You can manually stop the automatic open­ ing/closing of the rear lid. The automatic clos­
ing process begins if you push down on the
rear lid .
A WARNING
-After closing the rear lid, always pull up
on it to make sure that it is properly
closed . Otherwise it could ope n suddenly
when the vehicle is moving .
- To help prevent poisonous exhaust gas from being drawn into the vehicle, al­
ways keep the rear lid closed wh ile driv­
ing. Never transpo rt objects la rger than
those which fit complete ly into the lug ­
gage area, beca use then the rear lid can ­
not be fu lly closed .
- Never leave your veh icle unattended es­
pecia lly with the rear lid left open. A
child cou ld craw l into the car through the
luggage compartment and pu ll the lid
shut, becoming trapped and unable to
get out. To reduce the risk of personal in­
jury, never let c hildren play in or around
your ve hicle. Always keep the rear lid as
well as the vehicle doors closed when not i n use .
- Never close the rear lid inattentively o r
without check ing first . Although the
clos ing force of the rear lid is limited,
you can still serious ly injure yourself or
others.
- Always ensure that no one is within
range of the rear lid when it is moving, in
particular close to the hinges and the up­
per and lower edges -fingers or hands
can be pinched.
- Never try to interfere with the rear lid or
he lp it when it is be ing opened or closed
automatically.

The rear lid can bump into ob jects such as
the garage ceiling when opening and be­
come damaged .

Why is your seat adjustment so
important?
The safety belts and the airbag system can
only provide maximum protection if the front
seats are correctly adjusted.
There are various ways of adjust ing the front
seats to provide safe and comfortable support
for the driver and the front passenger . Adjust
you r seat prope rly so that :
- you can easily and quick ly reach all the
switches and controls in the instrument
panel
-your body is prope rly supported thus reduc­
ing physical stress and fatigue
- the safety be lts and a irbag system can offer
maximum protection

In the following sec tions, you will see exactly
how you can best adjust you r seats .
There are special regulations and instructions
for insta lling a child seat on the front pas­
senger's seat. Always fo llow the information
regarding ch ild safety provided in
q page 163, Child Safety.
A WARNING
Incorrect seating position of the driver and
all other passengers can result in serious
personal in jury.
- Always keep your feet on the floor when
the vehicle is in motion -never p ut your
f eet on top of the instrument panel, out
of the w indow or on top of the seat cush­
ion . Th is app lies especially to the passen­
gers .
If your seating position is incorrect,
yo u increase the r isk of injury in the case
of sudden braking or an acc ident.
If the
a irbag infla tes and the seating positio n
is incorrect, this could result in personal
injury o r even death.
- It is import ant for bo th the driver and
front passenger to keep a distance of at least 10 inches (25 cm) between them­
selves and the steering wheel and/or in­
strument panel. If you're s itting any
closer than th is, the a irbag system can­
not protect you properly . In addition, the
front seats and head restraints must be
adjusted to your body height so that they
can give you max imum protect ion.
- Always try to keep as much distance as
possible between yourself and the steer­
ing wheel o r inst rument pane l.
- Do not adjust the driver's o r front pas­
senger's seat whi le the vehicle is moving.
Your sea t may move unexpected ly, caus­
ing sudden loss of vehicle cont rol and
personal injury . If yo u adjust yo ur seat
while the veh icle is moving, yo u are out
of posit ion.
Driver's seat '
The correct seat position is important for safe
and relaxed driving.
We recommend tha t you adjus t the dr iver's
seat in the fo llowing manner :
.,. Adjust t he seat in fo re and aft direction so
t ha t you can eas ily push the peda ls to the
floor w hile keeping your knees sl igh tly bent

.. Adjust the back rest so that when you sit
w ith your back against t he backrest, you can
still grasp the top of the steering wheel.
.. Adjust the head restraint so the upper edge
is as even as poss ible with the top of your
head . If that is not poss ible , try to adjust
t he head restraint so that it is as close to
t his pos it ion as possib le

A WARNING
Neve r place any objects in the dr iver's foot ­
well. An object could get into the pedal
a rea and interfere with pedal function . In
case of sudden braking or an acc ident, you
would not be able to brake or accelerate .

Opening the storage compartment

Please note that the driver's arm movements
may be restr icted w ith the armrest fo lded
down. For this reason, the arm rest should not

We recommend using roof racks from the
Audi original accessories program.
- T he support feet of the roof rack must al­
ways be insta lled in the holes in the roof
frame ~
fig. 58 . The holes are only visible
when the doors are open . In the case of roof
racks with pins, the pins must be secured in
the holes during assembly.
- We recommend that you keep the installa­
tion instructions for your roof rack system
together with your Owner's literature in the
vehicle.
Wh en sh ould the roo f ra ck be re mo ved ?
-Before going through an automatic car wash
(it is best to ask the car wash operator for
advice).
- When not in use, to reduce fuel consump­
tion, wind no ise and to guard against theft.
A WARNING
-Use of an unapproved roof rack or incor­
rect mount ing of an approved roof rack
can cause the roof rack o r the items at­
tached to it to fa ll off the roof onto the
road.
- Objects fall ing from the roof of a vehicle
can cause a crash and persona l injury.
- Only mount the roof rack on the desig­
nated locations o n the roof ~

