Slowly turn the ignition switch to the “LOCK” position while pressing it. First, set the gearshift lever to the “P” (PARK) position, and then slowly turn theignition switch to the “LOCK” position while pressing it.

With the F.A.S.T.-key, warnings are given through buzzers and displays on the informa-tion screen in the multi-information display in order to prevent mistaken operations or vehicle theft.When a warning operates, be sure to check the vehicle and the F.A.S.T.-key. A warning is also displayed if there is a problem in theF. A . S . T. - k e y. If the following warning displays, contact an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer.
If the following warning display, the display goes off if corrective action is taken.  The ID codes of the F.A.S.T.-key and the vehicle cannot be verified  A door cannot be locked even when the driver’s or front passenger’s door lock/unlock switch is pressed
To turn from “ACC” to “LOCK”

NOTE
 For vehicle with Twin Clutch SST, the igni- tion switch cannot be turned to the “LOCK” position unless the gearshift lever is in the“P” (PARK) position.
CAUTION If the engine is stopped while driving, the power brake booster will stop functioning and greater effort for braking will be required. Also, the power steering system will not function and it will require greatereffort to manually steer the vehicle. Do not leave the ignition switch in the “ON” or “ACC” position for a long time when the engine is not running. Doing so could lead to a dead battery. Do not turn the ignition switch to the “START” position when the engine is run-ning. It will damage the starter motor.
Warning activation

There is a problem in the F. A . S . T. - k e y Someone may be carrying a F.A.S.T.-key with a different ID code, or the F.A.S.T.-key may not be within the oper- ating range Refer to “F.A.S.T.-key take- out monitoring system” on page 5-18. The battery of the F.A.S.T.- key is run down Refer to “Key lock-in pre- vention system” on page 5-18. Refer to “Door ajar preven- tion system” on page 5-18.

3. If the engine still will not start, the engine could be flooded with too much gasoline. While depressing the brake pedal on vehi- cles equipped with Twin Clutch SST orthe clutch pedal on the vehicles equipped with manual transaxle, push the accelera- tor pedal all the way down and hold itthere, then crank the engine for 5 to 6 sec- onds. Return the ignition switch to the “LOCK” position and release the acceler-ator pedal. Wait a few seconds, and thencrank the engine again for 5 to 6 seconds while depressing the brake pedal or the clutch pedal, but do not push the accelera-tor pedal. Release the ignition key if the engine starts. If the engine fails to start, repeat these procedures. If the engine stillwill not start, contact your local Mitsubi- shi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice for assistance.
When the ambient temperature is -22 °F (-30 °C) or lower, it may not be possible to startfrom a standstill even with the gearshift lever in the “D” (DRIVE) position. This phenomenon occurs because the trans- mission has not warmed up sufficiently; itdoes not indicate a problem. If it occurs,
place the gearshift lever in the “P” (PARK) position and let the engine idle for at least 10 minutes. The transmission will warm up, and you willbe able to start normally. Do not leave the vehicle during warm-up operation.

The emergency key is built into the F.A.S.T.- key.When the F.A.S.T.-key cannot be used, such as when the battery of the F.A.S.T.-key or the vehicle has run down, the emergency key canbe used to lock and unlock the driver’s door and to start the engine. To use the emergency key (1), unlock the lock knob (2) and remove it from the F.A.S.T.-key(3).

that the door is locked, turn the emergencykey back to the center and remove it.

3. Insert the emergency key into the ignition switch, and slowly push and turn.
1. [For vehicles with manual transaxle] Push the emergency key in at the “ACC” position and keep it
depressed until it is
turned to the “LOCK” position, andremove. [For vehicles with Twin Clutch SST (sportronic shift transmission)]First, set the gearshift lever to the “P” (PARK) position, and then slowly turn the ignition switch to the “LOCK” positionwhile pressing it. 2. Install the cover of the ignition switch.
3. Reinsert the emergency key into the F. A . S . T. - k e y.
NOTE
 When the ignition switch cannot be turned from the “LOCK” position to the “ACC” position, turn the ignition switch while turn-ing the steering wheel in both directions.
To turn from “ACC” to “LOCK”
NOTE
 For vehicles with Twin Clutch SST, the emergency key cannot be removed unless thegearshift lever is set to the “P” (PARK) posi- tion.
NOTE
 Always install the cover of the ignition switch when not using the emergency key.Not doing so could cause damage if foreign material such as dust
gets into the keyhole of
the ignition switch.CAUTION Do not turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position while the vehicle is moving. 6. On vehicles with manual transaxle, place the gearshift lever in the “N” (Neutral) position. On vehicles with Twin Clutch SST, makesure the gearshift lever is in the “P” (PARK) position. 7. Turn the ignition switch to the “ON” posi- tion and make certain that all warninglights are functioning properly before starting the engine. 8. Turn the ignition switch to the “START”position without pressing the accelerator pedal. Release the key when the engine starts.
After several attempts, you may experience that the engine still does not start.
1. Make sure that all electric devices, such as lights, air conditioning blower and rear window defogger, are turned off. 2. While depressing the brake pedal on vehi-cles equipped with Twin Clutch SST or the clutch pedal on the vehicles equipped with manual transaxle, press the accelera-tor pedal halfway and hold it there, then crank the engine. Release the accelerator pedal, immediately after the engine starts.3. If the engine still will not start, the enginecould be flooded with too much gasoline. At high altitude locations, the idle speed maybe higher. This is done in order to stabilizethe idle speed when the power steering sys- tem and other systems operate. It does not indicate a malfunction.

