The windshield wiper and washer can be operated with the ignition switch in the “ON” or “ACC” position.If the blades are frozen to the windshield, do not operate the wipers until the ice has melted and the blades are freed, otherwise the wipermotor may be damaged.
With the lever in the “INT” (speed sensitive intermittent operation) position, the intermit- tent intervals can be adjusted by turning theknob (A).
NOTE
 If the headlights are switched to high beam, the front fog lights will go
out; they will illu-
minate again when the headlights are switched back to low beam.  If the light switch is rotated to the “OFF” or “ ” position while the front fog lights are illuminated, they will automatically turn off. They can be turned back on again by rotating the light switch back to “ ” position, and turning the knob in the direction of the “ON”position.  Do not use fog lights except in conditions of fog, otherwise excessive light glare may temporarily blind oncoming vehicle drivers.

CAUTION If the washer is used in cold weather, the washer fluid sprayed against the glass may freeze, which may hinder visibility. Warm the glass with the defroster before using thewasher.

NOTE
 To ensure a clear rearward view, the rear window wiper will automatically perform several continuous operations if the gearshift lever or the selector lever is put in the “R”position while the windshield wipers are operating. Refer to “Rear window wiper and washer”on page 5-156.

The misting function can be used when the ignition switch is in the “ON or “ACC” posi- tion.The wipers will operate once if the wiper lever is raised to the “MIST” position and released. This operation is useful when it isdrizzling, etc. The wipers will continue to operate while the lever is held in the “MIST” position.

Wiper operation under these conditions can scratch the windshield and damage the wip- ers.
With the lever in the “AUTO” (rain sensor) position, it is possible to adjust the sensitivityof the rain sensor by turning the knob (B).
CAUTION With the ignition switch in the “ON” posi- tion and the lever in the “AUTO” position, the wipers may automatically operate in the situations described below.• When cleaning the outside surface of thewindshield, if you touch the rain sensor.• When cleaning the outside surface of thewindshield, if you wipe with a cloth the rainsensor.• When using an automatic car wash.• A physical shock is applied to the wind-shield.• A physical shock is applied to the rain sen-sor.
If your hands get trapped, you could suffer injuries or the wipers could malfunction. To deactivate the rain sensor, place the lever in the “OFF” position.NOTE
 To protect the rubber parts of the wipers, this operation of the wipers does not take placewhen the vehicle is stationary and the ambi- ent temperature is about 32 °F (0 °C) or lower.  Do not cover the sensor by affixing a sticker or label to the windshield. Also, do not putany water-repellent coating on the wind- shield. The rain sensor would not be able to detect the extent of rain, and the wipersmight stop working normally.  In the following cases, the rain sensor may be malfunctioning. Have the vehicle checked at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice. • When the wipers operate at a constant inter- val despite changes in the extent of rain. • When the wipers do not operate even though it is raining.CAUTION
 The wipers may automatically operate when things such as insects or foreign objects are affixed to the windshield on top of the rain sensor or when the windshield is frozen. Objects affixed to the windshield will stopthe wipers when the wipers cannot remove them. To operate the wipers again, move the lever to the “LO” or “HI” position.Also, the wipers may operate automatically due to strong direct sunlight or electromag- netic wave. To stop the wipers, move thelever to the “OFF” position.  Contact an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair
facility of your choice
when replacing the windshield glass.

Move the lever in the direction of the arrow and release, to operate the wipers once. Use this function when you are driving in mist or drizzle.The wipers will operate once if the lever is raised to the “MIST” position and released when the ignition switch is in the “ON” or
“ACC” position. The wipers will continue to operate while the lever is held in the “MIST” position. The wipers will operate once if the lever is moved to the “AUTO” position and the knob (C) is turned in the “+”direction when the ignition switch is “ON” position.

To turn on the windshield washer, pull thelever toward you with the ignition switch ineither the “ON” or “ACC” position. Rear window wiper and washer OFF- Off INT- The wiper operates continuously for
several seconds then operates inter- mittently at intervals of about 8 sec- onds.NOTE

