NOTICEECB00551If measurement “A” of the drive chain slack ad-
justing bolt is less than 27 mm (1.06 in), have a
Yamaha dealer replace the drive chain.
6. Tighten the hub stopper bolt and hub stopper
bolt locknut to the specified torques.EBU24882Lubricating the drive chain The drive chain must be cleaned and lubricated at
the intervals specified in the periodic maintenance
and lubrication chart, otherwise it will quickly wear
out, especially when riding in dusty or wet areas.
Service the drive chain as follows.NOTICEECB00561The drive chain must be lubricated after wash-
ing the ATV or riding in the rain or wet areas.1. Clean the drive chain with kerosene and a
small soft brush. NOTICE: To prevent dam-
aging the O-rings, do not clean the drive
chain with steam cleaners, high-pressure
washers or inappropriate solvents.

3. Thoroughly lubricate the drive chain with a
special O-ring chain lubricant. NOTICE: Do
not use engine oil or any other lubricants
for the drive chain, as they may contain
substances that could damage the O-
rings.

Checking and lubricating the cables The operation and the condition of all control ca-
bles should be checked before each ride, and the
cables and cable ends should be lubricated if nec-essary. If a cable is damaged or does not move
smoothly, have a Yamaha dealer check or replace
it.
WARNING
EWB02581Inspect cables frequently and replace if dam-
aged. Corrosion can result when the cable
sheaths become damaged, and cables can
also become frayed or kinked, which could
restrict the operation of controls and lead to
an accident or injury.Always make sure all control cables work
smoothly before you begin riding in cold
weather. If the control cables are frozen or do
not work smoothly, you could be unable to
control the ATV, which could lead to an acci-
dent or collision.

checked at the intervals specified in the periodic
maintenance and lubrication chart. If there is play
in a wheel hub or if a wheel does not turn smoothly,
have a Yamaha dealer check the wheel hub bear-
ings. Recommended lubricant:

EBU25129Battery The battery is located under the seat. (See page
4-10.)
A poorly maintained battery will corrode and dis-
charge quickly. The electrolyte level, battery lead
connections and breather hose routing should be
checked before each ride and at the intervals
specified in the periodic maintenance and lubrica-
tion chart.
WARNING
EWB02160Battery electrolyte is poisonous and danger-
ous, as it contains sulfuric acid, which can
cause severe burns. Avoid contact with skin,
eyes or clothing. Always shield your eyes
when working near batteries.
Antidote:
EXTERNAL: Flush with water.
INTERNAL: Drink large quantities of water or
milk. Follow with milk of magnesia, beaten egg
or vegetable oil. Call a physician immediately.
EYES: Flush with water for 15 minutes and get
prompt medical attention.Batteries produce explosive gases. Keep
sparks, flame, cigarettes or other sources of ig-
nition away. Ventilate when charging or using
in an enclosed space.
KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.
To check the electrolyte level
1. Place the ATV on a level surface.
2. Check the electrolyte level in the battery.TIPThe electrolyte should be between the minimum
and maximum level marks.1. Maximum level mark

8 3. If the electrolyte is at or below the minimum
level mark, add distilled water to raise it to the
maximum level mark. NOTICE: Use only dis-
tilled water, as tap water contains minerals
that are harmful to the battery.
[ECB00591]
4. Check and, if necessary, tighten the battery
lead connections and correct the breather
hose routing.To remove the battery
1. Disconnect the negative lead first and then the
positive lead. NOTICE: When removing the
battery, the main switch must be off, and
the negative lead must be disconnected
before the positive lead.
[ECB01001]
2. Remove the battery.
To store the batteryIf the ATV will not be used for more than one
month, remove the battery, fully charge it, and
then place it in a cool, dry place.

If the battery will be stored for more than two
months, check the specific gravity of the electro-
lyte at least once a month and fully charge the
battery whenever necessary.NOTICEECB01100Always keep the battery charged. Storing a
discharged battery can cause permanent
battery damage.Do not leave or store the battery on its side.To install the batteryTIPBe sure the battery is fully charged.1. Install the battery.
2. Connect the positive lead first, and then con-
nect the negative lead. NOTICE: When in-
stalling the battery, the main switch must
be off, and the positive lead must be con-
nected before the negative lead.
[ECB01110]
3. Make sure that the breather hose is properly
routed, in good condition, and not obstructed.
NOTICE: If the breather hose is positioned
in such a way that the frame is exposed to
electrolyte or gas expelled from the bat-
tery, the frame could suffer structural and
external damages.
