On-Command drive knob
The vehicle handles differently in each of the drive modes (“DIFF UNLOCK”, “2WD”, “4WD” and “DIFF
LOCK”). For example, the vehicle requires more effort to turn in “DIFF LOCK” than in “DIFF UNLOCK” or
“2WD”.
Always stop the vehicle before changing the position of the On-Command drive knob.
The meter display changes according to the selected drive mode. The different drive indicators, and the dif-
ferential gear lock indicator light “DIFF. LOCK” come on as follows:ACE-02E

TIP
To help the gears engage or disengage when a drive indicator (and indicator light) is flashing, make
sure that there are no obstacles or people around the vehicle, and then briefly operate the vehicle a
few times in reverse and forward until the indicator (and indicator light) for the selected drive mode
comes on. In addition to operating in reverse and forward, also turning the steering wheel back and
forth will help the front differential gear lock engage or disengage.
When the On-Command drive indicator “” or the On-Command drive indicator “” and the “DIFF.
LOCK” indicator light are flashing, the vehicle speed is limited. The vehicle speed returns to normal
when the differential gear engagement or disengagement is completed and the indicators and indica-
tor light stop flashing.

Parking
When parking, stop the engine and shift the drive
select lever into the neutral position. Apply the
parking brake to help prevent the vehicle from roll-
ing. See page 7-45 for more information on park-
ing and parking on a slope.TIPIf the parking brake lever is pulled up when the On-
Command drive knob is in the “DIFF UNLOCK”
position, the rear differential gear automatically
locks and the On-Command drive indicator “” is
displayed in the meter. When the parking brake is
released, the rear differential gear unlocks and the
On-Command drive indicator “” displays.

Loading
Take extra precautions when driving with a load or
trailer. Follow these instructions and always use
common sense and good judgment when carrying
cargo or towing a trailer.

7-33
Become familiar with the way the vehicle feels in
low and high ranges, first in two-wheel drive with
both differentials unlocked “DIFF UNLOCK” and
with the rear differential locked “2WD”, and then in
four-wheel drive “4WD” and four-wheel drive with
the differential locked “DIFF LOCK”. Steering may
take more effort in four-wheel drive with the differ-
ential locked “DIFF LOCK”. Also practice driving in
reverse.
Take the time to learn basic operation of the vehi-
cle before attempting more difficult maneuvers.
Getting ready to ride
Perform the Pre-Operation Checks on pages 5-1–
5-31. Follow the instructions starting on pages
6-7–6-9 to start the engine.

7-59
Rough terrain
Operation over rough terrain should be done with
caution.
Look for and avoid obstacles that could cause
damage to the vehicle or could lead to a roll-
over or accident.
Do not drive in a way that will get the Rhino air-
borne, as injury, loss of control, and damage to
the vehicle could occur.
Pavement
This vehicle is designed for off-road use only.
Avoid paved surfaces. Turn gradually and go slow-
ly if you must drive on pavement.
When driving slowly on smooth, flat surfaces, con-
sider using the “DIFF UNLOCK” drive mode. Hav-
ing both differentials unlocked will provide greater
slow-speed maneuverability under such condi-
tions than operation with locked differentials.

Front differential gear oil
Checking the front differential gear oil level
1. Park the vehicle on a level surface.
2. Loosen the front differential gear oil level
check bolt until oil flows out.
3. If no oil flows out, remove the front differential
gear oil filler bolt, and add the recommended
type of oil in the oil filler hole until it flows out
of the oil level check bolt hole. NOTICE: Be
sure no foreign material enters the front
differential gear case.
4. Tighten the oil level check bolt to the speci-
fied torque.
Tightening torque:
Front differential gear oil level check bolt:
10 Nm (1.0 m·kgf, 7.2 ft·lbf)

Changing the front differential gear oil
1. Park the vehicle on a level surface.
2. Place a container under the front differential
gear case to collect the used oil.
3. Remove the oil filler bolt and front differential
gear oil drain bolt to drain the oil.
4. Reinstall the drain bolt, and tighten it to the
specified torque. Tightening torque:
Front differential gear oil filler bolt:
