WARNING!(Continued)
•Vehicles with trailers should not be parked
on a grade. When parking, apply the park-
ing brake on the tow vehicle. Put the tow
vehicle transmission in PARK. For four-
wheel drive vehicles, make sure the trans-
fer case is not in NEUTRAL. Always, block
or "chock" the trailer wheels.
• GCWR must not be exceeded.
• Total weight must be distributed be-
tween the tow vehicle and the trailer
such that the following four ratings are
not exceeded:
1. GVWR
2. GTW
3. GAWR
4. Trailer tongue weight rating for the trailer hitch utilized . Towing Requirements – Tires
•
Proper tire inflation pressures are essential
to the safe and satisfactory operation of your
vehicle. Refer to “Tires – General Informa-
tion” in “Starting and Operating” for proper
tire inflation procedures.
• Check the trailer tires for proper tire inflation
pressures before trailer usage.
• Check for signs of tire wear or visible tire
damage before towing a trailer. Refer to
“Tires – General Information” in “Starting and
Operating” for proper inspection procedure.
• When replacing tires, refer to “Tires – Gen-
eral Information” in “Starting and Operating”
for proper tire replacement procedures. Re-
placing tires with a higher load carrying ca-
pacity will not increase the vehicle’s GVWR
and GAWR limits.
Towing Requirements – Trailer Brakes
• Do not interconnect the hydraulic brake sys-
tem or vacuum system of your vehicle with
that of the trailer. This could cause inad-
equate braking and possible personal injury. •
An electronically-actuated trailer brake con-
troller is required when towing a trailer with
electronically-actuated brakes. When towing
a trailer equipped with a hydraulic surge-
actuated brake system, an electronic brake
controller is not required.
• Trailer brakes are recommended for trailers
over 1,000 lbs (454 kg), and required for
trailers in excess of 1,654 lbs (750 kg).
WARNING!
•Do not connect trailer brakes to your vehi-
cle’s hydraulic brake lines. It can overload
your brake system and cause it to fail. You
might not have brakes when you need
them and could have an accident.
•
Towing any trailer will increase your stopping
distance. When towing, you should allow for
additional space between your vehicle and
the vehicle in front of you. Failure to do so
could result in an accident.

Vehicles equipped with Quadra-Lift™ must
be lowered to the “Park” (lowest) level, and
have automatic leveling disabled, before ty-
ing them down (from the body) on a trailer or
flatbed truck. Refer to “Quadra-Lift™ – If
Equipped” in “Starting and Operating” for more information. If the vehicle cannot be
lowered to the “Park” level (for example,
engine will not run), tie-downs must be fas-
tened to the axles (not to the body). Failure
to follow these instructions may cause fault
codes to be set and/or cause loss of proper
tie-down tension.

The transfer case must be shifted into NEU-
TRAL (N) and the transmission must be in
PARK for recreational towing. The NEUTRAL
(N) selection button is adjacent to the transfer
case selector switch. Shifts into and out of
transfer case NEUTRAL (N) can take place with
the selector switch in any mode position.

7. Using the point of a ballpoint pen or similar
object, press and hold the recessed transfer
case NEUTRAL (N) button (located by the se-
lector switch) for four seconds. The light behind
the N symbol will blink, indicating shift in prog-
ress. The light will stop blinking (stay on solid)
when the shift to NEUTRAL (N) is complete. A
"FOUR WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEM IN NEU-
TRAL"message will display on the EVIC (Elec-
tronic Vehicle Information Center). Refer to
"Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC)"
in "Understanding Your Instrument Panel "for
further information. 8. After the shift is completed and the NEU-
TRAL (N) light stays on, release the NEUTRAL
(N) button.
9. Start the engine.
10. Shift the transmission into REVERSE.
11. Release the brake pedal for five seconds
and ensure that there is no vehicle movement.
12. Turn the engine OFF, then turn the ignition
switch back to the ON/RUN position without
starting the engine.
13. Firmly apply the parking brake.
14. Shift the transmission into PARK.
CAUTION!
Damage to the transmission may occur if the
transmission is shifted into PARK with the
transfer case in NEUTRAL (N) and the en-
gine running. With the transfer case in NEU-
TRAL (N) ensure that the engine is OFF
before shifting the transmission into PARK.15. Attach the vehicle to the tow vehicle using a
suitable tow bar.
16. Release the parking brake.
17. Disconnect the negative battery cable, and
secure it away from the negative battery post.
NOTE:
•
Steps 1 through 6 are requirements that
must be met before pressing the NEU-
TRAL (N) button, and must continue to be
met until the shift has been completed. If
any of these requirements are not met
before pressing the NEUTRAL (N) button
or are no longer met during the shift, then
the NEUTRAL (N) indicator light will flash
continuously until all requirements are
met or until the NEUTRAL (N) button is
released.

Without The Key FobSpecial care must be taken when the vehicle is
towed with the ignition in the LOCK/OFF posi-
tion. The only approved method of towing with-
out the key fob is with a flatbed truck. Proper
towing equipment is necessary to prevent dam-
age to the vehicle.
Four-Wheel Drive ModelsThe manufacturer recommends towing with all
wheelsOFFthe ground. Acceptable methods
are to tow the vehicle on a flatbed or with one
end of vehicle raised and the opposite end on a
towing dolly.
If flatbed equipment is not available, and the
transfer case is operable, the vehicle may be
towed (in the forward direction, with ALLwheels
on the ground), IFthe transfer case is in NEU-
TRAL (N) and the transmission is in PARK.
Refer to “Recreational Towing” in “Starting And
Operating” for detailed instructions.
CAUTION!
• Front or rear wheel lifts must not be used.
Internal damage to the transmission or
transfer case will occur if a front or rear
wheel lift is used when towing.
• Towing this vehicle in violation of the
above requirements can cause severe
transmission and/or transfer case dam-
age. Damage from improper towing is not
covered under the New Vehicle Limited
Warranty.
