Under certain circumstances, weekly washing may be necessary .
Under other conditions, a monthly washing and waxing may be
adequate.
After the winter, the underside of the vehicle shou ld be thoroughly
washed preferably in a professional car wash.

Automatic car wash
The vehicle can be washed in almost any modern auto­
matic car wash.
Th e vehicle paint is so durable that the vehicle can normally be
washed without problems in an automatic car wash . However, the
effect on the paint depends to a lar ge exten t on the design of the
facility, the filtering of the wash water, the type of wash and care material, etc. If the paint has a dull appearance after going through
the car wash or is scratched, bring this to the attention of the oper­
ator immediately . If necessary, use a different car wash.
The power top does not require special precautions before passing
through a car wash .
However, the car must not be treated with hot
wax after the wash cycle!
The wax could adverse ly affect the power
top and even damage the fabr ic over a period of time .
The power top does not have to be washed every time you use a car
wash. The power top can be spared if the car wash facility is equ ipped
with manually adjustable roof brushes or rollers.
Before going thro ugh a car wash, be sure to take the usual precau­
tions such as closing the windows . Remove antenna if applicable.
If you have installed additional accessories on the vehicle -such as
spoilers, etc. -it is best to ask the car wash operator if these should
be removed.

Washing the vehicle by hand
A lot of water is needed when washing a vehicle by hand.
-Before you start washing, make sure you have read and
understood the WARNINGS~
& in "General informa­
tion" on
page 260.
- First soak all dried dirt until it is soft, then rinse it off .
- As you clean your vehicle, start with the roof and work your
way down to the bottom, using a sponge, a sponge glove
or a clean brush.
- Rinse the sponge or the sponge glove often, flushing it clean each time.
- Use special car shampoo only for very persistent dirt.
- Rinse the car thoroughly with water.
- Use a chamois leather to gently wipe the exterior dry .
Use a separate sponge for cleaning the whee ls, door sills and other
reg ions exposed to road dirt. In this way, you will not scratch the
paint with coarse particles imbedded in the sponge the next time you
wash the ca r.

• Do not clean the underside of the chassis, fenders, wheel
covers, or other hard to reach parts without protecting your hands
and arms . You may cut yourself on sharp-edged metal parts. .,

wet cloths or sponges to prevent scratches. It is best to use soapy
wate r.

Washing your vehicle with a power washer

po wer washer is safe as long as y ou obser ve a fe w sim ple

- Make sure t hat the jet o n the spray hose produces a "fa n
shaped sp ray".

When cleaning the vehicle with a powe r washe r
always follow the

Never wash tires with a jet that sprays water in a direct stream.
This could cause invisible damage to the tires and weaken them ,
even if the spray is from a relatively long distance and for a short
time . Damaged and weakened tires can fail and cause accident s

• Never use a power washer to clean the power top itself.
• To avoid damaging your vehicle, always make sure that there is
suff icient distance between the spray head and soft mater ials l ike
rubber hoses, plastic parts and sound -deadening materials. Never
aim the spray head at the same po int for a long time. This also applies
to cleaning headlights and painted bumpers. Remember: the closer
the nozzle is to the surface of the mater ial, the greater the stress on
the material. •
Power top care
The power top requires special care.
Keeping your top looking great and mak ing certain that it lasts a long
time depend to a great extent on proper use and care. Remove bird
droppings as soon as possible, since the corrosive chemicals in them
wi ll cause the rubber impregnation in your top to swell and possibly
allow the fabric to leak.
With
normal soiling, all you need to do is clear the top with a soft
brush and clear water. Always brush in the direction of the fabric from
front to rear.
If the top is
very dirty and has spotted areas clean it with a br ush
using a convert ible top cleaner . Always brush in the direction of the
fabric from front to rear. Rinse with plenty of clear water, and allow
the top to air -dry .
Chamois are not sui tab le for drying the top .
Never use gasoline, spot remover, benzene, paint thinner or solvents
to remove spots. We recommend that you only use cleaners espe­
cially formulated for use on convertib le tops, and that you follow the
produce use directions carefully . Authorized Audi deals can provide
detailed information.

Wind deflector
Clear the wind deflector with wate r or, if it is heavily soiled, a chemi ­
ca lly neutra l cleaning solution.

Waxing
Wax protects the vehicle's paint.
-Use a man ually applied car wax occasionally to protect the
paint .
A good wax coating protects the veh icle paint to a large extent
agains t the environmental factors listed under =>
page 260,
"Washing " and even against slight scratches.
You can use a liquid car wax to protect your paint as soon as one week after your vehicle has been delivered.
Even if you regularly use a
waxing process in automatic car washes,
we recommend that you manually apply a coat of wax to give the .,_

paint extra protection, particularly if water no longer beads on the
clean pain t.
Protect plast ic body parts with ca r wax in the same way as the vehicle
body.
Dur ing warm weather de ad insec ts tend t o colle ct on t he fron t
bumper and on the forward a rea of the hood. T hey are much easier to
remove from pa in t th at is waxed often.

Polishing
Polishing restores the gl oss to the paint.
Polish your veh icle only if the paint has los t its sh ine and the g loss
cannot be b rought back with wax.

Trim strips
Metal trim needs special care .
For environmental reasons, Aud i fabricates the br ight tr im strips and
t rim pieces from pure chr om ium-free alum inum.
Dirt and marks on the trim strips s ho ul d be
removed with a pH­
balanced cleanin g agen t (d o no t use a chrome cleaner). Au thori ze d
Audi dealers car ry clea ning p roducts which have been tested for use
on your vehicle and are not harmful to the environment .
T o avo id corrosion on the exte rio r tr im st rips, only a pH-b alance d
so lution should be used for the windshield washer.

