Selector lever positions

This section describes the selector lever posi­
tions and driving ranges .

The selector lever position engaged appears
next to the selector lever as well as in the in­
strument cluster display .
P - Park
In this selector lever position the transmis­
sion is mechanically locked. Engage P only
when the vehicle is
completely stopped¢&.
in Driving the automatic transmission on
page 83 .
To shift in or out of position P, you must first
press and hold the brake pedal and then press
the release button in the selector lever handle
while moving the selector lever to or from P.
You can shift out of this pos ition only with the
ignit ion on .
R -Rever se
The transmission will automat ically select the
low est gear ratio when you shift into reverse.
Select R only when the vehicle is at a
full stop
and the eng ine is r unning at idle speed¢&. in

page 83.
Before you move the selector lever to R , press
both the button in the handle of the selector
lever
and the brake pedal at the same time.
When the ignit ion is on, the backup lights illu ­
minate when the selector lever is moved into
R.
N -Neutral
The transm iss io n is in neutral i n this pos ition.

When the vehicle is stat ionary or at speeds
below 3 mph (5 km/h), yo u must always app ly
the footbrake before and whi le mov ing the
l ever o ut of N.
D /S - Normal position for driving forward
In the D/S pos it ion, the transmission can be
operated ei ther in the norma l D mode or in
the S spo rt mode . To select the S sport mode,
pull the selector lever back briefly. Pu lling the
lever back again will se lect the norma l D
mode. The instrument cl uster display shows
the selected dr iving mode .
In the
normal mode D, the transmission auto­
matically selects the best gear ratio. It de ­
pends on engine load , vehicle speed and the
dynamic contro l program (DRP).
Se lect the
s port mode S for sporty driving.
T he vehicle makes full use of the engine 's
power . Shift ing is more noticeable when accel­
erating.
When the vehicle is stationary or at speeds below 3 mph (5 km/h), you must always app ly
the foot brake before and while moving the
lever to D/S out of
N.
In certain circumstances it may be advanta ­
geous to temporar ily sw itch to the manua l
shift program to manua lly select gear ratios
to match specific driving conditions

adjust the sporty shift characteristics in
the
Dynamic driving mode. 5 will appear in
the instrument cluster display instead of
D.
Automatic Shift Lock (ASL)
Applies to vehicles: with tiptro nic
The Automatic Shift Lock safeguards you
against accidentally shifting into a forward or
the reverse gear and causing the vehicle to
move unintentionally .

The selector lever lock is released as follows :

Automatic selector lever lock
The selector lever is locked in the P and N po ­
sitions when the ignition is turned on. You
must press the brake pedal and the interlock
button to select another position . As a re­
minder to the driver, the following warning
appears in the instrument cluster display
when the se lector is in P and N :
When stationary apply brake pedal while se­
lecting gear
A time delay element prevents the selector
lever from locking when it is moved through
the N position (going from R to D/5) . The lock- Transmission 85
ing element will lock the selector lever if the
lever is left in N (Neutral) for more than ap­
proximately 1 second, without the brake ped­
al being pressed .
At speeds above about 3 mph (5 km/h) the
Automatic Shift Lock is automatically deacti­
vated in the N position.
Interlock button
The lock button on the selector lever prevents
the lever from being accidentally sh ifted into
certain positions. Pressing this button deacti­
vates the selector lever lock . Depending on
the direction of the shift, the selector lever
locks at different positions . The positions are
highlighted in the illustration

Ignition key safety interlock
The key cannot be removed from the ignition
unless the selector lever is in the P park posi­
tion. When the ignition key is removed, the
selector lever will be locked in the P position.
Kick-down

The kick-down feature allows the vehicle to
generate maximum acceleration .
When you press the accelerator pedal beyond
the resistance point that is reached at full
throttle, the transmission will select a lower
gear ratio based on vehicle speed and engine
RPM . The engine RPM will be controlled to
produce max imum veh icle acceleration as
long as you continue to press the accelerator
pedal beyond this resistance point .
,8. WARNING
Please note that the drive wheels can spin
if kick-down is used on a smooth slippery
road - there is a risk of skidding.

Emergency release of the selector lever

If the vehicle's power supply foils, the selec­
tor lever con be released in on emergency.

