Active Blind Spot Assist(Ypage 211) and
Active LaneKeepingAssist(Ypage 214).
Active Blind Spot Assist
Generalnotes
Active Blind Spot Assistusesaradar sensor
system, pointed toward the rear of the
vehicle, to monitor the area to the sides of the
vehicle which the driver is unable to see. A
warning displayinthe exterior mirrors draws
your attention to vehicles detected in the
monitored area. If you then switch on the
corresponding turn signal to change lane, you
will also receive an optical and audible
warning. Ifarisk of lateral collision is
detected, corrective braking may help you
avoidacollision. Beforeacourse-correcting
brake application, Active Blind Spot Assist
evaluates the space in the direction of travel
and at the sides of the vehicle. For this, Active
Blind Spot Assist uses radar sensors which
are pointed in the direction of travel.
Active Blind Spot Assist supports you from a
speed of approximately 20 mph (30 km/h).
For Active Blind Spot Assist to assist you
when driving, the radar sensor system must
be:

Active Blind Spot Assist is only an aid and is
notasubstitute for attentive driving.
GWARNING
Active Blind Spot Assist does not react to:
Rvehicles overtaken too closely on the side,
placing them in the blind spot area
Rvehicles which approach withalarge speed
differential and overtakeyour vehicle
Asaresult, Active Blind Spot Assist may
neither give warnings nor intervene in such
situations. There isarisk of an accident.
Always observe the traffic conditions
carefully, and maintainasafe lateral distance.

This device has been approved by the FCC
asa"Vehicular RadarSystem". The radar
sensor is intended foruse in an automotive
radar system only. Removing, tampering
with, or altering the device will void any
warranties, and is not permitted by the
FCC. Do not tamper with, alter, or use in

Radarsensors
The Active Blind Spot Assist radar sensors are
integrated into the front and rear bumpers
and behindacover in the radiator grill. Make
sure that the bumpers and the cover in the
radiator grill are free of dirt, ice or slush. The
rear sensors must not be covered, for
example by cycle racks or overhanging cargo.
Followingasevere impact or in the event of
damage to the bumpers, have the function of
the radar sensors checked ataqualified

Active LaneKeeping Assist
Generalnotes
Active LaneKeepingAssistmonitorsthe area
in front of your vehicle by means of
cameraat the top of the windshield. Active
Lane Keeping Assist detectslane markings on
theroad and warnsyou before you leave your
lane unintentionally. If you do notreact to the
warning,alane-correctingapplication of the
brakes can bring the vehicle back intothe
original lane.
If you have chosen the functionDisplay
Unit Speed-/Odometer:(Ypage 229)and
selected the display unitkmin the on-board
computer, Active Lane Keeping Assist
supports you fromaspeed of 60 km/h. If
milesis selected as the display unit, the
assistancerange begins at 40 mph.
For Active Lane Keeping Assist to assist you
when driving, the radar sensor system must
be operational.
Important safetynotes
If you fail to adapt your driving style, Active
Lane Keeping Assist can neither reduce the
risk of accidentnor override the laws of
physics. Active Lane Keeping Assist cannot
take into account road, weather or traffic
conditions. It cannot detect possible road and
traffic conditions. Active Lane Keeping Assist
is only an aid. You are responsible for the
distance to the vehicle in front,for vehicle
speed, for braking in good time and for
staying in your lane.
Active Lane Keeping Assist cannot
continuously keep your vehicle in its lane.
GWARNING
Active Lane Keeping Assist cannot always
clearly detect lane markings.
In such cases, Active Lane Keeping Assist
can:
Rgive an unnecessary warning and then
makeacourse-correcting brake application
to the vehicle
Rnot giveawarning or intervene
There isarisk of an accident.
Always pay particular attention to the traffic
situation and keep within the lane, especially
if Active Lane Keeping Assist alerts you.
Terminate the intervention inanon-critical
driving situation.
The system may be impaired or may not
function if:
Rthere is poor visibility, e.g. due to
insufficient illumination of the road, or due
to snow, rain, fog or spray
Rthere is glare, e.g. from oncoming traffic,
the sun or reflections (e.g. when the road
surface is wet)
Rthe windshield is dirty, fogged up, damaged
or covered, for instance byasticker, in the
vicinityofthe camera
Rthe radar sensors in the front or rear
bumper or in the radiator grill are dirty, e.g.
due to snow
Rthere are no, several or unclear lane
markings foralane, e.g. in areas with road
construction work
Rthe lane markings are worn away,dark or
covered up, e.g. by dirt or snow
Rthe distance to the vehicle in front is too
small and the lane markings thus cannot be
detected
Rthe lane markings change quickly, e.g.
lanes branch off, cross one another or
merge

