off, the w indows can fog up,
which increases the risk of an acc ident .
IA/ Cl Switching th e cooling mode on and
off
T he cooling system is turned on and off with
the
IA/C l button. The air is not coo led and hu­
mid ity is not removed when cooling mode is
switched off . This can cause fog on the win­
dows . The cooli ng mode switches off auto ­
matically i n cold outside temperatu res (be low
32 °F / 0 °() .
IAUTOI Switch ing automatic mode on and
off
The automatic mode is turned on using the
IAUTOI button . AUTO mode switches off once
a b utton in the climate control system is
pressed. Automatic mode maintains a con­
sta nt temperature ins ide the ve hicle . Air tem­
perature, airflow and air d istribution are con­
trolled automatically . When automatic mode
is active, pressing the
IAU TO I button briefly IJJ,-
