182 Driving and Driving Safety
Combined operation of PSM and PTV Plus
In order to ensure optimum stabilization of the vehicle, the center differential lock is influenced when PSM interventions occur on vehicles with PTV Plus.
Combined operation of PSM and PTM
In order to ensure optimum stabilization of the vehicle, torque distribution between the front and rear wheels is adapted and the differential lock is influenced when PSM interventions occur on vehicles with PTV Plus.
In the event of a PTM fault, PSM cannot be switched off.If PSM is switched off, it is switched on again automatically.
Automatic brake differential (ABD)
The ABD system controls the front and rear axles separately. If one wheel of an axle starts to spin, it is braked so that the other wheel on the same axle can be driven.
ABD recognizes different driving states, and it features control strategies adapted to these states. In situations in which little propulsive power is required, such as when the vehicle moves off on a level gravel surface, traction control already becomes active at low engine speeds. If a large amount of propulsive power is required, e.g. when driving off on an uphill slope or for rapid acceleration, the ABD system is adapted accordingly.
Anti-slip control (ASR)
The anti-slip control system prevents the wheels from spinning by adjusting the engine power, thereby ensuring good lane-holding ability and stable handling.
Engine drag torque control (MSR)
In conditions of excessive slip, the engine drag torque control system prevents all driven wheels from locking up when the vehicle is overrunning. This is also the case for downshifts on a slippery road.
Steering torque pulse
The steering torque pulse provides the driver with steering assistance when braking on road surfaces with differing friction values.Additional steering forces also assist the driver during counter steering.
Switching off PSM
fPress button for at least 1 second.PSM is switched off after a short delay. The indicator light on the button and the PSM OFF warning light on the instrument panel light up.The warning “ PSM off” appears on the multi-function display in the instrument panel.
When you brake in the ABS control range , the vehicle is stabilized even when PSM is switched off.
One-sided spinning of the wheels is prevented, even with PSM switched off.

Driving and Driving Safety 187
This has the following advantages: – Improved traction.– Reduced load change responses when cornering at speed.– Improved driving stability at higher speeds.
PTV Plus changes to a more dynamic map when “ Sport Plus” is switched on.
Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control
(PDCC)
In spite of the advantages of PDCC, it is still the driver’s responsibility to adapt his driving style and maneuvers in line with road and weather conditions, as well as the traffic situation.
The increased safety that is provided should not induce you to take greater risks with your safety. The limits set by the physics of driving cannot be overcome, even with PDCC.Risk of accidents due to inappropriate speed cannot be reduced by PDCC and PTV Plus.
Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) is a system for roll stabilization of the vehicle body when driving.Driving comfort and driving safety are improved by active intervention of the anti-roll bars on the front and rear axles. Vehicle balance and agility are optimized.
No separate controls are available for the PDCC system. When you select a chassis setup in Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) the PDCC system automatically activates the corresponding on-road driving program.
For information on selecting a chassis setup:fPlease see the chapter “PORSCHE ACTIVE SUSPENSION MANAGEMENT (PASM)” on page 185.
Warning message
The warning message “ Fault of the PDCC
stabiliser ” appears on the multi-function display in the instrument panel if there is a system fault.
For information on warning messages on the multi-function display:fPlease see the chapter “OVERVIEW OF WARNING AND INFORMATION MESSAGES” on page 129.fAdapt your driving style according to the changed conditions.fContact an authorized Porsche dealer.
Checking hydraulic fluid
The hydraulic fluid is checked and changed regularly as part of servicing.
For information on maintenance:fPlease see the chapter “OVERVIEW OF WARNING AND INFORMATION MESSAGES” on page 129.
Loss of control over the vehicleWARNINGh

Minor Repairs 245
Driving with damaged tires could cause you to lose control of the vehicle.fIf while driving, your vehicle experiences a sudden vibration or ride disturbance, and/or you suspect that possible damage to your tires or vehicle has occurred, you should immediately reduce your speed without excessive use of the brakes.fStop the vehicle as soon as possible, and inspect the tires. If you cannot determine the cause for the disturbance, have your vehicle towed to the nearest Porsche or tire dealer to have your vehicle or tire(s) inspected.fContinuing to operate the vehicle without correction could result in a loss of control.Example
Uniform Tire Quality Grading
Quality grades can be found where applicable on the tire sidewall between tread shoulder and maximum section width.
All passenger car tires must conform to Federal Safety Requirements in addition to these grades.
Treadwear
The treadwear grade is a comparative rating based on the wear rate of the tire when tested under controlled conditions on a specific government test course. For example, a tire graded 150 would wear one and a half (1-1/2) times as well on the government course as a tire graded 100. The relative performance of tires depends upon the actual conditions of their use, however, and may depart significantly from the norm due to variations in driving habits, service practices and differences in road characteristics and climate.
Traction AA, A, B, C
The traction grades, from highest to lowest, are AA, A, B, and C and they represent the tire's ability to stop on wet pavement as measured under controlled conditions on specified government test surfaces of asphalt and concrete. A tire marked C may have poor traction performance.
Information
The traction grade assigned to this is based on braking (straight-ahead) traction tests and does not include cornering (turned) traction, acceleration, hydroplaning or peak traction characteristics.
Temperature A, B, C
The temperature grades are A (the highest), B and C, representing the tire's resistance to the generation of heat and its ability to dissipate heat when tested under controlled conditions on a specified indoor laboratory test wheel.Sustained high temperatures can cause the material of the tire to degenerate and reduce tire life, and excessive temperature can lead to sudden tire failure. The grade C corresponds to a level of performance which all passenger car tires must meet under the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 109.Grades B and A represent higher levels of performance on the laboratory test wheel than the minimum required by law.

