CRUISE/ vJ' Cruise control

warn ing/ indicator light illum inates when the
cruise control is act ivated .
~/ !.!r Safety systems
The I (USA models)/ . (Canada mode ls) in ­
dicator light monitors the safety systems e.g.
airbags, pretensioners and illuminates for a
few seconds each time you switch the ignition
on .
If the
I (USA models)/ . (Canada models)
indicator light does not go out, or if it illumi­
nates while you are driving, or if it starts to
blink, then there is a malfunction somewhere
in the system . If the light does not illuminate
when you switch on the ignition, this also
means there is a ma lfunction.
_& WARNING
If you have a malfunction in the safety sys­
tems, contact your authorized Audi dealer
immediately. Otherwise the safety sys­
tems may not work properly in an acci­
dent.
0 Generator
This warning/indicator light detects a mal ­
function in the generator or in the vehicle's
electrical system.
The . warning/indicator light illuminates
when you switch on the ignition and must go
out after the engine has started .
If the . warning/ind icator light illuminates
while you are driving, you should contact your
authorized Audi dealer . Since the vehicle bat ­
tery is discharging, yo u should switch
off any
unnecessary electrical consumers (for exam­
p le, the air conditioner).
0 Note
If the . warn ing/indicator light (mal­
function in the engine cooling system) in
the instrument cluster should illum inate
¢ page 31, stop the veh icle and turn off
the engine. The coolant pump is not work­
in g -this can cause engine damage!
4 Safety belt warning light
Applies to vehicles: wit h safety belt wa rning lig ht
The warning light is a reminder to fasten
safety belts.
T he warn ing light . comes on for a few sec­
onds after the ignition is switched on as a re­
minder to fasten your safety belt.

BRAKE/ ((D ) Brake system
This warning/indicator light illuminates when
the brake fluid level is too low or when there
is a malfunction in the ABS, or when the park­
ing broke is set.
T he light 1111 (USA)/ . (Canada) ill umi­
nates when the igni tion is turned on.
It goes
out after the engine has been started and the
parking brake is fully released. This indicates
that the brake warning light is functioning
proper ly.
If the brake warning light does not light up
when the engine is cranking or the parking
brake is applied, there may be a malfunction
in the electrical system. In this case , contact
your Audi dealer.
If the ABS fails, the ABS warning/indicator

flashes together with the brake system warn­

- USA models:: If both, the -warning
light and the

on at the same time, the rear whee ls
could lock up first under hard braking.
Lock-up of the rear wheel brakes can
cause loss of vehicle control and an acci­
dent . Have your vehicle repaired immed i­
ately by your authorized Audi dealer or a qualified wo rkshop. Dr ive slowly and
avo id sudden, hard brake applicat ion.
- Canada models: If both, the brake warn­
ing light . and the ABS warning light
Ii] come on at the same time, the rear
wheels co uld lock up first unde r hard
braking . Lock-up of the rear wheel brakes
can cause loss of vehicle control and an
acc ident. Have your vehicle repaired im­
med iately by your authorized Audi dealer
or a qualified workshop. Drive slowly and
avo id sudden, hard brake applicat ion
- If the brake warning/indicator light does
not go out after a few seconds and the
park ing brake re leased, or lights up while
you a re d riving, the fluid level in the
brake fl uid reservo ir is too low. If you be­
lieve that it is safe to do so, p roceed im­
mediately at low speed to the nearest
authorized Audi dealer or qualified wo rk­
shop and have the brake system inspect­
ed.
- Please be very carefu l and always keep in
mind that after several brake applica­
t ions, you will need greater pressure on
the brake pedal to stop your vehicle. Consequently, you must allow for in­
cr eased braking distances. Trying to
brake as quickly as usual could lead to an
acci den t.
ABS/ (8 ) Anti-lock brake system
This warning/indicator light m (USA)/
Ii] (Canada) monitors the ABS and the elec­
tronic differential lock (EDL).
The m light w ill come o n for a few seconds
when the ignition is switched on. The light
will go out after an automatic check sequence
is comp leted.
There is a malfunction in the ABS when:
-The warning/indicator light does not illumi­
nate when you switch o n the ignition.
- The warning/indicator light does not go out
after a few seconds.
- The warning/indicator light illuminates
while driving.
The brake system will still respond e ven
without the a ssistance of the ABS system.
See your author ized Audi de aler as soon as
possible to restore full braking performance.