-The roof rack system must be installed
exactly according to the instructions pro­
vided.
- When driving w ith a roof rack system,
changes to the center of g ravity and wind
resistance ca n cha nge the veh icle han­
dling and lead to a collision. A lways
adapt yo ur driv ing and you r speed to the
c u rrent conditions.
(D Note
- Your vehi cle warranty does not cover any
damages to the veh icle caused by using
r oof racks or mo unt ing structures not
approved by Audi for your vehicle. The
same applies to damage resulting from
i ncorrect roof rack installation. - Always check the roof rack mountings
and hardware before each trip and dur­
ing a trip to make s ure everyth ing is se ­
curely tightened.
If necessary, ret ighten
the mountings and check the entire sys­
tem from time to time.
- After mounting a roof rack system, or
when you transport objects on the roof
of your vehicle, the height of the veh icle
is naturally increased. Be careful when
dr iving unde r low bridges or in parking
garages for example. This cou ld cause
damage to the load and even the vehicle
itself .
- Ma ke sure the open rear lid and the sun­
roo f* do not come into contact with the
roo f rack .
Loading the roof rack
Always distribute loads evenly. Make sure
anything on the roof rack is securely tied
down .
.,. Always distrib ute the loads on the roof rack
even ly .
.,. Always attach items to the roof rack secure-
ly before you drive off.
T he maxim um permissible roof weight is
220
lb (100 kg ).
The roof weig ht is the tota l of
the weight of the roof rack, the attachments
and the cargo you are carrying. You must a lso
not exceed the maximum load weight for the
roof rack you are using.
When using a roof rack system which has a
l ower load carrying capacity, you must not use
up the total maxim um permissible load carry­
ing capacity specif ied above. Instead, you
shou ld load the roof rack system only to the
maximum capacity specified by the manufac­
tu rer of the roof rack system .

ment and improper seating position can

- Adjust the steering whee l co lumn on ly
when the veh icle is not moving to pre­
vent loss of veh icle control.

- Adjust the driver's seat or steering wheel
so that there is a minimum of 10 inches
(25 cm) between your chest and the
steering wheel

you cannot maintain this min imum dis- tance, the airbag system cannot protect
you proper ly.
- If physical limitations prevent you from
sitting 10 inches (25 cm) or more from
the steering wheel, check with your au­
thorized Audi dealer to see if adaptive equ ipment is ava ilable .
- If t he steer ing wheel is aligned with your
face, the supplementa l driver's a irbag
cannot provide as much protection in an
accident . Always make sure that the
steer ing wheel is aligned with your
chest.
- Always hold the steering wheel w ith your
hands at the 9 o'clock and 3 o' clock posi­
tions to reduce the risk of persona l injury
if the driver's airbag dep loys .
- Never hold the stee ring wheel at the 12
o'clock position or wi th your hands inside
the steeri ng wheel rim or on the steering
wheel hub . Ho lding the steering wheel
the wrong way can cause se rious injuries
to the hands, arms and head if the driv­
er's airbag deploys.
Electrically adjustable steering wheel

summarized here what you need to know

well as child safety. Your safety is for us

ty number 1.

The information in this se ction app lies to all
model ve rsions of your veh icle . Some of the
feat ures desc ribed in this sec tions may be
standard equipment on some models, or may
be optional equipment on others . If you are
not sure, ask your authorized Aud i dealer.
A WARNING
- Always make sure that you follow the in­
struct ions and heed the WARNINGS in
this Manual. It is in your interest and in
the inte rest of you r passengers.

The safety features are part of the occupant
restraint system and work together to help
redu ce the risk of injury in a wide variety of
accident situations.
Your safety and the safety of your passenge rs
should not be left to chance. Advances in
technology have made a varie ty o f fea tures
avai la bl e to he lp re duce the risk of inj ury in an accident
. The following is a list of just a few of
the safety features in your Audi:

Important things to do before driving
Safety is everybody 's job! Vehicle and occu ­
pant safety always depends on the informed and careful driver .
For your safety and the safety of your passen ­
gers,

Use the height adjustment to change the posi­
tion of the shoulder belt of the front saf ety
belts.
.&_ WARNING
Improperly positioned safety belts can
cause serious personal injury in an acci­
dent .
- The shoulder belt portion of the safety
belt must be positioned over the middle
of the occupant's shoulder and never
across the neck or throat.
- The safety belt must lie flat and snug on
the occupant's upper body

Pull on the belt to tighten if necessary .

-The lap belt portion of the safety belt
must be positioned as low as possible
across pelvis and never over the abdo­
men. Make sure the belt lies flat and
snug

- A loose-fitt ing safety belt can cause seri­
ous injuries by shifting its position on
your body from the strong bones to more
vulnerable, soft tissue and cause serious
injury.

restrained
The best way to protect the fetu s is to make
sure that expec tan t mothers always wear
safety belts correctly -throughout the preg­
nancy .
