Automatic locking feature
The vehicle is locked automatically when the
ignition is switched on and the vehicle's
wheels are turning at a speed in excess of
9 mph (15 km/h).
You could therefore be locke dout if:
R the vehicle is being pushed.
R the vehicle is being towed.
R the vehicle is on a roller dynamometer. X
To deactivate: press and hold button 0002
for about five seconds until a tone sounds.
X To activate: press and hold button 0003for
about five seconds until a tone sounds.
i If you press one of th etwo buttons and
do not hear a tone, the relevant setting has
already been selected.
You can also switch the automatic locking
function on and off using the on-board
computer (Y page 211). Unlocking the driver's door
(mechanical key)
If the vehicle can no longer be unlocked with
the SmartKey, use the mechanical key.
If you use the mechanical key to unloc kand
open the driver's door, the anti-thef talarm
system will be triggered ( Ypage 71).
X Take the mechanical key out of the
SmartKey (Y page 76).
X Insert the mechanical key into the lock of
the driver's door as far as it will go. X
Turn the mechanical key counter-clockwise
to position 0005.
The door is unlocked.
X Turn the mechanical key back and remove
it.
X Insert the mechanical key into the
SmartKey. Locking the vehicle (mechanical key)
If the vehicle can no longer be locked with the
SmartKey, use the mechanical key.
X Open the driver's door.
X Close the front-passenger door, the rear
doors and the trunk lid.
X Press the locking button (Y page 80).
X Check whether the locking knobs on the
front-passenger door and the rear doors
are still visible. Press down the locking
knobs manually, if necessary ( Ypage 79).
X Close the driver's door.
X Take the mechanical key out of the
SmartKey (Y page 76).
X Insert the mechanical key into the lock of
the driver's door as far as it will go. Doors

Turn the mechanical key clockwise as far
as it will go to position 0005.
X Turn the mechanical key back and remove
it.
X Make sure that the doors and the trunk lid
are locked.
X Insert the mechanical key into the
SmartKey.
i If you lock the vehicle as described above,
the fuel filler flap is not locked. The anti-
theft alarm system is not armed. Trunk

WARNING
If persons, particularly children are subjected
to prolonged exposure to extreme heat or
cold, there is a risk of injury, possibly even
fatal. Never leave children unattended in the
vehicle. G
WARNING
Combustion engines emit poisonous exhaust
gases such as carbon monoxide. Exhaust
gases can enter the vehicle interior if the
trunk lid is open when the engine is running,
especially if the vehicle is in motion .There is
a risk of poisoning.
Always switch off the engine before opening
the trunk lid. Never drive with the trunk lid
open. !
The trunk lid swings upwards when
opened. Therefore, make sure that there is
sufficient clearance above the trunk lid.

You should preferably place luggage or loads
in the cargo compartment. Observe the
loading guidelines (Y page 256).
Do not leave the SmartKey in the trunk. You
could otherwise lock yourself out.
The trunk lid can be:
R opened and closed manually from outside
R opened automatically from outside
R opened automatically from inside
R locked separately
R unlocked with the mechanical key
R opened with the emergency release button Opening/closing from outside

You can open the trunk lid from the driver's
seat when the vehicle is stationary and
unlocked. X
To open: press the upper section of the
remote operating switch for trunk lid 0002
until the trunk lid opens. Locking the trunk separately
You can lock the trunk separately.Ify ou then
unlock the vehicle centrally, the trunk
remains locked and cannot be opened.
X Close the trunk lid.
X Take the mechanical key out of the
SmartKey (Y page 76). X
Insert the mechanical key into the trunk lid
lock as far as the stop.
X Turn the mechanical key clockwise from
position 0005to position 0006. X
Remove the mechanical key.
X Insert the mechanical key into the
SmartKey. Unlocking the trunk (mechanical key)
! The trunk lid swings upwards when
opened. Therefore, make sure that there is
sufficient clearance above the trunk lid.
If the trunk cannot be unlocked with the
SmartKey or KEYLESS-GO, use the
mechanical key.
If you use the mechanical key to unlock and
open the trunk lid, the anti-theft alarm system
will be triggered (Y page 71).
X Take the mechanical key out of the
SmartKey (Y page 76).
X Insert the mechanical key into the trunk lid
lock as far as the stop. X
Turn the mechanical key counter-clockwise
from position 0005as far as it will go to
position 0006.
The trunk is unlocked.
X Turn the mechanical key back to position
0005 and remove it.
X Insert the mechanical key into the
SmartKey. Trunk emergency release

Changing the front bulbs
Low-bea mheadlamps (halogen

WARNING
These bulbs are pressurized.
They can explode when being changed if:
R they are still hot
R they hit an object when being removed
R they are dropped
There is a risk of injury.
You should wear eye protection and clean
gloves when you are changin gabulb. If
necessary, have bulbs changed at a qualified

Switch off the lights.
X Open the hood.
X Turn housing cover 0002counter-clockwise
and pull it out.
X Turn bulb holder 0003counter-clockwise and
pull it out.
X Take the bulb out of bulb holder 0003.
X Inser tthe new bulb into bulb holder 0003.
X Insert bulb holder 0003into the lamp and turn
it clockwise.
X Align housing cover 0002and turn it
clockwise until it engages. High-beam headlamps (halogen

panels You must open the side trim panel in the trunk
and remove the first-aid kit before you can
change the bulbs in the tail lamps.

To open: turn rotary catch 000290° in the
direction of the arrow and remove side trim
panel 0003.
X To close: insert side trim panel 0003and turn
rotary catch 000290° in the opposite
direction to the arrow. Left-hand side trim panel (vehicles withou

X To open: loosen side trim panel 0002at the
top and fold it down in the direction of the
arrow.
X To close: insert side panel 0002.
Tail lamp X
Switch off the lights.
X Open the trunk.
X Open the side trim panel (Y page 119). X
Remove the tail lamp connector
X Simultaneously press retaining lugs 0002in
the direction of the arrow and slightly pull
out the bulb holder with the bulbs.
X Remove the connector for LED light
functions from the top of the bulb holder.
X Pull the bulb holder out with the bulbs. 0002

X Press the respective bulb 0002,0003or0022 back
and turn it counter-clockwise to remove it
from the bulb holder.
X Insert the new bulb into the bulb holder and
turn it clockwise.

X Insert the bulb holder againa nd lock it in
place.
X Insert the tail lamp connector.

Setting the temperature
Dual-zone automatic climate control Different temperatures can be set for the
driver's and front-passenger sides.
X Turn the SmartKey to position 2in the
ignition lock (Y page 141).
X To increase/reduce: turn control0002or
0020 clockwise or counter-clockwise
(Y page 127).
Only change the temperature setting in
small increments. Start at 72 ‡ (22 †).
3-zone automatic climate control 7Automatic climate control zones
You can select different temperature settings
for the driver's and front-passenger sides as
well as for the rear compartment.
X Turn the SmartKey to position 2in the
ignition lock (Y page 141).
X To increase/reduce the temperature in
the front: turn control 0002or0020 clockwise
or counter-clockwise (Y page 130).
Only change the temperature setting in
small increments. Start at 72 ‡ (22 †).
X To increase/reduce the temperature in
the rear compartment using the front
control panel: press the0003button.
The indicator lamp in the 0003button goes
out. X

The MAX COOL function is only available in
vehicles for the USA.
MAX COOL is only operational when the
engine is running.
When you activate MAX COOL, climate
control switches to the following functions:
R maximum cooling
R maximum airflow
R air-recirculation mode on
X To activate: press the0001button.
The indicator lamp in the button lights up.
X To activate: press the0001button again.
The indicator lamp goes out. The previously
selected settings are restored. Defrosting the windows
Windows fogged up on the inside X
Activate the 0005cooling with air
dehumidification function.
X Activate automatic mode 0004.
X Adjust the side air vents so that the warmed
air is directed to the side windows.
X If the windows continue to fog up, activate
the "windshield defrosting" function
(Y page 134).
i You should only select this setting until
the windshield is clear again. Windows fogged up on the outside X
Activate the windshield wipers.
X Press the 0015button repeatedly until the
0018 or0019 symbol appears in the
display.
X Adjust the side air ventss o that no air is
directed to the side windows. Rear window defroster
Activating/deactivating The rear window defroster has a high current
draw. You should therefore switch it off as
soon as the rear window is clear. Otherwise,
the rear window defroster switches off
automatically after several minutes.
If the battery voltage is too low, the rear
window defroster may switch off.
X
Turn the SmartKey to position 2in the
ignition lock (Y page 141).
X Press the 000Bbutton.
The indicator lamp in the 000Bbutton lights