The emergency release is located under the in­
sert for the ashtray.
.. Slide open the cover for the ashtray.
.. Release the ashtray by push ing the switch
@¢fig. 88 to the right.
.. Remove the ashtray insert@.
.. Now you can see a small cover in the ash­
tray holder on the front of the ashtray re­
cess.
.. Re lease and remove this cover .
.. You now have access to a bolt. Using a
screwdriver or similar, press the bolt down
and hold it down ¢

.. Now press the interlock and move the selec-
tor lever to the N pos ition .
The selector lever can only be moved from the
P position if the ignition key is in the lock and
the ignition is turned on. If the vehicle has to
be pushed or towed if the power supply fa ils
(e.g. battery is discharged), the selector lever
must first be moved to the N position using
the emergency locking device.
S tronic ®
Introduction
Applies to vehicles: with S tronic transm ission
Your vehicle is equipped with an electronical­
ly-controlled manual transmission called S
tronic ®. Two independent clutches transfer
the power between the engine and transmis­
sion . They rep lace the torque converter used
in conventional automatic transmissions and
allow the vehicle to accelerate without a no­
ticeable interruption in traction.
You can also shift the gears
manually using
tiptronic , if you like ¢ page 92.
Selector lever positions

The instrument cluster display shows the cur­
rent se lector lever position and current gear .
P -Park
The wheels are mechanically locked in this po­
sition. You can only shift into Park when the
vehicle is
stationary ¢ /1. .
To shift in and out of P, press the interlock
button in the selector lever
while press ing the
brake pedal.
R - Reverse
Only shift into reverse gear when the vehicle is
stationary and the engine is running at idle
speed ¢

To select R, press the interlock button while
pressing the brake pedal. The back-up lights
switch on in the R position if the ignition is
switched on .

N -Neutral
The transmission is in idle in this position.
DIS -Normal position for driving forward
In the 0/5 position , the transmission can be
operated either in the normal D mode or in
the 5 sport mode. To select the S sport mode ,
pull the se lector lever back briefly. Pulling the
lever back again will select the normal D
mode. The instrument cluster disp lay shows
the selected driving mode.
I n the
normal mode D, the transmission auto­
matica lly selects the best gear ratio . It de­
pends on engine load, vehicle speed and the
dynamic control program (DRP).
Select the
sport mode S for sporty driv ing.
The vehicle makes full use of the engine's
power. Shifting is more noticeable when accel­
erating.
When the vehicle is stationary or at speeds below 3 mph (5 km/h), you must always apply

A WARNING
-Never select R or P while driving.
- Power is stil l transmitted to the wheels
when the eng ine is running at idle. To
prevent the vehicle from "creeping", you
must keep your foot on the brake in all
selector lever positions (except P) when
the engine is running. Do not inadver­
tent ly press the accelerator pedal when
the vehicle is stopped if a gear is engag­
ed . Otherwise the vehicle will start to
move immediately. This could happen
even if the parking brake is activated.
- Before opening the hood and working on
a running engine, select P with the se lec­
tor lever and activate the parking brake.

@ Tips
- On vehicles with Audi drive select*, you
can adjust the sporty shift characteristics
in the
Dynamic driving mode.Swill ap­

- If you accidentally select N while driving,
take your foot off the accelerator pedal
immediately and wait for the engine to
slow down to idle before selecting D/S.
- If there is a power failure, the selector
lever will not move out of the P position .

. Selector lever lock
Applies to vehicles: with S tronic transmission
The selector lever lock prevents you from se ­
lecting a gear accidentally , causing the vehi­
cle to roll .

Automatic shift lock (ASL)
The selector lever is locked in the P and N po ­
sitions when the ignition is turned on . You
must press the brake pedal and the interlock
button to select another position. As a re­
minder to the driver, the following warning
appears in the instrument cluster display
when the selector is in P and N:

You can set any speed between 20 mph and
95 mph (30 and 150 km/h).
Indicator lamps and messages in the instru­
ment cluster display inform you about the cur­
r ent system status and settings.

