sible and wash thoroughly after any con-

l Keep used engine oils out of reach of chil-

Protect the environment
It
is illegal to pollute drains, water courses and soil.
Use authorized waste collection facilities, includ-
ing civic amenity sites and garages providing facili-
ties for disposal of used oil and used oil filters. If in
doubt, contact your local authority for advice on dis-

Check engine warning lamp
(diesel-powered vehicles)

This
lamp is a part of an onboard diag-
nostic system which monitors the emis-
sions control systems.
If a problem is detected in one of these
systems, this lamp illuminates.
Although your vehicle will usually be
drivable and not need towing, we recom-
mend you to have the system checked as
soon as possible.
This lamp will also illuminate for a few
seconds when the ignition key is turned
to the “ON” position. If it does not go
off after a few seconds, we recommend
you to have the vehicle checked. CAUTION
l
Prolonged
driving with this
lamp on may cause further dam-
age to the emission control sys-
tem. It could also affect fuel
economy and drivability.
l If the lamp does not illuminate
when the ignition key is turned
to the “ON” position, we recom-
mend you to have the system
checked. CAUTION
l
If
the lamp illuminates while
the engine is running, avoid
driving at high speeds and we
recommend you to have the sys-
tem checked.
During vehicle operation with
the lamp illuminated, the vehi-
cle may not accelerate when
you depress the accelerator ped-
al.
When the vehicle is stationary
with the lamp illuminated, you
must depress the brake pedal
more firmly than usual since
the engine idling speed is high-
er than usual.
NOTE l The

engine electronic control mod-
ule accommodating the onboard di-
agnostic system has various fault
data (especially about the exhaust
emission) stored.
This data will be erased if a bat-
tery cable is disconnected which
will make a rapid diagnosis diffi-
cult. Do not disconnect a battery
cable when the check engine warn-

it illuminates while the en-
gine is running, there is a prob-
lem in the charging system. In
this case, immediately park
your vehicle in a safe place and

checked. Oil pressure warning lamp

lamp illuminates when the ignition
key is turned to the “ON” position, and
goes off after the engine has started. If it
illuminates while the engine is running,
the oil pressure is too low.
If the warning lamp illuminates while
the engine is running, turn the engine off
and have it inspected. CAUTION
l
If
this lamp illuminates when
the engine oil level is not low,
have it inspected.
l This warning lamp does not in-
dicate the amount of oil in the
crankcase.
This must be determined by
checking the oil level on the dip-
stick, while the engine is switch-

CAUTION
l
If you continue driving with
low engine oil level or with this
warning lamp illuminated, en-
gine seizure may occur.
NOTE l The

oil pressure warning lamp
should not be treated as an indica-
tion of the engine’s oil level. The
oil level must be checked using

lamp illuminates when a door or
the tailgate is either open or incomplete-
ly closed.
If the vehicle speed reaches approximate-
ly 8 km/h (5 mph) with a door or the tail-
gate open or incompletely closed, the
warning lamp flashes 8 times and a buz-
zer simultaneously sounds 8 times as a
warning. CAUTION
l
Before
moving your vehicle,
check that the warning lamp is
OFF. NOTE
l On

vehicles with keyless entry sys-
tem, the lamp remains illuminated
for a certain period and then goes
out automatically. Refer to
“Lamps (room lamps, etc.) auto-
cutout function” on page 5-37.
l It is possible to change the buzzer
setting for either of the following
types of operation. For further in-
formation, we recommend you to
consult a MITSUBISHI
MOTORS Authorized Service
Point.
• No buzzer operation (buzzerdisabled)
• Continuous buzzer operation Multi centre display

l When
operating the system for a pro-
longed period, make sure the vehicle is
parked in a well ventilated area to avoid
the accumulation of toxic fumes inside
and outside of the passenger compartment. CAUTION
l
The
driver should not operate the display
while the vehicle is in motion.
l When operating the system, stop the vehi-
cle in a safe area.
When the ignition switch is in the “ACC” position,
the
digital clock is displayed in the multi centre dis-
play. When the ignition switch is in the “ON” posi-
tion, the momentary fuel consumption and outside
temperature are displayed besides digital clock. Instruments and controls

NOTE
l A
ticking noise may be heard after starting
the engine. This is not an abnormal condi-
tion. The noise will disappear after a short
time of engine running.
If the ticking noise continues after the engine
is warmed up, we recommend you to have
your vehicle checked. Diesel particulate filter (DPF)*

