@ Master key with remote control
You can centrally lock and unlock your vehicle
and start the engine with the master key with
remote control. To fold the key out and back
in place, press the re lease button

@ Valet key
The valet key on ly fits the lock in the driver's
door and the ignition lock . If you have to leave
the key with somebody e lse, you are well-ad ­
vi sed to tu rn over the valet key only.
Be aware that the front lid and glove compart­
ment can be opened from inside the vehicle
using the release buttons .
© Emergency key
The emergency key is only for temporary use if
the vehicle key should be lost or misplaced.
Key replacement
If you lose a key, contact your authorized Audi
dealer immed iate ly to have the
Lost key disa­
bled. Be sure to bring all your keys with you .
If a key is lost, you should report it to your in­
surance company .
Registered keys
You can inquire about the number of remote
master keys registered to your vehicle
c:> page 22 . In this way , you can be certain of
obtaining all the remote master keys if you
purchase a used vehicle.
State of master key battery
When a button is pressed, the check light
flashes

come on or flash, the battery is dead and has
to be replaced.

- Do not leave your vehicle unattended
with the key in the ignition lock. Entry by
unauthorized persons could endanger
you or result in t heft or damage the vehi­
cle. A lways lock all doors and take the
key.
- Do not leave children unattended in the
vehicle, especially with access to vehicle keys . Unguarded access to the keys pro­
vides children the opportunity to start the engine and/or activate vehicle sys­
tems such as the power windows etc. Un­ supervised operation of any vehicle sys­
tem by children can result in serious in­
Jury.

- If you open the driver's door with the key
left in the ignit ion lock, a chime will
so und . This is your reminder to remove
the key and lock the door.
- For security reasons, replacement keys
are only available from Audi dealers.

accidentally press the power locking
switch in one of the doors.
- Do not leave children inside the vehicle
unsupervised. In an emergency it would
be impossible to open the doors from
the outside without the key.
@ Tips
- The dr iver's door can be locked and un­
locked with the key if the power locking
system fails. The passenger's door can be locked manually
o page 33.
- In the event of a crash with airbag de­
ployment all locked doors will be auto­
matically unlocked to give access to the
vehicle occupants from the outside.
- The anti-theft alarm system cannot be
activated if the power locking system is
not activated.
- You are well advised not to keep valua­
bles inside an unattended vehicle, visible
or not . Even a properly locked vehicle
cannot provide the security of a safe!

PANIC Button
.,. Push the red button @to activate the panic
function . The horn sounds and the turn sig­
nals flash.
.. Push the button @again to deact ivate the
pan ic function.
The remote controls allows you to:
- lock or unlock the vehicle
- selectively un lock the front lid.
The turn signals will flash briefly whenever
you lock or unlock the vehicle. Also, the interi­
or light will come on or go off whenever you
open or close the driver's door .
The transmitter and battery are located in the
head of the remote control. The receiver is lo­
cated inside the vehicle. The maximum effec­
tive range depends on several things . Remem­
ber, if the battery is weak, the effective range
decreases.
The remote-contro l key contains a fo ld-out
key that you can use to manually lock or un­
lock the vehicle and to start the engine.
If you need to replace the remote control, or if
you need to have it repaired, you must see
your authorized Audi dea ler . Only then can
you use the key again.

• Press the front lid closed carefully using
both hands unti l it latches audibly¢ &,.
A WARNING
A front lid that is not comp lete ly latched
could fly up and block your view while driv­
ing.
- When you close the front lid, check it to
make sure the safety catch has properly
engaged. The lid should be flush with the
surround ing vehicle body parts.
- If you not ice wh ile driving that the lid is
not secured properly, stop at once and
close it.
- Never leave your vehicle unattended es­
pecially with the front lid left open. A
child could c rawl into the luggage com­
par tment and pull the lid s hut, becoming
tr apped and unable to get out. To re duce
the risk of personal i njury, never let chil­
dren p lay in or around your vehicle . Al ­
ways keep the front lid as we ll as the ve­
hicle doors closed when not in use.

Ma ke s ure no objects are protruding above
t he edge o f the luggage compartment.
Otherwise, the front lid could be dam­
aged.
(D Tips
I f the front lid is open or not p roperly
locked w hen the ignit ion is tu rned on, the
door and front lid warning appea rs in the
instrument cluster disp lay.
Emergency release for front lid
If the front lid cannot be opened, an emer­
gency release is provided .

Anti-theft alarm
system
The anti-theft alarm triggers an alarm if any­
one attempts to break into the vehicle .

The anti -theft alarm system triggers an audi­
ble a larm and turns on the emerge ncy flasher
if an unauthorize d interference with the vehi­
cle is sensed by the system .
How is the anti-theft alarm system
switched on?
T he anti -theft alarm system is switched on
when you lock the driver's door manua lly us-
ing the fo ld-out key, or when you use the re­
mote control. The system is activated approxi­
mately 30 seconds after the vehicle is locked . .,,_

To p revent dama ge to the c onvertible top:
- do not store any objects in the converti­
ble top storage bay .
- make sure there is enough spa ce above
the vehicle when opening or closing the
convertible top.
@ Tips
- When the indicato r lamp N blinks,
the re is a system malfunc tion ¢
page 15 .
-The one- touch openi ng f unction is not
available when the vehicle is traveling
below 4 mph (6 km/h) or above 31 mp h
(SO km/ h). If this is the case, a warning
tone w ill sound and a message will ap­
pear in the instrument cluster

