The SmartKey now functions as follows:
XTo unlock the driver's door:press the
6button once.
XTo unlock centrally:press the6
button twice.
XTo lock centrally:press the7button.
The KEYLESS-GO function is changed as
follows:
XTo unlock the driver's door:touch the
inner surface of the door handle on the
driver's door.
XTo unlock centrally:touch the inner
surface of the door handle on the front-
passenger door or the rear door.
XTo lock centrally:touch the outer sensor
surface on one of the door handles
(Ypage 81).
XTo restore the factory settings:press
and hold down the6and7buttons
simultaneously for approximately six
seconds until the battery check lamp
flashes twice (Ypage 83).
Mechanical key
General notes
If the vehicle can no longer be locked or
unlocked with the SmartKey, use the
mechanical key.
If you use the mechanical key to unlock and
open the driver's door, the anti-theft alarm
system will be triggered (Ypage 77).
There are several ways to turn off the alarm:
XTo deactivate the alarm with the
SmartKey:press the6or7button
on the SmartKey.
or
XInsert the SmartKey into the ignition lock.
or
XTo deactivate the alarm with KEYLESS-
GO:press the Start/Stop button in the
ignition lock. The SmartKey must be in the
vehicle.
or
XLock or unlock the vehicle using KEYLESS-
GO. The SmartKey must be outside the
vehicle.
If you unlock the vehicle using the mechanical
key, the fuel filler flap will not be unlocked
automatically.
XTo unlock the fuel filler flap:insert the
SmartKey into the ignition lock.
Removing the mechanical key
XPush release catchCin the direction of
the arrow and at the same time remove
mechanical keyDfrom the SmartKey.

Important safety notes
GWARNING
Batteries contain toxic and corrosive
substances. If batteries are swallowed, it can
result in severe health problems. There is a
risk of fatal injury.
Keep batteries out of the reach of children. If
a battery is swallowed, seek medical attention
immediately.
Mercedes-Benz recommends that you have
the batteries replaced at a qualified specialist
workshop.
The SmartKey batteries contain perchlorate
material, which may require special handling
and regard for the environment. National
guidelines must be observed during disposal.

Checking the battery
XPress the7or6button.
The battery is working properly if battery
check lampClights up briefly.
The battery is discharged if battery check
lampCdoes not light up briefly.
XChange the battery (Ypage 83).
iIf the SmartKey battery is checked within
the signal reception range of the vehicle,
pressing the7or6button:
Rlocks or
Runlocks the vehicle
iYou can get a battery at any qualified
specialist workshop.
Replacing the battery
You require a CR 2025 3 V cell battery.
XTake the mechanical key out of the
SmartKey (Ypage 82).
XPress mechanical keyDinto the opening
in the SmartKey in the direction of the
arrow until battery compartment coverC
opens. Do not hold battery compartment

Problems with the SmartKey

XLock/unlock the vehicle using the remote control function of
the SmartKey. Point the tip of the SmartKey at the driver's door
handle from close range and press the6or7button.
There is a malfunction with KEYLESS-GO.
XLock/unlock the vehicle using the remote control function of
the SmartKey. Point the tip of the SmartKey at the driver's door
handle from close range and press the6or7button.
XHave KEYLESS-GO checked at a qualified specialist workshop.
If this does not work:
XCheck the SmartKey battery (Ypage 83) and replace it if
necessary (Ypage 83).
XLock (Ypage 88) or unlock (Ypage 88) the vehicle using
the mechanical key.
You have lost a

Additionally, children could set the vehicle in
motion if, for example, they:
Rrelease the parking brake.
Rshifting the automatic transmission out of
park positionP
RStart the engine.
There is a risk of an accident and injury.
When leaving the vehicle, always take the
SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle. Never
leave children or animals unattended in the
vehicle. Always keep the SmartKey out of
reach of children.

If persons, particularly children are subjected
to prolonged exposure to extreme heat or
cold, there is a risk of injury, possibly even
fatal. Never leave children unattended in the
vehicle.
GWARNING
If objects, luggage or loads are not secured or
not secured sufficiently, they could slip, tip
over or be flung around and thereby hit vehicle
occupants. There is a risk of injury,
particularly in the event of sudden braking or
a sudden change in direction.
Always store objects so that they cannot be
flung around. Secure objects, luggage or
loads against slipping or tipping before the
journey.
You should preferably place luggage or loads
in the cargo compartment. Observe the
loading guidelines (Ypage 340).

Unlocking and opening doors from
the inside
You can open a door from inside the vehicle
even if it has been locked. You can only open
the rear doors from inside the vehicle if they
are not secured by the child-proof locks
(Ypage 66).
If the vehicle has been locked with the
SmartKey or with KEYLESS-GO, opening a
door from the inside will trigger the anti-theft
alarm system. Switch off the alarm
(Ypage 77).

up. The door is unlocked and can be
opened.

relevant rear door.
The rear door is unlocked and can be

Centrally locking and unlocking the
vehicle from the inside
You can centrally lock or unlock the vehicle
from the inside. The buttons are located on
both front doors.

