If the engine will not start
If the engine still does not start after following the correct starting
procedure (P. 200, 205) or releasing the steering lock (P. 203,
207), confirm the following points.
The engine will not start even if you are carrying the correct
key
One of the following may be the cause of the problem.
There may not be sufficient fuel in the vehicle’s tank.
Gasoline engine: Refuel the vehicle.
Diesel engine: (P. 718)
The engine may be flooded. (gasoline engine)
Try to restart the engine once more following correct starting
procedures. (P. 200, 205)
There may be a malfunction in the engine immobilizer system.
(P. 127)
The starter motor turns over slowly, the personal/interior
lights and headlights are dim, or the horn does not sound or
sounds at a low volume
One of the following may be the cause of the problem.
The battery may be discharged. (P. 709)
The battery terminal connections may be loose or corroded.

If you lose your keys
New genuine Toyota keys can be made by any authorized Toyota
dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped profes-
sional. For vehicles with smart entry & start system, bring the other
keys and the key number stamped on your key number plate. For
vehicles without smart entry & start system, bring a master key and
the key number stamped on the key number plate.

If the electronic key does not operate properly
Locking and unlocking the doors and key linked functions
Locks all doors
Unlocks all doors
An alarm will sound if the alarm is
set. (P. 138)
For vehicles with smart entry & start system: If communication
between the electronic key and vehicle is interrupted (P. 44) or the
electronic key cannot be used because the battery is depleted, the
smart entry & start system and wireless remote control cannot be
used. In such cases, the doors can be opened or the engine can be
started by following the procedure below.

Starting the engine
Vehicles with a Multidrive or automatic transmission: Shift the
shift lever to “P” and apply the brakes.
Vehicles with a manual transmission: Shift the shift lever to
“N” and depress the clutch pedal.
Touch the Toyota emblem side of
the electronic key to the
“ENGINE START STOP” switch.
An alarm will sound to indicate
that the start function cannot
detect the electronic key that is
touched to the “ENGINE START
STOP” switch if any of the doors
is opened while the key is
touched to the switch.
Press the “ENGINE START STOP” switch within 10 seconds
after the buzzer sounds, keeping the brake pedal (Multidrive
or automatic transmission) or clutch pedal (manual transmis-
sion) depressed.
In the event that the “ENGINE START STOP” switch still cannot be
operated, contact any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another
duly qualified and equipped professional.

Stopping the engine
Shift the shift lever to “P” (Multidrive or automatic transmission) or “N” (man-
ual transmission) and press the “ENGINE START STOP” switch as you nor-
mally do when stopping the engine.
Replacing the key battery
As this procedure is a temporary measure, it is recommended that the elec-
tronic key battery be replaced immediately when the battery depletes.

Alarm
Using the mechanical key to lock the doors will not set the alarm system.
If a door is unlocked using the mechanical key when the alarm system is set,
the alarm may be triggered. (P. 138)
Changing “ENGINE START STOP” switch modes
Automatic transmission
Within 10 seconds of the buzzer sounding, release the brake pedal and
press the “ENGINE START STOP” switch.
The engine does not start and modes will be changed each time the
switch is pressed. (P. 202)
Manual transmission
Within 10 seconds of the buzzer sounding, release the clutch pedal and
press the “ENGINE START STOP” switch.

Starting the engine when the battery is discharged (vehicles with a
Multidrive or automatic transmission)
The engine cannot be started by push-starting.
Avoiding a discharged battery
Turn off the headlights and the audio system while the engine is turned
off.
Turn off any unnecessary electrical components when the vehicle is run-
ning at a low speed for an extended period, such as in heavy traffic, etc.
Charging the battery
The electricity stored in the battery will discharge gradually even when the
vehicle is not in use, due to natural discharge and the draining effects of cer-
tain electrical appliances. If the vehicle is left for a long time, the battery may
discharge, and the engine may be unable to start. (The battery recharges
automatically during driving.)
When the battery is removed or discharged
Make sure that the key is not inside the vehicle when recharging or replacing
the battery. The key may be locked in the vehicle if the alarm is activated.

CAUTION
Avoiding battery fires or explosions
Observe the following precautions to prevent accidentally igniting the flam-
mable gas that may be emitted from the battery.
Make sure the jumper cable is connected to the correct terminal and that it
is not unintentionally in contact with any part other than the intended termi-
nal.
Do not allow the jumper cables to come into contact with the “+” and “-” ter-
minals.
Do not allow open flame or use matches, cigarette lighters or smoke near
the battery.

CAUTION
If the engine has to be turned off while driving
Power assist for the brakes and steering wheel will be lost, making the
brake pedal harder to depress and the steering wheel heavier to turn.
Decelerate as much as possible before turning off the engine.
Vehicles without smart entry & start system: Never attempt to remove the
key, as doing so will lock the steering wheel.
Vehicles without smart entry &
start system: Stop the engine
by turning the engine switch to
the “ACC” position.