Plastic and vinyl
Plas tic needs special care.
Use a clean, damp clo th o r spo nge to remove d ust and l ight surface
dirt. For other so il, use a lukewarm all-purpose cleaning so lution or a
m ild sadd le soap fo r vinyl tr im. Remove water spots and traces of
soap with a clean, damp cloth or sponge. Use a clean, soft cloth to rub
dry.
Grease, ta r o r o il stains can be
removed with a clean cloth or sponge
soaked with all- pu rpose cleaner o r with a solven t desig ned espec ia lly
to clean vinyl. .,.

Occasionally apply a colorless vinyl or leather preservative to retain
the material's lust er and pliability.

Aluminum trim
Use only neutral-pH products to remove spots and deposits from
aluminum surfaces. Chrome care products and alkaline cleaners w ill
attack aluminum surfaces and can damage them over time.

Touch-up paint
Minor paint damages should be touched up immediately.
- Use either a touch-up paint stick or spray paint to cover
minor scratches and nicks.
Your authorized Audi dea ler has touch-up paint for minor scratches
and stone chips. Scratches should be touched up soon after they
occur to prevent corrosion.
If a spot starts to rust, however, a simple touch-up job will not be
enough. The affected surface must be sanded smooth and coated
with an anti-rust primer before the painted finish can be restored.

page 340.

Windows
Clear vision to all sides .
Clean all windows regularly to remove road film and car wash
wax buildup.
- Remove snow from windows using a brush.
- Use a plastic ice scraper to remove ice from windows and
mirrors .
- Remove other residue on the windows with a spray-on
glass cleaner.
- Wipe the windows dry with a clean piece of cloth or
kitchen paper towel.
The best way to remove snow from windows and mirrors is to use a
brush. Use a non -abrasive
plastic ice scraper -better sti ll, a spray
deicer - to remove
ice from windows and mirrors.
The windows must not be cleaned with insect remover or wax since
t hese can interfere with the function of the windshield wiper blades
(chatter) .
Oil , grease, or silicone residue can be removed with
glass cleaner or
silicone remover . However, wax residue requires the use of a specially
formulated solvent. Please contact your authorized Audi dealer for
advice on safe products for wax removal.
Windows should also be cleaned on the inside at regular intervals. ..,.

Never dry windows with the same chamois that you use to dry painted

• The windshield must not be treated with water-repellent
materials. They can increa se glare under poor vi sibility condition s
such as wetness, darkness, o r when the sun is low on the horizon.
In addition, they can cause the wind shield wipers to chatter .

• Water leaking from the ins ide of the rear windows may damage

shelf or in the rear trunk area. Always ens ure that water never leaks
t hrough the body section o f th e veh icle. Yo u can do th is by usin g
waterproof protection over the vehicle 's electrical components (e.g.,

Weatherstrips

rear lid, etc. must remain pliable . Spray the weatherstr ips w ith sili­
c one or coa t them wi th ta lcum powder o r gly cerin to reta in the flex i­
bility of the rubber and to protect them against freezing in the
w inte r.

Keep silicone sprays off the w indshield to avo id wiper smear in rain. •
Cast (light} alloy wheels
Cast (light) alloy wheels require special care .
- Wash the whe els with a sp ong e or h ose b rush every o th er
w ee k.
- For deep cleaning afterwa rds, use only a ded icate d
acid­
free cast alloy wheel c leaner.
- Rub a coat of
liquid wax onto t he rims every three mo nth .
Be sure to reach and treat all parts o f the rim.
To preserve the decorative appearance of the cast alloy wheels, some
special care is necessary. In addi tion t o ro ad dirt and sal t, br ake dust

Body cavity sealing
The bod y cavi ty sealing does not ne ed to be checked.

If any wax shou ld see p ou t of the cavity w hen the ambi ent te mper a­
tu re is high, it can be removed with a plastic scraper and a suitable
s o lve nt.

removing the wax, keep sparks, flame and lighted cigarettes

Care of interior

MMI display
-Clean the MMI display with a soft clean cloth and an LCD
cleaner .
The MMI display can be cleaned with a professionally available "LCD
cleaner" . The cloth should be slightly dampened w ith the cleaning
fluid to clean the display.

MMI control console
-First clean the MMI control console with a brush to
remove dust from the housing.
- Then wipe the MMI control console with a clean, soft,
slightly damp cloth.
T he MM I control console should be cleaned with a brush first so that
no dirt is trapped between the buttons and the housing. We recom­
mend g iv ing the MM I control console a final wipe with a cloth moist­
ened with water and dish washing detergent .

To prevent damage, make su re that no fluid ever gets into the MMI
control console. •
Aluminum trim

Fabrics and fabric coverings
Fabrics and fabric coverings (e .g . seats, door tr im panels, etc.) should
be cleaned at regular intervals with a vacuum cleaner . This removes
surface dirt particles which could become embedded in the fabric
through use. Steam cleaners should not be used, because the steam
tends to push the d irt deeper in to the fabric and lock it there.
Normal cleaning
Generally, we recommend using a soft sponge or a lint-free
microfiber cloth to the clean fabric. Brushes should on ly be used for
carpets and floor mats, since other fabric surfaces could be harmed
by brushes.
Normal surface stains can be cleaned using a commercially available
foam cleaner. Spread the foam on the surface of the fabric with a soft
sponge and work it in gently. Do not saturate the fabric. Then pat the
foam dry using absorbent, dry cloths (e.g. m icrofiber cloth) and
vacuum it after it has dried complete ly. _.,
