A WARNING
Improperly installed child safety seats in­
crease the risk of ser ious personal injury
and death in a collision .
- Never unfasten the safety belt to deacti­
vate the convert ible lock ing retractor for
child rest raints while the veh icle is mov­

Installing a child restraint with LATCH
lower anchorages
Whenever you install a child restraint always
follow the child restraint manufacturer's in­
structions.

Mou nting
~ Make sure the seatback of the rear seat
bench is in the upright position and securely
latched in place.
~ Attach both hook-on connectors with the
spring catch release on the child safety seat
onto the LATC H lower anchorage so that the
connectors lock into p lace

~Pullon the connector attachments to make
s u re they are properly attached to the LATCH
lower anchorage.
~ Pull straps tight following the child restraint
manufacturer's instructions.
Releasing
~ Loosen the te nsion on the straps following
the chi ld restraint manufacturer's instr uc­
tions.
~ Depress the spring catches to re lease the
anchorage hooks from the lower anchorag­
es.
Remember: Use tether straps to help keep the
child restraint firmly in p lace.

- These anchors were deve loped only for
child safety seats using the "LATCH" sys­
tem.
- Never attach other chi ld safety seats,
belts or other objects to these anchors.
- Always make sure that you hear a click
when latch ing the seat in p lace. If you do
not hear a click the seat is not secure and
could fly forward and hit the interior of
the vehicle, or be ejected from the veh i­
cle .

Using tether straps on rearward-facing
child restraints
-
Currently, few rearward-facing chi ld res traint
systems come w ith a tether . Please read and
heed the ch ild restraint system ma nufactur­
er's instr uctions carefully to dete rmine how to
proper ly install the tether.
A WARNING
-
A child in a rearward-fac ing chi ld safety
seat installed on the front passenger seat
will be ser iously injured and can be killed if
the front airbag inflates - even with an Ad­
vanced Airbag System .
- The inflating airbag will h it the ch ild
safety seat or i nfant carrier with great
force and will smash the child safety seat

ESC includes and/or works together with the
anti-lock brake system (ABS), brake assist sys ­
tem, anti-slip regulation (ASR) , e lectronic dif­
ferential lock (EDL), dynamic steering" and
e lectronic interaxle differentia l lock* /selective
wheel torque control* . ESC is switched on all

Anti -lock braking system (ABS)
ABS prevents the wheels from locking up
when braki ng. The veh icle can still be steered
even d uring h ard br aking. Apply ste ady p res ­
sure to the brake pedal. Do no t pump the ped­
a l. A pulsing in the brake peda l indicates t hat
the system is he lping yo u to b rake the vehicle .
Brake assist system
The brake assis t system can decrease b ra ki ng
d ista nce. It incre ases braking power w hen the
d river p resses the brake pedal q uic kl y in eme r­
gency situations . You must p ress and hold the
b rake peda l until the situation is over. In
vehicles w ith adapt ive cru ise contro l", the
brake assist system is more sensit ive if the
d ista nce detected to t he vehicle a head is too
small.
Anti-slip regulation (ASR)
ASR reduces engine power when the drive
wheels begin to spin and adapts the fo rce to
the road condit ions. This makes it eas ier to
start , accelerate and drive up hills.
Electronic differenti al lock (EDL )
The ED L brakes wheels that are spinn ing and
transfers the drive power to the other drive
wheel or whee ls if t he vehicle is equipped with
all-w heel drive*. This function is available up
to about 60 mph (100 km/h).
In extreme cases, EDL automat ica lly switches
off to help keep the bra ke on the braked whee l
from overheating. EDL wi ll switch on again au-tomat
ica lly when conditions have ret urned to
no rma l.
Dynamic steering*
On vehicles wi th dynam ic steering*, ESC he lps
st abi liz e the steer ing in cr itical situ ations.
Electronic interaxle differential lock* /
selective wheel torque control*
T he elec troni c int eraxle differentia l lock (front
whee l dr ive) o r th e se lec tive whee l torque
control (all-whee l dr ive) oper ates when dr iv ­
ing t hro ugh curves. The front wheel on the in ­
side of the c urve or both whee ls on the inside
of the c urve are b raked se lectively as needed.
This m inimizes sliding in the front wheels and
allows for more precise driving through
curves . The applicable system may not acti­
vate when dr iving in wet o r snowy cond itions.
A WARNING
- ESC, ABS, ASR, EDL dynam ic steering*

