Introduction
The automatic transmission is controlled elec­
tronically. The transmission upshifts or down­
shifts automatically depending on which drive
program is selected. The power is transferred
by a torque converter .
When a
mode rate d riv in g s ty le is used, the
transmission selects the most econom ica l
driving mode. It w ill then change up early and
delay the downshifts to g ive better fuel econ­
omy.
T he transmission switches to a sporty mode
after a k ick-down or when the driver uses a
spo rty driving sty le characterized by quick ac­
celerator pedal movements, heavy accelera­
tion, frequent changes in speed and traveling
at the maximum speed.
If desired, the driver can a lso select the gears
manually ( tiptronic mode ) c:> page 12 7.

ignition on.
R -Reverse
Se lect R on ly when the vehicle is at a full stop

Before you move the se lector lever to R, press
both the button in the hand le o f the selector
lever
and the brake pedal at the same t ime.
When the ignition is on, the backup lights illu­
minate when the selecto r lever is moved into
R .
N -Neutral
The t ransm iss ion is in neut ral in this pos ition.

The vehicle can
also roll when the engine is stopped .
When the vehicle is stat iona ry or at speeds
below 1 mph (2 km/h), yo u m ust always apply
the footbrake before and whi le mov ing the

N .
D/S - Normal position for driving forward
In the D/S pos ition, the transmission can be
operated either in the no rma l mode D or in
the sport mode S. To select the sport mode S,
pull the selector lever back briefly. Pulling the
lever back again will se lect the normal mode
D. The instrument cluster disp lay shows the
selected driving mode.
In the
normal mode D, the transmission auto­
matically selects the s uitable gear ratio. It de­
pends on engine load, vehicle speed and driv ­
ing style.
Se lect the
sport mode S for sporty dr iving .
The vehicle makes fu ll use of the engine's

power. Shifting may become noticeable when
accelerating . Hybrid drive*: electric driving is
not possible .
When the veh icle is stationary o r at speeds
below 1 mph (2 km/h), you must always apply
the foot brake before and while moving the
lever to D/S out of N.

-On vehicles with Aud i drive select*, you
can adjust the sporty sh ift characteristics
i n the
Dynamic driving mode.Swill ap­
pear in the instrument cluster display in­
stead of D .
- If you accidenta lly select N while driv ing,
take your foot off the acce lerator pedal
i mmediately and wait fo r the engine to
s low down to idle before se le cting D/S.
- Hybrid drive*: if the
lasvl button
c:> page 100 is pressed w hile in sport
mode S, the transm issio n sw itches auto­
matically to the normal mode D.
- If there is a power failure, the se lector
l ever will not move out of the P posi tio n.

Automatic Shift Lock {ASL)
The Automatic Shift Lock safeguards you
against accidentally shifting into a forward or
the reverse gear and causing the vehicle to
move unintentionally.

The selector lever lock is released as follows :
.... Turn the ignition on.

Automatic selector leve r lock
The selector lever is locked in the P and N po­
s itions when the ign ition is turned on . You
must p ress the brake pedal and t he release
button to select another position . As a re­
minde r to the drive r, the following wa rni ng
appea rs in the instrumen t clus ter display
when the sele ctor is in P and N:
When stationar y apply brak e pedal while se­
lec ting gear
The Automatic Shift Lock only funct ions when
t h e veh icle is stationary or at speeds be low
1 mph (2 km/h) .
At speeds above about 1 mph (2 km/h) the
Automat ic Shift Lock is automatically deact i­
vated in the N position .
A time delay element prevents the selector lever from locking when it is moved through
the N pos it ion (go ing from R to D/S) . The lock­
i ng element w ill lock the selecto r lever if t he

lever is left in N (Neutral) for more than ap ­
proximately 1 second, witho ut the brake ped­
a l being pressed.
R elea se button
The release b utton on the selector lever pre­
vents the lever from being accidentally shifted
into certain positions. Pressing this button de ­
activates the selector lever lock. Depending
on the direction of the shift, the selector lever
locks at different positions. The positions are
h ighlighted in the illustration¢ fig.

The key cannot be removed from the ignition
unless the se lector lever is in the P park posi­
tion . When the ign ition key is removed, the
selector lever will be locked in the P pos ition.

