NOTElWhen the following operation is performed
with the operation mode in OFF, the steering wheel is locked.
• Open or close one of the doors (except the
tailgate).
• Lock all doors and the tailgate with the
keyless entry system or the keyless opera- tion function.
l When the steering wheel does not unlock,
the warning will be displayed on the infor-
mation screen in the multi-information dis-
play. Press the engine switch again while moving the steering wheel slightly.Starting and stopping the en-
gine

Tips for starting
l The operation mode can be in any mode
to start the engine.
l The starter motor will be turning for up
to approximately 15 seconds if the en-
gine switch is released at once. Pressing the engine switch again while the starter
motor is still turning will stop the starter motor. The starter motor will be turningfor up to approximately 30 seconds while the engine switch is pressed.
If the engine does not start, wait for a
while and then attempt to start the en- gine again. Trying repeatedly with the
starter motor still running will damage the starter mechanism.
l [For diesel-powered vehicles with M/T]
While the vehicle is stationary with the
clutch pedal fully depressed, the engine revolutions do not rise to over 3,000 rpm
in order to protect the engine even if the accelerator pedal is depressed.WARNINGl Never run the engine in a closed or poorly
ventilated area any longer than is needed to move your vehicle in or out of the area.Carbon monoxide gases are odourless and can be fatal.CAUTIONl Never attempt to start the engine by pushing
or pulling the vehicle.CAUTIONl Do not run the engine at high rpm or drive
the vehicle at high speed until the engine hashad a chance to warm up.Starting the engine (petrol-pow-
ered vehicles)
E00307000944
The starting procedure is as follows: 1. Fasten the seat belt.
2. Make sure the parking brake is applied.
3. Depress and hold the brake pedal.
4. Fully depress the clutch pedal (M/T).
NOTEl On vehicles with the Auto Stop & Go
(AS&G) system, the starter will not operate
unless the clutch pedal is fully depressed
(Clutch interlock).
5. On vehicles equipped with M/T, place
the gearshift lever in the “N” (Neutral) position.

On vehicles equipped with CVT, make
sure the selector lever is in the “P”
(PARK) position.Vehicles with M/TVehicles with CVT
NOTEl The engine can only be started when the se-
lector lever is in the “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL) position (CVT).
For safety reasons, the engine should be star-
ted when the selector lever is in the “P” (PARK) position in which the driving
wheels lock.
6. Press the engine switch.
7. Make sure that all warning lamps are
functioning properly.
NOTEl Minor noises may be heard on engine start-
up. These will disappear as the engine
warms up.
When it is difficult to start the engine
After several attempts, you may experience
that the engine still does not start. 1. Make sure that all electric devices, such
as lamps, air conditioning blower and
rear window demister, are turned off.
2. While depressing the brake pedal ( CVT)
or the clutch pedal ( M/T), press the ac-
celerator pedal halfway and hold it there, then crank the engine. Release the accel-erator pedal, immediately after the en-
gine starts.
3. If the engine still will not start, the en-
gine could be flooded with too much
petrol. While depressing the brake pedal (CVT ) or the clutch pedal ( M/T), push
the accelerator pedal all the way down and hold it there, then press the engine
switch to crank the engine. If the engine does not start after 5 to 6 seconds, push
the engine switch to stop cranking the
engine, and release the accelerator pedal. Put the operation mode in OFF. Wait a
few seconds, and then press the engine
switch to crank the engine again while
depressing the brake pedal ( CVT) or the
clutch pedal ( M/T), but do not push the
accelerator pedal. If the engine fails to
start, repeat these procedures. If the en-
gine still will not start, we recommend
you to have the vehicle checked.Starting the engine (diesel-pow-

(Reverse) (on a downhill) position.
On vehicles with A/T or CVT , move the
selector lever to the “P” (PARK) posi- tion, press the engine switch to stop the
engine.NOTEl For diesel-powered vehicles, if the tempera-
ture inside the engine compartment is high,
the cooling fans (A) will continue to operate for some time even if the engine is stopped.
Therefore, the operation sound of the cool-
ing fans may be heard even after the engine is stopped. This sound is normal and does
not indicate a malfunction.
After operating for a period of time, the cooling fans will stop automatically.

Insert the keyless operation key into the key
slot in the glove box. Starting the engine and changing the operation mode should now be possible.
Remove the keyless operation key from the
key slot after starting the engine or changing the operation mode.NOTEl Do not insert into the key slot anything other
than the keyless operation key. This couldcause damage or a malfunction.
l Remove the object or additional key from
the the keyless operation key before insert-ing the key into the key slot.
The vehicle may not be able to receive the
registered ID code from the registered key.
Therefore, the engine may not start and the
operation mode may not change.

E00502400147Brake warning lamp
E00502502357
This lamp illuminates whenthe ignition switch is turnedto the “ON” position or the
operation mode is put in ON, and goes off after a few sec-onds.
Always make sure that the lamp goes off be- fore driving.
With the ignition switch or the operation mode in ON, the brake warning lamp illumi-
nates under the following conditions:
l When the parking brake lever has been
engaged.
l When the brake fluid level in the reser-
voir falls to a low level.
l When the brake force distribution func-
tion is not operating correctly.
CAUTIONl In the situations listed below, brake perform-
ance may be compromised or the vehicle may become unstable if brakes are applied
suddenly; consequently, avoid driving at
high speeds or applying the brakes suddenly. Furthermore, the vehicle should be brought
to a stop in a safe location and to have it
checked.
• The brake warning lamp does not illumi-
nate when the parking brake is applied ordoes not turn off when the parking brake is released.
• The ABS warning lamp and brake warn-
ing lamp illuminate at the same time
For details, refer to “ABS warning lamp”
on page 6-47.
• The brake warning lamp remains illumi-
nated during driving.
l The vehicle should be brought to a halt in
the following manner when brake perform- ance has deteriorated.
• Depress the brake pedal harder than usual.
Even if the brake pedal moves down to
the very end of its possible stroke, keep it
pressed down hard.
• Should the brakes fail, use engine braking
to reduce your speed and pull the parking
brake lever.
Depress the brake pedal to operate the
stop lamp to alert the vehicles behind you.Check engine warning lamp

This lamp is a part of an on-
board diagnostic system
which monitors the emis-
sions, engine control system or A/T control system/CVT
control system.
If a problem is detected in one of these sys- tems, this lamp illuminates or flashes.Although your vehicle will usually be driva-
ble and not need towing, we recommend you
to have the system checked as soon as possi-
ble.
This lamp will also illuminate when the igni- tion switch is turned “ON” or the operation
mode is put in ON, and goes off after the en- gine has started. If it does not go off after the
engine has started, we recommend you to have the vehicle checked.
CAUTIONl Prolonged driving with this lamp on may
cause further damage to the emission control
system. It could also affect fuel economy and drivability.
l If the lamp does not illuminate when the ig-
nition switch is turned to the “ON” position
or the operation mode is put in ON, we rec- ommend you to have the system checked.
