Useful information
iThis Operator's Manual describes all
models and all standard and optional
equipment of your vehicle available at the
time of publication of the Operator's
Manual. Country-specific differences are
possible. Please notethat your vehicle may
not be equipped with all features
described. This also applies to safety-
related systemsand functions.

Important safetynotes
GWARNING
If you operate information systemsand
communication equipment integrated in the
vehicle while driving, you will be distracted
from traffic conditions. You could also lose
controlofthe vehicle. There isarisk of an
accident.
Only operate the equipment when the traffic
situationpermits.Ifyou are not sure that this
is possible, park the vehicle paying attention
to traffic conditions and operate the
equipment when the vehicle is stationary.
GWARNING
If the instrument cluster has failed or
malfunctioned, you may not recognize
function restrictions in systems relevant to
safety. The operating safety of your vehicle
may be impaired. There isarisk of an
accident.
Drive on carefully. Have the vehicle checked
ataqualified specialist workshop
immediately.
You must observe the legal requirements for
the country in which you are currently driving
when operating the on-board computer.
The on-board computer only shows messages
or warnings from certain systems in the
multifunction display.You should therefore
make sure your vehicle is operating safely at
all times. Otherwise,avehicle that is not
operating safely may cause an accident.

GWARNING
Opening thehoodwhen theengineis
overheated or when there isafireinthe
enginecompartmentcould expose you to hot
gases or other service products. There is a
risk of injury.
Let an overheated engine cool down before
opening the hood. If there isafire in the
engine compartment, keep the hood closed
and contact the fire department.
!Adisplay message is shown if the coolant
temperature is too high.
If the coolanttemperature is over
248 ‡(120 †), do not continue driving. The
engine will otherwise be damaged.
The coolanttemperature gauge is in the
instrument cluster on the left-hand side
(Ypage 31).
Under normal operatingconditions and with
the specified coolant level, the coolant
temperature may rise to 248‡(120 †).
Tachometer
!Do not drive in the overrevving range, as
this could damage the engine.
The red band in the tachometer indicates the
engine's overrevving range.
The fuel supply is interrupted to protectthe
engine when the red band is reached.

GWARNING
If you deactivate ESP®,ESP®no longer
stabilizes the vehicle. There is an increased
risk of skidding and an accident.
Only deactivate ESP®in the situations
described in the following.
It may be best to deactivate ESP®in the
following situations:
Rwhen using snow chains
Rin deep snow
Ron sand or gravel
Activating/deactivating ESP®on AMG
vehicles (Ypage70).

XStart the engine.
XPress the\norbutton on the
steering wheeltoselect theDriveAssist
menu.
XPress theorbutton to select
ESP.
XPress thebutton.
The current selection is displayed.
XTo activate/deactivate:press the

ESP®is deactivated if the warning lamp
in the instrument cluster lights up
continuously when the engine is running.
If thewarning lamp and the
warning lamp are lit continuously,ESP®is not
available due toamalfunction.

Brake
PRE-SAFE®Brake is only available in vehicles
with DISTRONIC PLUS.

You can determine whether the multifunction
displaypermanently shows your speed or the
outside temperature.

Lights
Setting the brightness of the instrument
cluster lighting and switches
The lighting in the instrumentcluster,inthe
displays and the controls in the vehicle
interior can be adjusted using the
Brightness Display/Switches:function.
XPress the\norbutton on the
steeringwheel to selecttheSett.menu.
XPress theorbutton to select the
Lightssubmenu.
XPressto confirm.
XPress theorbutton to select the
Brightness Display/Switches:
function.
You will see the selected setting.

ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), ESP®(Electronic Stability
Program), BAS (Brake Assist), PRE-SAFE®,the HOLD function and
hill start assist are temporarily unavailable.
BAS PLUS and PRE-SAFE®Brake may also have failed.
In addition, the, andwarning lamps light up in
the instrumentcluster.
ATTENTIONASSIST is deactivated.
Possible causes are:
Rself-diagnosis is not yet complete.
Rthe on-board voltage may be insufficient.
GWARNING
The brake system continues to function normally, but without the
functions listed above. The wheels could therefore lock if you
brake hard, for example.
The steerability and braking characteristics may be severely
affected. The braking distance in an emergency braking situation
can increase.
If ESP®is not operational, ESP®is unable to stabilize the vehicle.
There is an increased risk of skidding and an accident.
XCarefully driveasuitable distance, making slight steering
movements, ataspeed above 12 mph (20 km/h).
If the displaymessage disappears, the functions mentioned
above are available again.
If the displaymessage continues to be displayed:
XDrive on carefully.
XVisitaqualified specialist workshop.
