34 Driver in formation d isplay
A WARNING -
Your vehicle must not be towed in the
event of a malfunction in the electron ic
steering column lock because it cannot be
steered due to the locked steering. If it is
t owed w ith the stee ring locked, there is
the risk of an accident.
~ Ignition lock malfunction
A malfunction in the ignition lock must be re­
paired immediately.
If the . symbo l in the d isplay blinks, there is
a malf unct ion in the electronic ignition lock.
A n addit ional driver message ca n also be d is­
p layed by pressing the
! CHECK I button:

• Do not turn the eng ine off.
• Drive immediate ly to an authorized Audi
dealer to have the ma lfunction corrected.
If there is a ma lfunction in the e lectronic igni­
tion lock, the ign ition cannot be turned off.
Drive immediately to an a uthorized Audi dea l­
e r to have the cause of the ma lfunction co r­
rected .
On vehicles w ith Convenience key*, the engine
should not be sw itched
off using the ! STOP !
button because the eng ine cannot be started
aga in after the ignition is switched
off .

A yellow symbol means WARNING.

Yellow symbols indicate a priority 2 ma lfunc­
tion -Warning! When a yellow warning symbol appears,
one
warning tone sounds. A driver message ap­
pears as well to exp lain the ma lfunction in
more detail. The driver warning goes out after
about 5 seconds, but it ca n be brought up
again at any time by press ing the
! CHECK I but ­
ton .
Check the displayed function as soon as possi­
ble. If
more than one priority 2 ma lfunction is
detected, all symbols will appear one after
the o ther for about 2 seconds .

-Prior to using a car wash, the windshield
wiper system must be switched
off (lever
in position 0). This helps to prevent unin­
tentional switching on and damage to
the windshield wiper system .
@ Tips
-The windshield wipers are switched off
when the ignition is turned off. Activate
the windshield wipers after the ignition is switched back on by moving the wind­
shield wiper lever to any position.
- Worn or dirty windshield wiper blades
cause smearing which can affect the op­
eration of the rain sensor. Check the con­
dition of your windshield wiper blades
regularly.
- The rain sensor is part of the interval
wiping system. Turning
off the ignition
will also deactivate the rain sensor. To re­
activate the sensor, switch
off the inter­
val wiping function, then switch it back
on again.
- Make sure the washer fluid reservoir in
the engine compartment is topped
off
before going on a long trip. Look up
c:;, page 272 for checking and filling the
washer container.
Rear window wiper
The wiper lever is also used to operate the
rear window wiper and the automatic wiper/
washer function.

The rear window wiper and the automatic wip­
er/washer functions are activated as follows:

Intermittent wiping
.,. Push the wiper lever forward to the first po­
sition @

Automatic wiper/washer function
.,. Push the wiper lever forward to the second
stop,
position (J) , and hold it there for as
long as you want the rear wiper/washer to
operate.
.,. Release the lever again . the wiper will keep
running for approx. four seconds.
Switching intermittent wiper action off
.,. Pull the lever all the way back to the original
position.
As soon as the reverse gear is engaged and
the front wipers are turned on and operating
at the same time, the rear wiper also turns on
automatically.
A WARNING
Wiper blades are crucial for safe driving!
Only in good condition are they able to
clear the windows properly to provide un­ restricted visibility. Worn or frayed wiper
blades are a safety hazard!

Replacing windshield wiper blades
(D Note
In freezing or near freezing conditions:
- Always check that the wiper blades are
not frozen to the glass before you turn
the wiper on. Loosen a wiper blade which
is frozen in place before operating the
wiper to prevent damage to the wiper
blade or the wiper motor.
- Do not use the wiper to clear a frosted
window . Using the wipers as a conven­
ient ice scraper will destroy the wiper
blades.

Engine oil specifications
The engine in your Audi needs the right kind
of oil.
The engine in your Audi is a sophisticated
powerplant that was built to exacting spec ifi­
cations . Th is eng ine needs the right k ind of
engine oil that meets specifications regardi ng
quality and viscosity so that it can run
smooth ly and reliab ly. Choosing the right o il
and changing oil within the time and mileage
intervals printed in your vehicle's Warranty
&
Maintenance booklet matters a lot more to­
day than it did years ago . Audi has deve loped
a spec ia l quality standard for engine oil that
will help assure that your vehicle's engine w ill
get the lubrication it needs for proper opera­
tion.
Modern engine lubrication has taken a quan ­
tum leap in the last few years. Many synthetic

Battery replacement
The new battery must have the same specifi­
cations and dimensions as the original equip­
ment battery.
Intelligen t energy management in your veh i­
cle is respons ible for d istributing the e lectr i­
cal en ergy throughout your vehicle

ment system w ill keep the eng ine battery
cha rged better then vehicles w ithout this sys­
tem . To make sure the additional e lectrica l en ­
ergy is availab le once again after you have
changed the battery, we recommend that you install batteries of the same type and manu­
facture only (the same as those installed at
the time your vehicle was delivered). Specifi­
cations are listed on the battery hous ing . Your
author ized dealer must code the battery in
the ene rgy management system to enable you
to use the energy management f unct ions co r­
rectly after replac ing the battery.
If it is not poss ible to use a battery of this
type, the new battery must have the same ca­
pac ity, voltage (12 volts), amperage , con­
struction and plug seal ing.
When insta lling the battery, make sure the ig­
n it ion and all e lectr ica l consumers a re turned
off.

Make sure the venti lation hose on the s ide
of the battery is connected, otherwise
fumes or battery ac id can leak o ut.

Because of the problem of proper d isposa l
of a battery, we recommend your autho r­
i z ed Audi dealer change the ba tte ry for
you. Bat teries con tain s ulfu ric ac id and
lead and m ust always be disposed of prop ­
erly in compliance with all environmental
reg ulations. Disposing of vehicle batteries
improper ly is very dangerous to the envi­
ronment.