Minor Repairs 247
Risk of damage to the vehicle and to the tires.
Damage due to overloading is not covered by the vehicle warranty.
Tire damage may also be caused by overloading, and this damage is not covered by your tire warranty.fDo not overload your vehicle. Be careful about the roof load. fIf you plan to load the vehicle, first correct the tire pressure. Tire pressure for loaded vehicle can be found on the tire pressure plate and in the chapter technical data.fNever exceed the specified axle load.
fPlease see the chapter “LOADING INFORMATION” on page 204.
NOTICE
Example of a tire pressure plate
Tire Pressure plate
Information on the tire pressure plate
A Seating capacity
Maximum number of vehicle occupants, including the driver.B Vehicle load limit
Is the maximum total weight limit specified of the load (passengers and cargo) for the vehicle. This is the maximum weight of passengers and cargo that can be loaded into the vehicle. Please see the chapter “LOADING INFORMATION” on page 204.
C Original tire size
Size of tires mounted at the factory. D Recommended cold tire inflation pressure
These values are for cold tires (68 °F/20 °C).
Tire traction
When driving on wet or slushy roads, a wedge of water may build up between the tires and the road. This phenomenon is known as “hydroplane” and may cause partial or complete loss of traction, vehicle control or stopping ability.fReduce speed on wet surfaces.
HydroplaningWARNINGh

Minor Repairs 251
The standard tires profile and rubber mixture are optimized for wet and dry driving conditions, and may not prove favorable for snow conditions.fInstall snow tires before driving in such conditions.
Risk of insufficient road grip leading to loss of control and damage to the vehicle.
The standard tires profile and rubber mixture are optimized for wet and dry driving conditions, and may not prove favorable for snow conditions.fInstall snow tires before driving in such conditions.
Before mounting snow tires, consult with your Porsche dealer. They have the technical information necessary to advise you on wheel and tire compatibility.fSnow tires should have the same load capacity as original equipment tires and should be mounted on all four wheels.
Driving the vehicle with low tire pressure increases risk of a tire failure and resulting loss of control. Furthermore, low tire pressure increases the rate of wear of the affected tires and causes damage.
Tires with badly worn treads are very dangerous and could cause accidents.fMake sure they are replaced immediately.fDo not exceed the snow tire speed rating.
Snow tires do not have the same degree of traction on dry, wet or snowfree roads as normal tires. Furthermore, snow tires wear rapidly under these conditions.
Information
We recommend that you fit snow tires on the vehicle at temperatures below 45 °F (7 °C) since the driving performance of summer tires is reduced at low temperatures and a lower level of comfort can also be expected. For example, juddering noises caused by the tires can occur while maneuvering the vehicle or accelerating out of bends on both dry and wet road surfaces.Extremely low temperatures of below 5 °F (-15 °C) can cause permanent damage to summer tires.
Snow tires lose their suitability when their tread depth falls below 5/32 in. (4 mm).
Comply with all state and local laws governing snow tire and tread depth requirements.
Exceeding the maximum permitted speed for the tires fitted could cause tire failure.fAlways check the maximum speed rating on the tire sidewall on any tire on the vehicle.fNever exceed the maximum speed rating of the tires.
Wheel change
fWhen wheels are removed, mark the direction of rotation and position of each wheel.Example: FR (front right), FL, RR and RL.fAlways fit the wheels in accordance with the markings.
Snow chains
Risk of damage to body, axle or brake components.fFit snow chains only to the rear wheels, and only with the tire/rim combination listed in the Technical Data.fUse only the fine-link snow chains recommended and authorized by Porsche so that sufficient clearance between the wheel well and the chain is assured.fPlease see the chapter “WHEELS, TIRES” on page 286.fFollow instructions issued by the supplier of the chains.
