Daytime running lights (DRL) (USA
models)
The daytime r unning lights can be turned on
or
off using this function. If the function is ac ­
tive, the daytime running lights are turned on
automatica lly when the ignition is switched
on.
The daytime running lights are activated
only
when the light switch is at the AUTO* or DRL *
position.
Daytime running lights (Canada models
only)
The daytime running lights are activated only
when the light switch ¢ fig. 57 is either at the
0 or the ,oo: position.
The daytime r unning lights function cannot be
turned
off .
Automatic headlight control*
In the switch position AUTO the automatic
headlight control
is turned on. The low
beams are turned on automatically through a
light sensor as soon as ambient brightness
(e .g. when driving into a tunnel) falls below a
value preset at the factory. When ambient
brightness increases aga in, the low beams are
turned
off again automatica lly c:> & .
In the AUTO position the low beams are
switc hed
off automatically when the ignition

off.
Light Sensor Malfunction*
In the event of a light sensor malfunction, the
driver is notified in the instrument cluster dis­

the engine compartment is topped

before going on a long trip . Look up

washer container.
- The w ipers only operate w ith the hood
completely closed.
Headlight washer system

The headlight washer system cleans the
headlights.
.. Operate the winds hield wiper/washer sys­
tem

li ghts turned on by holding the lever for lon­
ger than one second.
The washer jets extend forward o ut of the
front bumper driven by water pressure to
spray the front headlights with water.
You shou ld inspect the headlights regularly
(for example when refue ling) and clean
off
any solid dirt or insects from the lenses .
To ensure the system works properly in winter,
keep the washer jets free of snow and remove
any ice using a de-icing spray.
Service position
It is only possible to change wiper blades if
you move the wiper arms to the service posi ­
tion

A WARNING
The outlet plus any appliances plugged in­
to it remain functional even if the ignition
is switched off or the ignition key is re­
moved. Never leave children inside the ve­
hicle without supervision.

plugs that fit properly.

When the engine is off and accessories are still plugged in and are on, the vehicle bat­
tery can still be dra ined.
Storage
General
A WARNING
- Always remove objects from the instru­
ment panel. Any items not put away
cou ld slide around inside the vehicle
wh ile driving or when accelerating or
when applying the brakes or when driv­ ing around a corner.

- When you are driving make sure that
anything you may have placed in the cen­
ter console or other storage locations cannot fall out into the footwells . In case
of sudden braking you would not be able
to brake or accelerate.

We recommend the following sett ing :

Using the previously recommended setting is
the quickest way to achieve a comfortable cli ­
mate in the vehicle . Th is setting should there­
fore only be changed when persona l comfort
l eve ls o r certain circumstances requ ire it .
The climate controls are a combination of au ­
tomatic heating and ventilation systems and a
cooling system which dehum idifies and coo ls
the air inside the vehicle .
The climate controls automatically maintain a temperature once it has been set. The tem­pe rat ure of the air from the v ents, fan speed
(air vo lume) and ai r distribu tion are also auto­
mat ica lly adjusted . The system a lso takes into
account strong sunshine so that manua l ad ­
justment is not necessary . So in almost all
cases,
a utomatic mode offers the best cond i­
tions for the comfort of the occupants at all
times of the year

Plea se not e:
In cooling mode, relative humidity in the inte­
rior is reduced . This prevents the w indows
from fogg ing up .
When relative hum idity and temperatures
outside are high,
condensate can drip from
the a ir cond ition ing evaporator and form a
poo l of water under the veh icle. This is normal
and not an ind ication of a leak!
When outside temperatures are low, the fan
does not switch to a higher speed until the coolant has reached an adequate tempera ­
tu re , with the exception of the defrost set­
t ing.
When accelerating at wide-open throttle, the
air condit ioning compressor is temporar ily
switched off to maintain full engine power.
In order to ensure engine cooling under ex­
treme engine loads, the compressor is switch­
ed off if coolant temperatures cl imb too high .
Funct ions are set by turn ing the rotary knob
or switched o n and off by tapping the buttons.

