Auto Check Control
Introduction
The Au to-Check contro l mon itors th e funct ion
of cer ta in vehicle feat ures an d co mpo nen ts.
It
simp ly m ake s su re these fe atures an d compo ­
nents are working prope rly. The Auto -Check
control works as long a s the ig nition is o n, as
well as whenever the vehicle is drive n.
If a component is mal funct io ni ng o r if the
need f or an urge nt repa ir ha s been de te cted,
t hi s w ill ap pea r in the i nstr ument cluster d is­
play . You w ill also hear an a udible warning
tone. The displays are color coded in e ither
red or yellow depend ing on their leve l of p rior­
ity .
A red symbol means Danger , a yellow symbo l
indicates
Warn ing . In certain situat ions, in ­
format ion message for the driver appear in
addition to the red and ye llow symbols .
Function test: automat ic transmis sion*
The Auto- Check Contro l w ill automatically
perfo rm a test each t ime yo u sw itch on t he ig­
nition. With the selecto r leve r in
P or N , the
follow ing message appears in the d isplay:
When stationary apply foot brake while se­
lecting gear.
When yo u a selec t a differen t ge ar (for ex am ­
ple:
R , D , etc .), the message will disa ppear
and the A uto -Check f unctio n is displayed .
If there is a mal fun ct ion, then the ma lfu nc­
ti on me ssa ge will appear abou t 15 se co nds a f­
te r yo u st art the vehi cle. A t the same time you
will hear a warning tone.

Driver information messages
Driver information messages are shown in the
instrument cluster display in addition to sym­
bols.

For example, if the transmission selector lever
is not in the
P position when the engine is
turned
off, the following message appears:
Shift to P, otherwise vehicle can roll away.
Doors do not lock
if lever is not in P.
The ignition key can on ly be removed with the
selector in this position. This and other mes­
sages are brought up if a function cannot be
carried out.
Driver messages and red symbols
If a red symbol appears in the display, a dr iver
message is a lso displayed automatica lly.
For example, the. symbol for a problem
with engine oil pressure appears in the dis­
play . The message :
Switch off engine and check oil level
The driver message in the display goes out af­
ter about
5 seconds . The driver message can
be disp layed again by brief ly pressing the
ISETI button i=> fig. 25.
Driver messages and yellow symbols
If a ye llow symbo l appears in the disp lay, a
driver message is also displayed automatica l­
l y.
F or example,
thi- 1-1 symbol appears in the
disp lay, ind icating low windshield washer flu­
id level. The following message also appears:

If the . symbol in the instrument panel dis­
p lay flashes, the n there is a malfunc tion in the
a lt ernator or the vehicle electron ics. A warn­
ing to the driver will appear, too. The driver
warning goes out after about 5 seconds, but it
can be brought up at any time by pressing the
ISETI button again.
Usually, you can still drive to the next dea ler­
ship. T urn off all b ut the most necessary elec­
tr ica l cons umers, since these dra in the veh i­
cle's battery.

If the . war ning symbol (coolant system
malfunction) also lights up on the instru­
ment panel during the trip
c:> page 31,
then you have to stop immediately and
turn off the eng ine. The coolant pump is
not working anymore--danger of damage
to the eng ine!
BRAKE/ Brake system malfunction
A malfunction in the brake system must be
repaired as soon as possible .
If the warn ing /indicator light-(USA
models)/ . (Canada models) in the instru- me
nt cluster flashes, there is a brake system
malfunction. A driver message appears as
we ll to exp la in the ma lfunction in more de ­
ta il. The dr iver warning goes out after about S
seconds, but it can be brought up at any time by press ing the
ISE TI button again .

gether, the rear wheels could lock up
first under hard braking. Rear wheel lock­
up can cause loss of vehicle control and

dealer or a qualified workshop. Dr ive
slowly and avoid sudden, ha rd b rake ap­
plications.
- Canada models: If the brake warn ing
ligh t. and the ABS warning light

come on together, the rear wheels could
lock up first under hard brak ing. Rear
wheel lock- up can cause loss of veh icle
control and an accident. Have your vehi­
cle repaired immediately by your author­
ized Aud i dealer or a qualified workshop .

- The yellow oil level warning indication
II requires oil refill or workshop serv­
ice without delay . Do not wait until the
red oil pressure warning. starts to
flash before you respond to the low oil level warning
II. By then, your engine
may already have suffered serious dam­
age .

Yellow symbols indicate a priority 2 malfunc­

When a yellow warning symbol appears,
one
warning tone sounds. A driver message ap­
pears as well to explain the malfunction in
more deta il. The driver warning goes out after

Check the funct ion displayed as soon as possi­
ble. The yellow symbol will not go out again
until the reason for the malfunction has been

Xenon headlights
App lies to vehicles : wit h xe non head lig hts
After starting the eng ine, the xenon head­
li ghts are automatically adjusted to the load
and angle of the veh icle (for example, dur ing
acce lerat io n an d bra ki ng) . Th is prevents on­
com ing t raff ic fro m experiencing un necess ary
he ad light glare from y our xe non headli ghts.
If the system is not ope rat ing properly, a
warning symbol in the Auto-Ch eck Control is
displayed

Move the windshield wiper lever to the corre­
spond ing pos ition:
@ -Windshie ld w iper off
(D -Interva l mode. To extend/shorten the
wipe r intervals , move the switch @ to the
left/right. In veh icles with a rain sensor*, the
windshie ld wipers are act ivated automat ically
start ing at a speed of 2 mp h (4 km/h) . The
h igher the sensitivity of the rain sensor* is set
(switch @ to the right), the earlier the wind­
shie ld wipers react to mois ture on the wi nd­
shield.

® -Clean the wi ndshield . T o e liminate water
d ro pl ets , the w indshield wiper performs one
afterwipe operation after several seconds
while driving. You can switch this function off
by mov ing the lever to position ® within 10
seconds of the afterw ipe operation . The after­
wipe function is reactivated the next time the
ignit io n is switched on .
C lea ning the headlights *. The headlight wash­
er system* only functions when the light is
switched on . The headlights are automatically
cleaned the first t ime and every fifth time the
lever is moved to position ®· T hey are also
cleaned every time you hold the lever in posi­
tion ® for longer than 2 seconds. Clear vi

A WARNING
- The rain sensor is only intended to assist
the dr iver. The driver is st ill responsible
for manually switch ing the wipers on ac­
cording to the visibility cond it ions .
- The windsh ield may not be treated with
wate r-repell ing windsh ield coating
age nts. Unfavo rable cond it io ns, such as
we tness, dar kne ss, low sun, can result in
increased glare. Wiper blade chatter is
also possib le .
- Prope rly f unct ion ing windsh ield wiper
blades are req uired for a clea r view and
safe driving

-In the case of fros t, check whethe r the
w indshield wiper blades are frozen to
t he windsh ield. Sw itch ing on the wind ­
shield wipe rs can damage the wiper
blades!
- Prior to using a car wash, the windshield
wiper system must be switched off ( lever
in posit ion 0). Th is helps to prevent unin­
tentional switch ing on and damage to
the windsh ield wiper system.
(D Tips
- The windshield w ipers are switched off
when the ign it ion is turned off. Act ivate
the windsh ield wipers after the ignition
is switched bac k on by moving the wind­
shield w iper lever to any position .
- Worn or d irty windshield wipe r blades
result in streaking . This ca n affect the
rain sensor* funct ion . Check yo ur wind­
shield wiper blades regularly.
- T he ra in sensor* is part of the interval
w ip ing system. Turning off the ignition
w ill also deactivate the ra in se nsor* . To
reactiva te the sensor, swit ch off the in­
terval wiping function, then switch it
back on aga in .
- Th e washer f luid no zz les o f the w ind­
shield washer system are heated at low
temperatures when the ignition is on .
