SYMBOLSSome car components have coloured
labels whose symbols indicate
precautions to be observed when using
this component. Under the bonnet
there is also a label that summarises all
the symbols.
ALFA ROMEO CODE
SYSTEM
IN BRIEF
This is an electronic engine locking
system which increases protection
against attempted thefts of the car. It
is automatically activated when the
ignition key is removed.
There is an electronic device in each
key which can identify the signal
emitted, when the engine is started,
from an aerial built into the ignition
switch. The signal, which changes
each time the engine is started, is the
“password”, by means of which the
control unit recognises the key and
enables starting.
1)
Operation
Each time the car is started by turning
the ignition key to MAR-ON, the Alfa
Romeo CODE system control unit
sends an acknowledgement code to
the engine management control unit to
deactivate the inhibitor.
The code is sent only if the Alfa Romeo
CODE system control unit has
recognised the code transmitted by the
key. Each time the ignition key is turned to
STOP, the Alfa Romeo CODE system
deactivates the functions of the engine
management control unit.
Irregular operation
If, during starting, the code is not
correctly recognised, the
digital
warning light switches on in the display.
In this case, turn the key to STOP and
then to MAR-ON; if it is still locked,
try again with the other keys that come
with the vehicle. If it is still not possible
to start the engine, contact the
dedicated Alfa Romeo Dealership.
Activation of warning
light while driving
❒ If the
digital warning light on the
display switches on, this means that
the system is running a self-diagnosis
(for example due to a voltage drop).
❒ If thedigital warning light remains
on, contact the dedicated Alfa
Romeo Dealership.

The restoration procedure must be
performed as described below with the
doors closed:
❒completely open the driver's door
window keeping the operating button
pressed for at least three seconds
after the (lower) end of travel position
is reached;
❒ completely raise the driver side
window and hold the button down for
at least 3 seconds once the (upper)
end of travel position has been
reached;
❒ proceed in the same way as
described in points 1 and 2 for the
passenger side door;
❒ make sure that the initialisation is
correct by checking that the windows
work automatically.
WARNING
20) Incorrect use of the electric
windows may be dangerous.
Before and during their operation
ensure that passengers are not
at risk of injury from the moving
glass, either through personal
objects getting caught in the
mechanism or by being hit by it
directly. When leaving the car,
always remove the key from the
ignition to prevent accidental
operation of the electric windows
from being a hazard for those
still on board.
LUGGAGE
COMPARTMENT /
BONNET
21)
OPENING
IMPORTANT During normal car
operation, the luggage compartment
can reach temperatures above 65°C.
Pay attention when transporting objects
that may be damaged at such
temperatures. Do not keep aerosol
cans in the car: danger of explosion.
Aerosol cans must not be exposed to
temperatures above 50°C.
Procedure
22) 23)
❒with driver side door open, pull lever

❒raise the tailgate and release
supporting rod B fig. 42 from its
locking device C;
❒ insert the end of the rod in housing D
fig. 43, making sure that the rod
engages in the smallest hole of the
retaining clip. Care must be taken to
keep the tailgate raised until the
rod is fixed in the correct position.
24)
IMPORTANT Maintain a tight grip on
the tailgate when raising, in order to
prevent any external occurrence (e.g. a
gust of wind) from suddenly opening
the tailgate to end of travel. Additionally,
in order to prevent any damage to the
car or broken windows, do not force
the tailgate beyond the opening
position necessary to secure the
supporting rod B in the hole of the
retaining clip.
CLOSING
Procedure
25)
❒hold the tailgate up with one hand
and use the other to remove rod B
fig. 42 from housing D fig. 43 and
reinsert it in its locking device C fig.
42;
❒ lower the bonnet to approximately 20
centimetres from the engine
compartment and let it drop. Make
sure that the bonnet is completely
closed and not only fastened in
safety position by trying to open it. If
it is not completely closed, do not
press the bonnet down, but raise it
and repeat the procedure.
IMPORTANT Always check that the
tailgate is closed correctly to prevent it
from opening while the car is travelling.
WARNING
21) The maximum permitted load in the luggage compartment, in
addition to the kits provided, is
15 kg.
22) When accessing the rear luggage compartment, take care
with parts that may be hot, owing
to the adjacent engine
compartment. Danger of serious
burns.
23) Perform these operations only with car stationary.
24) The tailgate may drop suddenly if the supporting rod is not
positioned correctly.
25) For safety reasons, the tailgate must always be closed properly
while the car is travelling.
Therefore, always make sure that
the tailgate is closed properly
and that the lock is engaged. If
you realise during travel that the
lock is not fully engaged, stop
immediately and close the tailgate
in the correct manner.

ENGINE OIL
Check that the oil level is between the
MIN and MAX marks on the dipstick
A fig. 110.
For this check, take out the dipstick
from its seat, clean it with a lint-free
cloth, reinsert the dipstick; take it out
again and check the oil level.
116)
If the oil level is near or under the MIN
mark, add oil through the filler B fig.
110 until it reaches the MAX mark.
20)
Take out the engine oil dipstick A, clean
it with a lint-free cloth and reinsert it.
Extract the engine oil dipstick again and
check that the level is between the
MIN and MAX marks on the dipstick.
116)
The range between the MIN and MAX
levels corresponds to approximately
1 litre of oil.
Engine oil consumption
21)
3)
The maximum engine oil consumption
is usually 400 grams every 1,000 km.
When the car is new, the engine needs
to run in, therefore the engine oil
consumption can only be considered
stabilised after the first 5,000 - 6,000
km.IMPORTANT After adding or changing
the oil, let the engine run for a few
seconds and wait a few minutes after
stopping it before you check the level.
ENGINE COOLANT
22)
117)
The coolant level must be checked
when the engine is cold and must
range between the MIN and MAX
marks on the reservoir.
If the level is too low, unscrew reservoir
plug C fig. 110 and add the fluid
described in the "Fluids and lubricants"
paragraph of the "Technical
Specifications" chapter.
WINDSCREEN WASHER
FLUID
118) 119)
To check the windscreen washer fluid
level, proceed as follows:
❒
to avoid any interference during the
procedure, lift the windscreen wiper
blade according to the "Windscreen
wiper" paragraph in the
"Maintenance and care" chapter;
❒ loosen the 4 self-tapping screws A
fig. 112 using the supplied
screwdriver. Remove the bonnet
grille;
❒ release the plug from the opening; ❒
leaving the plug close to the opening,
put a finger on the central hole B fig.
113 in the plug and remove it: the
level can be seen on the control pipe
C fig. 114 due to capillarity;
❒ after the check, reinsert the plug B
with the control pipe C in the initial
position;
❒ reposition the bonnet grille and
tighten the 4 self-tapping screws A.
WARNING Re-close the plug holding it
horizontally (not directed towards the
bonnet) to prevent the opening tang
from remaining locked in a position
difficult to reach.
It is recommended to check the
windscreen washer fluid regularly, in
particular in driving conditions needing
a heavier use of the windscreen washer.