Based on the symbols in the display, you can
determine if the system is maintai ning a d is ­
tance to the vehicle ahead and what that dis­
tance is.
No vehicle -No vehicle ahead was de tected .
White vehicle -A vehicle ahead was detected .
Red vehicle -Prompt for the driver to take ac­
tion

Both arrows on the scale© indicate the dis­
tance to the vehicle ahead. No arrow appears
when the vehicle is on an open road and there
is no object ahead. If an object is detected
ahead, the arrow moves on the scale .
T he green zone on the scale shows the stored
distance. For information on changing the
stored distance, refe r to ~
page 100 . If the
distance se lected is too close or may soon be ­
com e too close , the arrows move into the re d

A WARNING
Imprope r use of the adaptive cruise con­
trol can cause collis ions, other acc idents
and serious personal injuries.
- Pressing the
ISE TI button whe n driving at
speeds below 20 mph (30 km/h), will au­
tomat ica lly accelerate the veh icle to
20 mph (30 km/h), which is the m ini­
mum speed that can be set.
@ Tips
- If you switch the ignition or the adapt ive
cruise control off, the set speed is erased
from the system memory.
- The elect ronic stabilization control (ESC)
and the a nti-slip-regulation (ASR) are au­
tomatically tu rned on when the adaptive
cruise control is turned on. Both systems
cannot be turned off if the adaptive
cruise control is turned on.

~ To increase or reduce the distance by incre­
ments, tap the switch again to the left or
right. The distance between the two veh icles
will change in the instrument cluster dis­
play.
When approaching a moving vehicle up ahead,
the adaptive cru ise cont rol system brakes to
matc h that object's speed and then maintains
the stored distance. If the vehicle ahead ac­
celerates, adaptive cruise control will a lso ac ­
celerate up to the stored speed.
The higher the speed, the greater the distance
in yards (meters)¢ ,&.. T he
Distance 3 setting
is recommended .
The distances p rov ided are spec ified values.
Depending on the driving situation and the
how the vehicle ahead is dr iving, the actual
distance may be more or less than these tar­
get distances .
The various symbols fo r the time increments

tings .

sponds to a distance of 92 feet/28 meters
when traveling at 62 mph (100 km/h), or a
time interva l of 1 second.

sponds to a distance of 118 feet/36 meters
when traveling at 62 mph (100 km/h), or a
time interval of 1.3 seconds .

sponds to a distance of 164 feet/SO meters
when traveling at 62 mph (100 km/h), or a
t ime interval of 1.8 seconds.

A WARNING
Following other veh icles too closely in­
creases the risk of collis ions and ser ious
personal injury.
- Sett ing short distances to the traffic
ahead reduces the time and d istance
availab le to bring your vehicle to a safe
stop and makes it even more necessary
to pay close attention to traffic.

-Always obey applicab le traffic laws, use
good judgment, and se lect a safe follow­
ing distance for the traffic, road and
weather conditions .

-Distance 3 is set automatically each time
you switch the ignition on.

- If a co llision is imminent, the system will
first provide an
acute warning by bri efly and
sharp ly app ly ing the brakes .
- If you do not react to the ac ute warning ,
braking guard can brake within the limits of
the system. This reduces the veh icle speed
in the event of a collis ion.
- At speeds under 20 mph (30 km/h), the sys ­
tem can in it iate a complete deceleration
s hortly before a collision .

- If the Audi braking guard senses that you
are not braking hard enough when a colli­
sion is imminent, it can increase the braking
force .
Which functions can be contr oll ed ?
You can sw itch Audi braking g uard and the
distance/approach warning on or off in the ra­
d io or MMI Qpage 102, Set tings in the ra­
dio/MM!.
A WARNING
Lack of attention can cause col lisions, oth­
er accidents and serious persona l injuries.
The Audi b raking guard is an assist system
and cannot prevent a collis ion by itself.
The driver must always intervene. The dr iv­
er is always responsible for braking at the
correct time.
- Always pay close attention to traffic,
even when the Audi braking guard is
switched on. Be ready to intervene and
be ready to take comp lete control when­
ever necessary. Always keep the safe and
legal distance between your vehicle and
vehicles up ahead .
- Audi braking guard works within limits
and w ill not respond outs ide the system
limits, for examp le when approaching a
stopped vehicle or stationary obstacle
(end of a traff ic jam or veh icle that has
broken down in traffic).
- Always remember that the radar s ensor
for the A udi braking guard works only
within defined detect ion and range limits

that may prevent the proper detection of
other veh icles.
- The radar sensor's function and range
can be reduced by rain, snow and heavy
spray. Moving veh icles up ahead may not
be prompt ly detected or may not be de­
tected at all .
- Reflective surfaces including crash barri­
ers or tunne l entrances may impair the
function of the radar sensor .

- You can cancel the braking that is in it iat­
ed by the system by braking yourse lf, by
accelerating not iceably or by swerving .
- Audi braking guard error messages

- Keep in mind that brak ing guard can
brake unexpectedly. Always secure any
cargo or objects that you are transport­
ing to reduce the risk of damage or in­
jury .