The AB S warning light and the b rake w arn­
ing light come on togethe r. The ABS will not
work and you will no tice a ch ange in braking
r e sponse and perform ance .
Malfunction in the brake sy stem

When a yellow symbol appears, a warning
tone will sound
once. Check the d isp layed

more than one
malfunction is detected, a ll symbols will ap­
pear one after the other for abou t two sec­
onds.
Driver information
In addition to th e warning/indicator lights
a nd the symbols in the inst rument cluster dis­
play, driver information is displayed.

As an examp le, the . symbo l appears in the
display. If yo u now p ress the button¢

the following driver message appears in the display:
Switch off engine and che ck oil level
The driver message in the display goes out af­
te r about 5 seconds. Yo u can display t he drive r
message aga in by briefly pres sing the button.
BRAKE /(©) Brake system
The indicator light flashes if the brake fluid
level is too low, if there is a malfunction in
t he ABS sys tem o r when the parking brake is
engaged.
If the - (USA models),1111 (Canada
model s) symbo l flashes in the d isplay w it h t he
par king brake rele ase d, there is a mal func tion
in the brake system. In ad dition to the sym­
bo l, one o f two messages appears in the dis ­
play :
STOP V ehicle and check brake fluid
ABS fault! See Owner's manual

Convenience closing
• Turn the key in the driver door once to posi ­

Opening or closing motion stops
immediately
as soon as you re lease the key. For safety rea­
sons, it is no t possible to activa te the conven­
ience feature with the remote control.

clear of al l moving parts. Risk of injur y!
Wind Deflector
The wind deflector reduces turbulence in the
passenger compartment and makes driving
more comfortable.

Extending wind deflector
• Pull the switch fo r wind deflector operation.
• Re lease the switch as soon as the wind de­
flector is completely extended.

• Keep the switch for the wind deflector de­
pressed until it is fully retracted.
T he w ind deflecto r is extended and retracted
electri cal ly.

- The wind def lector may not be used for
securing cargo .
- Always watch the wind deflector careful­
ly whi le it is closing. Fingers can be trap­
ped painfully in the mechanism!
(0 Tips
-Extension is interrupted immed iate ly the
switch is released.
- Th e wind deflecto r is most effect ive if all
the windows are raised.
Convertible top
emergency operation
, General information
Applies to vehicles: with power convertible top
The convertible top can be closed manually if
it malfunctions .
.,. Set the parking brake.
.,. Open the w indows .
.,. Remove the key from the ignition.
Close the convertible top manually only in an
emergency situation. The best way course of
action is to contact your dealersh ip to have
the cause of the malfunct ion corrected .
The convertible top's emergency operation ba­
sically consists of the following steps:
- Depressurize the hydraulic system for op­
erating the convertible top :
The hydraulic
system pump must be depressuri zed.
- Unlock the covers: The covers must be man­
ually unlocked and positioned.
-Raise the convertible top: The convertible
top must be manually lifted out of its well
and ra ised. .,.

To avoid unnecessary e ngine wea r and to
reduce exhaust emissions, do not let your
veh icle stand and warm up. Be ready to
drive off immediately after start ing your
veh icle . Maintain moderate speed until the
engine is comp letely warm . Remember,
the engine performs best at operating
temperature .
Stopping the engine
• Turn the ig nition key to position ©

&_ WARNING
- Never turn off the eng ine unti l th e vehi­
cle has come to a complete stop.
- The brake booster and servotronic on ly
work when the engine is running . With
the ignition turned off, yo u have to apply
more force when steering or braking.
S ince you cannot steer and stop norma l­
ly, this can lead to accidents and ser ious
injuries .
-The radiator fan can continue to run for up to 10 min utes eve n after yo u have
turned off the eng ine and rem oved the
ign iti on key. The r ad iator fa n can also
t u rn on again if th e e ngine coola nt hea ts
up because of inte nse sunlight or hea t
build -up in t he engine compartment.
(D Note
Do not stop the engi ne immed iate ly afte r
hard or extended driving . K eep the eng ine
r u nning for app rox imately two minu tes to
prevent e xcessive heat build-up .
Parking brake
Parking brake
When the parking brake is set , it prevents the
vehicle from rolling away unintentionally .

