Radio frequency remote
control unit
A
Remote control A locks and unlocks the doors and tailgate.
It is powered by a battery which must be replaced every two years (refer to the information on the “Radio frequency remote control: battery” in Section 5).
Driver’s responsibility
Never leave your vehicle with the keys inside when leaving a child (or animal) in the car, even for a short period.
The reason for this is that the child may endanger himself or others by starting the engine, activating equip- ment such as the window winders for example, or locking the doors.
Risk of serious injury.

Note: if an opening element (door or tailgate) is open or not properly closed, the hazard warning lights will not flash.
Note: on certain vehicles, if a door is not opened within approximately
30 seconds of the door being unlocked by remote control, the doors will lock again automatically.
Interference
Interference by factors in the immediate vicinity (external installations or the use of equipment operating on the same frequency as the remote control) may affect the operation of the remote con- trol.
The remote control unit
operating range
This varies according to the surround- ings: therefore take care that when handling the remote control you do not inadvertently lock or unlock the doors.
If you lose your keys or remote control unit, or need another set, contact your approved dealer.
– If a remote control is replaced,
it will be necessary to take the vehicle and all sets of keys to your approved dealer to initial- ise the system.
– It is possible to use up to four
remote control units for one vehicle.
Remote control unit failure
Make sure that the batteries are always in good condition: they have a service life of approximately two years.
Refer to the information on “Radio frequency remote control unit: bat- tery” in Section 5.
Door locking/unlocking
Press button 2 on remote control A for approximately one second to lock the
doors and button 3 to unlock them.
– The hazard warning lights and side
indicator lights flash twice to indicate that the doors have been locked.

RUNNING IN
Petrol version
For the first 600 miles (1,000 km), do not exceed 78 mph (130 km/h) in the highest gear, or 3,000 to 3,500 rpm.
After 600 miles (1,000 km), you may use your vehicle normally. However, it is only after 1,800 miles (3,000 km) have been covered that you may rea- sonably expect full performance.
Service intervals: refer to the Mainte- nance Service Booklet for your vehicle.
Diesel version
For the first 900 miles (1,500 km), do not exceed 2,500 rpm. After complet- ing this mileage you may drive faster, although you may only expect top p e r f o r m a n c e a f t e r a p p r o x i m a t e l y 3,600 miles (6,000 km).
During the running in period, do not ac- celerate hard while the engine is still cold and do not let the engine over-rev.
Service intervals: refer to the Mainte- nance Service Booklet for your vehicle.
IGNITION SWITCH
Stop and steering lock
position St
To lock: remove the key and turn the steering wheel until the steering column locks.
To unlock: turn the key and the steering wheel slightly.
Accessories position A
When the ignition is switched off, any accessories (radio, etc.) will continue to function.
Ignition on position M
The ignition is switched on:
–
petrol version: the engine may be started.
–
diesel version: the engine is pre- heating.
Start position D
If the engine fails to start at the first attempt, the key must be turned back before the starter can be activated again.
Release the key as soon as the engine starts.

Nothing should be placed on the floor area in front of the driver as such objects may slide under the pedal during braking manoeuvres, thus obstructing its use.
Ensure that no hard, heavy
or pointed objects protrude or are placed in such a way that they may fall on any passengers during sudden turning, braking or in the event of an acci- dent.

BODYWORK MAINTENANCE (continued)
You should
– Wash your car frequently, with the engine off, with cleaning products recommended by the manufacturer (never use abrasive products) and be sure to jet-rinse off:
– spots of tree resin and industrial grime;
– bird droppings, which contain chemicals that rapidly discolour paintwork and may cause the paint to peel off;
Wash the vehicle immediately to
remove these marks since it is im- possible to remove them by pol- ishing;
– salt deposited in the wheel arches and underneath the body after driving in areas where the roads are chemically treated;
– mud in the wheel arches and un- derneath the body which form damp patches. –
Keep well away from the vehicle in
front when driving on gravelled sur- faces to prevent paint damage.
– Repair or have repaired quickly
patches where the paint has been damaged to prevent corrosion spreading.
– Remember to visit the body shop pe
- riodically in order to maintain your anti-corrosion warranty. Refer to the Maintenance Service Booklet.
– Respect local regulations about

washing vehicles (e.g. do not wash your vehicle on a public highway). –
Before using a roller type car wash,
put the windscreen wiper stalk in Park position (refer information on the “Windscreen wash/wipe” in Section 1), check that the external accessories, additional lights, and mirrors are securely fitted and that the wiper blades and radio aerial are taped down.
If your vehicle has a car phone and radio, remove the aerials.
– Spray mechanical components,
hinges, etc. with products approved by the Technical Department to protect them after they have been cleaned.

Use products selected by the Technical Department or warm soapy water and a sponge and dry off with a dry cloth.
Do not use cleaning agents or dyes.

INTERIOR TRIM MAINTENANCE
Whatever type of stain is on the trim, use soapy water (if possible, warm water) containing:
– normal soap,
– washing up liquid (with one part
washing up liquid to 200 parts water).
Rinse off with a soft, damp cloth.
Special features
– Glass instrument panel
(e.g.: instrument panel, radio display, etc.).
Use a soft cloth (or cotton wool).
If this does not clean it properly, use a soft cloth (or cotton wool) slightly moistened with soapy water and then wipe clean with a soft damp cloth or cotton wool.
Finally, dry off carefully with a soft dry cloth.
Cleaning products containing al- cohol must not be used under any circumstances.
You should not:
You are strongly recommended not to use high-pressure or spray clean- ing equipment inside the passenger compartment: without careful use, this equipment could impair the correct functioning of the electrical or electronic components in the vehicle, or have other detrimental effects.
You are strongly advised not to place items such as air fresheners, perfume etc. near the air vents as these could damage the dashboard fittings.
