andmakesureothersdo,too.Accidentsta
tisticsshowthatvehicleoccupantsproperly
wearing
safetybeltshave alower riskofbeing
injured
andamuchbetterchanceofsurviving
anaccident. Properlyusingsafetybeltsalso
greatlyincreasestheabilityofthesupplemen
talairbagstodotheirjobinacollision. For
this
reason,wearingasafetybeltis legally re
quired
inmostcountriesincludingmuchof
theUnitedStatesandCanada.
Although
yourAudiisequippedwithairbags,
you still have
towearthesafetybeltsprovid
ed. Front
airbags,forexample,areactivated
onlyinsomefrontalcollisions. Thefrontair
bagsarenotactivatedinallfrontalcollisions,
insideandrearcollisions,inrolloversorin
caseswherethereisnotenoughdeceleration
throughimpacttothefrontofthevehicle.

Whentheairbagsystemdeploys,agasgener
atorwillfilltheairbags,breakopenthepad
dedcovers,andinflatebetweenthesteering
wheelandthedriverandbetweentheinstru
mentpanelandthefrontpassenger.The air
bagswilldeftateimmediatelyafterdeploy
ment50thatthefrontoccupantscansee
throuflhthewindshield againwithoutinter
ruption.
Allofthistakesplaceintheblinkofaneye,50
fastthatmanypeopledon'teven realizethat
theairbagshavedeployed.Theairbagsalso
inflatewithagreatdealofforceandnothing
shouldbeintheirwaywhentheydeploy.
Front
airbagsincombinationwith properly
worn
safetybeltsslowdownandlimittheoc
cupant'sforwardmovement.Togetherthey
helptopreventthedriverandfrontseatpas
sengerfromhittingpartsoftheinsidetheve
hicle while reducing
theforces actingonthe
occupantduringthecrash.Inthiswaythey
helptoreducetheriskofinjurytothehead
andupperbodyinthecrash.Airbagsdonot
protectthearmsorthelowerpartsofthe
body.
Both
frontairbagswillnotinflateinallfrontal
collisions. Thetriggeringoftheairbagsystem
dependsonthevehicledecelerationrate
causedbythecollisionandregisteredbythe
electroniccontrolunit.Ifthisrateisbelow
thereferencevalueprogrammedintothecon
trolunit,theairbagswillnotbetriggered,
eventhoughthecarmay bebadlydamagedas
a
resultofthecollision. Vehicledamage,re
pair
costsoreventhelackofvehicledamage
isnotnecessarilyanindicationofwhetheran
airbagshouldinflateornot.~

Ttisnotpossibletodefinearangeofvehicle
speedsthatwillcoyereverypossible kindand
angleofimpactthatwillalwaystriggerthe
airbags,sincethecircumstanceswillvary con
siderably
betweenonecollisionandanother.
Importantfactorsinclude, forexample,the
nature(hardorsoft)oftheobjectwhichthe
carhits,theangleofimpact,vehiclespeed,
etc.Thefrontairbagswillalsonotinflatein
sideorrearcollisions,orinroll-overs.
Always
remember:Airbags willdeployonly
once,
andonlyincertainkindsofcollisions.
Your
safetybeltsarealwaystheretoofferpro
tectioninthosesituationsinwhichairbags
arenotsupposedtodeploy,orwhentheyhave
alreadydeployed;forexample,whenyourve
hicle
strikesorisstruckbyanotherafterthe
firstcollision.
This
isjustoneofthereasonswhy anairbagis
asupplementaryrestraintandisnotasubsti
tuteforasafetybelt.Theairbagsystem
worksmosteffectivelywhenusedwiththe
safetybelts.Therefore,alwaysproperlywear
yoursafetybeltsqpage103.

dangerousplace forachildtoride.
The
frontseatisnotthesafestplacefora

SafetyStandard208withwhich
theAdvanced AirbagSysteminyourvehicle

componentsisdetected.Thefunctionofthe

seatcontainsimportantpartsoftheAd
