To change the engine oil (with or without oil fil-
ter cartridge replacement)
1. Park the vehicle on a level surface.
2. Remove the engine guard by removing the
bolts.
3. Remove the oil filler hole access panel by
pulling it outward.
4. Start the engine, warm it up for several min-
utes, and then turn it off.

5. Place an oil pan under the engine to collect
the used oil, and then remove the dipstick.
6. Remove the engine oil drain bolt to drain the
oil from the crankcase.
Skip steps 7–9 if the oil filter cartridge is not being
replaced.
7. Remove the oil filter cartridge with an oil filter
wrench. An oil filter wrench is available from a
Yamaha dealer. Make sure that the O-ring is
removed together with the oil filter cartridge.
If the O-ring remains attached to the crank-
case, oil leakage may occur.

8. Apply a light coat of clean engine oil to the O-
ring of the new oil filter cartridge. Make sure
the O-ring is seated properly.
9. Install the new oil filter cartridge with an oil fil-
ter wrench, and then tighten it to the specified
torque with a torque wrench.
10. Reinstall the engine oil drain bolt, and then
tighten it to the specified torque. Tightening torque:
Oil filter cartridge:
17 Nm (1.7 m·kgf, 12 ft·lbf)
Tightening torque:
Engine oil drain bolt:
30 Nm (3.0 m·kgf, 22 ft·lbf)

11. Refill with the specified amount of recom-
mended engine oil, and then insert the dip-
stick completely into the oil filler hole with the
arrow mark on the dipstick knob pointing up-
ward. NOTICE: Be sure to wipe off spilled
oil on any parts after the engine and ex-
haust system have cooled down.
Recommended engine oil:
See page 10-3.
Oil quantity:
Without oil filter cartridge replacement:
2.00 L (2.11 US qt, 1.76 Imp.qt)
With oil filter cartridge replacement:
2.10 L (2.22 US qt, 1.85 Imp.qt)

NOTICE
In order to prevent clutch slippage (since
the engine oil also lubricates the clutch),
do not mix any chemical additives with oil.
Do not use oils with a diesel specification
of “CD” or oils of a higher quality than
specified. In addition, do not use oils la-
beled “ENERGY CONSERVING II” or high-
er.
Make sure that no foreign material enters
the crankcase.
12. Start the engine, and then let it idle for sever-
al minutes while checking it for oil leakage. If
oil is leaking, immediately turn the engine off
and check for the cause.
13. Turn the engine off, wait at least ten minutes,
and then check the oil level and correct it if
necessary.
14. Install the engine guard by installing the bolts,
and then tightening them to the specified
torque.

Coolant
The coolant level should be checked before each
ride.
Checking the coolant level
1. Park the vehicle on a level surface.
2. Open the hood. (See pages 8-17–8-19 for
hood opening and closing procedures.)
3. Check the coolant level in the coolant reser-
voir when the engine is cold as the coolant
level varies with engine temperature. The
coolant should be between the minimum and
maximum level marks.
4. If the coolant is at or below the minimum level
mark, remove the reservoir cap, add coolant
to the maximum level mark, reinstall the res-
ervoir cap.
5. Close the hood.Coolant reservoir capacity
(up to the maximum level mark):

Inspection
The spark plug is an important engine component
and is easy to inspect. The condition of the spark
plug can indicate the condition of the engine.
The ideal color of the porcelain insulator around
the center electrode is a medium-to-light tan for a
vehicle that is being ridden normally.
You should periodically remove and inspect the
spark plug because heat and deposits will cause
the spark plug to slowly break down and erode. If
electrode erosion becomes excessive, or if carbon
and other deposits are excessive, you should re-
place the spark plug with the specified plug.
Specified spark plug:
