190 Cleaning and protection
Automatic car wash
Th e ve hicl e can be washed in almost any
modern automatic car wash .
The vehicle paint is so du rable that t he ve hicle
can normally be washed without problems in
an automatic car wash . However, the effect on
the paint depends to a large extent on the de­
sig n of the facility, the filte ring of the wash
wate r, the type of wash and care mater ia l, etc.
If th e p aint ha s a dull appearance afte r go ing
through the car wash or is scratched, bring
this to the attention of the operator immedi­
ately.
If necessary, use a different car wash.
Th e power top does no t require special pre ­
cautions be fore passing through a car wash.
However , the car mu st not be treated with
hot wa x after the wash cycle!
The wax could
adversely affect the power top and even dam­
age the fabric ove r a period of time.
The power top does not have to be washed ev­
e ry time you use a car wash . The power top
can be spared if the car wash facility is equ ip­
ped with manually adjustable roof brushes or
rollers.
Before going through a car wash, be sure to
take the usual precaut ions such as clos ing the
windows . Remove antenna if applicable.
I f yo u have installed additional accessories on
the vehicle - such as spoilers, etc. - it is best to
ask the car wash operator i f these should be
removed.
On ly use car washes where the vehi cle re ­
mains stationary and the cleaning equipment
moves around the vehicle wh ile washing and
drying. It is not recommended to use car
washes where the vehicle is moved forward on
a conveyer.

the facility -there is a risk of damage to
the whee ls and tires.
Washing the vehicle by hand
A lot of water is needed when washing a vehi­
cle by hand.

.,. As you clean yo ur vehicle, start w ith t he roof
and wo rk your way down to t he bo ttom, us­
ing a sponge, a s ponge g love or a clean
br ush .
.,. Rinse the s ponge o r th e sponge g love o ften,
flushi ng it clean eac h time .
.,. Use spec ia l car shampoo only for very persis ­
tent dirt .
.,. Rinse the car t ho roughly with water.
.,. Use a chamo is leather to gently wipe the ex-
t er ior d ry .
U se a separate sponge for cleaning the
whee ls, door s ills and othe r regions exposed
to road dirt . In this way, yo u w ill not scratch
t h e pa int w ith coarse pa rticles imb edded in
t h e sponge the next time you wash t he ca r.

dampened with dish detergent and water is recommended.

Aluminum trim
Use only neutral-pH products to remove spots
and depos its from alum inum s urfaces.
C hrome care products and alkaline cleaners
will attack alum inum surfaces and can dam­
age them over time .

Fabrics and fabric coverings
Fab rics and fabr ic coveri ngs (e.g . seats, doo r
tr im panels, etc.) should be cleaned at reg ula r
i nte rva ls wi th a vac uum cleaner . Thi s removes
sur face dirt particles which could become em­
bedded in the fabr ic through use . Steam
cleane rs shou ld not be used, because the
steam tends to push the dirt deeper into the
fabric and lock it there.
Normal cleaning
Generally, we recommend using a soft sponge
or a lint-free microfiber cloth to the clean fab­ ric. Brushes should on ly be used for carpets
and floor mats, s ince other fabric surfaces
could be harmed by brushes.
Normal surface sta ins can be cleaned using a
commercia lly available foam cleaner. Spread
the foam on the surface of the fabric with a
soft sponge and work it in gently. Do not sat u­
rate the fabric. Then pat the foam d ry using
absorbent, dry cloths (e .g . microfibe r cloth)
and vacuum it afte r it has dr ied comp lete ly .

Cleaning sta ins
Stains caused by bever ages (e.g . coffee, fr uit
ju ice, etc.) can be treated with a mild deter ­
gent solution. Apply the detergent so lution
with a sponge. In the case of stubborn stains, a detergent paste can be applied directly to
the stain and worked into the fabric . After­
wards, use copious amounts of clean water to
remove the rema ining deterge nt. Apply the
water wit h a damp cloth or sponge and pat
t h e fabric dry with an abso rbent, dry clot h.
Stai ns from choco late or makeup should have
detergent paste rubbed i nto them . After ­
wards, remove the soap w ith water (damp
sponge).
A lcohol can be used to treat stai ns from
grease, o il, lipstick or a ballpoint pen . M elted
grease or dye must be patted off using ab­
sorbent mater ial. It may be necessa ry to re ­
t reat the areas with de tergent pas te and wa­
te r.
In the case of gene ral soiling of the uphols­
tery a nd cover material, we recommend hir ing
a speci alist t hat h as the eq uipment to clean
t h e se at cove rs and othe r fabr ic surfaces by
shampooing and spray extraction.