Startin g the engine
... The selector lever must be in P or N.
Starting off
... Press and ho ld the brake pedal.
... Press and ho ld the release button in these­
lector lever handle, se lect the desired se lec­
tor lever pos ition such as D/S and release
the button.
... Wait briefly until the transmission has shift­
ed (you will feel a slight movement) .
... Remove your foot from the brake pedal and

Stopping temporarily
... Keep the veh icle stationa ry using the brak­
ing pedal, for example at t raffic lights .
... Do not press the accelerator peda l when do­
ing this .
... To prevent the vehicle from rolling when
you start driving, set the parking brake
when stopp ing on steep inclines¢_& .
The parking brake will re lease automatically
and the vehicle w ill start moving once you
press the accelerator pedal.
Stopping /parking
If the selector lever is not in the P position
when you open the driver's door, the vehicle
cou ld rol l. The message

tions by hand

On s lopes, activate the parking brake first and
then move the selector lever to the P position.
This prevents too much stress from being placed on the locking mechanism .

8_ WARNING
-Unintended vehicle movement can cause
serious injury .
- Never leave your vehicle with the engine
running while in gear. If you must leave
your vehicle when the engine is running,
activate the parking brake and move the
selector lever to P.
- Power is still transmitted to the wheels
when the engine is running at idle. To
prevent the vehicle from "creeping", you
must keep your foot on the brake when
the engine is running and the selector lever is in D/S or R or "tiptronic" mode is
selected.
- Do not press the accelerator pedal when
changing the selector lever position
while the vehicle is stationary and the
engine is running.
- Never shift into
R or P while driving.
- Before driving down a steep slope, re-
duce your speed and shift into a lower
gear with "tiptronic".
- Do not ride the brakes or press the brake
pedal too often or too long when driving
down a hill. Constant braking causes the
brakes to overheat and substantially re­
duces braking performance, increases
braking distance or causes complete fail­
ure of the brake system .
- To preven t the vehicle from rolling back
when stopping on inclines, always hold it
in place with the brake pedal or parking
brake.
- Never hold the vehicle on an incline with
a slipping clutch . The clutch opens auto­
matically when it becomes too hot from
the overload. An indicator lamp
[O] illu­
minates and a driver message appears
Q page 128when the clutch is overload­
ed.
- If the engine must remain running, never
have any driving position engaged when
checking under the hood. Make sure the
selector lever has securely engaged and
is locked in P with the parking brake set
Q page 226, Engine compartment . 0th-erwise, any increase in engine speed may
set the vehicle in motion, even with the
parking brake applied.
(D Note
- When stopping on an incline , do not try
to hold the vehicle in place by pressing
the accelerator pedal while a driving gear is selected. This can cause the transmis­
sion to overheat and can damage it. Acti­
vate the parking brake or press the brake
pedal to prevent the vehicle from rolling .
- Allowing the vehicle to roll when the en ­
gine is stopped and the selector lever is
in N will damage the transmission be­
cause it is not lubricated under those cir­
cumstances.
@ Tips
For safety reasons, the parking brake is re­
leased automatically only when the driv­
er's safety belt is engaged in the buckle.
Hill descent control
The hill descent control system assists the
driver when driving down declines.
Hill descent control is activated when these­
lector lever is in D /S and you press the brake
pedal. The transmission automatically selects
a gear that is suitable for the incline. Hill de­
scent control tries to maintain the speed ach­
ieved at the time of braking, within physical
and technical limitations. If may still be nec­
essary to adjust the speed with the brakes .
Hill descent control switches off once the de­
cline levels out or you press the accelerator
pedal.
When the speed is set in the cruise control
system
q page 95, hill descent control is also
activated.
A WARNING
-
Hill descent control cannot overcome
physical limitations, so it may not be able
to maintain a constant speed under all

conditions. Always be ready to apply the
brakes.
Manual shift program
Using the manual shift program you can
manually select gears.

Gear selection with selector lever
The tiptronic mode can be selected either with
the vehicle stationary or on the move.
.. Push the selector lever to the right from 0/

.. If you do not press a sh ift button within a
short time while in the D/S position, the
transmission will return to automatic mode.
To keep shifting using the shift buttons,
move the selector lever to the r ight out of
the D/S position .
The transm iss ion automatically shifts up or
down before cr itical engine speed is reached.
The transmission only allows manual shifting
when the eng ine speed is with in the permit­
ted range .
@ Tips
-When you shift into the next lower gear,
the transmission will downshift only
when there is no possibility of over-rev­
ving the engine.
- When the kick-down comes on, the
transmission will shift down to a lower
gear, depending on vehicle and engine
speeds.
- Tiptron ic is inoperative when the trans­
mission is in the fail-safe mode.
- Hybrid drive*: electric driving is not pos­
sible in tiptronic mode.
Kick-down
Kick-down enables maximum acceleration .
When you depress the accelerator pedal be­
yond the resistance point, the automatic
transmission downsh ifts into a lower gear, de­
pending on vehicle speed and engine speed .
The upshift into the next higher gear takes
place once the max imum specified engine
speed is reached .
_& WARNING
Please note that the drive wheels can spin
if kick-down is used on a smooth slippery
road -there is a risk of skidding .