As an additional safety precaution, models equipped with a Twin Clutch SST have a shift-lock device that holds the gearshift lever in the “P” (PARK) position. To move thegearshift lever from the “P” (PARK) position to another position, follow the steps below. 1. Press and hold the brake pedal down.
2. Move the gearshift lever to the desired position.
The Twin Clutch SST has 6 forward gears and 1 reverse gear.The individual gears are selected automati- cally, depending on the position of the gear- shift lever, the speed of the vehicle and theposition of the accelerator pedal. The gearshift lever (A) has 2 gates; the main shift gate (B) and the manual shift gate (C).

When the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position, the gearshift lever position isshown on the multi-information display. In addition, when the vehicle is driven with the gearshift lever in the “D” (DRIVE) posi-tion, the forward gear number is shown.
NOTE
 In the main shift gate, the gearshift lever has 4 positions.  For information on manual shift gate opera- tion, please refer to “Manual shift” on page5-64.
The pull-ring (D) must be pulled up while the brake pedal is depressed to move the gearshift lever. The gearshift lever will move without pulling up the pull-ring (D). The pull-ring (D) must be pulled up to move the gearshift lever.
WA R N I N G If the pull-ring is always pulled up when using the gearshift lever, the gearshift lever may be accidentally shifted into the “P” (PARK) or “R” (REVERSE) position. Do not pull up the pull-ring when making shifts shown by in the illustration. Always depress the brake pedal when shifting the gearshift lever into the other position from the “P” (PARK) or “N”(NEUTRAL) position. When beginning to drive, do not shift the gearshift lever from the “P” (PARK) or“N” (NEUTRAL) position while depress- ing the accelerator pedal. Doing so is dan- gerous because the vehicle will “jump”forward or backward.NOTE
 For a shift indicated by in the illustration, depress the brake pedal before moving the gearshift lever. If you attempt to move thegearshift lever before depressing the brake pedal, the gearshift lever will be immovable.  Do not accelerate immediately after moving the gearshift lever. It may take some time for the transmission to shift to the selected gear.  When the gearshift lever is operated when the Twin Clutch SST fluid temperature islow, the time required to shift to the selected gear may be longer than usual.

This position locks the transmission to pre- vent the vehicle from moving. The engine can be started from the “PARK” position. Move the lever to this position only after the vehicle has come to a complete stop. At this position, the transmission is disen- gaged. It is the same as the neutral position on a manual transaxle and should be used whenthe vehicle is not moving for an extended
length of time during driving, such as in a traffic jam. This position is used for most city and high- way driving. Engine shifting and braking are done automatically as needed, depending onroad conditions.

Select the control mode from the following three types to suit the driving conditions.

“R” REVERSE

CAUTION Never shift into the “P” (PARK) or “R” (REVERSE) position while
the vehicle is in
motion. If the lever is shifted into the “P” (PARK) or “R” (REVERSE) position whilethe vehicle is in motion, the transmission may be damaged.
“N” NEUTRAL

WA R N I N G Never move the gearshift lever to the “N” (NEUTRAL) position while driving since you could accidentally slip it into the “P”(PARK) or “R”(REVERSE) position and the engine speed could rise, damaging the transmission. To prevent the vehicle from rolling when stopped on a slope, the engine should bestarted in the “P” (PARK) position. Although the engine can be started when the vehicle is in the “N” (NEUTRAL) posi-tion, for safety reasons, do not start the engine in the “N” (NEUTRAL) position. Always keep your foot on the brake pedal when the vehicle is in “N” (NEUTRAL) position, or when shifting into or out of“N” (NEUTRAL) position, to prevent roll- ing.
“D” DRIVE

CAUTION Never shift into the “D” (DRIVE) position from the “R” (REVERSE) position while the vehicle is in motion. If the lever is shifted into the “D” (DRIVE) from the “R” (REVERSE) position while thevehicle is in motion, the transmission may be damaged.NOTE
 For information on manual shift gate opera- tion, please refer to “Manual shift” on page 5-64.  When the engine is cold, upshifts occur at a higher vehicle speed than when the engine is warm.This control is performed to quickly warm up the engine. It does not indicate a malfunc- tion. After the vehicle
has been driven for a
while, upshifts will occur at the regular engine speeds.