Modern engine lubrication has taken a quan­
tum leap in the last few years. Many synthetic
oils ava ilable today provide better engine lu­
brication that can outlast traditional petrole­
um-based oils, making them a smart choice
for use throughout the life of your Audi .
Whether you use synthetic or petroleum ­
based engine oil, the oil that you use must
conform to Audi 's oil quality standard
VW 502 00 to he lp keep your vehicle's engine
running smoothly and help prevent the for­
mat ion of harmfu l deposits, sometimes called
"sludge ", that ove r time can lead to expensive
repairs .
At the time of pr int ing , engine o ils available in
the U .S . and Canada that meet the exacting
specifi cations of Audi oi l standard VW 502 00
a re synthetic engine oils. This does not mean,
however, that every syn thetic engine oil will
meet Audi oil standard VW 502 00. So always
be sure that you use an approved oil.
To help prevent the format ion of harmful de ­
posits use only oi l with the fo llowing specifi­
cations printed on the oil container :
Audi oil standard VW 502 00
O il container labe ls may carry the specif ica ­
tion s ingly or in comb inat ion with other des ig­
nations and oil qua lity standards .
Viscosity
Engine oi ls are graded according to their vis­
cosity. The proper viscosity grade oil for your
engine depends on cl imactic or seasonal con­
d itions where you drive. You can use oil with a
viscosity grade of SA E SW40 across all tem ­
pe ratu re ranges for normal driving conditions .
However, if eng ine o il viscos ity grade SA E
SW40 is not avai lab le, you can also use viscos­
ity grade SAE SW -30 or SAE OW-40 as long as
it meets Audi o il quality standard VW 502 00
specif ications .
Because engine oil that meets the Audi oil
standard may not be available everywhere
when you need it, we strongly recommend
that you always carry with you an ext ra quart (
li te r) of oil that exp ress ly con forms to the
VW 502 00 spec ification, in case you have to
top
off the oil while on the road.
Only if the level of the o il is a t or be low the
min imum mark -and no oi l that expressly
conforms to Audi oil standard VW 502 00
specifications is available - may you top
off
with a high quality engine o il, preferab ly syn ­
thet ic-based, tha t mee ts ACEA A3 or API SM
specifications, but even then , only in v iscosity
grades SAE SW-40 , SAE SW-30, o r SA E
OW-40. However, dur ing the entire time be­
tween oil change inte rva ls , never top
off with
more than a total of 0.5 q t/ liter engine o il
t h at does not con form to Audi oi l specification
vw 502 00.

Changing the engine oil
The eng ine oi l and oil fi lter must be changed
according to the mileage (kilometers) and
time intervals specified in your ve hicle's War­
ranty
& Maintenance booklet. Do not exceed
these intervals -harmful deposits from old
engine oil ca n reduce eng ine performance and
can lead to expensive engine repa irs .
Changi ng the oil at the recommended inter­
vals is so very important because the lubricat­ ing proper ties of oil decrease gradually during
norma l veh icle use . If you are not sure when
you have your oil changed, ask your author­ ized Audi Serv ice Adv isor.
Under some circumstances the engine oil
shou ld even be cha nged more frequent ly .
Change oil more often if you drive mostly
sho rt distances, operate the ve hicle in dusty
areas o r most ly unde r stop-and-go t raff ic con-
di tions, o r when you use your vehi cle where .,..

temperatures stay below freezing point for l ong periods.
Detergent add itives in the o il w il l make fresh
oil look dark after the eng ine has been run ­
ning fo r a short time . This is norma l and is not
a reason to change the oi l more often than
recommended.
D am ag e or m alfun ction s due to lack of
ma intenanc e
It is essential that you change your oil at the
r ecommended inte rva ls using only engine o il
t hat complies with A udi oi l standard
VW 502 00 . Your Limited New Vehicle War ­
ranty does not cover damage or malfunctions
due to fa ilure to fo llow recommended mainte­
nance and use requ irements as set forth in
the Audi Owner's Manual and Warranty
&
Maintenance book let . Your dealer will have to
deny warranty coverage u nless you present to
the dea ler p roof in the fo rm of Serv ice or Re­
pa ir Orde rs that all s chedu led maintenance
was pe rformed in a t imely manner .
Engine oil consumption
The engine in your vehicle depends on an ade­
quate amount of oil to lubricate and cool all
of its moving parts.
In o rder to provide effective lubrication and
cool ing of internal engine components, a ll in­
ternal combustion eng ines consume a certa in
amo unt of o il. Oil consumption varies from
engine to engine and may change significantly
over the life of the engine. Typ ica lly, engines
with a specified break-in period (see
¢
page 184) consume more oil during the
break-in per iod than they consume after oil
consumption has stabilized .
Under normal conditions, the rate of oil con ­
sumpt ion depends on the quality and viscosity
of the oil, the RPM (revo lutions per m inute) at
which the engine is operated, the ambient
temperature and road condit ions. Furthe r fac­
tors are the amount of o il d ilution from wate r
condensation or fuel residue and the ox ida­
tion level of the oil. As any engine is s ubje ct to

