Problem Possible causes/consequences and

The coolant
temperature display is
showing more than
248 ‡ (120 †). The
coolant warning lamp
may also be lit and a
warning tone may
sound. The coolant level is too low. The coolant is too hot and the engine
is no longer being cooled sufficiently.
X
Stop as soon as possible and allow the engine and the coolant
to cool down.
X Check the coolant level (Y page 279). Observe the warning
notes as you do so and add coolant if necessary. If the coolant level is correct, the engine radiator fan may be faulty.
The coolant is too hot and the engine is no longer being cooled
sufficiently.
X
At coolant temperatures below 248 ‡(120 †), drive to the next
qualified specialist workshop.
X Avoid heavy loads on the engine as you do so, e.g. driving in
mountainous terrain and stop-and-go traffic. Manual transmission
Gear lever
! When shifting between 5thand 6thgear,
you should always push the gea rlever all
the way to the right. You could otherwise
shift unintentionally into 3rdor4th gear
and damage the transmission.
If you shift down at too high a speed
(transmission braking), this can cause the
engine to overrev, leading to engine
damage.
Never hold the vehicle stopped on a hill by
using the clutch pedal. There is otherwise
a risk of damaging the clutch. Gear lever

Turn the brightness control knob counter-
clockwise or clockwise.
If the light switch is set to 0005,0013or
000A, the brightness is dependent upon
the brightness of the ambient light.
i The light sensor in the instrument cluster
automatically controls the brightness of
the multifunction display.
In daylight, the displays in the instrument
cluster are not lit. Coolant temperature display

WARNING
Driving when your engine is overheated can
cause some fluids which may have leaked into
the engine compartment to catch fire. You
could be seriously burned.
Steam from an overheated engine can cause
serious burns which can occur just by opening
the engine hood. Stay away from the engine
if you see or hear steam coming from it.
Stop the vehicle in a safe location away from
other traffic. Turn off the engine, get out of the
vehicle and do not stand near the vehicle until
the engine has cooled down.
! Adisplay message is shown if the coolant
temperature is too high.
If the coolant temperature is over
248 ‡(120 †), do not continue driving. The
engine will otherwise be damaged.
The coolan ttemperature gauge is in the
instrument cluster on the right-hand side
(Y page 29).
Under normal operating conditions and with
the specified coolant level, the coolant
temperature may rise to 248 ‡ (120 †). Tachometer
! Do not drive in the overrevving range, as
this could damage the engine. The red band in the tachometer indicates the
engine's overrevving range.
The fuel supply is interrupted to protec
tthe
engine when the red band is reached. Outside temperature display

WARNING
The outside temperature indicator is not
designed to serve as an ice-warning device
and is therefore unsuitable for that purpose.
Indicated temperatures just above the
freezing point do not guarantee that the road
surface is free of ice. The road may still be icy,
especially in wooded areas or on bridges.
The outside temperature display is in the
multifunction display (Y page 195).
Changes in the outside temperature are
displayed after a short delay. Speedometer with segments
The segments in the speedometer indicate
which speed range is available.
R Cruise control activated (Y page 163):
The segments light up from the stored
speed to the maximum speed.
R DISTRONIC PLUS activated (Y page 166):
One or two segments in the set speed
range light up.
R DISTRONIC PLUS detectsav ehicle in front:
The segments between the speed of the
vehicle in fron tand the stored speed light

Press the 0004or0003 button to select the
Easy Entry/Exit: function.
You will see the selected setting on or
off .

Switching the belt adjustment on/off
X Press the 0002or0005 button on the
steering wheel to select the Sett. menu.
X Press the 0004or0003 button to select the
Convenience submenu.
X Press 000Bto confirm.
X Press the 0004or0003 button to select the
Belt Adjustment function.
You will see the selected setting: Enabledor
Disabled .
X Press the 000Bbutton to save the setting.

Switching the fold-in mirrors when
locking feature on/off
This function is only available on vehicles with
Memory Function (Y page 103).
If you switch on the Fold Mirrors in when
Locking: function, the exterior mirrors fold
in when you lock the vehicle. If you unlock the
vehicle and then open a door, the exterior
mirrors fold out again.
If you have switched on the Fold Mirrorsin when Locking: function and you fold the
exterior mirrors in using the button on the
door (Y page 101), they will not fold out
automatically. The exterior mirrors can then
only be folded out using the button on the
door.
X Press the 0002or0005 button on the
steering wheel to select the Sett. menu.
X Press the 0004or0003 button to select the
Convenience submenu.
X Press 000Bto confirm. X
Press the 0004or0003 button to select the
Fold Mirrors in when Locking: function.
You will see the selected setting:
Enabled or
Disabled .
X Press the 000Bbutton to save the setting.
If you have switched the function on and you
fold the exterior mirrors in using the button
on the door (Y page 101), they will not fold
out automatically. The exterior mirrors can
then only be folded out using the button on