stationsorother sources of electromagnetic radiation.
RAMG vehicles: ESP®is deactivated.
Rthe system is outside the operating temperature range.
Rthe on-board voltage is too low.
When the causes stated above no longer apply, the display
message disappears.
PRE-SAFE®Brake is operational again.
If the display message does not disappear:
XPull over and stop the vehicle safely as soon as possible,paying
attention to road and traffic conditions.
XSecure the vehicle against rollingaway (Ypage 167).
XClean the sensors in the radiator grill and the bumper

Under normal operating conditionsand with the specified coolant

running.
The coolant level is too low.
If the coolant level is correct, the airflow to the engine radiator
may be blocked or the electric engine radiator fan may be
malfunctioning.
The coolant is too hot and the engine is no longer being cooled
sufficiently.
XObserve the additional display messages in the multifunction
display.
XPull over and stop the vehicle safely and switch off the engine,
paying attention to road and traffic conditions.
XSecure the vehicle against rolling away (Ypage 167).
XLeave the vehicle and keepasafe distance from the vehicle until
the engine has cooled down.
XCheck the coolant level and add coolant, observing the warning
notes (Ypage 308).
XIf you need to add coolant more often than usual, have the
engine coolant system checked.
XMake sure that the air supply to the engine radiator is not
blocked, e.g. by snow, slush or ice.
XDo not start the engine again until the coolant temperature is
under 248‡(120 †). Otherwise,the engine couldbedamaged.
XDrive to the nearest qualified specialist workshop.
XAvoid subjecting the engine to heavy loads, e.g. driving in

catchfire.
Steam from the overheated engine can also cause serious burns
which can occur just by opening the hood.

XPull over and stop the vehicle safely and switch off the engine,
paying attention to road and traffic conditions.

Important safetynotes
GWARNING
If the hood is unlatched, it may open up when
the vehicle is in motion and block your view.
There isarisk of an accident.
Never unlatchthe hood while driving.
GWARNING
When openingand closingthe hood, it may
suddenly fall intothe closed position.There is
arisk of injury to persons within range of
movement of the hood.
Open and close the hood only when no one is
within its range of movement.
GWARNING
Certain components in the engine
compartment, such as the engine, radiator
and parts of the exhaust system, can become
very hot. Working in the engine compartment
posesarisk of injury.
Where possible, let the engine cool down and
touch only the components described in the
following.
GWARNING
Opening the hood when the engine is
overheated or when there isafire in the
engine compartmentcould expose you to hot
gases or other service products. There is a
risk of injury.
Let an overheated engine cool down before
opening the hood. If there isafire in the
engine compartment, keep the hood closed
and contact the fire department.
GWARNING
The engine compartment contains moving
components. Certain components, such as
the radiator fan, may continue to run or start
again suddenly when the ignition is off. There
isarisk of injury.
If you need to do any work inside the engine
compartment,
Rswitch off the ignition
Rnever reach into the area where there is a
risk of danger from moving components,
such as the fan rotation area
Rkeep clothingaway from moving parts
GWARNING
The ignition system and the fuel injection
system work under high voltage. If you touch
components which are under voltage, you
could get an electric shock. There isarisk of
injury.
Never touch components of the ignition
system or fuel injection system when the
ignition is switched on.
Opening the hood
GWARNING
When the hood is open and the windshield
wipers are set in motion,you can be injured
by the wiper linkage. There isarisk of injury.
Always switch off the windshield wipers and
the ignition before opening the hood.
