AUTO -Automatic headlight control*
With the switch in the AUTO position, the low
beams are swi tched on automatically depend­
ing on the ambient light, for example in a tun­
ne l, at dusk and when it is raining or snowing.
When the low beams are switched on, the
:oo:
symbol comes on. The low beams remain
switched on regardless of the ambient light
when you turn on the fog lights .
When you turn
off the ignition, the low beams
are automatically switched
off.
On vehicles w ith a rain sensor* the headlights
switch on automatica lly after a few wind-

shield wiper passes. However, the instrument
lighting will not be switched on.
Wi th a utomatic head light cont ro l, you also
have the high-beam function available. How­
ever, if you have not switched high beams
back to low beams while driving with auto­
matic headlight control, only the low beams
come on the next time yo u turn on automatic
headlight control. In order to return to high
beams aga in, you first have to pull the high
beam lever back to the normal position and
then push the lever forward .
Light sensor* malfunction
In the event of a light sensor* ma lfunction,
the driver is not ified in the instrument cluster
display:

For safety reasons, the low beams are turned
on permanently with the switch in
AUTO.
However, you can continue to turn the lights
on and
off using the light switch . Have the
light sensor checked as soon as possible at an
authorized Aud i dealer or other qualified
workshop.
A WARNING
Automatic h eadlights are only intended to
assist the d river. They do not relieve the
driver of his responsib ility to che ck the
headlights and to turn them on manually
according to the current light and visibility
conditions. For example, fog cannot be de­
tected by the light sensors. So a lways
switch on the headlights gD under these
weather conditions and when driving in
the dark.
(D Tips
- The light sensor* for headlight control is
located in the rear view mirror mount.
You should therefore not apply any stick­
ers to the windshield in th is area in order
to prevent malfunct ions or fai lures .
- The sensitivity level for the light sensor*
set at t he factory can be changed in the ..,_

- When you remove your key from the igni­
tion wh ile the vehicle's lights a re turned
on, a buzze r sounds as long as the driv­
er's door is open.

Fog lights

Rear fog lights

Coming home*
T he coming home funct ion ensures tha t after
turning off the ignition and opening the
driver' s door
the veh icle per iphery is illum i­
nated in the da rk . I n addition, the front fog
lights, the tai l lights and the License plate
li ght are turned on. The power -on t ime can be
set for a per iod from O (off) to 30 or 60 sec­
onds.
Leav ing home*
The leaving home functions ensures that
when unlo cking , the vehicle perip hery is illu­
minated in the dark . In add it ion, the front fog
lights, the tail Lights and the license plate
light are turned on. This function can be
tu rned on and off .
Auto headlights*
When the light switch is in the AUTO
r=> page 49 position, the switch-on point of the
lights can be changed in the automatic driving
li ght function.
Daytime running lights
The daytime r unning lights can be turned on
or off using this function* . If the f unction is
active, the dayt ime runn ing lights are turned
on automatically when the ignition is sw itch­
ed on .

Warm and cold Deluxe automatic
climate control
Description
Appl ies to vehicles: with deluxe automatic cl imate contro l
The climate control system can be u sed to set
a comfortable temperature inside the vehicle.
The climate control system is a comb inat ion
of a heating and ventilation system as well a
coo ling system respons ible for dehum idifying
and cool ing the a ir inside the vehicle.
The automat ic climate co ntrol system auto­
mat ica lly ma inta ins a temperature once it has
been set. The temperature of t he a ir from the
ve nts, fan speed (ai r volume) and air dis trib u­
tion are also au toma tic ally adjusted . The sys ­
tem a lso takes into account strong sun light so
that manua l adjustment is not necessary . So
in almost a ll cases,
automatic mode offers
the best cond itions for the comfort of the oc­
cupa nts at all t imes of the year
c;, page 81 .
Please note the following:
The cooling mode lowers the hum idi ty leve l
ins ide the veh icle. This p reven ts fogging up of
the windows .
I n t he case of high outside humidity and tem­
pe rat ures,
condensation c an drip from the air
conditioning sys tem evaporator and form a
pool under the vehicle. This is normal and not
an indication of leaks!
A t l ow ou ts ide temper atures, the f an au to­
mat ica lly switches to a higher speed when the
coolant reac hes a sufficient temperature ex ­
cept in the defroster pos ition.
W hen sta rting with full thro ttle, the compres­
sor of the automatic clima te con trol sys tem is
temporari ly switched off to achieve f ull en­
g ine power.
To ensure eng ine cooling when the eng ine is
under an extreme load, the compressor is
switched off at high coolant temperatures .

Pollutant filter
The poll uta nt fi lter ( part icle fi lter) ensures
that imp urities in t he outside air (e .g. dust,
po llen) and odors are significantly reduced or
stopped . The air is also fi ltered in recircu lation
mode.
T he poll utant fi lter element m ust be changed
at the intervals specified in the service p lan so
that the perfo rmance of the a utomatic cli­
mate control system is not impaired.
If the effectiveness of the filter decreases pre ­
maturely due to operation of the vehicle in
areas with significant poll ution, the filter e le­
ment must be changed between the specified
serv ice dates.
Key recognition
T he c urrent automatic climate contro l set ­
tings are automatically stored and assigned to
the maste r key .
Energy management
To p reven t the bat tery from being discharged
and to res to re the ba lance o f energy, compo ­
nents which require large amo unts o f energy
are temporarily cut bac k or switched off
¢ page 211. Heating systems in particular re ­
quire a great deal of energy. If yo u notice, for
example, that the rear window heater is not
heating, then it has been temporarily reduced
o r switched off by
energy management.
T hese systems a re available again as soon as
the ene rgy balance has been res to red.

clear of i ce, snow, and con densa tion . Only

Rear window defogger~
Applies to vehicles: with deluxe automatic climate control
The rear window defogger clears the rear win­
dow of condensation .
.. Press the@il button to turn the rear window
defogger on and off.
The rear window defogger works only when
the eng ine is running. The indicator light in
the button illuminates when the rear window
defogger is on.
The rear window defogger is switched off au­
tomatically after 10 to 20 minutes, depend­
ing on the outside temperature.
The rear w indow defogger can be turned on
permanently by pressing the@il button for
more than two seconds. This rema ins stored
until the ignition is switched off. A rear w in­
dow defogger that was switched on also re­
mains stored for 15 minutes after the ignition
is switched off.
If the engine is restarted within these 15 mi­
nutes, the rear window defogger is act ivated
for 10 to 20 mi nutes, depend ing on outs ide
temperature . When a veh icle is parked for a
shor t time, the rear w indow defogger does
not need to be man ually ac tivated again.
@ For the sake of the environment
As soon as the rear window is clear, yo u
should switch the rea r window defogger
off. The reduced power consumption has a
beneficial effect on fuel consumption.
AC mode ~

Deacti vating

When the climate control system is working in
cooling mode, eng ine performance is reduced
and fuel consumpt ion is affected. To keep the

ed or cleared of condensation as quickly as
possible.

Temperature is controlled automatically . The
maximum amount of air flows main ly from
the vents below the windshield.

ing mode, a ir flows primarily from the
vents in the center console. To achieve ad­
equate cooling, you should never close
these vents completely.

Economical use of the climate control system
helps save fuel.
When the climate contro l system is working in
coo ling mode, engine performance is reduced
and fuel consumption is affected. To keep the
time the cl imate control system is on as short
as possible, you should do the follow ing:
.. To save fuel, turn off cooling mode by press­
ing the AC button (indicator light goes out) .
.. In add ition, if you open the window or the
panoramic sliding/tilt ing sunroof* while
dr iv ing, turn off cooling mode by pressing
the AC button (indicator light goes out) .
.. If the vehicle is extremely hot due to the
heat of the sun, briefly open doors and win ­
dows.

Automatic recirculation

An air quality sensor detects increased con­
centrations of pollutants in the outside air
and automatically switches to recirculation
mode.
We recommend that you always keep auto­
matic recirculation ON to prevent polluted
outside air from entering the vehicle interior.
If the
air quality sensor located in the climate
control system detects polluted outside air,
the sensor dec ides whether the air pollut io n
can be reduced by the factory-installed pollu­
tant filter or w hether it is necessary to switc h
to recirculation. With heavy concentr ations of
po llutants, the climate control system is
switched automatica lly to recirc ulation mode
and the supply of o utside air is blocked . As
soon as the concentration of pollutants in the
outside air drops, fresh air is supplied to the
vehicle interior aga in .
In the event that the windows fog up during
automatic recircu lation, press the~ button
immediately .
Under certain operating conditions, automatic
recirculation is switched off automatically.
When outside temperatures are below about
SO °F (+10 °C), automatic recirculat ion is lim­
ited to 30 seconds. When outside tempera­
tures are be low about 30 °F (-1 °C), automatic
recirculation is lim ited to 15 seconds .
Synchronization
Applies to veh icles : with Del uxe a uto mat ic climate con ­

One climate control setting for all seats.
After Syn chronization is set to On , all of the
subsequent climate control settings (except
for seat heating *) for the driver are transfer-
red to the front passenger. ..,.

- For reasons of safety, cruise contro l
sho uld not be used in the city, in sto p­
and-go traff ic, on twist ing roads and
w hen road conditions are poor (such as
ice, fog, gravel, heavy rain and hydro­
planing) -you cou ld have an acc ident .
- Switch the cruise contro l off temporarily
when d rivi ng in turn ing lanes, highway
exits or in construction zones .
- Please note that unconsciously "resting" yo ur foot on the accelerator pedal causes
c ruise contro l not to brake. This is due to
the control system be ing ove rridden by
the drive r's ac celeration.
{O) Tips
- Vehicles with manual t ransmission: You
can attain the set speed only if the gea r
that is currently engaged wi ll allow it, or
if i t does not tax t he engine and allows it
to run smoothly . There fore shift into a
higher or lower gear in a timely manner.
- The bra ke ligh ts illuminate as soo n as
the b rakes app ly automatica lly.
Changing speed
.. Press the lever in the direction of the 0
r::!v page 99, fig. 108 or in the direction of the
0 to increase or decrease your speed.
.,. Let go of the lever to save that speed.
Change speed in increments of 1 mph (1 km/ h) by light ly pressing the lever. If you keep the
lever pressed down, you will alter your speed
in 5 mph (10 km/h) increments .
You can a lso press the accelerator pedal down
to increase your speed, e.g. if yo u want to
pass someone. The speed you saved earl ier
will resume as soon as you let off of the accel ­
erator pedal.
If, however, you exceed your saved speed by
5 mp h (10 km/h) for longer than 5 minutes,
the cruise contro l will be turned offtempora -rily. The green symbo

white, the saved speed is retained .
Pre-selecting speed
You can pre-select your desired speed while
the vehicle is not moving .
