Ignition is on
This message appears and a warn ing tone
sounds if yo u open the dr iver's door when the
ignition is switched on.
No key identified
This message appears when the
I STAR T ENGIN E ST OP !* button is pressed if
there is no master key inside the vehicle or if
the system does not recognize it. For exam­
p le, the master key cannot be recognized if it
is co vered by an object (e.g. aluminum brief
case) which screens the radio signal. Electron­
ic devices s uch as ce ll phones can also inter­
fere with the radio signal.
Press brake pedal to start engine
This message appears if you do not press the
brake peda l to start the engine .
Shift to N or P to start engine
This message appears when attempting to
start the engine if the selector lever for the
automatic transmission is not in the P or N
position . The engine can only be started with
the selector in these posit ions .
!I Is the key in the vehicle ?
This message appears in a veh icle w ith Con­
ve nience key* if the master key is removed
from the veh icle with the engine running . If
the master key is no longer in the vehicle, you
cannot switch on the ignition after stopping
the eng ine and you also cannot start the en­
g ine again . Moreover, you cannot lock the ve ­
h icle from the outside with the key .
Shift to P otherwise vehicle can roll away.
Doors do not lock if lever is not in P.
This message appears for safety reasons
a long with a warning signal. It appears if the
selector lever for the automatic transm ission
is not in the P position when switch ing off the
ignition . Move the selector lever to the P pos i­
tion, otherwise the veh icle is not sec ured
against rolling away . You also cannot lock the vehicle
using the locking button* on the door
handle or using the remote key.
Turn off ignition before leaving car
Th is message appears if the driver's door is
opened wh ile the ignition is switched on. Al­
ways switch off the ignition if you are leaving
the vehicle. See also

Shift to P and turn off ignition, otherwise ve­
hicle can roll away
This message appears if the driver's door is
opened w hile the ignition is switched on and
t h e selecto r lever is not in the P position. Shift
the selecto r lever into the P position and
switch off the ignition when you exi t the vehi­
cl e. Otherwise the vehicle could roll. See also
¢ page 84 or¢ page 86.
Convenience key defective! Use ignition lock
This message appears if the engine must be
started or stopped using the ign ition key and
not the
I START ENGINE STOP I* button.
Electro mechanical
parking brake
Operation
The electromechonicol parking broke replaces
the hand broke.

-When the vehicle is locked, no one - par­
t icu larly not ch ildren should remain in
the vehicle. Locked doors make it more
difficult for emergency workers to get in­
to the vehicle - putt ing lives at risk .
Starting from rest
The starting assist function ensures that the
parking brake is released automatically upon
starting .

Starting and automatically relea sing the
par king brake
.. When you start to drive as usua l, the park­
ing brake is automatically re leased and your
vehicle begins to move.
When stopping at a traffic signa l or stopping
in city traffic on vehicles with an automatic
transmission, the park ing brake can be ap­
plied . The veh icle does not have to be held
with the footbrake. The park ing brake elimi­
nates the tendency to creep with a drive range
engaged. As soon as you dr ive off as usual,
the park ing brake is released automatically
and the veh icle sta rts to move.
Starting on slope s
When starting on inclines, the start ing ass ist
prevents the vehicle from unintentionally roll­
i ng back . The braking force of the pa rking
brake is not released until sufficient dr iv ing
fo rce has been bu ilt up at the whee ls.
(D Tips
For safety reasons, the park ing brake is re­
leased automatically only when the dr iv­
er 's safety belt is engaged in the bu ck le.
Starting off with a trailer
To prevent rolling back unintentionally on an
incline, do the following:
• Keep the switch pulled and depress the ac­
celerator . The parking brake stays applied
and prevents the vehicle from roll ing back ­
ward .
• Yo u can re lease the switch once you a re su re
tha t you are deve lopi ng enough d riving
force a t th e wheels by depressing the acce l­
erator.
Depend ing on the we igh t of the rig (vehi cle
and t railer) and the severity of the incline, yo u
may ro ll backwa rds as yo u start . You can pre­
vent rolling backwa rds by holding the parking
brake switc h pulled out and accelerating - just
as you would when starting on a hill with a
convent ional hand brake.
Emergency braking
In the event that the conventional brake sys­
tem fails or locks.
.. In an emergency, pull the switch and con ­
tinue to pull it to slow your vehicle down
w ith the park ing brake.
• As soon as you release the switch or acceler-
ate, the brak ing process stops.
If you p ull the switch and ho ld it above a
speed of abo ut 5 mph (8 km/h), the emergen­
cy brak ing funct ion is initiated . The ve hicle is
braked at all four whee ls by activating the hy­
draulic b rake system . The brake performa nce
i s sim ilar to making an emergency stop~& .
In order not to act ivate the emergency brak­
i ng by mistake, an audib le warning tone (buz­
zer) sounds when the switch is pu lled. As soon
as the switch is re leased, or the accele rato r
peda l is depressed, eme rgency b raking stops .
A WARNING
Emergency braking should only be used in
an emergency, when the norma l foot bra ke
has fai led or the brake pedal is obs tructed. .,..

