– Hold the button pressed and push the handbrake lever down fully
.
The handbrake warning light
lights up when the handbrak e is applied, provided the
ignition is on.
A warning signal sounds and the following text appears in the display* if you have inad-
vertently driven off with the handbrake applied:
Release parking brake!
The handbrake warning is acti vated if you drive at a speed of more than 6 km/h for
more than 3 seconds.
WARNING
Please note that the handbrake must be fully released. A handbrake which
is only partially released can result in the rear brakes overheating which will
have a negative effect on the operation of the brake system - risk of accident! In
addition this can result in premature wear of the rear brake pads.
Never leave children unattended in the vehicle. The children might, for
example, release the handbrake or take the vehicle out of gear. The vehicle
might then move off - risk of accident!Caution
After the car has come to a stop, always firs t of all apply the handbrake firmly before
then additionally engaging a gear (manual gearbox) or moving the selector lever into
position P (automatic gearbox).KESSY system*IntroductionThe KESSY system makes it possible to switch the ignition on/off and to start/stop the
engine without actively using the key.
Unlocking and locking the steeringIt is necessary that a valid key is in th e vehicle in order to unlock the steering.Unlocking the steering– Open the driver door and enter the vehicle.
– When closing the driver door, the steering is unlocked.Locking the steering– Bring the vehicle to a stop.
– Switch off the engine and/or the ignition by pressing the starter button fig. 129 .
– When opening the driver door, the steering is locked.
The steering is also locked after locking the vehicle.
If the steering is locked and the KESSY syst em does not manage to unlock the steering
lock the first time (e.g. if the wheels rest against the curb), the attempt will be repeated
twice by the system.
If then the steering lock is still not unlocke d, you will be asked by the system, by means
of a message in the information display* Move steering wheel! or in the display of the
instrument cluster Move steering, to move the steering wheel and 3 more attempts to
unlock will be made after 2 seconds, the warning light
flashes.
If the steering lock can still not be unlocke d afterwards, the message in the information
display* Steering wheel still locked. is displayed.

It is necessary to eliminate the possible ca use which prevents the unlocking and repeat
the attempt to unlock the steering.
Engine protection for electric steering lock
The electric steering lock has an engine protection which slows down the locking and
unlocking of the steering if the starter button is pressed repeatedly at short intervals.
Note
After pressing the starter button while th e steering is locked, the steering is
unlocked, the electrical components are acti vated (e.g. radio, navigation system etc.)
and the igntion is switched on.
If you do not exit or enter the vehicle again using the valid key after locking the
steering, however you wish to unlock the st eering, you must press the starter button.
At the same time, electrical components ar e activated (e.g. radio, navigation system
etc.) and the ignition is switched on.
If you switch off the ignition or the engine by pressing the starter button and if the
driver door is already opened, the steering wi ll not lock. In order to lock the steering, it
is necessary to close and open the driver door again or to lock the vehicle with the aid
of the sensor page 40, fig. 26 .
Switching on the ignitionIt is necessary that a valid key is in the vehicle and that the steering is unlocked in order
to switch on the ignition.
– The ignition is switched on by briefly pressing the starter button page 125,
fig. 129 .
Once you switch on the ignition an d open the driver door, the message Switch off
ignition! appears in the information display*.Switching off the ignition– The ignition is switched off by briefly pressing the starter button page 125,
fig. 129 .
The ignition can be switched off up to a speed of 2 km/h. On vehicles fitted with a manual gearbox,
the clutch must not be pressed after
switching off the ignition otherwise the system would try to start.
On vehicles fitted with an automatic gearbox, the selector lever must be in the position
P or N and the brake pedal must not be pressed.
Emergency ignition shutoff systemIn an emergency it is possible to switch off the ignition even at speeds greater than 2
km/h, by way of the so-called em ergency ignition shutoff system.
– Press the starter button page 125, fig. 129 for longer than 1 second or press it
twice within 1 second.
WARNING
Never switch off the ignition while dr iving, otherwise the steering and brake
assist do no longer function - risk of accident!Starting the engineIt is necessary that a valid key is in the vehi cle, the steering is unlocked and the ignition
is switched on in order to start the vehicle. On vehicles with manual gearbox, hold the
clutch pressed when starting the vehicle, on vehicles with automatic gearbox move the
selector lever into position P or N and hold the brake pedal pressed until the engine
starts.Petrol engines– Press the starter button page 125, fig. 129 until the engine has started.Diesel engines– If the starter button is pressed during the whole preglow period, the engine starts
after the warning light
has gone out.
The diesel engine can also be started by pressing the starter button, the ignition is
switched on and the preglow warning light
lights up. You must wait until the
preglow warning light
goes out and then press the starter button again until the
engine starts.