cannot ove rcome the laws of physics .
This is especially important on sli ppery
or wet roads.
If the systems beg in acting
to stabilize your veh icle, yo u should im­
mediately change your speed to match
the road and traffic conditions . Do not
let the increased safety prov ided by
these systems tempt you to take r isks.
Doing so will increase the risk of a loss of
veh icle cont ro l, col lision and ser ious pe r­
sonal injur ies.
- Always ada pt your speed to road, traffi c
a nd wea ther conditions. The r isk of los-
ing con trol of the vehicle i ncreases when
d riving too fast, es pec ia lly through
curves and o n slippe ry or wet roads, an d
when dr iv ing too close to vehicles up
ahead. ESC, ABS, the brake ass ist sys­

Trailer towing tips
Important to know
Your vehicle hand les different ly w hen tow ing
a tr ailer because of the addit ional weight and
different weight distribution . Safety, perform­
ance and economy wi ll greatly depend on how
carefully you load your trailer and operate
your rig.
Before you actually tow your trailer, practice
turning, stopp ing and backing up in an area
away from traffic. Keep practicing until you have become comp letely familiar with the way
your veh icle-trailer combination behaves and
responds.
Backing up is difficult and requires practice.
Backing up with a trai ler genera lly requires
steering action opposite to that when backing
up your veh icle without a trailer.
Maintain a greater distance between your ve­
hicle and the one in front of you . You will need
more room to stop. To compensate for the
trailer, you will need a larger than normal
turning radius .
When passing, remember that you cannot ac­
celerate as fast as you normally would be­
cause of the added load. Make sure you have
enough room to pass . After passing, allow
plenty of room for your tra iler before chang­
in g lanes again.
Avoid jerky starts, sharp turns or rapid lane
changes.

- Do not tow a tra iler dur ing the break-in
period of your vehicle.
- If you tow a trailer, your A udi may re­
quire more frequent maintenance due to
the extra load

Parking on a slope
Do not park on a slope with a trailer . If it can­
not be avoided, do so only after doing the fol­ lowing :
When parking:
.. App ly the foot brake.
.. Have someone place chocks under both the
veh icle and the trailer wheels .
.,. With chocks in place, slowly release the
brakes until the wheel chocks absorb the
load.
.. Turn the whee ls towards the curb.
.. App ly the parking brake.
.. Move the selector lever to P.
When restarting after parking:
.. App ly the foot brake .
.. Start the engine.
.. Move the selector lever to D/S .
.. Release the parking brake and s lowly pull
out and away from the wheel chocks .
.. Stop and have someone retrieve the wheel
chocks .
(D Tips
If you move the selector lever of the auto ­
matic transmission to P before applying
the parking brake and before blocking the
whee ls, you may have to use more force
later to move the lever out of the P posi­
tion.

@ Tips
It may take longer to start the engine
when the outside temperature is very cold.
If possible, use winterized fuel if tempera­
tures are below freezing.
Gasoline additives
A major concern among many auto manufac­
turers is carbon deposit build-up caused by
the type of gasoline you use.
Although gasoline grades differ from one manufacturer to another, they have certain
things in common. All gasoline grades contain
substances that can cause deposits to collect
on vital engine parts, such as fuel injectors
and intake valves. Although most gasoline
brands include additives to keep engine and
fuel systems clean, they are not equally effec­
tive.
Aud i recommends using TOP TIER Detergent
Gasoline. For more information on TOP TIE R

Afte r an extended pe riod of using inadequate
fuels, built-up carbon deposits can rob your
engine of peak performance.

- Damage or malfunction due to poor fuel
quality is not covered by the Audi New
Vehicle Limited Warranty.
- Do not add aftermarket fuel additive
products to your fuel tank.
Fuel tank
Fuel filler neck
The fuel filler neck is located on the r ight rear
side panel behind the fuel filler flap.
If the power locking system should fail, you
can sti ll open the flap manually - for detailed
instructions see
c:> page 205.