Setting the parking brake
• Pull the pa rking brake leve r all the way up.
Releasing the parking brake
• Pull the p arking brake lever up slight ly and
press the release button at the same time

• Keep the re lease button p ressed and lower
the par kin g brake <=>.&, .
If you should drive off with the parking brake
still set, a warning tone will sound and the
fol low ing will appear in the instrument clus­
te r to rem ind you to re lease the par kin g
brake:
Parking brake set
The parking brake war ning comes on only af­
ter you have dr iven for longer than 3 seconds
and faster than S mph (5 km/h) .
The parking brake warning light -
( U SA)/ . (CON) illuminates when the park­
ing brake is set and you switch on the igni tion .
&_ WARNING
Always re lease the park ing b rake com -
plete ly. A part ially engaged brake w ill
overheat the rea r brakes, reduce their ef­
fe ctive ne ss and cau se excessive wea r. This
could lead to brake f ailur e and an accident. .,..

(D Note
Only after the vehi cle has come to com­
plete stop, should you f irm ly set the park­
ing brake and either move the selector lev­
er into "P".
Parking
To prevent a parked vehicle from rolling
away, there are a few things you should do.
When you park your vehicle, do the following:
.,. Stop the vehicle using the brake pedal.
... Set the parking b ra ke firmly .
... Switch
off the engine.
... Move the selector lever into the P position

... Remove the ign it ion key from the ignit ion
lock.
What else you should do when pa rking
your vehicle on an incline or decline
Turn the steering wheel so that if the vehicle
should start to roll, it will roll into the curb.
If you are parking on a decl ine (the front of
your vehicle facing downhill), turn the front
wheels to the right so that they point
toward
the curb.
If you are parking on an incline (the font of
your vehicle facing uph ill), turn the front
wheels to the left so that they po int
away
from the curb.
A WARNING
Th is is how you can reduce the risk of in­
jury when leaving your veh icle.
- Never park the vehicle where it can come
in contact with d ry grass, sp illed fuel or
any othe r flammable mater ials .
- Never allow anyone -especially small
children -to remain in the vehicle whe n
it is locked . Locked doors ma ke it more
difficult for rescuers to access the pas­
senge r compartmen t in the event of an
eme rgency. Danger to life!
- Never leave c hildren unsupervised in the
vehicle. Children co uld re lease the par k-

ing brake or move the gearsh ift leve r out
of gear. The vehicle could start to ro ll
away and cause an acc ident.
- No matter what the season is, the tem­
perature in a parked ve hicle can reach
dangerous leve ls.
Acoustic parking
system
' Rear acoustic park assist
Applies to vehicles: with 4-channel acoust ic park assist
Acoustic park assist gives a warning about
obstacles behind the vehicle .
Description
The rea r acoustic pa rk ass ist (4-channel
a coustic park ass ist) de termines the dista nce
of the vehicle from an obstacle using ult ra ­
son ic sensors. The sensors are in the rear
bumper. The volume and the pitch of the
c hi mes can be adjusted throug h the men u dis­
play¢
page 21.

Backing up
Distance warning whe n backing up sta rts
whe n an obstacle is detected in the range of
t he pa rk ass ist system. As the distance de­
c reases, the t ime inte rva l between the audible
tones becomes shorte r.
When the distance is less than 1 foot (0.30
m), the tone becomes continuous. At this
po in t you sho uld s top bac king up .
Please note that low objects already signalled
by a war ning ca n disappear from the system's
de te ction range and will not continue to be
s ignalled . .,._
