-When you leave your vehicle - even if on­
ly briefly - always take the ignit ion key
with you. This applies particularly when children remain in the vehicle. Otherwise
the children could start the engine or op­
erate electrical equipment (e.g. power
windows). The power windows are func­
tional until the driver's door or passeng­
er's doo r has been opened.
- Be careful when closing the w indows.
Check to see that no one is in the way, or
serio us injury could result!
- When locking the vehicle from outside,
the vehicle must be unoccupied since the
windows can no longer be opened in an
emergency .

-When you open the doors, the windows
automatically lower abo ut 10 mm.
- When the window in the driver's or pas­
senger's door is complete ly open, it will
raise approximately 25 mm when the
door is opened. The window will lower
again when you close the door.
- After the ignition has been switched off,
the windows can sti ll be opened or
closed for about 10 minutes. The power
windows are not switched off until the
dr iver's door or passenger's door has
been opened .
What to do after a malfunction
The one-touch open and close function must
be reactivated if the battery has been discon­
nected.

The reversible luggage compartment covering
should be used when transporting dirty or
wet objects.

Press the buttons to turn the functions on or
off. Use the dials to adjust the temperature,
the blower speed and the air distribution. The
LED in a button will light up when the func­
tion is switched on. The settings are shown in
the climate control display and are also shown in the MMI display for a few seconds . The driv­
er and front passenger sett ings can be adjust­
ing separately.

IOFF j Switching the climate control
system on/off
The I O FFI button switches the climate control
system on or off .
It also switches on when you
turn the dia l or press any button. Airflow from outside is blocked when the
climate control
system is switched off .
You can activate the residual heat function
whe n the ignition is off by pressing and hold­
ing the ~ button. The residua l heat from the
coolant is used to heat the vehicle interior .
The residual heat function switches off auto­
matically after about 30 minutes.
!ACI Switching cooling mode on/off
T he air is not coo led and humidity is not re­
moved when cooling mode is switched off.
T his can cause fog on the windows. Cooling
mode switches off automatically when the
outside temperature is be low zero .
1- 1 Switching recirculation mode on/off
In recircu lation mode, the air inside the vehi ­
cle is circu lated and filtered. This prevents the
unfiltered air outside the vehicle from enter­
ing the vehicle interior . We recommend
switching recirculation mode on when driving
through a tunnel or when sitting in traffic ¢ .&, .

Starting/stopping the engine

.. Slow the vehicle to a stop using the brake
and keep pressing the brake pedal. The en­
gine w ill switch off. The
[IJ indic ator light
appears in the information line in the instru­
ment cluster display.
.. When you take your foot off the brake ped­
al, the engine restarts. The indicator light
turns off.
Additional information
The engine wi ll switch off in the P, D, N and S
positions as well as in manua l mode . In the P
position, the engine wi ll also remain off if you
take your foot off the brake pedal. The engine
starts again when you select another se lector
lever position and take your foot off the brake
pedal.
If you select the R pos ition during a Stop
phase, the engine will start again.
Shift from D to P quickly to prevent the engine
from start ing unintentionally when shifting
through R.
You can determine for yourself if the engine
will stop or not by reducing or increasing the
amount of force you use to press the brake
pedal. For example, if you only lightly press
on the brake pedal in stop-and and-go traffic
or when turni ng, the engine will not switch off
when the vehicle is stationa ry . As soon as you
press the brake down harder, the engine will
switch off.
General information
Applies to vehicles: with Start -Stop-System
The standard Start-Stop-mode can be cancel­
led for different system-related reasons.

Engine will not switch off
Before each stop phase, the system checks if
certain conditions have been met. For exam­
ple, the eng ine will
not be switched off in the
following situations :
- The engine has not reached the minimum
requ ired temperature for Start-Stop-mode.
- The interior temperat ure se lected by the A/C
system has not been reached.
- The outside temperatu re is extremely high/
low .
- The windshield is being defrosted

- The parking system* is switched on.
- The battery charge level is too low.
- The steering wheel is sharply turned or
t here is a steering movement.
- After engaging the reverse gear.
- On sharp incl ines.

Engine automatically restarts
T he stop phase is interrupted in the following
situations, for example . The engine restarts
without any action by the driver .
- The interior tempera ture varies from the
temperature selected in the A/C system .

even w ith Advanced A irbags, can be seri­
ous ly injured or even killed when an a ir­
bag inflates .
- Never let a child stand or knee l on any
seat, for examp le the front seat.
- Never let a child ride in the cargo area of your vehicle .
- Always remember that a ch ild lean ing
forward, sitt ing s ideways or out of posi­
t ion in any way during an acc ident can be
st ruck by a deploying airbag . This will re­
sult in serious personal injury o r dea th .
- If you must install a booster seat on the

Installing a child safety
seat
Securing a child safety seat using a
safety belt
Safety bel ts for the rear sea ts and the front
passenger can be locked with the conver tible
locking retractor to properly secure child
safety seats .
The safety belts emergency locking retractors
for the rear seats safety belts and for the
front passenge r's seat safety belt have a co n­
ve rtible locking retracto r fo r child restra ints . T
he safety belt m ust be locked so that be lt
web bing cannot unree l. The retractor can be
activated to lock the sa fety belt and prevent
the safety belt webbing from loosening up
duri ng norma l dr iving . A chi ld safety seat can
o n ly be prope rly insta lled when t he safety belt
i s loc ked so that the ch ild and child safety
sea t w ill stay in place .
Always remember: Even tho ugh your vehicle is
equipped with an Advanced Airbag system , all
c h ildren, especially thos e 12 years and young­
er, sho uld alw ays r ide in the back seat prope r­
l y restra ined fo r the ir age and size.