The windshield and side windows ore defrost­
ed or cleared of condensation as quickly as
possible .
• To turn on the defogger/defroster, press the

Turning on automatic operation

Automatic opera tion ens ures constant tem­
perat ures in the inter ior and dehum idifies the
a ir i nside the vehicle . Air temperature, vol ­
ume, and distribution are controlled automat­
ica lly to reach or maintain the desired interio r
temperature as quickly as possib le. Fluct ua­
tions in exterior temperature and the effects
of temperature from the position of the sun
are compensated for automatica lly.
Manual air recirculation mode~
The recirculation mode prevents polluted out­
side air from entering the vehicle interior.

In recirc ulation mode, air is drawn from t he

When driving thro ugh a tunnel or in a traff ic
jam so that exhaust fumes and odors canno t
enter the vehicle interior.
A WARNING
You sho uld not use the recirculation mode
for an extended period s ince no fresh air is
drawn in, and with the air co ndit ioning
switched off the windows can fog up - this
i nc reases the r isk of an accident!
A/C operation ~
Switching on A /C

T he cooli ng sys tem is swi tched on d uring A/C
opera tion -the heat ing and ven tilat ion sys tem
is contro lled automatically.
@ Tips
If the L ED in the sw itch stays on a fter A/C
operation has been switched off( = sw itch ­
ing the A/C off), there is a fault in an air
conditioning component. P lease cons ult
an authorized Audi dealer when there is an
operating problem.
Using the climate controls economically
E conomical use of the climate controls helps
to save fuel.
When climate control is wo rking in cooling
mode, engine performance is reduced and
fuel consumpt ion is affected. To keep the time
the air cond ition ing is on as short as poss ible,
you should do the following: .,,_

~ If you would like to save fuel, switch the air
conditioning off.
~ If you open the windows wh ile driving,
switch the air conditioning off.
~ If the vehicle is extremely hot due to the
heat of the sun, briefly open doors and win­
dows.
@ For the sake of the environment
When you save fuel, you reduce em iss ions
from the vehicle.
Rear window defogger
The rear window defogger clears the rear win­
dow of condensation .
~ Press the QiP button c:> page 75, fig. 87 to
turn the rear window defogger on and off.
The rear window defogger works only when
the eng ine is running. The indicator light in
the button illuminates when the rear window
defogger is turned on .
The rear window defogger is switched off au­
tomatically after 10 to 20 minutes, depend­
ing on the outside temperature.
At very low outside temperatures, the rear
window defogger can be switched on continu­
ously by push ing the
QiP button for more than
2 seconds. This remains stored unt il the igni­
tion is sw itched off . A rear window defogger
that was switched on a lso remains stored for
15 minutes after the ignition is switched off.
If the engine is restarted within these 15 m i­
nutes, the rear window defogger is act ivated
for 10 to 20 minutes, depending on outside
temperature. With a vehicle that is parked for
a short t ime, the rear w indow defogger does
not need to be manually activated again.
@) For the sake of the environment
As soon as the rear window is clear, yo u
should switch the rea r window defogger
off . The reduced power consumption has a
beneficial effect on fuel consumption.

Heated seats
Applies to vehicles: with heated seats
The seat cushion and the seatback of the
front seats can be heated electrically.
~ Press the heated seats button I -.i + I
<=> page 75, fig. 87 to set the level of heating
desired.
The range of contro ls goes from 1 to 3. The
heat setting selected is shown by LEDs above
the button.

To avoid damage to the heating e lements
in the seats, do not kneel on the seats or
place heavy loads on a small area of the
seat.

Adjusting the steering wheel column
The steering wheel position can be continu­
ously adjusted in height and distance .

First, adjust the driver's seat correctly .
• Push the lever

• Move the steer ing wheel to the desired posi­
t ion.
• Push the lever against the steering column
until it locks.
There must be at least 10 inches (25 cm) be­
tween your chest and the center of the steer­
i ng wheel. If you cannot sit more than 10 in­
ches (25 cm) from the steering whee l, see if
adaptive equipment is available to help you reach the pedals and increase the distance
from the steering whee l.