If in an emergency, the engine must be star
ted quickly (e.g. in a critical situation), you
can start the engine by pressing the starte r button again before the preglow warning
light goes out.
WARNING
Never leave the key in the vehicle in th e area where there are children, because
they can easily start the vehicle - risk of accident!
Note
If the steering is locked while the engine is started, it is unlocked by pressing the starter
button, the electrical components (e.g. radio, navigation system etc.) are activated, the
ignition is switched on and the engine is started.Emergency start-up of engineIf the authorised key is not successfully recognised, Key not found is shown in the
information display* or No Key is shown in the display of the instrument cluster and
the emergency start-up of the engine must be carried out.
– Press the starter button fig. 130 and then hold the key at the starter button or
– press the starter button directly with the key.
Note
During an emergency start-up of the engine, the correct orientation of the key must be
kept fig. 130 .
Switching the engine off– Bring the vehicle to a stop.
– Switch off the engine by pressing the starter button page 125, fig. 129 , doing so
switches off the ignition at the same time.
Note
The KESSY system is protected against inadvertently switching off the engine while
driving, this means that the engine can only be switched off in an emergency
page 126.Messages in the instrument clusterIf a fault is present in the electric steering lock, a message regarding this fault is shown
in the information display* or in the display of the instrument cluster.
Steering column lock: Workshop!
If this message is shown in the information display*, the warning light flashes
and
an acoustic signal sounds, you can continue the trip with extra care. The vehicle must
be immediately taken to a specialist garage.
Steering column lock defective.
If this message is shown in the information display*, the warning light
flashes and a
warning signal sounds, the vehicle must no t be driven and it must be taken to a
specialist garage. After switching off the ignition, it is then no longer possible to lock the
steering, to activate the electrical components (e.g. radio, navigation system), to switch
on the ignition again and to start the engine.
Depress clutch! or CLUTCH
This message is shown if you do not depress the clutch pedal when starting the engine.
Depress brake pedal! or BRAKE
This message is shown if you do not depress the brake pedal when starting the engine,
the warning light
comes on.

138WARNING
Never move the selector lever into position R or P when driving - risk of an
accident!
When the engine is running and the vehicle is stationary, it is necessary to
hold the car with the brake pedal in all the positions of the selector lever (except
P and N) since the power transmission is never completely interrupted, also not
when the engine is idling - the vehicle creeps.
You must on no account unintentionally operate the throttle (e.g. by hand
from the engine compartment) if a driv e position is engaged when the car is
stationary. The vehicle would otherwise immediately start off - also when the
handbrake is firmly applied - risk of an accident!
You must move the selector lever into position P and firmly apply the hand-
brake first before you or any other person opens the bonnet and starts working
on the engine when it is running - risk of accident! It is also essential to observe
all warnings page 216.
Selector lever lockAutomatic selector lever lock
With the ignition on, the selector lever is locked when it is in the positions P and N . You
must first of all depress the brake pedal in or der to move the selector lever out of this
position. The warning light
page 27 lights up in the instrument cluster as a
reminder for the driver when the selector lever is in the positions P and N.
A time delay element ensures that the selector lever is not blocked when rapidly
switching over the position N (e.g. from R to D). This does, for example, allow one to
seesaw out a stuck vehicle. The selector lever lo ck will click into place if the lever is in
the N position for more than 2 seconds without the brake pedal being pressed.
The selector lever lock is only active if the vehicle is stationary or moving at speed of
less than 5 km/hour. The lock is swit ched off automatically into position N when the
car is travelling at a higher speed.
Shiftlock button
The Shiftlock button in the hand le of selector lever prevents certain selector lever posi-
tions being engaged inadvertently. The select or lever lock is cancelled when you press
the Shiftlock button. Keylock - Ignition key withdrawal lock
You can only withdraw the ignition key after
switching off the ignition if the selector
lever is in position P. If the ignition key is withdrawn, the selector lever is blocked in
position P.
Kickdown function
The kickdown function provides you with maximum acceleration
power.Fully depressing the accelerato r pedal allows the kickdown function to be activated in
the desired driving program. This function has precedence over the driving
programme and serves for maximum accelerati on of the vehicle when exploiting the
maximum power potential of the engine wi thout taking into account the current
selector lever position ( D, S or Tiptronic). The gearbox shifts down to one or several
gears in line with the driving state and the vehicle accelerates. The gearbox does not
shift up into the highest gear until the en gine has reached its maximum revolutions for
this gear range.
WARNING
Please note that using the kickdown function can result in the driven wheels
spinning on a smooth or slippery road surface - risk of skidding!Dynamic shift programmeThe automatic gearbox of your vehicle is controlled electronically. Shifting up and
down through the gears is performed automati cally on the basis of pre-defined driving
programmes.
Adopting a moderate style of driving will cause the gearbox to select the most
economical driving programme. Shifting up into a higher gear as soon as possible and
shifting down as late as po ssible will have a favourable effect on your fuel consump-
tion.
Adopting a sporty style of driving with rapid movements of the accelerator pedal
combined with sharp acceleration and frequent changes in speed, exploiting the top
speed of the car or depressing the accele rator pedal (kickdown function), will cause

Connection with an already paired mobile phone
After switching on the ignition, the connect
ion is automatically established for the

Solving connection problems
If the system announces No paired phone found , check the operating state of the
telephone:
Is the telephone switched on?
Is the PIN code entered?
Is Bluetooth
® active?
Is the visibility of the mobile phone active?
Was the telephone already paired with the hands-free system?
WARNING
In the event of air transport, the Bluetooth
® function of the hands-free system
must be switched off by a specialist garage!
Note
Not valid for all mobile phones which enable a communication via Bluetooth
®.
You can ask at an authorised Škoda Service Partner if your telephone is compatible
with the universal telephone preinstallation GSM II.
If a suitable adapter is available for your mobile phone, use your mobile phone
exclusively in the adapter so that the radiation in the vehicle drops to a minimum.
Inserting the mobile phone into the adapter ensures an optimal sending and
receiving power and offers at the same ti me the advantage of the battery charging.
The range of the Bluetooth
® connection to the hands-free system is restricted to
the vehicle interior. The range is dependent on local factors, e.g. obstacles between the devices and mutual interferences with other de
vices. If your mobile phone is e.g. in a
jacket pocket, this can lead to diffic ulties when establishing the Bluetooth
® connection
with the hands-free system or the data transfer.
Inserting the mobile phone with the adapter*Only one telephone mount* is factory-fitted. An adapter for the telephone can be
purchased from the range of the Škoda original accessories.Inserting the mobile phone with the adapter– First of all push the adapter fig. 142 in the direction of arrow up to the stop
into the mount. Press the adapter slightly downwards, until it locks securely into
position.
– Insert the mobile phone into the adap ter (as specified in manufacturer's
instructions).Removing the mobile phone with the adapter– Press simultaneouly the side locks of the mount and remove the mobile phone and adapter fig. 142 .
Caution
Taking the mobile phone out of the adapter du ring the call can lead to interruption of
the connection. When taking out the mobi le phone, the connection to the factory-
fitted antenna is interrupted, this reduces the quality of the transmitting and receiving
signal. The charging of the mobile phone battery is also interrupted.

