WARNING
If your vehicle has become flood-damaged in any way (e.g., soaked carpeting/stand-ing water on the floor of the vehicle), donot attempt to start the vehicle or insertthe remote key into the ignition slot beforedisconnecting the battery (see below). Thismay cause airbag deployment which couldresult in serious injury. Have the vehicletowed to a trained and qualified Volvoservice technician for repairs. Before attempting to tow the vehicle:
1. Switch off the ignition for at least10 minutes and disconnect the bat- tery.
2. Follow the instructions for manually overriding the shiftlock system onpage 128.
Front airbags

The front airbag systemThe front airbags supplement the three-point seat belts. For these airbags to provide theprotection intended, seat belts must be wornat all times. The front airbag system includes gas genera- tors surrounded by the airbags, and decelera-tion sensors that activate the gas generators,causing the airbags to be inflated with nitro-gen gas.
Location of the passenger's side front airbag
As the movement of the seats' occupants compresses the airbags, some of the gas isexpelled at a controlled rate to provide bettercushioning. Both seat belt pretensioners alsodeploy, minimizing seat belt slack. The entireprocess, including inflation and deflation ofthe airbags, takes approximately one fifth of asecond. The location of the front airbags is indicated by SRS AIRBAG embossed on the steering
wheel pad and above the glove compartment,and by decals on both sun visors and on thefront and far right side of the dash. The driver's side front airbag is folded and located in the steering wheel hub.

WARNING
•
The airbags in the vehicle are designed to be a SUPPLEMENT to–not areplacement for–the three-point seatbelts. For maximum protection, wearseat belts at all times. Be aware thatno system can prevent all possibleinjuries that may occur in an accident.
• Never drive with your hands on thesteering wheel pad/airbag housing.
• The front airbags are designed to helpprevent serious injury. Deploymentoccurs very quickly and with consider-able force. During normal deploymentand depending on variables such asseating position, one may experienceabrasions, bruises, swellings, or otherinjuries as a result from deployment ofone or both of the airbags.
• When installing any accessory equip-ment, make sure that the front airbagsystem is not damaged. Any interfer-ence in the system could cause mal-function.
Front airbag deployment
•
The front airbags are designed to deploy during certain frontal or front-angular col-lisions, impacts, or decelerations,depending on the crash severity, angle,speed and object impacted. The airbagsmay also deploy in certain non-frontalcollisions where rapid decelerationoccurs.
• The SRS sensors, which trigger the frontairbags, are designed to react to both theimpact of the collision and the inertialforces generated by it, and to determine ifthe intensity of the collision is sufficientfor the seat belt pretensioners and/or air-bags to be deployed.
However, not all frontal collisions activate the front airbags.
• If the collision involves a nonrigid object (e.g., a snow drift or bush), or a rigid,fixed object at a low speed, the front air-bags will not necessarily deploy.
• Front airbags do not normally deploy in aside impact collision, in a collision fromthe rear or in a rollover situation.
• The amount of damage to the bodyworkdoes not reliably indicate if the airbagsshould have deployed or not.WARNING
•Do not use child safety seats or child booster cushions/backrests in thefront passenger's seat. We also rec-ommend that occupants under 4 feet7 inches (140 cm) in height who haveoutgrown these devices sit in the rear seat with the seat belt fastened 1
.
• Never drive with the airbags deployed. The fact that they hang out can impairthe steering of your vehicle. Othersafety systems can also be damaged.
• The smoke and dust formed when theairbags are deployed can cause skinand eye irritation in the event of pro-longed exposure.

WARNING
•Boxes, suitcases, etc. wedged behind the front seats could impede the func-tion of the WHIPS system.
• If the rear seat backrests are foldeddown, cargo must be secured to pre-vent it from sliding forward against thefront seat backrests in the event of acollision from the rear. This couldinterfere with the action of the WHIPSsystem.
WARNING
Any contact between the front seat back- rests and the folded rear seat or a rear-facing child seat could impede the functionof the WHIPS system. If the rear seat isfolded down, the occupied front seatsmust be adjusted forward so that they donot touch the folded rear seat.

Front seats
Lumbar support: turn the control for firmer or softer lumbar support.
Front-rear adjustment: lift the bar and move the seat to the position of yourchoice.
Raise/lower front edge of seat cushion, pump up/down.
Backrest tilt: turn the control to adjust the angle of the backrest.
Raise/lower the seat, pump up/down.
Control panel for power seat*.
WARNING
• Do not adjust the seat while driving. The seat should be adjusted so thatthe brake pedal can be depressedfully. In addition, position the seat asfar rearward as comfort and controlallow.
• Check that the seat is securely lockedinto position after adjusting.
Folding the front seat backrest*
The front passenger seat backrest can be folded to a horizontal position to make roomfor a long load. Fold the backrest as follows:
Move the seat as far back and down as possible.
Adjust the backrest to an upright position.
Lift the catches on the rear of the back- rest.
Without releasing the catches, push the backrest forward. Move the seat as far forward as possible so that the head restraint slides under theglove compartment.
WARNING
• When transporting long objects, cover sharp edges on the load to help pre-vent injury to occupants. Secure theload to help prevent shifting duringsudden stops.
• When the seat's backrest is returnedto the upright position, push and pull itto be sure that it is securely locked inthis position.

