Eco-friendly driving (vehicles with Eco Driving Indicator Light)
Idling time before engine stop (diesel engine)
To prevent damage to the turbocharger, allow the engine to idle immediately
after high-speed driving or hill climbing.
Operating your vehicle in a foreign country
Comply with the relevant vehicle registration laws and confirm the availability
of the correct fuel. (P. 547)
During Eco-friendly acceleration (Eco
driving), Eco Driving Indicator Light will
turn on. When the acceleration exceeds
Zone of Eco driving, and when the vehicle
is stopped, the light turns off.
Eco Driving Indicator Light will not oper-
ate in any of the following conditions:
The shift position is anything other than
“D”.
The driving mode is set to “SPORT”
mode. (P. 197, 203)
The paddle shift switch is operated
while the shift position is “D”.
The vehicle speed is approximately 130
km/h (80 mph) or higher.
Eco Driving Indicator Light can be acti-
vated or deactivated. (P. 235)

Selecting a shift position
*1: To improve fuel consumption and reduce noises, set the shift lever in
the “D” position for normal driving.
*2: If equipped, by selecting gear step using paddle shift switches, you can
control engine braking forces.
Selecting a driving mode
Press the switch.

Automatic deactivation of “SPORT” mode
Vehicles without smart entry & start system
If the engine switch is turned to the “LOCK” position after driving in
“SPORT” mode, the mode is automatically deactivated.
Vehicles with smart entry & start system
If the “ENGINE START STOP” switch is turned OFF after driving in
“SPORT” mode, the mode is automatically deactivated.
If the shift lever cannot be shifted from “P”
P. 522
If the “M” indicator is not displayed after shifting the shift lever to the
“M” position
If the display does not change to “M” on an occasion other than that
described above, it may indicate a malfunction in the transmission system.
Have your vehicle inspected by any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or
another duly qualified and equipped professional immediately.
Automatic gear step selection
When the vehicle comes to a stop, the transmission will automatically down-
shift to allow you to start off in 1st step.

Paddle shift switch (if equipped)
When the “-” paddle shift switch is operated in the “D” position, a shift
range will be automatically selected. The highest gear of the first shift
range will be one gear lower than the gear in use during normal “D” posi-
tion driving.
Automatic deactivation of shift range selection in the “D” position.
Shift range selection in the “D” position will be deactivated in the follow-
ing situations:
• The “+” paddle shift switch is held down for a period of time
• When the vehicle comes to a stop
• If the accelerator pedal is depressed for longer than a certain period of
time in one shift range
Downshifting restrictions warning buzzer
To help ensure safety and driving performance, downshifting operation may
sometimes be restricted. In some circumstances, downshifting may not be
possible even when the shift lever or paddle shift switches (if equipped) is
operated. (The warning buzzer will sound twice.)
When driving with the cruise control system
Engine braking will not occur during shift range selection in the “D” position,
even when downshifting to range “5” or “4”. (P. 252)
Automatic deactivation of “SPORT” mode
Vehicles without smart entry & start system
If the engine switch is turned to the “LOCK” position after driving in
“SPORT” mode, the mode is automatically deactivated.
Vehicles with smart entry & start system
If the “ENGINE START STOP” switch is turned OFF after driving in
“SPORT” mode, the mode is automatically deactivated.

Eco Driving Indicator Zone Display (if equipped)
When the acceleration exceeds the Zone of Eco driving, the system recog-
nizes that the vehicle is not being driven in Eco-friendly manner. Eco Driv-
ing Indicator Light turns off and the right side of Eco Driving Indicator Zone
Display blinks.
Also, the system will not be operated if the following conditions are met
while driving:
The shift position is anything other than “D”
The driving mode is set to “SPORT” mode
The paddle shift switch is operated while the shift position is “D”
The vehicle speed is approximately 130 km/h (80 mph) or higher
Rear seat belt reminder buzzer (vehicles with rear seat)
The rear seat belts reminder sounds to alert the rear passenger that his/her
seat belt is not fastened. The buzzer sounds for 30 seconds after the vehi-
cle has reached a speed of at least 20 km/h (12 mph). Then, if the seat belt
is still unfastened, the buzzer will sound in a different tone for 90 more sec-
onds.
Eco Driving Indicator indicates the range
where acceleration is Eco-friendly, “Zone
of Eco driving” and Eco driving ratio
based on acceleration.

When driving
VERSO_WE_OM64524EImportant points regarding turning
The wheels of the trailer will travel closer to the inside of the curve
than the wheels of the vehicle. To make allowance for this, take the
turns wider than you would normally.
Important points regarding stability
Vehicle movement resulting from uneven road surfaces and strong
crosswinds will affect handling. The vehicle may also be rocked by
passing buses or large trucks. Frequently check behind when mov-
ing alongside such vehicles. As soon as such vehicle movement
occurs, immediately start to decelerate smoothly by slowly apply-
ing the brakes. Always steer the vehicle straight ahead while brak-
ing.
Passing other vehicles
Consider the total combined length of your vehicle and trailer, and
ensure that the vehicle-to-vehicle distance is sufficient before exe-
cuting lane changes.
Transmission information
Multidrive or automatic transmission
To maintain engine braking efficiency, when using engine brak-
ing, do not use the transmission in “D”. Transmission shift gear
position must be in “4” in the 7-speed sport sequential shiftmatic
mode (Multidrive) (P. 196) or the “M” mode (automatic trans-
mission) (P. 202).
Manual transmission
To maintain engine braking efficiency, when using engine brak-
ing, do not use the transmission in “5” and “6” gear. (P. 209)
When towing a trailer, check the engine coolant temperature
warning light (Red)
Towing a loaded trailer up a long steep incline in temperatures
exceeding 30C (85F) may result in the engine overheating.
If the engine coolant temperature warning light (Red) flashes or
comes on, turn the air conditioning off immediately and stop the
vehicle in a safe place. (P. 532)