The label on the inside of the fuel fi lier f lap
te lls you the correct fue l for your vehicle. For
more information about fuel specifications,
see
c:> page 201.
Your vehicle fue l tank has an on -board refue l­
ling vapor recovery system. This feature helps
to prevent fuel vapors from escaping from the
tank and polluting the environment while you
refuel your vehicle. In order to fill the tank
proper ly while protecting the environment,
please follow this refueling procedure careful­
ly.
_&. WARNING
Under normal operating conditions, never
carry additional fuel containers in your car.
Gas canisters and other containers used to
transport fuel can be dangerous. Such con­
tainers, fu ll or empty, may leak and could
cause a fire in a collision. If you must
transport fuel to use for your lawn mower,
snow blower, etc., be very careful and al­
ways observe local and state laws regard­
ing the use, transportation and storage of
such fuel containers. Make certain the con­
tainer meets industry standards (ANSI/
ASTM F852 - 86).

Never drive your veh icle until the fuel tank
i s completely empty. The irregu la r supply
of fue l can cause misfiring. Gasoline cou ld
enter the exhaust system and damage the
catalytic converter.

~ Select a medium refuelling ra te so that the
nozzle swi tches off a utomatica lly when the
tank is full.
Putting the fuel cap back on
~ After filling your tank , tw ist the fuel cap
clockwise as far as it w ill go .
~ Close the fuel fil le r flap. T
o avoid fuel spill ing or evaporating from the
fuel tank always close fuel cap properly and
completely .
A WARNING
-Im proper refueling or handling of fuel can
cause fire, explosion and severe burns.
- Fue l is highly flammable and can cause
severe burns and other injur ies.
- Failure to shut the engine off while refu­
eling and/or to insert the pump noz zle
fully into the fuel filler neck could cause fuel to spray out of filler neck or to over ­
f low . Fuel spray and overflowing fuel can
cause a fire .
- Never use a cellular telephone while re ­
fueling . The electromagnet ic rad iat io n
can cause sparks that can ignite fuel va­
pors a nd cause a fire .
- Never get back into your vehicle wh ile re­
fue ling.
If in exceptional circumstances
you mus t get back in your vehi cle while
ref ueling, make ce rtain that you close
the door and touch meta l to discharge
static electricity before touching the fill ­
er nozzle again . Static e lectr icity can
cause sparks that can ignite fuel vapors re leased during refueling .
- Never smoke or have an open flame any­
where in or near your veh icle when refu­
eling or filling a portable fue l conta iner .
- For your safety, we strongly recommend
that you do not travel with a portable
fue l conta iner in your vehicle . The con­
tainer, fu ll o r empty may leak and could
cause a fire, especially in a crash .
- If, u nder exceptional c ircumstances, you
must transport a portable fuel conta iner,
p lease observe t he follow ing:
- Never fill a portable f uel container
whi le it is anywhere in or on the vehicle
(for example, in the luggage compart­
ment, or on the trunk). Static electrici­
ty can build up while filling and can ig­
ni te f uel vapors causing a fire .
- Always place a portab le fue l conta iner
on the ground before fi lling.

-Always keep the f iller nozzle complete­
ly inside the portable conta iner before
and during filling.
- If filling a portable container made of
metal, the filler nozz le must always be
in contact with the container. Th is w ill
he lp prevent static electricity from dis­
charging and cause a fire .
- Never spi ll fuel inside the vehicle or
luggage compartment. Fuel vapors are
h ighly f lammable .
- Always observe local and state/provin­ cial laws regarding the use, storage
and tra nsporta tion of fuel containers.
- Make certa in the fuel container meets
industry standards (ANSI
I ASTM
F852-86).

If any fuel has spilled onto the car, it
should be removed immediate ly to prevent
damage to the paint.
@ For the sake of the environment
As soon as the correctly operated nozzle
sw itches off automatically for the fi rs t
time, the tank is full. Do not try to add
more fue l because fuel may spill out. In
add it ion, the expans io n space in the fuel
t ank will be fi lled -ca using the fue l to
overflow when it becomes warm and pol ­
lute the env ironment.
@ Tips
- Runn ing yo ur engine while re fuelling
may cause vapors to escape or even
cause fue l to spill out of the tank . This
would then shut off the fuel nozzle be­
fo re the tank is fu ll.
- Do not refuel your vehicle w ith the igni ­
tion t urned on. The fuel gauge may oth­
erwise not ind icate the correct fue l level
after refuelling.
- The fuel filler flap of your vehicle is not locked when you lock the vehicle from
the i nside.

Working in the engine compartment
Be especially ca reful whenever you work in
the engine compartment.
Whenever you must perform any work in the
engine compartment, for example checking
and filling different fluid s, there is a ri sk of
injury , burns and accidents . To prevent per­
sonal injury always observe the following