If the front-passenger door is closed, the
vehicle locks.
Meanwhile, the fuel filler flap will not be
locked or unlocked.
You cannot unlock the vehicle centrally from
the inside if the vehicle has been locked with
the SmartKey or KEYLESS-GO.
You can open a front door from inside the
vehicle even if it has been locked.
If the vehicle has been locked using the
locking button for the central locking, or has
been locked automatically, and a door is
opened from the inside:
Rthe vehicle will be fully unlocked if it had
previously been fully unlocked
Ronly the door which has been opened form
the inside is unlocked if only the driver's
door had been previously unlocked

Automatic locking feature
XTo disarm:press and hold buttonCfor
about five seconds until a tone sounds.
XTo arm:press and hold buttonDfor about
five seconds until a tone sounds.
iIf you press one of the two buttons and
do not hear a tone, the relevant setting has
already been selected.
The vehicle is locked automatically when the
ignition is switched on and the wheels are
turning.
You could therefore be locked out if:
Rthe vehicle is being pushed.
Rthe vehicle is being towed.
Rthe vehicle is on a roller dynamometer.
You can also switch the automatic locking
function on and off using the on-board
computer (Ypage 284).
Power closing
Power closing pulls the doors and trunk lid
into their locks automatically even if they are
only partly closed.
XTo power close a door:push the door into
the lock up to the first detent position.
Power closing will pull the door fully closed.
XTo power close the tailgate:lightly press
the tailgate downwards.
Power closing will pull the tailgate fully
closed.
Unlocking the driver's door
(mechanical key)
If the vehicle can no longer be unlocked with
the SmartKey, use the mechanical key.
If you use the mechanical key to unlock and
open the driver's door, the anti-theft alarm
system will be triggered (Ypage 77).
XTake the mechanical key out of the
SmartKey (Ypage 82).
XInsert the mechanical key into the lock of
the driver's door as far as it will go.
XTurn the mechanical key counter-clockwise
to positionG.
The door is unlocked.
XTurn the mechanical key back and remove
it.
XInsert the mechanical key into the
SmartKey.
Locking the vehicle (mechanical key)
If the vehicle can no longer be locked with the
SmartKey, use the mechanical key.
XOpen the driver's door.
XClose the front-passenger door, the rear
doors and the tailgate.
XPress the locking button (Ypage 87).
XCheck whether the locking knobs on the
front-passenger door and the rear doors
are still visible. Press down the locking
knobs by hand, if necessary.
XClose the driver's door.

the fuel filler flap is not locked. The anti-
theft alarm system is not armed.

GWARNING
Combustion engines emit poisonous exhaust
gases such as carbon monoxide. If the tailgate
is open when the engine is running,
particularly if the vehicle is moving, exhaust
fumes could enter the passenger
compartment. There is a risk of poisoning.
Turn off the engine before opening the
tailgate. Never drive with the tailgate open.

!The tailgate swings upwards and to the
rear when opened. Therefore, make sure
that there is sufficient clearance above and
behind the tailgate.

You should preferably place luggage or loads
in the cargo compartment. Observe the
loading guidelines (Ypage 340).
Do not leave the SmartKey in the cargo
compartment. You could otherwise lock
yourself out.
You can:
Rclose the tailgate manually from outside
Ropen and close the tailgate automatically
from outside
Ropen and close the tailgate automatically
from inside
Rlimit the opening angle of the tailgate
Runlock the tailgate from inside with the
emergency release
Tailgate reversing feature
On vehicles with tailgate remote closing
feature, the tailgate is equipped with
automatic obstacle recognition with a
reversing feature. If a solid object blocks or
restricts the tailgate when automatically

opening or closing, this procedure is stopped.
If the tailgate is stopped during the closing
procedure, it will open again automatically.
The automatic obstacle recognition with
reversing function is only an aid. It is not a
substitute for your attentiveness when
opening and closing the tailgate.
GWARNING
The reversing feature does not react:
Rto soft, light and thin objects, e.g. small
fingers
Rover the last 1/3 in (8 mm) of the closing
movement
This means that the reversing feature cannot
prevent someone being trapped in these
situations. There is a risk of injury.
Make sure that no body parts are in close
proximity during the closing procedure.
If somebody becomes trapped:
Rpress theTbutton on the SmartKey, or
Rpress the remote operating switch on the
driver’s door, or
Rpress the closing or locking button on the
tailgate, or
Rpull the handle on the tailgate

XPress the6button on the SmartKey.
XPull handleCand release it.
The tailgate opens automatically.
Closing
XPull the tailgate down using recessC.
XAllow the tailgate to drop into the lock.
XLock the vehicle if necessary with
the7button on the SmartKey or with
KEYLESS-GO.
iIf a KEYLESS-GO key is detected in the
cargo compartment, the tailgate will not
lock.

outside
Important safety notes
GWARNING
Parts of the body could become trapped
during automatic closing of the tailgate.
Moreover, people, e.g. children, may be
standing in the closing area or may enter the
closing area during the closing process. There
is a risk of injury.
Make sure that nobody is in the vicinity of the
closing area during the closing process.
Use one of the following options to stop the
closing process:
Rpress theTbutton on the SmartKey.
Rpress the remote operating switch on the
driver's door.