Error message in the instrument cluster
display
An error message appears
if the convertible
top cannot open or close .
Several conditions must be met for the con­
vertible top to ope n or close automatically .
An error message in the inst rument cluster
d isp lay ind icates if one of the condit ions is not
met or there is a malfunction.
Soft top : Please clo se engine lid!
The engine compar tment lid mus t be closed
when opening or closing the convertible top .
T his message appears in the instrument clus­
ter d isp lay if the engine compartment lid is
not closed .
Soft top: Cannot be u sed!
This error message appears if the convertib le
top cannot open or close because of safety
reasons or if there is a ma lfunct ion. The fol­
low ing causes are possible:
- The veh icle i s tra veling too fast : Converti­
ble top operation is deactivated for safety
reasons if the veh icle is t raveling too fast. A
message w ill appear . Reduce the vehicle speed and pu
ll or press the sw itch again to
open or close the convertible top.
- The battery voltage i s too low: The conver­
tible top cannot open or close if the battery
voltage is too low. This ens ures the re will be
enough battery vo ltage left to start the ve­
hicle . The convertible top can be operated
aga in after the engi ne is started.
- Overload protect ion i s active: Operating the
convert ible top continuously for a long peri­
od of time p laces stress on the hydraulic
un it . Overload protect io n is act ivated to pre­
vent damage to the syst em . This protective
fu nction preve nts the convertible top from
open ing or clo se fo r approximate ly 15 to 30
m inu tes.

-Malfunction: Failure of sys tem components
is one possib le cause fo r malfunction . If this
happens, you can a lso operate the converti­
b le top by hand

- The exte rior temperature i s too low:
The
convertible top will not open in tempera­
tures below (5 °F) (-15 QC) .
Soft top not secure
If the co nve rtib le top is not compl etel y open
o r closed and the vehicle is t raveling too fast,
the e rror message above appears and a warn ­
ing tone sounds. Reduce the vehicle speed
and pull or press the switch again to open or close the convert ible top.
A WARNING ..__
Neve r drive when the convertible top is not
l ocked correctly . The wind from driving
could cause the co nvertib le top to open.
This can resu lt in i njuries and damage to
the veh icle.

Wind deflector
The wind deflector reduces turbulence in the
passenger compartment and makes driving
more comfortable.

The wind deflector is located in the luggage
compartment . Insta lling it from the sid e of
the vehicle that is farthest from traffic is rec­
ommended for safety reasons . Fo llow the in·
stallat ion instructions provided in the storage
bag .
Installing /removing the wind deflector
.. To install the wind deflector, slide the re-
taining pin ® into the mount ®~

The wind deflector is secure when it clicks
into place and the red marks on both but­
tons are no longer visible .
.. To remove the wind deflector , press both
bu ttons © and pull the deflector upward.
Storing the wind deflector
.. Slide the wind deflector into the storage bag
with the retaining pins facing dow nward .

A WARNING
-Do not use the wind deflector to secure
cargo or other objects . Th is could result
in injury.
- Be careful of traffic when installing the
wind deflector.
(D Note
To prevent damage to the vehicle paint, do not lean on the vehicle when installing the
wind deflector . Objects such as belt buck­
les could scratch the surface of the paint .
(D Tips
-Keeping both side windows raised pro­
vides the best wind protection.
- To prevent mildew, do not store the wind
deflector when it is damp.

The rear window can be extended s light ly

movement inside the vehicle and increase

when extending or retracting the rear
window . It could cause injury by pinch­
ing .

-Keeping all of the w indows raised pro­
v ides the best wind protection . - The vehicle must be stationary to bring
the rear window into the cleaning posi­
tion . The rear window will retract once
you begin dr iv ing .
Convertible top
emergency operation
General information
The convertible top can be closed by hand if
there is a malfunction .
First check if overload protection is active
¢ page 38. If this is the case, the convertible
top wi ll operate again afte r a short de lay. Oth­
erwise the fo llowing steps must be completed
before closing the convertib le top:
.. Activate the pa rking brake .
.. Open the side w indows, if necessary.
.. Remove the key from the ignition.
E mergency loc king is not intended for long­
term use or long d rives . The convertible top
will not be completely waterproof after using
the emergency locking procedure because the
seals wi ll not be seated correctly. Only close
the convertible top manually in an emergency .
Please see an authorized Audi R8 dealer to
have the cause of the malfunction corrected .
A WARNING
-The ignition must be sw itched off d uring
the entire closing p rocedu re.
- When pos itioning the convertible top,
avoid contact with the supports or other
movi ng parts. Otherwise you could p inch
your hands.
- Never drive when the convert ible top is
not locked correctly . The wind from d riv­
ing could cause the convertible top to
open . This can resu lt in injuries and dam­
age to the vehicle.
(D Tips
Have a second person assist when clos ing
the convert ible top. Opening the storage
bay lid and positioning the convertible top
i s easier when a second person is assisting.

.. Pull the convertible top all the way out in
the direction indicated @. Position the fins
upward at the same t ime.
.. Press the convertib le top as far forward to­
ward the windshield frame as possible

on the opposite side of the vehicle and per­
form the same steps.

onto the windsh iel d frame, make s ure

Step 6: Secure the convertible top

The convertible top must be under tension to
secure it to the windshie ld frame. The wheel
wrench, dr iver and bolts from the vehicle tool
kit a re required for this.

That person should stand on the opposite side
of the vehicle and perform the same steps .

-When pressing the convertible top for­
ward, make sure the locking pins are
seated in the latch o n the windshield
frame and not on the frame itself.
- When press ing the convert ible top for­
ward, make sure the locking pins are
seated exactly i n the latch on t he wind­
shield frame and not on the frame itself.

the fins to the body. Tightening the bolts is much easier if a second person presses the
fins down .

Make sure the fins lie on the body. Other -
wise the convert ible top will not lock se­
cure ly and it could open while driv ing. This

vehicle.