wear as mi leage builds up, the oil consump­
tion may increase over time until replacement
of worn components may become necessary.
Wi th a ll these variab les coming into p lay, no
standard rate of oil consumpt ion can be es ­
tablished or specified. There is no alternative
to regular and frequent check ing of the o il lev ­
el, see
Note .

not an indi cator of the oil le vel. Do not
rely on it . Instead, check the oil level in
your engine at regu lar intervals, pref­

before going on a long trip .

Wheel bolts
Wheel bolts must always be tightened to the
correct torque .
The design of wheel bolts is matched to the
factory installed r ims. If differen t rims are fit­
ted, the correct wheel bolts with the right l ength and correctly shaped bolt heads must
be used. This ensures that wheels are fitted
securely and that the brake system functions
correctly .
In certain circumstances, you may not use
wheel bo lts from a different vehicle -eve n if it
i s the same model

Improperly tig htened or maintained whee l
bolts can become loose ca using loss of
contro l, a co llision and serious persona l in­
jury.
- Always keep the wheel bolts and the threads in the wheel hubs clean so the
whee l bolts can turn easily and be prop­
erly t ightened.
- Never grease or oil the wheel bo lts and
the threads in the wheel hubs. They can become loose wh ile driving if greased or
o iled, even if tightened to the specif ied
torque .
- Only use wheel bolts that belong to the
rim being installed.
- Never use different whee ls bolts on your
vehicle .
-Always maintain the correct tighten ing
torque for the wheel bo lts to reduce the
risk of a wheel loss . If the tightening tor ­
que of the wheel bolts is too low, they
can loosen and come out when the vehi­
cl e is moving.
If the tightening torque is
too high, the whee l bolts and threads
can be damaged and the wheel can be­
come loose.
Q;) Note
The spec ified torque fo r the wheel bo lts is
90 ft lbs. (120 Nm) with a tolerance of
± 7,4 ft lbs.(± 10 Nm). Torque wheel bo lts

diagonally. After changing a wheel, the
torque m ust be checked as soon as possi­
ble with a torque wrench -preferably by an
a uthori zed Audi dea ler or qualified work­
shop.
Low aspect ratio tires
Your Aud i is factory -equ ipped w ith low aspect
ratio tires . These tires have been tho roughly
tested and been se lected specifically fo r your
model for their superb perfo rmance, road fee l
and hand ling under a var iety o f driving cond i­
tions. Ask your authorized Audi dealer for
more details .
T he low aspect ratio of these t ires is ind icated
by a numeral of
55 or l ess in the tire's s ize
designation. The numera l rep resents the ra tio
of the tire's sidewa ll height in relation to its
tread width expressed in percentage . Conven­
tiona l tires have a he ight/w idth ratio of 60 or
more.
T he performance of low-a spe ct- ra tio tire s is
p ar tic ul ar ly se nsi tiv e to i mprop er i nfl ation
pre ssure. It is the refo re important that low
a spect ratio t ires are inflated to the specified
pr ess ure and that th e inflation pr essur e is
r e gula rly ch ecked and maintain ed. Tir e pre s­
s ure s should b e check ed at l east once a
m onth and alwa ys befo re a long trip

What you c an do to avo id tire and rim
damage
Low aspect ratio tires can be damaged mo re
easily by impact w ith potholes, curbs, g ull ies
o r ridges on the road, pa rticularly if the tire is
u nderinflated.
In orde r to minimize the occurrence of impact
damage to the tires of your vehicle, we recom ­
mend that you observe the following p reca u­
tions:
- Always ma inta in recommended inflation
pressu res. Check your tire pressure eve ry
2,000 miles (3,000 km) and add air if neces-