Engine automatically restarts
The stop phase is interrupted in the following
situations, for example . The engine restarts
without any act ion by the driver .
- The interior temperature varies from the
temperature selected in the A/C system.
- The windshield is beeing defrosted

-The brake pedal is pressed several times in a
row.
- The battery charge level becomes too low.
- High power consumption .
@ Tips
If you shift into the 0/5 or N positions af­
ter shifting into reverse, the vehicle must
be driven faster than 6 mph (10 km/h) in
order for the engine to switch off again.
Switching the Start-Stop-System on/off
manually
Applies to vehicles: with Sta rt-Stop-System
If you do not wish to use the system, you can
switch it off manually .

This message appears when specific condi ­
tions are not met during a stop phase and the
Start-Stop-System will
not be able to restart
the engine. The engine must be started with
the key or with the

Start-stop system: system fault. Function
unavailable
There is a malfunction in the Start-Stop-Sys­
tem. Drive the vehicle to an authorized repair
facility for servicing as soon as possible to cor­
rect the malfunction.
Transmission: Car may roll! Shift to park!
This message appears if the selector lever is
not in the P position when the driver's door is
opened. You will a lso hear a warning tone.
Shift the selector lever to the P position . Oth­
erw ise, the vehicle could roll.
Speed warning system
Overview
The speed warning system helps you to keep
your driving speed below a set speed limit.
The speed warning system warns if the driver
exceeds a previously stored maximum speed.
A warning tone will sound as soon as the vehi­ cle speed exceeds the set speed by about
3 mph (3 km/h) . At the same time, a warning

tery charge level has fa llen below a certain
range. If this message turns off after a little
while, the high voltage battery charged

thorized repair fac ility correct the malfunction
as soon as possible.

This message appears if the conditions

The functions and operating modes described
be low are se lected automatica lly by the vehi­
cle control system, depending on the vehicle
operat ing status. This ensures that the vehicle
is always in the correct operating mode. One
exception is the enhanced electric driving
mode (EV mode), which is activated by the
driver
¢pag e 100.
Driving with the combustion engine
The vehicle is powered by the combustion en­
gine. The h igh voltage battery is charged si­
multaneously, if needed.
Full acceleration (boost)
In full acceleration, the vehicle is powered by
both the combustion engine and the electric
motor . This operating mode is called
Boost
and is on ly available for a short amount of
time because it uses so much energy. Availa ­
bility depends on the high voltage battery
charge level.
The boost operating mode is activated by
pressing the accelerator pedal all the way
down.
Electric driving
The vehicle can be driven completely electri­
ca lly depending on the high vo ltage battery
charge level and the driving resistance. The
combust ion eng ine turns off at that t ime.
The combustion engine starts when accelerat ­
ing or when the high voltage battery charge
level drops be low a certain threshold. The ve­
hicle resumes e lectric driving once the accel­
eration and the high voltage battery charge
level permit.
Enhanced electric driving mode (EV
mode)
Pressing the 1~ 1 button ¢ fig. 109 can extend
the usual limits on electric driving so that you
can always drive in electric mode, if the condi­
t ion of the e lectr ica l system permits . The op­
erating mode is then set to maximum electric
drive @,@ ¢
page 98, fig. 108. It can be
driven complete ly elec trically for up to 1.8
miles (3 km) at a constant 37 mph (60 km/h) .
T he following conditions must be met to act i­
vate the enhanced e lectr ic drive:
- The high voltage battery must be suffic ient­
ly charged.
- The temperature of the 12 volt batter ies
and the hig h voltage battery must be suffi­
cient.
- The vehicle speed must not be higher than
62 mph (100 km/h).
- The transmission must not be in tiptronic
mode.

