Engine immobilizer system
System maintenance
The vehicle has a maintenance-free type engine immobilizer system.
Conditions that may cause the system to malfunction
If the key is in contact with a metallic object
If the key is in close proximity to or touching a key to the security sys-
tem (key with a built-in transponder chip) of another vehicle
The vehicle's keys have built-in transponder chips that prevent the
engine from starting if the key has not been previously registered in
the vehicle's on-board computer.
Never leave the keys inside the vehicle when you leave the vehicle.
The indicator light flashes
after the “ENGINE START
STOP” switch has been
turned OFF to indicate that
the system is operating.
The indicator light stops

If the engine does not start
The engine immobilizer system may not have been deactivated. (P. 9 2 )
When the steering lock cannot be released
When the “ENGINE START STOP” switch indicator flashes in amber
The system may be malfunctioning. Have the vehicle inspected by any
authorized Lexus dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped
professional, immediately.
Auto power off function
If the vehicle is left in ACCESSORY mode for more than an hour with the
shift lever in P, the “ENGINE START STOP” switch will automatically turn
OFF.

The “ENGINE START STOP” switch
indicator will flash in green and a mes-
sage will be shown on the multi-informa-
tion display. Press the “ENGINE START
STOP” switch again while turning the
steering wheel left and right.

5-2. Steps to take in an emergency

If the engine will not start
If the engine will not start even though correct starting procedures are
being followed (P. 146), consider each of the following points.
The engine will not start even when the starter motor operates
normally.
One of the following may be the cause of the problem.
There may not be sufficient fuel in the vehicle’s tank.
Refuel the vehicle.
The engine may be flooded.
Try to restart the engine once more following correct start-
ing procedures. (P. 146)
The starter motor turns over slowly, the interior lights and
headlights are dim, or the horn does not sound or sounds at a
low volume.
One of the following may be the cause of the problem.
The battery may be discharged. (P. 462)
The battery terminal connections may be loose or corroded.
The starter motor does not turn over, the interior lights and
headlights do not turn on, or the horn does not sound.
One of the following may be the cause of the problem.
One or both of the battery terminals may be disconnected.
The battery may be discharged. (P. 462)
There may be a malfunction in the engine immobilizer sys-
tem. (P. 92)
There may be a malfunction in the steering lock system.
Contact any authorized Lexus dealer or repairer, or another
duly qualified and equipped professional, if the problem can-
not be repaired, or if repair procedures are unknown.