WARNING
The center rear seat head restraint should only be in its lowest position when thisseat is NOT occupied. When the centerposition is occupied, the head restraintshould be correctly adjusted to the pas-senger’s height. The upper edge of thehead restraint should be at least on a levelwith the upper-most point of the seatoccupant's ear.
Manually folding down the rear seat's outboard head restraints
•Pull the handle closest to the head restraint to fold it down.
• To return the head restraint to the uprightposition, push it up until it clicks intoplace.
NOTE
•The head restraint must be returned to the upright position manually.
• The outboard head restraints cannotbe folded down on models that are notequipped with this button.
CAUTION
The rear head restraints should not be kept folded down for prolonged periods.This could result in pressure marks inleather upholstery.
WARNING
For safety reasons, no one should be allowed to sit in the outboard rear seatpositions if the head restraints are foldeddown. If these positions are occupied, thehead restraints should be in the upright(fixed) position.
Automatically folding down the rear seat’s outboard head restraints
1. The ignition must be in mode
II.
2. Press the button to lower the rear head restraints for improved visibility.
NOTE
•The head restraint must be returned to the upright position manually.
• The outboard head restraints cannotbe folded down on models that are notequipped with this button.

WARNING
For safety reasons, no one should be allowed to sit in the outboard rear seatpositions if the head restraints are foldeddown. If these positions are occupied, thehead restraints should be in the upright(fixed) position.
Folding down the rear seat backrestsThe three sections of the rear seat backrest can be folded down in different combinationsto make it easier to transport long objects.
• The left (driver's side) section can be folded down separately.
• The center section can be folded downseparately.
• The right (passenger's side) section canonly be folded down together with thecenter section.
• All three sections can be folded downtogether.
CAUTION
To help avoid damage to the upholstery, there should be no objects on the rear seatand the seat belt should not be buckledwhen the backrest is folded down.

Release and lower the center head restraint (see page 91) if the center and/orright section of the backrest is to be low- ered. The outboard head restraints folddown automatically.
Pull up the backrest release control on the respective section(s) (
) and fold the
section(s) down. A red indicator (
)
shows that the backrest is not locked in the upright position.
NOTE
It may be necessary to move the front seats forward or put their backrests in amore upright position before folding downthe rear seat backrests.

Connecting external devices
Sockets for auxiliary devices in the storage com- partment between the front seatsAn auxiliary device, such as an iPod ®
or MP3
player can be connected to the infotainment system via one of the sockets in the centerconsole storage compartment. A device con-nected to the USB socket can be operatedusing the vehicle's infotainment system con-trols. There is a notch at the right rear of the center console for routing wires to external devices.This notch helps prevent the wires from beingpinched when the cover is closed. An iPod ®
or an MP3 player with rechargeable
batteries will also be charged if the device is connected to the USB socket (if the vehicle's ignition is on or if the engine is running). To connect a device:
1. Press
MEDIA and turn TUNE to select
the desired source (
iPod, USB or AUX).
Press OK/MENU .
> For example, if a USB device has been selected, the text

2. Connect the device to one of the sockets in the center console storage compart- ment (see the illustration).

Reading USB will be displayed
while the system reads the device's folders. This may take a short time, depending on thefolder structure and the number of files. When this information has been loaded, track information will be displayed and a track canbe selected.
NOTE
• The system supports a number of iPod ®
models produced in 2005 or
later.
• In order to help avoid damage to the USB socket, it will be switched off ifthere is a short circuit or if the con-nected device uses too much current(which can happen if the device doesnot comply with the USB standard).The USB socket will reactivate thenext time the ignition is switched on ifthe problem no longer exists. If theproblem persists, contact a trainedand authorized Volvo service techni-cian.
Media menu selections can be made from the center console or the steering wheel keypad,see page 231 for more information.

Two cassettes containing nylon cargo nets are stored in a compartment under the cargoarea floor.
Attaching the cassette(s)
The two-sections of the net are attached to the rear side of the rear seat backrest. Thecassettes have different widths, and the wid-est section should be mounted on the rightside (seen from the rear of the vehicle).
1. Fold down the rear seat backrests.
2. Align the cassette’s mounting rail above
the mounting brackets on the backrest
.
3. Slide the cassette onto the mounting brackets
. 4. Return the backrest to the upright posi-
tion.
Using the net(s)

With the backrests uprightThe net is pulled up from the cassette and locks in position after approximately 1minute.
Pull up the right side of the net by grasp- ing its strap.
Insert the net’s rod in the retaining bracket on the right side near the ceilingand press it forward. It will click intoplace.
Extend the left section of the rod and insert it in the bracket on the left side of the cargo compartment. Press it forwarduntil it clicks into place.
Pull up the left side of the cargo net and secure it on the rod.
NOTE
•
The net can be fastened in the same way if the rear seat backrests arefolded down. In this case, use theretaining brackets near the ceiling,above the front seats.
• The front passenger's seat backrestcan also be folded down for carryinglong objects, see page 88.
Removing the cargo net cassettes1. Retract the net(s) in the reverse order.
2. Fold the entire rear seat backrest down.
3. Slide the cassettes outward until they
release from the mounting brackets.
WARNING
•When not in use, return the cassettes to their storage compartment underthe cargo area floor.
• Objects in the cargo area should besecurely anchored, even if the cargonet is correctly installed and in use.