- Always make s ure that the sa fe ty bel t re­

- If the backrest is not securely la tched,
the child and the child res traint will be

rest and will strike part s of t he vehi cle
interior. The child can be seriously in­
jured or killed.

seats or in fant ca rrie rs on the front pas ­
sen ger seat . A child will be serious ly in ­
jured and can be killed when the passen­ ge r airbag in flates.
- The inflating air bag will h it the c hild
safety seat or infant carrier with great
force and will smash the child safety seat ..,.

A tether is a straight or V-shaped strap that attaches the top part o f a child restraint to
specia l anchorage points in the veh icle.
The purpose of t he tether is to reduce the for­
ward movemen t of the ch ild restra int in a
crash, in order to help reduce the risk of head
injury that could be caused by striking the ve ­
hicle interior.
F orward facing child rest ra ints manufactured
after September 1, 1999, are required by U.S.
federal regulations to comply with new child
head movement performance requirements .
These new performance requirements make a
tether necessary on most new child safety
seats.
A WARNING
Improper insta llation of chi ld restraints
w ill increase the risk of inju ry and death in
a crash.
- Always follow the instructions prov ided
by the manufacturer of the ch ild re­
st rain t you intend to install in your Audi.
- Improper use of ch ild restra int anchors
(including tether anchors) can lead to in­
jury in a co llision. The anchors are de­
signed to w ithstand on ly those loads im ­
posed by corre ctly fitted ch ild restraints. -
Never mount two child restraint systems
on one LATCH lower anchor point.
- Never attach two child restraint systems
to one tether strap or tether anchorage.
- Never attach a tether strap to a tie-down
hook in the luggage compa rtment .
- Never use child restraint tether ancho ­
rages to secure safety belts or other
kinds o f occupant restraints.
- Never secure or attach any luggage or
other items to the LATCH lower ancho­
rages or to the tether anchors.
- If you must install a rearward fac ing
child safety seat on the front passenger
seat because of exceptiona l circumstan­
ces and t he

light does not come o n and stay on, im­
mediately install the rear-fac ing ch ild
safety seat in a rear seating position and
have the airbag system i nspe cted by your

Because of the problem of proper disposal
of brake fluid as we ll as the special tools
required and the necessary expertise, we recommend that you have the brake fluid
changed by your author ized Audi dealer.
Battery
General information
Under normal operating conditions, the bat­
tery in your Audi does not need any mainte­
nance. With
high outside temperatures or
long daily drives we recommend that you have
the electro lyte level checked by a service fa­
cility . The electrolyte level should also be
checked each time the battery is charged
<=:> page 240.
Have the battery checked when you take your
vehicle in for service . You are well adv ised to
replace a battery that is older than 5 years .
With certain types of airbag deployment, the battery is disconnected from the vehicle elec­
tr ical system for safety reasons

Disconnecting the battery terminals
Some vehicle functions (power window regu­
lators, for example) are lost if the battery ter­
minals are disconnected. These functions have
to be relearned after the battery terminals are
connected again. To prevent this , the battery
should only be disconnected from the vehicle
e lectrica l system when absolutely necessary
for repairs.
Vehicles not driven for long periods
If you do not drive your vehicle over a period
of severa l days or weeks, electrical compo­
nents are gradually cut back or switched off.
This reduces energy consumption and main­
tains starting capability over a longer period
c::> page 202. Some of the convenience func­
tions may not operate, such as the interior
lights or power seat adjustment. The conven- ience
functions will be available again when
you switch on the ignition and start the en­ gine.
Winter operation
During the winter months, battery capac ity
tends to decrease as temperatures drop. This
is because more power is a lso consumed whi le
starting, and the headlights, rear window de­
fogger, etc., are used more often.
Avoid unnecessary power consumption, par­
ticularly in city traffic or when traveling only
short distances. Let your authorized Audi
deale r check the capacity of the vehicle bat ­
tery before winter sets in

charged battery will no t only prevent star ting
problems when the weather is cold, but will
also last longer .
@ Tips
If your vehicle is left standing for several
weeks at extremely low temperatures, the
vehicle battery should be removed and
stored where it w ill not freeze. This will
prevent it from be ing damaged and having
to be replaced .
Working on the battery
Be especially careful when working on or near
the battery.
The battery is located in the luggage compart­
ment under the floor . Before you check any­
thing in the luggage compartment,
read and
heed all WARNINGS

Always heed the safety warnings , when work­
ing on the vehicle battery or the vehicle elec­
trical system to prevent injury.

important when working on the battery:
