34. Install transaxle case to clutch hous ing. If it is difficult to install,
slightly rotate control shaft shift lever counterclockwise, and then
install.
•1: Selector
• 2: Shift fork
CAUTION:
• Never disrupt liquid gasket bead with transaxle case or
other objects during installation.
• Be careful to align the lever of 5th-reverse fork rod with
reverse gear assembly groove.
35. Rotate input shaft so that bearing and shaft fit each other, and then tighten transaxle bolts ( ) to the specified torque. Refer to
MT-17, "
Exploded View".
36. Apply recommended sealant to the position switch thread and check ball plug thread. tighten them to tran- saxle case to specified torque.
•Use Genuine Silicon RTV or an equivalent. Refer to GI-42, "
Recommended Chemical Product and
Sealant".
CAUTION:
Never allow old liquid gasket, moisture, oil, or foreign matter to remain on thread.
37. Apply gear oil to mainshaft spline.
38. Install 5th main gear (1) to mainshaft using a suitable bolt (A) [M10 x 1.0] and a suitable nut (B).
39. Install adapter plate (1), bushing (2), and 5th input gear (3) to input shaft.
CAUTION:
Be careful with the orientation of adapter plate.

40. Install 5th-reverse synchronizer hub, 5th-reverse c oupling sleeve, and 5th-reverse shift fork according to
the following procedures.
a. Apply gear oil to 5th-reverse baulk ring.

• Be careful with the orient ation of 5th-reverse coupling
sleeve.
- : 5th input gear side
• Replace 5th-reverse synchronizer hub and 5th-reverse coupling sleeve as a set.
• Replace 5th-reverse shift fork and 5th-reverse fork rod as a set.
f. Check that the gear position is in the 3rd position. Press 5th-
reverse shift fork and shift to 5th gear.
g. Tighten bolt to the specified torque. Refer to MT-17, "
Exploded
View".
h. Tighten nut to the specified torque. Refer to MT-17, "
Exploded View".
CAUTION:
Never reuse nut.
i. Install retaining pin to 5th-reverse shift fork using a suitable tool. CAUTION:
Never reuse retaining pin.
41. Shift control shaft shift lever (1) to the neutral position.
42. Install O-ring to rear housing.
43. Install rear housing to transaxle case, and tighten bolts ( ) to the specified torque. Refer to MT-17, "
Exploded View".
CAUTION:
Never pinch O-ring when installing rear housing.
44. Install drain plug according to the following procedures.
a. Install gasket to drain plug. CAUTION:
Never reuse gasket.
b. Install drain plug to clutch housing using a suitable tool.
c. Tighten drain plug to the specified torque. Refer to MT-17,
"Exploded View".
45. Install filler plug according to the following procedures.
a. Install gasket to filler plug, and then install them to transaxle case. CAUTION:
Never reuse gasket.
b. Tighten filler plug to the specified torque. Refer to MT-17, "
Exploded View".
CAUTION:
Fill with gear oil before tightening filler plug to the specified torque.

CAUTION:
If transaxle assembly is removed from the vehicle , always replace CSC (Concentric Slave Cylinder).
Inserted CSC returns to the origin al position when removing transaxle assembly. Dust on clutch disc
sliding parts may damage CSC seal, and may cause clutch fluid leakage.
REMOVAL
1. Drain clutch fluid and remove clutch tube from CSC. Refer to CL-13, "Removal and Installation".
CAUTION:
Do not depress clutch pedal during removal procedure.
2. Remove engine and transaxle assembly. Refer to EM-197, "
Removal and Installation".
3. Remove starter motor. Refer to SC-20, "
Removal and Installation MR18DE".
4. Remove transaxle assembly to engine bolts.
5. Separate transaxle assembly from engine.
INSTALLATION
Installation is in the reverse order of removal.
• If transaxle is removed from the v ehicle, always replace CSC. Refer to CL-13, "
Removal and Installation" .

REMOVAL
1. Remove wheel and tire using power tool.
2. Remove wheel sensor from wheel hub and bearing assembly and rear suspension beam. Refer to BRC-
33 .
CAUTION:
Do not pull on wheel sensor harness.
3. Remove shock absorber mask from trunk side fini sher using a flat-bladed screwdriver. Refer to EI-56
.
CAUTION:
Wrap the tip of a screwdriver with cl oth to avoid damaging components.
4. Set jack under rear suspension beam.
5. Remove upper nut of the shock absorber, and then remove washer (upper), bushing (upper) from shock absorber.
6. Remove shock absorber lower side bolt.
7. Gradually lower the jack, and remove the bushing (lower), washer (lower), distance tube, bound bumper cover, bound
bumper and shock absorber from vehicle.
INSPECTION AFTER REMOVAL
Shock Absorber
Check the following:
• Shock absorber for deformation, cracks or damage, and replace if necessary.
• Piston rod for damage, uneven wear or distortion, and replace if necessary .
Bound Bumper and Bushing
Check bound bumper and bushing for cracks, deformation or other damage, and replace applicable parts if
necessary .
INSTALLATION
Installation is in the reverse order of removal.
• For tightening torque, refer to RSU-8, "
Component".
• Tighten wheel nuts to specification. Refer to WT-7, "
Adjustment".

1.CHECK TORQUE SENSOR POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT
1. Turn ignition switch OFF to ON. CAUTION:
Never start the engine.
2. Check voltage between EPS control unit harness connector terminals and ground. CAUTION:
Steering wheel is neutral position. (There is no steering force.)
Is the inspection result normal?
YES >> GO TO 2.
NO >> Perform the trouble diagnosis for battery power supply circuit. Refer to STC-9, "
Diagnosis Proce-
dure".
2.CHECK TORQUE SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT
1. Turn ignition switch OFF.
2. Check continuity between EPS control unit harness connector terminal and ground. CAUTION:
Steering wheel is neutral position. (There is no steering force.)
Is the inspection result normal?
YES >> GO TO 3.
NO >> Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.

1. Turn ignition switch OFF.
2. Disconnect EPS motor harness connector.
3. Check terminal for deformation, disconnection, looseness, and so on. If any malfunction is found, repair or replace terminal.
Is the inspection result normal?
YES >> Replace EPS control unit. Refer to PS-10, "Removal and Installation".
NO >> Repair or replace error-detected parts.

NO >> Check EPS control unit pin terminals for damage or loose connection with harness connector. If
any item are damaged, repair or replace error-detected parts.