be carried out for the connection.
Connecting the telephone with the hands-free system via the HFP
profile– Activate the Bluetooth
® in your telephone and the vi sibility of the mobile phone.
– Switch on the ignition.
– Select the menu Phone - Phone search in the information display and wait until
the control unit has ended the search.
– Select your mobile phone in the menu of the units found.
– Within 30 seconds enter in your telephone the 16 digit PIN of your control unit,
which is indicated in the information display* and confirm it according to the
instructions on the display of your telephone.
– If your SIM card is blocked by a PIN code, enter the PIN of the SIM card of your tele- phone. The telephone connects to the control unit (during the first connection you
can only select in the information display* and when the vehicle is stationary, if the
PIN should be stored).
– To store a new user or to download the telephone book and the indentification data of the SIM card into the control unit, follow the instructions in the information
display* and on the mobile phone.
Connecting the telephone with the hands-free system via the rSAP
profile– Activate the Bluetooth
® in your telephone and the visi bility of the mobile phone.
For certain mobile phones it is necessary to switch on first the rSAP function.
– Switch on the ignition.
– Select the menu Phone - Phone search in the information display and wait until
the control unit has ended the search.
– Select your mobile phone in the menu of the units found.
– Within 30 seconds enter in your telephone the 16 digit PIN of your control unit,
which is indicated in the information display* and confirm it according to the
instructions on the display of your telephone. – If your SIM card is blocked by a PIN code, enter the PIN of the SIM card of your tele-
phone. The telephone connects to the cont rol unit (during the first connection you
can only select in the information display* and when the vehicle is stationary, if the
PIN should be stored).
– For the first storage of a new user follow the instructions in the information display.
– To download the telephone book and the in dentification data of the SIM card into
the new control unit, confirm again the command rSAP in your mobile phone.
After connecting the telephone with the hand s-free system via the rSAP profile, the
telephone deregisters from the GSM network and only the control unit ensures the
communication with the network. In the telephone only the interface for Bluetooth
®
remains active. In this case, yo u can only separate from the control unit, switch off the
Bluetooth
® connection or select the number of the emergency call 112 (only valid for
some countries).
The telephone connects preferentially via the rSAP profile.
If the PIN was stored, the telephone is automatically detected and connected with the
hands-free system when the ignition is switched on the next time. Check on your
mobile phone if it was automatically connected.
Disconnecting the connection
The connection to the hands-fr ee system is disconnected:
When removing the key from the ignition lock (during a telephone call, the connec-
tion is disconnected).
After disconnecting the connection in the telephone.
By disconnecting the connection in the information display*.
On vehicles which are fitted out with radio or na vigation at the factory, it is possible to
terminate the telephone call after removing th e key from the ignition lock by pressing
the icon on the touch-screen of the radio

vehicle and the occupants. The greater the speed and weight increase, the greater the
amount of energy which has to be absorbed in the event of an accident.
The speed of the vehicle is, nevertheless, the most important factor. Doubling the
speed of the vehicle from 25 km/h up to 50 km/hour increases the kinetic energy four
times.
The common opinion that it is possible to su pport your body in a minor accident with
your hands, is incorrect. Even in a collision at only a low speed, the forces acting on the
body are such that it is no longer possible to support your body.
Even if you only drive at a speed within the range from 30 km/hour to 50 km/hour, the
forces which are produced on your body in the event of an accident can easily exceed
10.000 N (Newton). This equals a weight of one tonne (1 000 kg).
In the event of a frontal collision, occupants of the vehicle not wearing a seat belt, are
thrown forward and strike in an uncontrolled way parts of the interior of the vehicle,
such as steering wheel, dash panel, windscreen, page 165, fig. 149 - left. The occu-
pants of a vehicle who have not fastened their seat belts may even be thrown out of
the vehicle. This can result in fatal injuries.
It is also important that rear seat occupants fasten their seat belts as they will otherwise
be thrown through the vehicle in an uncontr olled manner in the event of an accident

