bodytoremove any existing electrostatic
build-up.
The highly flammable gasmixture forms when
charging the battery as well as whenjump-
starting.
Always makesure that neither you northe
battery is electrostatically charged.Abuild-
up of electrostaticcharge can be caused, for
example:
Rby wearing clothing made from synthetic
fibers
Rdue to friction between clothing and seats
Rif you push or pull the battery across the
carpet or other synthetic materials
Rif you wipe the battery withacloth
GWARNING
During the charging process,abattery
produces hydrogen gas. Ifashort circuit
occurs or sparks are created, the hydrogen
gas can ignite. There isarisk of an explosion.
RMake sure that the positive terminal of a
connected battery does not come into
contact with vehicle parts.
RNever place metal objectsortools on a
battery.
RIt is important that you observe the
described order of the battery terminals
when connecting and disconnecting a
battery.
RWhen jump-starting, make sure that the
battery poles with identical polarity are
connected.
RIt is particularly important to observe the
described order when connecting and
disconnecting the jumper cables.
RNever connect or disconnectthe battery
terminals while the engine is running.
GWARNING
Batteryacid is caustic. There isarisk of injury.
Avoid contact with the skin, eyes or clothing.
Do not inhale any battery gases. Do not lean
over the battery. Keep children away from
batteries. Wash battery acid immediately with
water and seek medical attention.
HEnvironmental note
Batteries contain dangerous
substances. It is against the
law to dispose of them with
the household rubbish. They
must be collected separately
and recycled to protect the
environment.
Dispose of batteries in an
environmentally friendly
manner. Take discharged
batteries toaqualified
specialist workshop or a
special collection point for
used batteries.
!Have the battery checked regularly at a
qualified specialist workshop.
Observe the service intervals in the
MaintenanceBooklet or contactaqualified
specialist workshop for more information.
!You should have all work involving the
battery carried out ataqualified specialist
workshop. In theexceptional casethatitis
necessaryfor you to disconnect thebattery
yourself, makesure that:
Ryou switch off theengineand remove the
SmartKey. On vehicles withKEYLESS-
GO, ensure that theignition is switched
off.Check that all the indicator lamps in
the instrumentcluster are off.Otherwise,
electroniccomponents, such as the
alternator,may be damaged.
Ryou first remove the negative terminal
clamp and then the positive terminal
clamp. Never swap the terminal clamps.
Otherwise, the vehicle's electronic
system may be damaged.
Rthe transmission is locked in positionP
after disconnectingthe battery. The
vehicle is secured against rolling away.
You can then no longer move the vehicle.

GWARNING
Adischarged battery can freeze at
temperatures below freezingpoint.When
jump-starting the vehicle or charging the
battery, gases can escape from the battery.
There isarisk of an explosion.
Allow the frozen battery to thaw out before
charging it or jump-starting.
!Only use battery chargers with a
maximum charging voltage of 14.8 V.
!Only charge the battery using the jump-
startingconnection point.
The jump-starting connection point is in the
engine compartment(Ypage 326).
XOpen the hood (Ypage 306).
XConnect the battery charger to the positive
terminal and ground point in the same
order as when connecting the donor
battery in the jump-starting procedure
(Ypage 326).
If, at low temperatures, the indicator lamps/
warning lamps in the instrumentcluster do
not light up, it is highly likely that the
discharged battery has frozen.Inthis case,
you may neither charge the battery nor jump-
start the vehicle. The service life ofathawed-
out battery may be shorter. The starting
characteristics may be impaired, especiallyat
low temperatures. Have the thawed-out
battery checked ataqualified specialist
workshop.
Never chargeabattery still installed in the
vehicle unlessabattery charger unit
approved by Mercedes-Benzisbeing used. A
battery charger unit speciallyadapted for
Mercedes-Benz vehicles and tested and
approved by Mercedes-Benz is available as an
accessory. It permits the charging of the
battery in its installed position. Contact an
authorized Mercedes-Benz Center for further
information and availability. Read the battery

Fuses
Important safety notes
GWARNING
If you manipulate or bridgeafaulty fuse or if
you replace it withafuse withahigher
amperage, the electric cables could be
overloaded. This could result inafire. There
isarisk of an accident and injury.
Always replace faulty fuses with the specified
new fuses having the correct amperage.
!Only use fuses that have been approved
for Mercedes-Benzvehicles and which
have the correct fuse ratingfor the system
concerned. Otherwise, componentsor
systems could be damaged.
The fuses in your vehicle serve to close down
faulty circuits. Ifafuse blows,all the
componentsonthecircuit and their functions
stop operating.
Blown fusesmust be replacedwith fuses of
the same rating, which you can recognize by
the color and value. The fuse ratings are listed
in the fuse allocation chart.

The tire pressure monitor hasayellow
warning lamp in the instrument cluster for
indicatingapressure loss or malfunction.
Whether the warning lamp flashes or lights up
indicates whetheratire pressure is too low or
the tire pressure monitor is malfunctioning:
Rif the warning lamp is lit continuously, the
tire pressure on one or more tires is
significantly too low. The tire pressure
monitor is not malfunctioning.
Rif the warning lamp flashes for around a
minute and then remains lit constantly, the
tire pressure monitor is malfunctioning.
If the tire pressure monitor is malfunctioning,
it may take more than ten minutes for the tire
pressure warning lamp to inform you of the
malfunction by flashing for approximately one
minute and then remaining lit. When the
malfunction has been rectified, the tire
pressure warning lamp goes out afterafew
minutes of driving.
The tire pressure values indicated by the on-
board computer may differ from those
measured atagas station withapressure
gauge. The tire pressures shown by the on-
board computer refer to those measured at
sea level. At high altitudes, the tire pressure
values indicated byapressure gauge are
higher than those shown by the on-board
computer.Inthis case, do not reduce the tire
pressures.
The operation of the tire pressure monitor can
be affected by interference from radio
transmitting equipment (e.g. radio
headphones, two-way radios) that may be
being operated in or near the vehicle.
