Always keep the bumper surface near the
radar sensor area clean so that the BSM
system operates normally.

Forward Obstruction Warning (FOW)
Forward Obstruction Warning (FOW) is a system which alerts the driver of a possible
collision using an indicator and warning sound in the instrument cluster\
while the vehicle
is being driven at about 15 km/h or faster (10 mph or faster) and the \
system's radar sensor
determines that your vehicle may hit a vehicle or obstruction ahead.
WARNING
Do not rely completely on the Forward Obstruction Warning (FOW) system and always
drive carefully: Forward Obstruction Warning (FOW) is only designed to reduce damage in the event of
a collision. The ability to detect an obstruction is limited depending on the obstruction,
weather conditions, or traffi c conditions. Therefore, if the accelerator pedal or brake
pedal is mistakenly operated it could result in an accident. Always verify the safety of the
surrounding area and depress the brake pedal or accelerator pedal while keeping a safe
distance from vehicles ahead or on-coming vehicles.
NOTE
 y  The Forward Obstruction Warning (FOW) system operates when all of the following
conditions are met:
 y The ignition is switched ON. y The Forward Obstruction Warning (FOW) system is on. y The vehicle speed is about 15 km/h (10 mph) or faster. y The relative speed between your vehicle and the vehicle or obstruction ahead \
is about
15 km/h (10 mph) — 145 km/h (90 mph).
 y The Forward Obstruction Warning (FOW) system may not operate under the following
conditions:
 y If there is the possibility of hitting only a part of a vehicle or obstruction \
ahead. y If the vehicle is accelerated rapidly and it comes close to a vehicle ah\
ead. y The DSC is malfunctioning. y The vehicle is driven at the same speed as the vehicle ahead. y The accelerator pedal is depressed. y The brake pedal is depressed. y The steering wheel is being operated. y The selector lever is being operated. y The turn signal is being used.

 y Although the objects which activate the system are 4-wheeled vehicles, the radar sensor
could detect the following objects, determine them to be an obstruction,\
and operate the
Forward Obstruction Warning (FOW) system.
 y Objects on the road at the entrance to a curve (including guardrails and snow banks). y A vehicle appears in the opposite lane while cornering or rounding a curve. y When crossing a narrow bridge. y When passing under a low gate or through a tunnel or narrow gate. y When entering an underground parking area. y Metal objects, bumps, or protruding objects on the road. y If you suddenly come close to a vehicle ahead. y When driving in areas where there is high grass or forage. y Two-wheeled vehicles such as motorbikes or bicycles. y Pedestrians or non-metallic objects such as standing trees.
 y When the system operates, the user is notifi ed by the fl ashing warning light and the active
driving display.
 y The indicator light turns on when the system has a malfunction. (page 4-22 )

(FOW) is operating, the warning light
fl ashes.
Collision Warning
If there is the possibility of a collision
with a vehicle or obstruction ahead, the
beep sounds continuously and a warning is
indicated in the display.

Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS)
Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) *
The LDWS notifi es the driver that the vehicle may be deviating from its lane.
The system detects the white or yellow lines on the traffi c lane using the Forward Sensing
Camera (FSC). If it determines that the vehicle may be deviating from \
its lane, it notifi es
the driver by fl ashing the LDWS indicator light (green) and operating the LDWS warning\

sound.
Refer to Forward Sensing Camera on page 4-63 .
Use the LDWS when you drive the vehicle on roads with white or yellow li\
nes.

The warning light fl ashes when the system has a malfunction.

WARNING
Do not use the LDWS under the following conditions: The system may not operate adequately according to the actual driving conditions,
resulting in an accident.

CAUTION
Do not modify the suspension. If the vehicle height or the damping force of the
suspensions is changed, the LDWS may not operate correctly.
NOTE
 y If your vehicle deviates from its traffi c lane, the LDWS operates (warning sound and
indicator light). Steer the vehicle adequately to drive the vehicle to \
the center of the lane.
 y When the turn signal lever is operated for a lane change, the LDWS warni\
ng is
automatically canceled. The LDWS warning becomes operable when the turn \
signal lever
is returned and the system detects the white or yellow lines.
 y If the steering wheel, accelerator pedal, or brake pedal is operated abr\
uptly and the
vehicle moves close to a white or yellow line, the system determines tha\
t the driver is
making a lane change and the LDWS warning is automatically canceled.
 y The LDWS may not operate during the period immediately after the vehicle\
has deviated
from its lane and the LDWS has operated, or the vehicle deviates from its lane repeatedly
within a short period of time.
 y The LDWS does not operate if it does not detect the white or yellow line\
s of the traffi c
lane.

 y Under the following conditions, the LDWS may not be able to detect white\
or yellow lines
correctly and the LDWS may not operate correctly.
 y If an object placed on the dashboard is refl ected in the windshield and picked up by the
camera.
 y Heavy luggage is loaded in the luggage compartment or on the rear seat and the
vehicle is inclined.
 y The tire pressures are not adjusted to the specifi ed pressure. y When the vehicle is driven on the entry and exit to or from the rest area or tollgate of a
highway.
 y The white or yellow lines are less visible because of dirt or paint fl aking. y The vehicle in front of your vehicle is running near a white or yellow line and the line \
is less visible.
 y A white or yellow line is less visible because of bad weather (rain, fog\
, or snow). y The vehicle is driven on a temporary lane or section with a closed lane \
due to
construction.
 y A misleading line is picked up on the road such as a temporary line for construction,
or because of shade, lingering snow, or grooves fi lled with water.
 y The surrounding brightness suddenly changes such as when entering or exiting a
tunnel.
 y The illumination of the headlights is weakened because of dirt or the op\
tical axis is
deviated.
 y The windshield is dirty or foggy. y Back-light is refl ecting from the road surface. y The road surface is wet and shiny after rain, or there are puddles on the road. y The shade of a guardrail parallel to a white or yellow line is on the road. y The width of a lane is excessively narrow or wide. y The road is excessively uneven. y The vehicle is shaken after hitting a road bump. y There are two or more adjacent white or yellow lines. y There are various road markings or lane markings of various shapes near an
intersection.

When The System Operates
1. Press the LDWS switch. The LDWS goes on stand-by and the LDWS
warning light (amber) illuminates.
The lane indication (bordered line) is
indicated in the active driving display
(Type A instrument cluster
*1 ) or the
multi information display (Type B
instrument cluster
*1 ).
*1 To determine which instrument cluster is equipped on your Mazda, Refer to
Meters and Gauges on page 4-12 .

2. Drive the vehicle near the center of the lane and the LDWS indicator light
(green) illuminates in the instrument
cluster when all of the following
conditions are met.
y The vehicle is driven near the center of the lane with the white or yellow line
on the left and right sides, or on either
side.
y The vehicle speed is about 70 km/h (44 mph) or more
y The vehicle is driven on a straight road or road with gentle curves
 The lane indication is indicated in the active driving display (Type
A instrument cluster
*1 ) or the
multi information display (Type B
instrument cluster
*1 ).

Meters and Gauges on page 4-12 .

NOTE
 y  The LDWS remains on stand-by until it
detects white or yellow lines on both the
left and right sides, or on either side.
 y When the system detects a white or
yellow line on one side only, the system
will operate the warning only when the
vehicle deviates to the side the white or
yellow line detected.
