Engine compartment
Be especially careful when cleaning the engine compa rt
men t.
Always switch off the ignition before cleaning the engine=:>& .
Plenum panel
Remove leaves from the plenum panel in front of the win dshi eld
unde r th e eng ine hood . T hi s prevents the water d rain holes from
becoming b locked, and it prevents debris from entering the vehicle
inter io r th rough the heat ing and vent ilation ducts .
Corrosion protection
The eng ine compartment and transmission have been cor rosion
protected at the factory.
Good ant i-cor rosion treatment is very impo rtant , pa rtic ular ly in the
w inter . If the vehicle is frequently driven on sa lt treated roads, the
en tire eng ine compar tment and plenum p anel sho uld be thoroug hly
cleaned at the end of winter and retreated to prevent salt damage. At
t he same t ime, the underside of the vehi cle should be washed as well.
If the e ng ine compartment is clea ned at any t ime with grease
removing so lutions
2l , or i f you have the engine washed , the anti
co rros io n treatment is a lmost a lways removed as w ell.
It is t herefore
essential to have a long-last ing corrosion p rotect ion reapplied to all
surfa ces, seams, jo ints and compo nents in the engi ne co mpa rt ment .

Gasoline
Using the right fuel helps keep the environment clean and
prevents engine damage.
Fuel recommendation
The fuel recommended for you r vehicle is unleaded premium grade
gasoline . See also~
page 365, "Data". Audi recommends using TOP
TIE R Detergent Gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 91 AKI (95
RON) . For more information on TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline, please
go to the official website (www.toptiergas .com).
Th e recommended gasoline octane rating for your engine can also be
found on a labe l located on the inside of the fue l filler flap. This rating
may be specified as AK I o r RON.
Your vehicle may also be operated using unleaded regular gasoline
with a minim um octane rating of 87 AKl/91 RON . However, using 87
AKl/91 RON octane fuel will slightly reduce engine performance .
Use unleaded gasoline only. Unleaded gasoline is available
throughout the USA, Canada, and in most European countries. We
recommend that you do not take your vehicle to areas or countries
where unleaded gasoline may not be availab le.
For more information on refueling your vehicle, see~
page 293.
Octane rating
Octane rating indicates a gasoline's ability to resist engine damag ing
" kno ck" caused by prematu re ignition and detonation. Therefore,
buying the correct grade of gasoline is very important to help prevent
possible engine damage and a loss of engine performance.
Safety first
Gaso line most commonly used in the United States and Canada has
the following octane ratings that can usually be found on the filler
pump:
• Premium Grade: 91 - 96 AKI
• Regular Grade: 87 - 90 AKI
E xplanation of the abb reviations :
AKI= Anti Knock Index= (R +M)/2 = (RON+MON)/2
RON= Research Octane Number
MON= Moto r Octane Number.
0 Note
• Do not use any fuel with octane ratings lower than 87 AKI or 91
RON otherwise expens ive engine damage will occur.
• Do
not use leaded gasoline . T he use of leaded gasoline w ill
seve rely damage your veh icle's cata lytic converter and its ability to
control exhaust emiss io ns. •

Blended gasoline
Use of gasoline containing alcohol or MTBE (methyl
tert iary butyl ether)
You may use unleaded gasoline blended w ith alcohol or MTBE
(common ly referred to as oxygenates) if the blended mixture meets
the following criteria:
Blend of gasoline methanol (wood alcohol or methyl alcohol)
• Anti-knock index must be 87 AKI o r higher.
• Blend must contain no more than 3% methanol.
• Blend must contain more than 2% co-solvents .

Blend of g asoline and ethanol (grain alcohol or ethyl alcohol )
• Anti-knock index must be 8 7 AKI o r higher .
• Blend must not conta in more than 10% ethanol.
Blend of gasoline and M TBE
• Anti-knoc k index must be 87 AKI o r highe r.
• Blend must conta in not more than 15% MTB E.
Sea sonally adjusted ga soline
Many gasoline grades are b lended to perform especially well for
w inte r or summer d riving. Duri ng seasonal change-ove r, we s uggest
that you fill up at busy gas stat ions where the seasonal adjus tment is
mor e likely to be made in time.
0 Note
• Methano l fuels which do not meet these requirements may cause
co rrosion and damage to plast ic and rubber component s in the fue l
system .
• Do not use fuels that fail to meet the specified c riteria in this
chapter.
• If you are unable to dete rm ine whether or not a part icu lar fuel
blend meets the specifications, ask your service stat ion or its fuel
supplier .
• Do not use f uel fo r which t he con tents cannot be iden tifie d.

Service stations offering Diesel f uel are generally loca ted on truck
routes or major hig hways. Directo ries of Diese l fue l stations are
usually availab le at Diese l fuel stations.
Some states in t he USA require permits to purchase Diesel fuel. Check
w ith your State Mo tor Vehicle De partment.
Diesel fuel may not be available outs ide the USA and Canada. Be sure
to check before trave ling to othe r countries .
Winter operation
At t empe ratures below 20° F (- 7° C), Die sel fue l No . 2 l oses its flu idity
due to wax separation, wh ich may clog the fuel filter or tank fi lter and
keep the engine from running .
T o help t he filte r from be ing clogged by wax, the fue l fi lter in your
vehicle is automatically preheated. Preheat ing the fuel f ilter makes
operat io n of yo ur vehicle possib le with Die sel fuel No. 2 dow n to -
10° F (-24° C).
If you expect temperat ures below 5° F (-1S° C) ask yo ur fuel dealer
whether their Diesel fuel No . 2 is suffic iently w interized for the
prevailing and expected temperat ures.
If not winterized or insuff ic ie ntly w inte riz ed Diese l fuel has already
thickened to the extent that the engine w ill not start, warm the
vehicle up by leaving i t in a heated garage.
It is normal that the eng ine noise level (dieseling) is louder during the
warm-up period in winte r. It is also normal when whitish -blue smoke
comes out of t he tailpipe afte r start ing and du ring warm-up. The
amount of smoke depends on the outside temperature .
Do not let your Diesel engine idle unnecessa rily af ter a co ld start.
Dr iv ing off slow ly w ill shorten the warm-up per iod.