A WARNING
Improper use of steeri ng wheel adjust­
ment and improper seating position can
cause serious personal injury.
- Adjust the steer ing whee l co lumn on ly
when the vehicle is not moving to pre­
vent loss of veh icle control.
- Adjust the driver's seat or steering wheel
so that there is a minimum of 10 inches
(25 cm) between your chest and the
steering wheel
¢ page 99 , fig. 107. If
yo u cannot maintain this min imum dis- tance, the airbag system cannot protect
you proper ly.
- If physical limitations prevent you from
sitting 10 inches (25 cm) or more from
the steering wheel, check with your au­
thorized Audi dealer to see if adaptive equ ipment is ava ilable .
- If the steer ing wheel is aligned with your
face, the supplementa l driver's a irbag
cannot provide as much protection in an
accident . Always make sure that the
steer ing wheel is aligned with your
chest.
- Always hold the steering wheel w ith your
hands at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock posi­
tions to reduce the risk of persona l injury
if the driver's airbag dep loys .
- Never hold the stee ring wheel at the 12
o'clock position or with your hands inside
the steeri ng wheel rim or on the steering
wheel hub . Holding the steering wheel
the wrong way can cause serious injuries
to the hands, arms and head if the driv­
er's airbag deploys.

You should always lock the steering whenever
you leave your vehicle . This makes a vehicle
theft even more difficu lt ¢ & .
Ignition ke y safe ty lock
After switching off the ignition, the ig nit ion
key can only be removed from the ign ition
l ock when the selector lever is in the "P"
(Park) position . After you have removed the
key, the selector lever is locked and cannot be
moved.
Ignition on @
If it is difficult to turn the key after you have
inse rted it into the ignition lock, turn the
steering whee l back and forth. This will take
the load
off the steering lock mechan ism and
you will be able to turn the key freely and start the engine.
Starting the engin e@
In this position the engine starts . While the
engine is starting, the power supply to the headlights and other e lectr ica l consumers is
tempo rarily interrupted to conserve battery
power . After the engine has started, release
the key and it will return to posit io n @ .
Before the starter can be operated again the
key must be turned back to position@. The
non-r epeat lock prevents you from damag ing
the sta rter when the engine is runn ing .
A WARNING
-Never remove the key from the ign ition
lock whi le the vehicle is moving. The
steering wheel will lock causing loss of
control.
- If you have to leave your ve hicle -even
f or just a m in ute -always remove the ig­
ni tion key and take it with you. This is es­
pecially important if yo u a re going to
leave chi ldren behind in the vehicle. The
children cou ld start the engine or use
other vehicle controls. Unsupervised use
of vehicle controls (for example, power
windows) can cause serious personal in­
jur ies .

If the vehicle battery has been disconnect­
ed and then reconnected, then yo u must
l eave the key in posit ion @ for about 5
seconds before you can start the engine.

.,. Let go of the key as soon as the engine
starts.
A cold engine may at first be loud after it has
been started. This is due to the hydraulic
valves bu ild ing up the oil pressure. Th is nor­
mal and no need for concern .
If the engine does not start immediately, stop
trying after 10 seconds and then try to restart
the engine about 30 seconds later.
A WARNING
-Never start or let the eng ine run in a con-
fined o r enclosed area . Exhaust fumes
from the engine contain carbon monoxide,
a colorless and odo rless gas. Ca rbon mon ­
oxide can be f atal if inhaled.
- Never leave the engine id ling unattend­
ed. An una ttended veh icle with a runn ing
engine poses a danger o f personal injury
or theft .
(D Note
-Avo id high engine speeds, fast accelera­
tion or heavy engine loads while the en­
gine is still cold. This could damage the
engine.
- The engine cannot be started by pushing
or towing the vehicle . .,..