Drive select provides the possib ility to exper i­
e nce diffe ren t types of vehi cle sett ings in o ne
ve hicl e. For ins tance, us ing t he three
Com­
fort , Auto and Dynamic modes, the driver can
switch from a sporty to a comfortab le drivi ng
mode with the press of a b utton.
A ddit ionally, in veh icles wi th MM I*, the vehi ­
cle setup for
Individual* mode can be c us­
tom ized by you. This makes it possib le to
comb ine settings such as a sporty engine tun ­
ing with comfortable steering.
A WARNING
Improper use of the drive select can cause
co llisions, other accide nts and ser ious per­
sonal injury.
Description

The vehicle setup in each mode depends on
the veh icle's features . However, the engin e,
automa tic t ransmissio n and steeri ng a re a l­
ways involved.
Engine and automatic transmission
Depending on the mode , the e ng ine and the
automatic t ransm ission respond quicke r or i n
a more ba la nced manne r to a cce le rator pedal
move ments. In t he sporty dynam ic mode, the
a ut om at ic t ra nsmissio n shifts at h igher R PMs.
Steering
The steering adapts in terms of stee ring effort
and steering ra tios . Ind irect steer ing that
moves easi ly, l ike the stee rin g in comfort
mode, is best su ite d t o long dr ive s on a high­
way. In co ntr ast, dynam ic mo de p rov ides
sporty, direct steering .
T he fo llow ing applies to vehicles with dynam ic
steer ing*: the stee ring ratio changes based on
ve hicl e spee d in order to maint ain op timum steering effort
for the drive r at all times . This
sets the stee ring to be less sens itive at higher
speeds in order to provide improved vehicle
control. At reduced speeds, however, steer ing
is more d irect in order to keep the steering ef­
fort as minima l as poss ible when the driver is
mane uveri ng the veh icle. At low and ave rage
speeds, dynamic steering addit iona lly pro­
vides more respon sive stee rin g pe rforma nce.
Adaptive dampers*
The adaptive dampers* use se nsors to record
informa tion regard ing steer ing movemen ts,
braking and acceleration o perations by the
drive r, road surfac e, d riv in g speed, and load.
T his makes it poss ible to adapt damp ing to
the driving si tua tion v irtu ally in real t ime.
Dr ive sele ct also makes i t possib le to sa tisfy
t h e desire fo r spo rty suspension ( Dynamic)
and comfortab le suspension (Comfort) with ­
o ut giving up ba lanced tuning (Auto) .
Adaptive cruise control*
The be havior when accelera ting can be adju st­
ed from comforta ble to sporty, depending on
the d rive select mode . Adaptive cr uise contro l
also responds to the driv ing behavior of the
vehicle ahead in a more conservative or spo rty
manner.

- In some mo dels, t he maximum vehicle
speed can only be reached in the
Auto
and Dynamic mo des.
- Selecting the
Dynamic mode resu lts in
sporty shifting cha racte ristics. The S
gear position engages aut omatically.
- In vehicles that have dynamic stee ring *,
operating noise is heard when start ing or
stopping the e ngine. This does not indi­
cate a problem .

Automatic
transmission
tiptronic
Introduction
The automatic transmission is controlled elec­
tronically. The transmission upshifts or down­
shifts automatically depending on which drive
program is selected. The power is transferred
by a torque converter .
When a
mode rate d riv in g s ty le is used, the
transmission selects the most econom ica l
driving mode. It w ill then change up early and
delay the downshifts to g ive better fuel econ­
omy.
T he transmission switches to a sporty mode
after a k ick-down or when the driver uses a
spo rty driving sty le characterized by quick ac­
celerator pedal movements, heavy accelera­
tion, frequent changes in speed and traveling
at the maximum speed.
If desired, the driver can a lso select the gears
manually ( tiptronic mode ) c:> page 12 7.

Before you move the se lector lever to R, press
both the button in the hand le o f the selector
lever
and the brake pedal at the same t ime.
When the ignition is on, the backup lights illu­
minate when the selecto r lever is moved into
R .

D/S - Normal position for driving forward
In the D/S pos ition, the transmission can be
operated either in the no rma l mode D or in
the sport mode S. To select the sport mode S,
pull the selector lever back briefly. Pulling the
lever back again will se lect the normal mode
D. The instrument cluster disp lay shows the
selected driving mode.
In the
normal mode D, the transmission auto­
matically selects the s uitable gear ratio. It de­
pends on engine load, vehicle speed and driv ­
ing style.