Washer fluid will be sprayed onto the rear window glass while the knob is turned fully in either direction. When the washer fluid is sprayed, the wiper will automatically operate 2 or 3 times.NOTE
 The rear window wiper will automatically perform several continuous operations if the gearshift lever or the selector lever is put inthe “R” position while the windshield wipers or the rear window wiper is operating. (auto- matic operation mode)After the automatic operation, the rear win- dow wiper will stop operating if the knob is in the “OFF” position. If the knob is in the“INT” position, the rear window wiper will return to the intermittent operation. It is possible to set the rear window wiper toperform the automatic operation only if the gearshift lever or the selector lever is put in the “R” position while the rear windowwiper is operating with the knob in the “INT” position. See your authorized Mitsubishi Motorsdealer for details.  If the knob is in the “OFF” position, turn the knob to the “INT” position twice quickly to operate the rear window wiper continuously.(continuous operation mode) Turn the knob to the “OFF” position to stop the rear window wiper continuous operation.
 The wiper intermittent operation time can be adjusted. See your authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer for details.  The washer fluid reservoir is located in the engine compartment. Check the fluid level regularly and refill ifnecessary. (Refer to “Washer fluid” on page 9-12.)
Precautions to observe when using wipers and washers
CAUTION If the washer is used in cold weather, the washer fluid sprayed onto the glass might freeze, blocking your view. In cold weather, heat the glass with the defroster before usingthe washer.NOTE
 Do not use the wipers when the windshield is dry. This could scratch the glass and wear the wiper blades prematurely.  Before using the wipers in cold weather, check to be sure that the wiper blades are not frozen to the windshield. Using the wiperswhile the blades are frozen could cause the wiper motor to burn out.NOTE

Electric rear window defogger switch

The electric rear window defogger can be used when the engine is running. The indicator light (A) will come on when you press the electric rear window defoggerswitch. Electric current will flow through the heating wires on the rear window to help clear away moisture or frost.
After about 20 minutes of operation, the sys- tem will shut off automatically. To switch the defogger OFF before 20 min-utes have passed, press the switch again. The indicator light will go out and the defogger will turn off. If you need the defogger for more than 20minutes, press the switch
again. This will add
20 more minutes.

To honk the horn, press around the “ ” mark on the steering wheel.
 If the wipers become blocked by ice or other deposits on the glass, the motor may still burn out even if the wiper switch is OFF. If deposits form on the windshield, park your vehicle in a safe place, turn off the engine,and clean the glass so that the wipers can operate smoothly.  Avoid using the washer for more than 20 sec- onds at a time. Do not operate the washer when the fluid reser
voir is empty or the
pump may fail.  During cold weather, add a recommended washer solution that will not freeze in the washer reservoir. Otherwise the washer may not work or may be damaged.  Replace the wiper blades when they are worn. Use the proper size replacementblades. If you have questions, ask your authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer.
Electric rear window defog- ger switch
NOTE
CAUTION The rear window defogger is not designed to melt snow. Remove any snow manuallybefore using the rear window defogger. Use the rear window defogger only after the engine has started and is running. Be sure to turn the defogger switch off immediately after the window is clear to save on batterypower.
 Do not place stickers, tape, or other items that are attached with adhesive over the grid wires on the rear window. When cleaning the inside rear window, use a soft cloth and wipe lightly over the grid wires.NOTE
 If your vehicle is equipped with heated mir- rors, mist can also be removed from the out-side rearview mirrors when the rear window defogger switch is pressed. (Refer to “Heated mirror” on page 5-53.)

Pull the lever toward you to release the engine hood latch.
Release the safety lever and lift the engine hood.
Support the engine hood with the hood prop. Insert the hood prop securely in the opening under the hood marked with an arrow.
WA R N I N G Never use the release lever to unlatch the engine hood while the vehicle is in motion.  Do not drive your vehicle unless the engine hood is locked.
NOTE
 To prevent damage to the engine hood and wipers, make sure the wipers are at restingposition when you open the engine hood.
CAUTION Always insert the support prop into the hole specially made for it. Propping the engine hood at any other place could cause the propto slip out and lead to an accident.  The hood prop can fall out if the hood is lifted by a strong wind.

Check the wiper blades occasionally. Clean them regularly to remove deposits of salt androad film. Use a sponge or cloth and a mild detergent or non-abrasive cleaner to clean the blades and glass areas.Replace the blades if they continue to streak or smear. If the blades are frozen to the windshield or rear window, do not operate the wipers until the ice has melted and the blades are freed,otherwise the wiper motor may be damaged.

During cold weather Emission-control system maintenance
NOTE
 To meet government regulations and pro- mote cleaner air, your vehicle is equipped with an onboard diagnostic system (OBD). The engine electronic control module that controls OBD functions stores various data(especially about the exhaust emissions). This data will be erased if the battery cable is disconnected, which could make a rapiddiagnosis difficult. Do not disconnect the battery cable when the engine malfunction indicator (“SERVICE ENGINE SOON” or“Check engine light”) is on.
Spark plugs
NOTE
 Use the spark plugs listed under “Engine specifications” on page 11-5 or plugs that are exactly the same. Other plugs could causeengine damage, performance problems or radio noise.