but also for those seated at the front page 165, fig. 149 - right.Important safety information regarding the use of seat beltsThe correct use of the seat belts cons iderably reduces the risk of injury!
WARNING
The belt webbing must not be jammed in-between at any point or twisted,
or chafe against any sharp edges.
It is important that the belt webbing is properly routed if the seat belts are
to offer their maximum protection page 167, “How are seat belts correctly
fastened?”.
No two persons (also not children) should ever use a single seat belt
together.
The maximum protection which seat belts can offer is only achieved if you
are correctly seated page 162, “Correct seated position”.
The belt webbing must not run across solid or fragile objects (e.g. specta-
cles, ball-point pens, keys etc.) as this may be a cause of injuries.
Bulky, loose clothing (e.g. a winter coat over a jacket) does not allow you to
be correctly seated and impairs proper operation of the seat belts.
It is prohibited to use clamps or other objects to adjust seat belts (e.g. for
shortening the belts for smaller persons).
The lock tongue should only be inserted into the lock which is the correct
one for your seat. Wrong use of the safety belt will reduce its capacity to protect
and the risk of injury increases.
The seat backrests of the front seats must not be tilted too far to the rear
otherwise the seatbelts can lose their effectiveness.
The belt webbing must always be ke pt clean. Soiled belt webbing may
impair proper operation of the inertia reel page 211, “Seat belts”.
The slot of the belt tongue must not be blocked by paper or similar objects
otherwise the belt tongue will not lock in place properly.
Inspect the seat belts regula rly to ensure they are in good condition. If you
find seat belts which have damage to the seat belt webbing, seat belt connec-
tions, to the inertia reels or to the lock, the relevant safety belt must be replaced
by a specialist garage.
The seat belts must not be removed or changed in any way. Do not make an
attempt to repair the seat belts yourself.
Damaged seat belts which have been subjected to stress in an accident and
were therefore stretched, must be replaced - this is best done by a specialist
garage. The anchorage points of the belts must also be inspected. The
anchorage points for the belts should also be checked.
In certain countries it is possible to use seat belts which differ in terms of
their operation from the seat belts which are described on the pages which

A grey white, non harmful gas is released when airbag is inflated. This is perfectly
normal and is not an indicati on of a fire in the vehicle.
The forward movement of the body is cushioned when it makes contact with the fully
inflated airbag and the risk of injury to the legs of the driver is thus reduced.Important safety information on the driver's knee airbag
WARNING
The surface of the airbag module in the lower part of the dash panel below
the steering column must not be stuck onto, covered or modified in any other
way. These parts should only be cleaned with a dry cloth or a cloth moistened
with water. No objects must be attached to the cover of the airbag module or be
located within the immediate area.
No modifications of any kind may be made to parts of the airbag system.
Any work on the airbag system includ ing installing and removing system
components because of other repair wo rk (e.g. removing the steering wheel)
must only be carried out by a specialist garage.
Never carry out changes on the front bumper or on the body.
Do not attach any bulky and heavy obje cts (keys etc.) to the keylock. These
can be ejected by the knee airbag being deployed and hurt you.
Side airbags*Description of side airbags
The side airbag together with the head airbag offers enhanced occu-
pant protection in the event of a side collision.The front side airbags are housed in the upholstery of the seat backrests of the front
seats fig. 157 .
The rear side airbags* are located between the entrance area and the seat backrest.
The side airbag system in combination with the three-point seat belts, offers additional
protection for the upper area of the body (chest, stomach and pelvis) of the occupants
of the car in the event of a sid e collision of major severity.
Apart from their normal protective function, a further task of the seat belts is to also
hold the occupents of the front or rear exteri or seats in a correct seated position in the
event of a side collision so as to enable th e side airbag to offer the maximum protec-
tion.
You should therefore always fasten the seat belts, not only because this is required by
law, but also for safety reasons and for your own protection.
Each time the side airbags are deployed, th e head airbag* and the front belt tensioner
on the side of the car on which the collision occures, are automatically deployed at the
same time in order to provide the occupant with enhanced protection.
