Keep your eyes moving — scan
the road ahead and to the sides. .
Check the rearview mirror and
vehicle instruments often.
Hill and Mountain Roads Driving on steep hills or through
mountains is different than driving
on flat or rolling terrain. Tips for
driving in these conditions include: .
Keep the vehicle serviced and in
good shape. .
Check all fluid levels and brakes,
tires, cooling system, and
transmission. .
Shift to a lower gear when going
down steep or long hills.

If you do not shift down, the
brakes could get so hot that they
would not work well. You would
then have poor braking or even

crash. Shift down to let the engine
assist the brakes on a steep
downhill slope.
{ WARNINGCoasting downhill in N (Neutral)
or with the ignition off is
dangerous. The brakes will have
to do all the work of slowing down
and they could get so hot that
they would not work well. You
would then have poor braking or
even none going down a hill.
Steering may also be affected
when ignition is off. You could
crash. Always have the engine
running and the vehicle in gear
when going downhill.

into P (Park).
5. Release the brake pedal.
Leaving After Parking on a Hill 1. Apply and hold the brake pedal
while you: .
Start the engine. .
Shift into a gear. .
Release the parking brake.
2. Let up on the brake pedal.
3. Drive slowly until the trailer is
clear of the chocks.
4. Stop and have someone pick up
and store the chocks.
Maintenance When Trailer
Towing
The vehicle needs service more
often when pulling a trailer. See the
Maintenance Schedule on
page 11 ‑ 3 . Things that are especially important in trailer
operation are automatic
transmission fluid, engine oil, axle
lubricant, belts, cooling system and
brake system. Inspect these before
and during the trip.
Check periodically to see that all
hitch nuts and bolts are tight.
Engine Cooling When Trailer
Towing The cooling system may temporarily
overheat during severe operating
conditions. See Engine Overheating
on page 10 ‑ 18 .
Trailer Towing Three important considerations
have to do with weight: .
The weight of the trailer .
The weight of the trailer tongue .
The total weight on the vehicle's
tires Weight of the Trailer How heavy can a trailer safely be?
Speed, altitude, road grades,
outside temperature, special
equipment, and the amount of
tongue weight the vehicle can carry
must be considered. See “ Weight of
the Trailer Tongue ” later in this
section for more information.
Maximum trailer weight is calculated
assuming only the driver is in the
tow vehicle and it has all the
required trailering equipment. The
weight of additional optional
equipment, passengers and cargo in
the tow vehicle must be subtracted
from the maximum trailer weight.

how much the vehicle can weigh,
based upon the vehicle model and
options.

Vehicle Care 10-11since the last oil change.
Remember to reset the oil life
system whenever the oil is changed.
How to Reset the Engine Oil
Life System Reset the system whenever the
engine oil is changed so that the
system can calculate the next
engine oil change. To reset the
system:
1. Press the DIC vehicle
information button to display OIL
LIFE REMAINING on the DIC.
See Driver Information Center
(DIC) on page 5 ‑ 23 and Engine
Oil Messages on page 5 ‑ 30 .
2. Press the DIC Set/Reset button
for five seconds to reset the oil
life at 100%.
Be careful not to reset the oil life
display accidentally at any time
other than after the oil is
changed. It cannot be reset
accurately until the next oil
change. The oil life system can also be reset
as follows:
1. Turn the ignition key to ON/RUN
with the engine off.
2. Fully press and release the
accelerator pedal three times
within five seconds.
If the OIL LIFE REMAINING value is
not 100%, the system needs to be
reset again.
Automatic Transmission
Fluid It is not necessary to check the
transmission fluid level.
A transmission fluid leak is the only
reason for fluid loss. If a leak
occurs, take the vehicle to the
dealer and have it repaired as soon
as possible.
Change the fluid and filter at the
intervals listed in Maintenance
Schedule on page 11 ‑ 3 , and be sure
to use the transmission fluid listed in
Recommended Fluids and
Lubricants on page 11 ‑ 12 . Notice: Use of the incorrect
automatic transmission fluid may
damage the vehicle, and the
damages may not be covered by
the vehicle warranty. Always use
the automatic transmission fluid
listed in Recommended Fluids
and Lubricants on page 11 ‑ 12 .
For the 2.4L L4 and 3.0L
V6 engines, the transmission fluid
will not reach the end of the dipstick
unless the transmission is at
operating temperature. If you need
to check the transmission fluid level,
please take the vehicle to your
dealer.