The
diesel particulate filter (DPF) is a device that
captures most of the particulate matter (PM) in the
exhaust emissions of the diesel engine. The DPF au-
tomatically burns away trapped PM during vehicle
operation. Under certain driving conditions, howev-
er, the DPF is not able to burn away all of the trap-
ped PM and, as a result, an excessive amount of
PM accumulates inside it. WARNING
l The DPF reaches very high temperatures.
Do

not park your vehicle in areas where
combustible materials such as dry grass
or leaves can come in contact with a hot
exhaust system since a fire could occur. CAUTION
l
Do
not use any type of fuel or engine oil
that is not specified for your vehicle. Al-
so, do not use any moisture-removing
agent or other fuel additive. Such substan-
ces could have a detrimental effect on the
DPF.
Refer to “Fuel selection” on page 02 and
“Engine oil” on page 8-06.
NOTE l To

minimize the likelihood of excessive ac-
cumulation of PM, try to avoid driving for
long periods at low speeds and repeatedly
driving short distances. DPF warning lamp
The DPF warning lamp comes on in the event of an
abnormality

in the DPF system. Provided the DPF
system is working normally, the DPF warning
lamp comes on when the ignition switch is turned
to the “ON” position and goes off a few seconds later. If the DPF warning lamp comes on dur-
ing vehicle operation
Steady

illumination of the DPF warning lamp
shows that the DPF has not been able to burn away
all of the trapped PM and that, as a result, an exces-
sive amount of PM has accumulated inside it. To en-
able the DPF to burn away the PM, try to drive the
vehicle as follows:
l With the gearshift lever in the 4 th
gear posi-
tion or 5 th
gear position, drive more than 15
minutes at a speed of at least 60 km/h
(37 mph) and an engine revolutions of at
least 2,000 rpm.
If the DPF warning lamp subsequently stays on, con-
tact your MITSUBISHI MOTORS Authorized Serv-

3. Confirm that the cooling fans are turning. If
the fans are not turning, stop the engine im-
mediately and have it checked.
Petrol-powered vehicles

WARNING
l Be
careful not to get your hands or
clothes caught in the cooling fans. 4. After
the engine coolant temperature has drop-
ped to the normal temperature, stop the engine. 5. Check the coolant level in the reserve tank.
Petrol-powered vehicles
The

reserve tank lid (C) is equipped with a
dipstick.

Remove the dipstick and wipe it with a clean
cloth. Reinsert the dipstick as far as it goes.
Remove the dipstick and read the coolant lev-
el, which should always be within the range
indicated.
FULL
LOW WARNING
l If
there is none, make sure that the en-
gine has cooled down before removing
the radiator cap (B), because hot steam
or boiling water otherwise will gush from
the filler port and may scald you.
Diesel-powered vehicles
The
coolant level in this tank should be kept
between the “LOW” and “FULL” marks.
FULL
LOW WARNING
l If
there is none, make sure that the en-
gine has cooled down before removing
the reserve tank cap (D), because hot
steam or boiling water otherwise will
gush from the filler port and may scald
you.
6. Add
coolant to the radiator and/or reserve tank if necessary. (Refer to the “Mainte-
nance” section.) For emergencies

under the cover, and move it around the cir-
cumference,
prying the cover away from the
wheel little by little as you move the bar
around.
NOTE l The wheel cover is made of plastic; take care
when prying it off. CAUTION
l
Use
the jack bar until the wheel cover
comes completely off. If you try to use
your hands, they may get hurt by the
edge of the wheel cover.
To install 1. Align
the wheel nuts with the wheel cover
mounting holes, and align the air valve (A)
of the tyre with the notch (B) in the wheel
cover. NOTE
l Full

wheel covers have a symbol mark (C)
provided on the reverse side to show the air
valve location.
Before installing the wheel cover to the
wheel, make sure that the opening with the
symbol mark is correctly aligned with the air
valve.
2. Press the bottom part (D) of the wheel cover onto the wheel.
3. Gently push both sides (E) of the wheel cov- er and hold them in place with both knees.
4. Gently tap around the circumference of the wheel cover at the top (F), then push the
wheel cover into place. NOTE
l Before

installing the wheel cover, make sure
the tabs on the back are correctly fitted on
the rings. If the tabs are not correctly fitted
on the rings, the wheel cover may come off.
If the tabs are broken, do not install the
wheel cover. Towing

If your vehicle needs to be towed
If

towing is necessary, we recommend you to have
it done by your MITSUBISHI MOTORS Author-
ized Service Point or a commercial tow truck service.

In the following cases, transport the vehicle using a
tow truck.
l The engine runs but the vehicle does not
move or abnormal noise is produced.
l Inspection of the vehicle’s underside reveals
that oil or some other fluid is leaking.
If a wheel gets stuck in a ditch, do not try to tow
the vehicle.
Please contact your MITSUBISHI MOTORS Au-
thorized Service Point or a commercial tow truck
service for assistance.

Only when you cannot receive a towing service
from a MITSUBISHI MOTORS Authorized Serv-
ice Point or commercial tow truck service, tow
your vehicle carefully in accordance with the in-
structions given in “Emergency towing” in this part. For emergencies