Transmission malfunction
[O] Transmission: Press brake pedal and se·
lect g ear again.
Press the brake pedal and se lect t he des ired
selecto r lever posit io n again . Yo u can then
continue dr iving .
[O] Transmission overheating: Please drive
conservatively.
The transmission temperature has increased
significantly d ue to the sporty driving ma nner.
Drive in a less sporty manne r unt il the tem ­
pe rat ure retu rns to the norma l range a nd the
i ndicator light switch es of.
[O] Transmission malfunct ion: You can con ­
tinue driving
There is a system ma lf u nct ion in the transmis ­
sion. You may continue driving. Drive to your
authorized Audi dealer or qualified repair fa­
cility soon to have the malfunction corrected .
[O] Transmission malfunction: Limited driv­
ing funct ionality
There is a sys tem ma lf u nction in t he transmis ­
sion. The transmission is sw itchi ng to emer­
gency mode. Th is mode only sh ifts into cer­
tain gea rs or will no lo nger shift at a ll. The en ­
g ine may stall . Drive to your auth orized A udi
deale r or qualified repair facility immed iately
to have the malf unction co rrec ted.
[O] T ransmission malfunction: Stop vehicle
and shift to park .
Do not continue d rivi ng . Select the P se lect or
l ever position and see yo ur authorized Aud i
dea ler or qualified repair facility for assis­
tance .
(D Note
If the transmiss ion sw itches to emergency
mode, you sho uld take the vehicle to an
author ized Audi dealers hip as soon as p os­
sibl e to have the cond ition co rrected.
Selector lever emergency release
If the vehicle 's power supply fails , th e selec­

miles
(11500 km) and

New engine
The engine needs to be run-in during the first
1,000 miles (1 ,500 km) .
For the first 600 mile s (1,000
kilometers ):
.,. Do not use full throttle.
.,. Do not d rive at engine speeds that are more
than 2/3 of the max imum permitted RPM .
From 600 to 1,000 miles (1 ,000 to
1,500 kilometers ):
.. Speeds ca n gradually be increased to the
maximum perm iss ible road or eng ine speed .
During and after break-in period
.. Do not rev the eng ine up to h igh speeds
when it is cold. Th is applies whether the
transmission is in N (Neutral) or in gear.
After the break- in peri od
.. Do not exceed maximum eng ine speed un­
der any circumstances.
.. Upshift into the next higher gear

reaching the red area at the end of the tach­
ometer scale

During the first few hours of driving, the en ­
g ine's internal friction is higher than later
when all the moving parts have been broken
in . How well this break -in process is done de ­
pends to a considerable extent on the way the
vehicle is driven du ring the first 1,000 miles
(1,500 k ilome ters).

Extremely h igh engine speeds are auto­
mat ica lly reduc ed. However , th ese rpm
lim its are programmed for a n engine well
r u n- in, not a new engine.

@) For the sake of the environment
Do not drive with unnecessarily high en­
g ine speeds -upshifting ear ly saves f uel,
reduces noise and protects the environ­
ment.
New tires
If your vehicle is running on new tires, drive
very carefully for the first 350 miles (500 ki lo­
meters) after fitting.
.&, WARNING
N ew tires tend to be sl ippery and mus t al­
so be "b roken -in" . Be sure to remember
this dur ing the f irst 350 m iles (500 kilo­
meters) . Brake gently . Avoid fo llowing
closely behind other vehicles or other sit­
uations that m ight require sudden, hard
b raking .
New brake pads
Remember that new brake pads do not have a
full brak ing effect dur ing the first 250 m iles
(400 ki lomete rs) afte r they are installed.
New brake pads have to be "burnished in" be­
fore they have optima l grab

During the brea k-in period, yo u should avo id
putting severe loads on the brakes. Severe
l oads include , for example, sudden hard brak­
i ng, in particular at very h igh speeds or, for
example, on mounta in passes .
.&, WARNING
New b rake pads don 't have the best stop­
p ing power and must be "broken-i n" dur­
ing the initi al 100 to 150 miles (150 to
2 00 kilometers) o f no rma l ci ty driving . You
can compensate for this by pressing the b rake peda l more fi rm ly . This also applies
later when new pads are installed.

-Check the depth of the water before driv­

- Keep in mind that oncoming vehicles
may create waves that raise the water
level and make it too deep for your vehi­
cle to drive through safely.
- Avoid driving through salt water because
it can cause corrosion.
