Driver information display
Efficiency program*
The efficiency program can he lp you to use less fuel=> page 27. •
Operation
The trip computer is controlled by two switches on the
windshield wiper lever .

-To display the trip computer memory levels, press the
[ RESET) button @=> fig. 17 repeatedly until the desired
memory level is shown in the display.
- To display trip information within a memory level, press
the top or bottom part of the function se lection switch @.
The trip computer will not operate unless the ignition is on. When you
turn on the ignition, the function that was in use when yo u last turned
the ignition off will be d isplayed.
In addition to information on the trip computer (trip computer 1 and
2 and the efficiency program*), the dig ital speedometer and informa­
tion regarding the navigation system* can also be displayed. To
switch the d isp lay between the different informat ion, tap the
[RESET I button @ briefly.
Setting values to zero
To delete one current value from the trip computer, select the
desired function and press the
I RESET I button @ for at least one
second. The following values can be set to zero
individually :
• Average fuel mileage
• Average speed
• Elapsed time
• Distance
All curre ntly displayed values are deleted in the effic iency program*.
In addition,
all the values in the single-trip or the total-trip memory
can be deleted simultaneous ly =>
page 26 .

All stored values will be lost if the vehi cle battery is disconnected. •
Basic Settings for the trip computer
The radio or MM!* operating unit is used for setting the
trip computer's basic settings.
-Select: Function button [CARI> Instrument cluster > On-
board computer 1
or On-board computer 2.
Th e values in the single -trip or the total-trip memory can all be reset
to zero at the same time under
Reset in the menu.
In addition, you can determine what information from the trip
computer should be shown in the instrument cluster display.
If one
of the p ieces of driver information is turned
Off , that driver informa­
tion will not be shown in the display. The information w ill continue to
be calculated by the trip computer and can be turned back
On at any
t ime. ._

- Press the [S ETI button in the instrument panel display
~ page 30, fig. 23 for 1 second.
Resetting the maximum speed
- Drive the veh icle at a speed of at least 3 mph (5 km/ h)
- Press the
[S ET ] button for more than 2 seconds .
The speed warning symbo l E, (USA models)/8 (Canada models) will
appear b riefly in the display when yo u release the
I SETI button to
indicate that the maximum speed has been stored s uccessfully.
T he maxim um speed rema ins sto red until it is changed by p ressing
the
[ SET I button again briefly or until it is de leted by a lengthy push
on the button. •
Speed warning 2: setting a speed limit
The radio or MM I* contro l unit is us ed to set, change or
delete warning threshold 2.
- Select: Funct ion button [CAR I> Instrument cluster >
Speed warning .
Warning thresho ld 2 can be set in the speed range starting from 20
mph to lS0 mph (30 km/h to 240 km/h) . Settings can each be
adjusted in interva ls of 6 mph (10 km/h). •
Auto Check Control
Introduction
The Auto-Check control monitors the function of certain vehicle
features and components . It simp ly makes su re these features and
components are work ing properly. The Auto-Check control works as
long as the ignition is on, as we ll as whenever the vehicle is driven.

If a component is malfunctioning or if the need for an urgent repair
has bee n de tected, t his will appea r in t he inst rument clus ter display.
You will also hear an audible warn ing tone. The d isp lays are color
co ded in either red or yellow depending on their level of priority.
A red symbol means Danger, a yellow symbo l ind icates Warning . In
certain situations, information message for the driver appear in addi­
ti on to t he red and ye llow symbo ls .
Function test: automatic transmission*
T he Auto-Check Contro l w ill a utomat ically perfo rm a test each time
you switch on the ignit ion. W ith the selector lever in
P or N , the
following message appears in t he d isp lay:
When stationary apply foot brak e while selecting gear .
When you a select a different gear (for example:
R , D , etc.), the
message w ill disappea r and the Auto-Check function is d isplayed .
If there is a ma lfunction, then the malfunct ion message will appear
abou t 15 seconds a fter you st art the vehicle. At the s ame time you
will hear a warning tone. •

ment cluster display in addition to symb ols.

Locking vehicle
-Move the selector lever to the P position (automatic trans­
mission*), otherwise the vehicle cannot be locked.

The vehicle can be locked and unlocked at any door. It depends on the
settings in the radio or MMI* whether the entire vehicle is unlocked
or one of the doors~
page 47. The master key must be within a
range of about 1.5 m from the appropriate door or the rear lid. It
makes no d ifference whether the master key is in your jacket pocket
or in your brief case.
If you grip the door handle while locking, th is can adversely affect the
locking function.
It is not possible to re-open the door for a brief period directly after
closing it. This allows you to ensure that the doors are properly
locked.

If your vehicle has been standing for an extended period, please note
the following :
• The proximity sensors are deactivated after a few days to save
powe r. You then have to pull on the door handle once to unlock the
vehicle and a second time to open the vehicle .
• To prevent the battery from being discharged and to preserve your
vehicle's ability to start for as long as possible, the energy manage­
ment system gradually switches off unnecessary convenience func-

Operating locks with the mechanical key
In the event of a failure of the power locking system, the
driver's door con locked and unlocked with the mechan­
ical key at the lock cylinder.
To unlock the vehicle

- Insert the mechanical key in to the lock of the driver's
door.

To lock the vehicle
- Move the selector lever to the P position (automatic trans­
mission*).
- Close all windows and doors properly.

How is the distance (time interval) set?

Select distance
The distance at which the adaptive cru ise control follows a vehicle in
front is determined by
time intervals . A time interval to a vehicle in
front is estab lished and maintained. This produces a speed-depen­
dent interval. The higher the speed, the greater the safety interval in
yards (meters) ~

Th e distances provided are specified values. These distances may
exceed or fall short of these target distances, depending on the
driving situation and the driving style of the vehicle ahead.
Distance 1 ~-~ ---
Thi s sett ing is ideal for brisk driving i n bumper-to-bumper traffic. The
distance is one second. This is the equivalent of, for instance,
• a distance of 36 feet (11 meters) at a speed of 25 mph (40 km/h)

a distance of 72 feet (22 meters) at a speed of 50 mph (80 km/h)
• a dist ance of 108 feet (33 meters) at a speed of 75 mph (120
km/h)
Distance 2 ,;::::,-- ~--
This setting is ideal for "keeping pace" comfortably in bumper-to­
bumper traffic. The distance is 1.3 seconds. This is the equ ivalent of,
for instance,
• a distance of 46 feet (14 meters) at a speed of 25 mph (40 km/h)
• a dista nce of 95 feet (29 meters) at a speed of 50 mph (80 km/h)
• a distance of 144 feet (44 meters) at a speed of 75 mph ( 120
km/h)
Distance 3 ~--- ~-
This setting is idea l for "keeping pace" in bumper-to-bumper traffic
and is the equivalent of the generally recommended distance that is
"half of the speedometer speed" . The distance is 1 .8 seconds. This is
th e equivalent of, fo r instance,
• a distance of 66 feet (20 meters) at a speed of 25 mph (40 km/h)
• a distance of 131 feet (40 meters) at a speed of 50 mph (80 km/h)
• a distance of 197 feet (60 meters) at a speed of 75 mph (120
km/h)
Distance 4 ~---- ~
This sett ing is ideal for secondary road traffic. The distance is 2.3
seconds. This is the equivalent of, for instance,
• a distance of 82 feet (25 meters) at a speed of 25 mph (40 km/h)
• a distance of 167 feet (51 meters) at a speed of 50 mph (80 km/h)
• a distance of 249 feet (76 meters) at a speed of 75 mph (120
km/h)
You can set the way your vehicle performs in ACC mode when acce ler­
ating and braking in the radio or MM !* ~
page 133. Depending on
the driving program and distance you select , you r veh icle's accelera-
tion and braking can range from dynam ic (1) to comfortable (5) . _,.

If the distance to an obstacle remains t he same, the vo lume of the
dis tan ce warn ing is gradu ally redu ced af ter abou t 4 seco nds.
Approaching another obstacle will result in the distance warning
s ou nding a t th e normal vo lume aga in.
Malfunctions in the system
If a wa rning tone is aud ible fo r about five seconds when you turn o n
the ignition , there is a ma lfunction in the system. Have the prob lem
c o rrected by yo ur auth orized Aud i de aler.
Keep the sensors in the rear bumper clean and free from ice so t hat
t he acous tic par k ass ist system can func tion prope rly.
& WARNING
• Sens ors have dead space s in whi ch objects cannot be dete cted.
Be especi ally alert for small children and animals , since they are
not alway s detected by the sen sors.
• The acou stic parking system is not a substitute for the dr iver 's
own caution and alertne ss. Ultimate respon sibility alway s
remains w ith the driver during parking and similar maneuvers.

• You should always adjust the volume and frequency of the
warning tone s so that you can e asily hear the acoustic di stan ce
wa rning e ven if the radio is pl aying, the air -conditioner blowe r is
on High or there i s a high level of out side noi se .
- Check the setting s whenever anyone else has driven the
vehicle before you.

Adjusting the warning tones
The warning tones can be adjusted in the MMI*.
-Select : [CAR]> Parking sy stem .

• In-car entertainment fad er-when the park ing system is switched
on , the vol ume of the active audio source is lowered .
Th e newly adj usted value is br iefly heard from the signa l gene rator.
The settings are automatically stored and ass igned to the master key
with remote control. •
